are we ready? is it safe? we'll talk with a local transportation. expert about this expansion. and the future of autonomous cars in just a few minutes, but 1st a look at your news. headlines. firefighters are monitoring for hot spots where a grass fire burned in the hills and south san jose broke out near santa teresa boulevard and bailey avenue. this afternoon. firefighters declared the fire under control. just about an hour ago. no 1 was hurt and no buildings were damaged. evacuations. have been ordered in santa barbara county, where the state's largest wildfire is burning right now. the so called lake fire is threatening several homes, including michael jackson's neverland ranch, at least 3 people have been injured. the fire burned about 40 square miles. so far, that's about twice the size of redwood city. it is just 12%. contained. san jose police arrested a man who is accused of planting an explosive near a business. the bomb squad responded last wednesday to ritter park drive. where they

found the device. police located the suspect 56 year old felix, arnaz, in his car, and he was booked into the senate clara county jail. homeless campers living along the creeks and the sit in the south bay could be fined or face jail time. the santa clara valley water district is considering the policy and is expected to vote as soon as this afternoon. if approved the ordinance would go into effect. next month. and it is another 1st alert. weather day as we get ready for a whole new stretch of heat, even though it may not look like it when you see san francisco chief funeral meteorologist paul hagen is in the virtual view studio to time out this next heat wave. it's coming, paul. >paul>it's going to be here by this time tomorrow. enjoy the pleasant temperatures that we have across the bay area right now because the heat done that shifted just barely. off to our east. is going to be edging back in our direction tomorrow. temperatures are going to reach their peak on thursday. it's still going to be hot on friday, just not as hot. and then the heat wave should come to a relatively quick end. we head into the weekend, the future is going to end. it is

this little area of low pressure a little. disturbance off the coast. is that moves up towards us? it's going to end the heat wave, but it's also going to deliver some of that smoke from the lake fire in santa barbara county towards the bay area, mostly elevated in the atmosphere. but something that we're going to keep an eye on nonetheless, looking outside, overseeing. it is fog, along with alcatraz. as we look out from salesforce tower temperatures are where they should be this time of year. 70s and 80s inland with 60s and low 7. around the bay, but again, these temperatures are going to be substantially hotter as we had through the afternoon tomorrow. temperatures tonight though, are going to be pretty pleasant. the fog is going to spread back across the bay into the inland valleys. it will retreat from those inland valleys pretty quickly on wednesday morning, but temperatures have beginning the 50s to around 60 degrees. wake up temperatures. wouldn't tell you the kind of warmup that were in for, but temperatures are going to be several degrees above average, even around the bay and a good dozen plus degrees above average farther inland, so 70s and 80s around the bay instead of 60s and 70s today, with instead of 70s and 80s inland, 90s and low, 100, let's do in for a closer look

and filling. in every part of the bay area 60s along the coast mid 60s, so a couple degrees warmer, but still comfortable, right along the coast. into the low 90s. down the peninsula with 90s to around 100 degrees in the santa clara valley all the way up to +101 more morgan hill. the real heat is going to be inland in the east bay. that's why you're not under a heat advisory. it's an excessive heat warning. temperatures are going to range from 99. in san ramon in dublin, 205. degrees around brentwood temperatures around the water. are going to warm up. just not as much around the bay 70s and 80s for san francisco and oakland. and for the north bay. temperatures ranging from the mid 90s to above 100 degrees as you go farther inland. should get over 100 degrees. around st helena and angwin with temperatures. getting up close to 100. degrees. as we look towards inland mendocino county around ukiah. so there is a heat advisory for most of the bay area, but it has been kicked up to an excessive heat warning for most of the east bay, which is a more dire category means the heat could cause problems for folks who even aren't ordinarily sensitive to warmer temperatures. but even despite

that escalation from a heat advisory to excessive heat, warning, it still doesn't look very likely that we're going to be sending any records tomorrow. we might be close in. and if you few locations, but we'll be well short of record territory in san francisco, oakland and redwood city even san jose staying close to 10 degrees below the daily record for the 10th of july. santa rosa within about 7 degrees of tomorrow's record, and livermore. despite the high temperature of 103 degrees. could be worse tomorrow's record. is 100. so that 1 looks like it should remain out of reach unless the heat really gets its act together. let's take a look at the 70 forecast and we'll start with inland parts of the bay air. where temperatures are going to peek over the next few days. and then they back off down to the low 90s on a widespread basis on saturday, kind of a mix of upper 80s and low 90s. and then back to the upper 80s, which is where we're supposed to be inland by sunday monday and tuesday. temperatures around the bay but they're also going to go up just not nearly as much temperatures into the 80s for a couple of days and then back down to the 70s on friday and then back down to the lower half of the 70s by the weekend and next week with the back and

forth fog pattern. returning. as well along and along the coast. while your temperatures don't warm up as much you are going to see more sunshine for the next couple of days and then less. sunshine, especially as the weekend rolls around sunday monday and tuesday are likely to be pretty great right along the coast, something to keep in mind if you're going to be heading out to stern grove sunday afternoon. liz >liz>paul, thanks so much. mos trying to give vince writers a driverless cars are the future and the company says it's safe to hop in. we dug into the data and as of december of last year, waymo reported a much lower rate of injuries. related to crashes. compared to human drivers. the company also cited a 57. reduction in crashes reported to police. yeah. still as our kevin koe. reports, not everyone is ready to ride. just yet. >wow. >>that's that's something. >this is paul. fuentes, his 1st time seeing a waymo. robot taxi up close. it's a nice looking vehicle. it even has room for luggage

lane, avoiding incoming traffic. before the waymo car eventually got the idea. and pulled over to the curb. we're going to have real congestion problems and at times we're going to have more serious problems we've already seen accidents and collisions. state senator dave cortese e sees the potential in the technology. but thanks it needs more regulations. it's a little bit of a wild wild west. situation. i don't think the individual passengers need to be fearful for their lives or anything like that. you're probably experiencing 2 comfortable drive yourself right now. we're not fearmongering here. over really saying is there's some practical things that need to be in place. um, and they should be in place. >is pushing for a bill to put regulatory power for automated vehicles in the hands of local governments. to keep improving they keep changing and actually very rapidly. maybe even more rapidly than the pace at which we legislate. uh, the local

lot about their approach to being kind of slow and steady as we all know they've been at this kind of the longest of any any company. out there. 15 plus years they've been through all 8 permits that our state offers, and i think they've really shown that they can they can weather storm ramos had just as many challenges as some of the other companies. >liz>but >>they really been deliberate about making sure that they demonstrate their technology is safe. and sustainable. i would argue >liz>it's really their game to lose right now. one would argue. is there anybody that's going to be close to any kind of competitive? for >tfxw mic>them? well, i think i think we can't cannot cruz and cruz has great technology. still very well capital. from an investment capital. standpoint. and we are we know that they're already beginning to relaunch and other locations. and you know, zook's really excites me. zook's 1 of our another 1 of our homegrown grown >liz>technology >>companies. they have a really unique vehicle. it's like a

little bean pods, so i think there will be other companies out there that are really competitive. but we know has this this kind of this. ride share market. really cornered here in san francisco, it is a big opportunity. for them to scale. >liz>of this waymo. uber tax. that some >tfxw mic>time >>cisco politicians want to get past. some argue, though, that if there's a tax max is going to stifle innovation with these companies. do you think that could happen? >tfxw mic>i don't know that it will stifle innovation. i think what it does, is, it puts more choice in the hands of the consumer. to actually decide. if this mode of transportation is best for them and, you know, i think the mystery here just to dispel any myths as we already have a tax whenever we take a a ride share. or an avian, san francisco and that tax goes to san francisco. county. transportation agency. 1.5%. of every ride and it generates a lot of revenue for that agency. and maybe we knew do need to think about other adding another other revenue sources. particularly as more

people. don't drive downtown in park. >liz>i'm curious what you think about public perception. because more and more. we're seeing these cars on the road. more and more people are taking them. we know that tourists are >tfxw mic>coming. >>very stanford. francisco. experience to hop in 1 of these autonomous cars yet every time there is a misfire on any of these cars, i mean in the most recent was recent incident. was in arizona. where the waymo was driving on the wrong side of the road. of course, we were reporting on it. so what do you know? some folks are really gung hosting. this is the future but others. i don't know. >tfxw mic>well, i think you know anytime we see in evolution and an innovation and technology. there's always your earlier. adopters and then there's as a bell curve in terms of adoption. and we're really x. time. we've proven that technology particularly for high injury. collisions. is like 6 times. better. than a human driven driver, but it worked terrible drivers >liz>and >>and i think getting in the vehicle for many people is the

1st step. but also kind of, um taking that step. 2. really branch. out and explore. rideshare. even is a big step for people. so i think there are many people that the 1st step is just going to be going to a public event and seeing them in the road and exploring like, hey, when i'm a pedestrian or a cyclist this actually is slowing down traffic around me, and we're seeing many people that we've interviewed as part of my researcher saying, like, hey, i want automated. vehicles on mice. street. because they make all the human drivers drive more safely. so i think we're going to see a rap. change in that perception as we see more and more robotic. drivers or automated drivers on the road. >liz>so as the technology gets better as these cars get better as a public perception gets better. where do you see this in 5 years? i mean, >tfxw mic>is it majority >liz>of the cars on the road? do you think in san >tfxw mic>francisco? in san francisco? no. mean mean in san francisco? we have 1 million million trips in san francis.

every day and you know, even if we were to put a number on the amount of automated vehicles that are out there right now it's 3 to 5% of the whole. volume. so will we get to 25? of that and where will those come from? the companies that we should be scared or uber and lyft? because we're seeing that like a lot of the people that choose automation and automated vehicles? you know there other choice would have been uber and lyft and so the big opportunity, i think is for when we see our transit agencies is really to think about. how can we think about integrating these services? and maybe bringing more people to long haul public? transit and thinking how these systems work together? and so i actually see maybe we see opportunities for sfm to for valley transit authority. for you know, 80 transit in oakland. to really reinvent their own service, and that's my hope, and i think we will see that in the next 5 years. >liz>interesting to see if the pressure of these autonomous vehicles that's going to put on
