speculation grows over who he'll pick as his running mate. cbs news's jarred hall -- or hill, rather, joins us now from new york. jarred, good morning. >> good morning. it's been two weeks and president biden has not been able to shake the criticism over the concern of his health after that rocky debate. he's got a lot to prove not only to american voters but to the world. as the nato summit kicks off the day, president joe biden is working to end speculation. >> is he being treated for parkinson's? no. >> reporter: after declining to say why dr. kevin cannard had visited the white house eight times in eight months, last night the president's personal physician sent a memo revealing cannard had only examined biden as part of his annual physical. he also sees military patients as the white house.

this comes as the president himself has grown more defiant against calls from within the party that he drop out of the 2024 race. >> we would be better off with another nominee. >> if any of these guys that don't think i should run, run against me. announce for president. challenge me at the convention. >> reporter: biden also picking up support from more progressive dems. >> the matter is closed, he is in this race, and i support him. >> reporter: in a series of recent calls with donors and lawmakers, the president maintained he's still the best candidate to beat donald trump this november. trump holds his first campaign in over a week later today with speculation growing over who he'll pick for his vice president. last night he told fox news he'll announce soon. >> i haven't made a final decision, but i have some ideas where we're going. >> reporter: this week's republican convention in milwaukee. and republicans are going into the convention with a new party platform, speaking of softer

language on same-sex marriage as well as abortion and reflecting on some of trump's policy leanings on relatively controversial issues for members of that party. >> jarred hill in morgue. thank you so much, jarred. >> thank you. well, beryl has weakened to a tropical depression, but not before leaving a trail of death and destruction along the gulf coast. the storm is being blamed for at least eight deaths, seven in texas and one in louisiana. power is starting to slowly come back on for some of the 3 million homes and businesses left in the dark. cbs's janet shamlian reports from houston. >> reporter: making landfall, beryl hammered the texas coast, unleashing punishing winds and torrential rain. there was widespread flooding and power outages for almost 3 million customers, the storm battering downtown houston, rain bands lashing the city skyscrapers. near this beach, this trailer home almost submerged. omar villafranca rode out the

storm on galveston island. >> reporter: after beryl made landfall, the storm brought high winds and possible tornados like the one that hit here, destroying this one home on stilts. >> reporter: elsewhere people abandoned their cars on flooded freeways. in harris county, two people were killed when trees fell on their homes. >> we're in a rescue mode. >> reporter: officials are begging people to stay home to avoid rescues like this after a man drove into high water and firefighters had to respond at the height of the storm. and now the cleanup. >> i heard a sound cracking and then a loud boom. >> reporter: joe gibbons showed us the 60-year-old tree that came down within feet of him. >> this is a massive tree. >> it is. >> what are you going to -- >> it withstood a lot of hurricanes, and if this was a category 1, i'd hate to think what it would have been like had

it stayed a 4 and made landfall. >> reporter: the climate challenge is making the storms wetter including flooding, precipitation, and storm surge. jan em shamlian, cbs news, phouston. well, as firefighters struggle to battle wildfires out west, the scorching temperatures have turned deadly. the heat is expected to have caused four deaths in portland, oregon, which broke record-high temperatures all weekend. and it was so hot in new york cty, the bridge stopped working. the heat apparently caused the steel to expand so it wouldn't close properly. firefighters were able to get it working again after cooling it down with water. cbs's carter evans has more on the heat and the fires across the country. >> reporter: an explosive wildfire continues to burn out of control in santa barbara county. it's already rannvaged 20,000 acres, and the flames are

threatening michael jac's neverland ranch coming within a mile of the pop star's estate. meanwhile people were found by deputies. in utah this fire doubled in size in less than 24 hours, making it difficult to fight as it barreled down on the tiny town of marysvale. >> it's scary. here we are at 10,000 acres. >> reporter: the extreme heat is breaking records. it was 120 degrees in las vegas on sunday. that's the hottest day ever recorded, and it's sending people to the emergency room. when it gets this hot, pavement and other surfaces get even hotter, and doctors say that can cause severe burns. >> 163 degrees. how long does it take for someone to get burned when the pavement's that hot? >> in just a few seconds you can get a second-degree burn. and in a few minutes, you can get a third-degree burn. so it doesn't take long. >> reporter: there's been an 84%

increase of heat-related deaths so far this year. in the valley, a motorcyclist died over the heat. it was over 129 degrees on sunday. >> it's definitely shocking. i don't know how anything can survive out here. >> reporter: about half the patients being treated at the burnie it in at university medical center are there because of burns, and tourists have to be really careful out here. it's about 113 degrees. lean against this post, it's about 141 degrees. carter evans, cbs news, las vegas. ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy is slated to fly to washington today to take part in the nato summit after this devastating attack in kyiv yesterday. ukraine says 31 people were killed after a major russian missile attacked on a children's hospital. disturbing footage shows people digging through mounds of rubble as thick black smoke billowed over a gutted building. it was the heaviest bombardment

over the capital in almost four months. and israeli's military goes deeper into hamas city. the idf says their troops targeted the city's infrastructure. they warned the offensive could tank the negotiations of the cease-fire after it appears they narrowed the gaps in recent days. cia director william burns returned there yesterday to continue talks. there are still obstacles. hamas said it agreed to relent on its key demand that israel commit to ending the war as part of any agreement, but it wants mediators to guarantee that negotiations continue with a permanent cease-fire. and for the first time we're hearing the harrowing ordeal from a former hostage, andrey koslov, who was rescued with others last month. he tells media he was constantly

on the morning newsstand. "politico" reports prosecutors said embattled new jersey senator bob menendez was a brabed man during federal prosecutors arguing the lawmaker put his power up for sale. menendez is accused of accepting bribes in exchange for helping egypt get military aid. the senator pleads not guilty. he faces up to 20 years in prison. "the new york times" says columbia university has removed three deans for allegedly engaging in texts that touched on anti-semitic tropes. the three deans have been identified as susan chang-kim, cristen kromm, and matthew patashnick. another dean, josef sorett, involved in another text exchange, will get to keep his job, promising to help with an inclusive environment. the campus will undergo anti-semitic training this fall.

here's a hook at today's forecast in some cities around the country. forecast in some cities around the country. at least six people have reportedly been hurt during this year's running of the bulls in pamplona, spain. five of those injured, including one american, are said to have minor cuts and bruises. the sixth was more seriously hurt. thousands of people show up for the annual festival to try to outrun bulls through the streets -- the town's, rather, narrow streets. jury selection gets underway today in alec baldwin's "rust" criminal trial. a new mexico judge delivered a blow to the prosecution yesterday, removing baldwin's role as producer is not relevant to the case.
