more than a million customers remain in the dark days after hurricane beryl took out the power. now questions about the energy company's preparedness. and too close for comfort. two passenger planes are caught on camera appearing to be on a collision course. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we begin with democrats on capitol hill still divided over whether president biden should remain in the race for the white house. biden is hosting the nato summit in washington this week. in a blow to the president, democratic senator michael bennett said he feared donald trump can win the election by a landslide. meanwhile, trump held a rally in florida where he mentioned the name of a possible running mate ahead of the republican convention next week. cbs' jarred hill joins us from new york. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president biden is trying to play this on a number of fields here, meeting with union leaders this morning, speaking to

democratic mayors last night after welcoming nato yesterday all as he tries to reassure concerned democrats that he can perform amid growing uncertainty. >> distinguished guests, welcome. welcome to the 2024 nato summit. >> reporter: president joe biden in full voice kicked off the nato summit tuesday night in washington. the annual meeting is expected to have a big focus on ukraine. >> make no mistake, ukraine can and will stop putin. >> reporter: biden's forceful tone comes as his white house campaign and allies on capitol hill -- >> riding with biden. >> reporter: -- pushed back against concerns from within the party that he's not strong enough to win another term. the latest -- colorado senator michael bennett, new jersey congresswoman mikie sherill tuesday urged biden to lead through a process toward another nominee. >> advocating as strongly as possible that we have someone that can really take that case strongly and energetically to -- >> i think he is energetically

and effectively addressing those concerns. >> reporter: in florida, former president donald trump back on the campaign trail for the first time in over a week, poked at biden's struggles. >> a very bad guy. don't feel sorry for him. >> reporter: trump teasing a possible running mate ahead of next week's convention. >> they probably think i'm going to announce that marco's going to be vice president. because that's a lot of press. >> reporter: all as his former vp slammed the republican party's newly approved platform which makes no comment on a national abortion ban. mike pence calling a change, quote, a profound disappointment to the millions of pro-life republicans. we are also seeing two of those possible republican running mates, senators marco rubio as well as j.d. vance, sharpening their attacks against vice president kamala harris. meanwhile, a big test for biden could be coming tomorrow during his first solo press conference in a while. >> many eyes will be watching.

jarred hill in new york. thank you. >> reporter: thanks. at the nato summit president biden announced new commitments to help ukraine boost its air defenses against russia. later ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy urged u.s. lawmakers not to wait for the outcome of the november presidential election to provide meaningful support. >> it's time to sit down, to step out of the shadows, to make strong decisions to act and not to wait for november or any other month to this end. we must be strong and uncompromising all together. >> zelenskyy also pleaded for more weapons and fewer restrictions on using them against russia. and back home dangerous heat and record high temperatures continue for much of the west. highs today could break records from 105 in spokane, washington, to 118 in las vegas. the remnants of hurricane beryl flooded lansing, michigan, yesterday. up to three inches of rain fell

in some areas while more than a million customers in texas are still without power in the storm's aftermath. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: after hurricane beryl dumped flooding rains, southeast texas is now sweltering. in the houston area nearly 12,000 workers are rushing to restore power to 1.6 million customers as temperatures soared into the 90s. >> we are urging them to work as quickly as they can to restore the power in the safest but in the quickest way they can. >> reporter: harris county has opened cooling centers to help, giving residents a space to stay cool and charge their devices. in channelview, east of houston, yvette carrasco and her family have been without power since monday morning, staying outside because it was too hot inside. while we were talking, this happened -- >> about to not be okay. >> reporter: you're not? you okay? okay. let's -- >> can i get a chair?

>> reporter: can we get a chair? after we found shade and a chair we continued. do you ever wonder that if -- you'll survive the hurricane, but you won't survive the aftermath. >> i don't know. i mean -- we've had so far, but it gets tiring. you know, gets tiring of doing this over and over. >> reporter: one thing frustrating residents is they can't check centerpoint's outage map to see if their power has been restored because that map was knocked off line in may by a different storm. houston's mayor says he plans to hold centerpoint accountable if nay cannot restore power to one million customers as promised. omar villafranca, cbs news, houston, texas. a scary scene over the skies of syracuse, new york. watch as two planes appear to come dangerously close. the incident was caught on police dash cam video on monday. the delta connection flight carrying 80 passengers was taking off while the american airlines flight with 79 people on board was about to land.

to the eye it appeared as if they were about to collide. luckily they did. -- luckily they did not. the faa has not classified the incident as a close call so far but is investigating. opening statements are expected to get under way today in alec baldwin's involuntary trial. -- manslaughter trial. jurors and alternates were selected. they will be tasked with deciding whether alec baldwin committed a felony when halyna hutchins was shot and killed on the set of "rust" in 2021. the jurors will hear testimony from crew members who were eyewitnesses to the shooting including director joel souza who was injured. if convicted, baldwin faces up to 18 months in jail. coming up, how u.s. marshals assigned to supreme court justice sonya sotomayor foiled a crime outside of her home. and a first glimpse at the new residence of the san diego zoo. this is "cbs news mornings." yun chuan and xin bao. news mor" . this is steve's stomach, where voquezna can kick some acid,

meet yun chuan and xin bao, the san diego zoo has released the first official photos of these adorable giant pandas. officials say that the duo are acclimating well to their new habitat at the san diego zoo. they arrived from china in june. it will be several weeks, though, before the public can see them. and the search for a missing american woman continues. shots fired outside a home of a supreme court justice. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports security detail for supreme court justice sonya sotomayor shot and wounded a suspected carjacker. court documents reveal the incident unfolded friday as two deputy u.s. marshals were stationed near sotomayor's home. they were allegedly confronted by 18-year-old kentrell flowers, pointed a gun at them through the window. a deputy shot flowers. sotomayor was not directly mentioned in the documents, and there is no indication that she was the target of the attack.

the bbc reports the russian court has ordered the arrest of yulia navalnaya according to russian state media. a court in moscow has issued an arrest warrant for the widow of russian opposition leader alexei navalny on charges of extremism. he died in a russian cell in february, and now the moscow court ruled navalnaya, who has vowed to continue the work of her husband, should be taken into custody. navalnaya, who lives outside russia, responded to the arrest warrant saying vladimir putin is a murderer and a war criminal. and "usa today" says the search continues for a chicago woman who vanished in the bahamas exactly three weeks ago today. taylor casey was last spotted on a yoga retreat on paradise island. police recently announced search crews including k-9 units tracked a scent to waters where they found casey's cellphone and journal. investigators reported they have not been able to access the contents, though. next in cbs "moneywatch," the starbucks giveaway the chain

the dow closed down 52 points. the nasdaq gained 25, and the s&p 500 inched up four points. the mixed stock market numbers come after federal reserve chair jerome powell's first day of congressional hearings which did little to change the market's expectations for interest rate cuts. he told congress inflation has gotten better in the past two years, but central bank officials still want to see more progress before cutting rates. powell will return to congress today for another day of hearings. tesla appears to be losing its electrifying financial grip on the electric car market. a new report estimates tesla's share of the market in the u.s. dipped below half in the quarter for the first time as more competition cuts into the sector it once dominated. the news comes as ford, gm, hyundai, and kia all had record sales in their second quarters. and sip on this, starbucks lovers. today only customers who order any cold hand-crafted drink will

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ soccer star lionel messi tipped in a goal last night helping defending champion argentina beat canada in the semifinal of the copa america tournament. it's messi's 109th international goal. only cristiano ronaldo has more with 130. argentina will now play in the final on sunday chasing their second straight title. two very different americans often live side by side in the u.s. the top 1% now owns nearly as much wealth as the bottom 90%. as mark strassmann shows us, wyoming is home to one of the country's wealthiest communities and also one of the most unequal.

john's commute over this pass from his home in driggs, idaho. it's an hour drive or more to downtown jackson with its old-west charm and sticker shock. that's where we met jessica sell chambers. >> a lot of these stores your average working person, this is not for us. >> reporter: she's a jackson town council member and mayoral candidate. sell chambers told us this downtown project is typical -- luxury short-term rentals. what would you like it to be? >> i would love it to be a multifamily affordable housing. >> reporter: but that would have been costly and was never an option. >> this is beyond gentrification, this is super gentrification. >> reporter: you can make $200,000, $300,000 a year and not afford to live here. >> correct. it's unsustainable, too. it who's going to run the place? who's going to work and be the backbone of all the services? >> reporter: even for people with all the money in the world there's a moment of reckoning coming. >> yes. >> reporter: that moment flashed

briefly last month. the mountain pass collapsed, 80 feet of it gone. a landslide impassable for three weeks, further separating the two worlds. >> you're on the tv -- >> reporter: feeling it in driggs, idaho, pete and sarah wilson and their daughter harper. sarah's a media creative director. pete's a firefighter/paramedic in jackson, their hometown. you feel excluded from the place you grew up? >> 100%. >> yeah. >> i'm the help even though like i'm a firefighter/paramedic. once we're done doing the job we're expected to kick rocks and get lost. >> if you're looking at the american dream or whatever, if you work hard enough you can have what you want, but you can't. >> reporter: it's not just gone forever, it's gone forever. >> gone forever. >> reporter: sell chambers' jackson home has exploded in value, but the property taxes may drive her family out. >> we don't want to go anywhere. it's -- the money is not important to us, it's the community.
