the northeast while more than a million customers in texas are still waiting for their electricity to return in the summer heat. and alec baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial. the dramatic opening statements, and the key phrase that could be crucial to the actor's fate. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it is a pivotal day for president biden who is scheduled to hold a news conference and take questions from reporters later today. now the presser will happen not far there where biden is hosting nato leaders this week as he tries to staunch doubts about his ability to beat donald trump in the november election. yesterday peter welch of vermont became the first democratic senator to publicly call for biden to drop out. cbs' jarred hill joins us from new york with more on all of this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. president biden does not hold many of these lengthier solo news conferences.

is in fact, this will be the first since last november. it comes as biden's every word is being closely watched by voters, donors, and fellow democrats in washington who are still questioning if he can win in november. >> may we continue to grow stronger and closer in all the years ahead. >> reporter: president joe biden and nato leaders toasted a unified alliance as the president's support among members of his own party stands on shakier ground. wednesday vermont democrat peter welch became the first sitting senator to call on biden to pull out of the presidential race. the same day, democratic party mega donor george clooney dealt biden another blow calling on the president to step aside in a "new york times" op-ed. the actor destroyed his interactions with the president at a fundraiser he hosted for biden three weeks ago writing, "he wasn't even the joe biden of 2020. he was the same man we all witnessed at the debate." >> biden can ignore the polls, he can't ignore fundraising. that's why george clooney's statement matters. >> the decision is --

>> reporter: former house speaker nancy pelosi said in an interview yesterday it's up to the president to decide if he's going to stay in the race, but mr. biden's announced he has no plans to drop out. >> anybody saying he should resign is a big mistake. is a big mistake. we have a wonderful president right now. >> everybody knows at some point you got to take your grandparents' keys. like probably around the age joe biden is. >> reporter: biden's republican rival, former president donald trump, slammed pelosi and clooney on social media yesterday, while also poking at the democrats' infighting. both president biden and former president trump are hitting the road in the next couple of days, going to battleground states before the republican convention kicks off next week. >> all right, jarred hill in new york. thank you. nato members in the washington summit -- at the washington summit expressed their concerns over china's deepening alliance with russia. the european and north american allies called china a decisive

enabler of russia's war against ukraine urging the country to cease all material and political support to russia's war effort. it is the first time the group of 32 members has joined the u.s. in denouncing china's role in supplying russia with military aid. >> china provides dual-use equipment, microelectronics, a lot of other tools which are enabling russia to build missiles, to build the bombs, to build the aircraft, to build the weapons they're using to attack ukraine. >> china called nato's statement full of belligerent rhetoric. and now to the war in gaza where the u.s. is cautiously optimistic about cease-fire talks between israel and hamas. that word comes as israel's military yesterday ordered all palestinians to leave gaza city and head south. israel says it's targeting hamas militants who have regrouped there. israeli strikes elsewhere have killed dozens of people in

recent days. meanwhile, israel and hamas are engaged in talks over a possible deal that would halt the war and release israeli hostages. now to the severe weather here at home. the remnants of hurricane beryl flooded vermont. up to six inches of rain fell. some communities issued evacuation orders. this as residents in texas face a blistering heat wave as more than a million remain without power now for a fourth day. omar villafranca reports. >> reporter: in the lone star state, hundreds of cars lined up for several blocks to pick up needed supplies. the heat index hit 100 degrees in houston where residents are rushing to distribution centers for food, water, and ice. >> we have no food, nothing, zero. >> reporter: the punishing heat is overwhelming a region still recovering from hurricane beryl. more than a million customers in and around houston are still wow -- still without

electricity for a third day. is the criticism you guys are receiving, is it fair in your mind? >> in my mind it's not. we take tremendous amount of pride in preparing for events such as this, and you know, i think we've done really great work. >> reporter: centerpoint energy rolled out a new map to check the progress of restoration after customers were using a whataburger fast food app to track it near them. cities from coast to coast on feeling the burn. in portland, oregon, julio lopez with meals on wheels is delivering fans to people with no ac. >> hi, just want to make sure that you drink plenty of water. if you're feeling really, really tired or sleepy, you might be dehydrated. >> reporter: at least six suspected heat-related deaths have been reported there as temperatures skyrocketed into the triple digits over the weekend. back in houston, some texans escaped the severe heat and humidity at local cooling centers. did you try to rough it out? >> we did try to rough it out. we did. it just got too hot.

>> reporter: cooling centers like this stay busy during the day, but they close at night, and people have to go elsewhere. centerpoint energy says they reached their goal of restoring power to more than one million customers, but full restoration to more than a million other customers, that could take weeks. omar villafranca, cbs news, houston, texas. and an american airlines flight was forced to abort takeoff after one of its tires blew out. it happened yesterday at tampa international airport. video shows the tire fraying and smoking on the tarmac just moments after the plane was cleared for takeoff, prompting emergency crews to rush toward the scene. in a statement, american said the flight experienced a mechanical issue. the airline said none of the 180 people on board were hurt, and the passengers were put on a replacement flight to phoenix. the faa is now investigating the incident. coming up, alec baldwin is on trial in a new mexico courtroom. and the amazing rescue of

two nasa astronauts from boeing's "starliner" will be stuck at the international space station for a few more weeks. suni williams and butch wilmore docked on june 6th. the test mission was to last a week, but the undocking was delayed several times due to technical issues. the astronauts say they're not worried. >> i have a real good feeling in my heart that this spacecraft will bring us home no problem. >> nasa said it was still performing tests. the earliest departure for the astronauts is at the end of this month. adventurers in western virginia rescue a dog found some 50 feet down in a cave, and a new york lawmaker tries to shake up the supreme court. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the new york times" is reporting new york congresswoman alexandria ocasio-cortez has

filed impeachment articles against supreme court justices samuel alito and clarence thomas. ocasio-cortez is accusing the conservative justices of uncheced corruption. she raised arguments about undisclosed gifts thomas has received from wealthy conservatives in recent controversies involving alito's home including a flag insinuating joe biden did not win the 2020 election. the articles of impeachment are unlikely to gain traction, though, in the u.s. house which is controlled by republicans. espn says jontay porter has pleaded guilty in a case tied to a massive nba betting scandal. in april the nba banned porter for life after finding he intentionally withdrew from games early and gave betters confidential information about his health while playing for the raptors. the insider information allowed the betters to win tens of thousands of dollars. federal authorities later charged porter and four other

man i met was on his way to kill everyone in that house. he might as well have been walking up to get the mail for all it bothered him. >> if you are waiting for kevin costner's followup to "horizon," you'll have to wait a little longer. the release of film "horizon: an american saga chapter 2" has been pulled. this after the first film which debuted in june fizzled in theaters. newline cinema announced yesterday the western sequel will not hit theaters next month as scheduled. it's unclear when the movie will make its debut. your costco membership is about to go up, and dozens of big lots stores are closing. carissa lawson has today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: a winning day on wall street wednesday with all three major indices piling on gains. the dow soared 429 points. the nasdaq jumped 218, and the s&p 500 gained 56. costco members will start paying more to get those wholesale discounts.

the warehouse club announced wednesday that its regular membership fee is going up by 5 from $60 to $65 a year. you'll have to pay $10 more a year for the executive membership. costco said the increase starting september will affect about 52 million memberships. it's the first increase since 2017. bmw is recalling more than 390,000 vehicles in the u.s. because of defective airbags that may explode upon deployment. the recall covers certain bmw 3 series sedans and sport wagon models that were manufactured between 2006 and 2012. the vehicles may have a steering wheel with a takada airbag inflator installed by owners after purchase even though it was not officially approved by bmw as a replacement part. bmw has not received any reports of accidents or injuries related to this issue. and a big loss for big lots shoppers. the discount retailer plans to close between 35 and 40 stores this year as it struggles to stay alive.

the company has been losing money every year since 2022. big lots has not yet said which stores they'll be closing. that's your cbs "moneywatch" report for this thursday morning. i'm carissa lawson, cbs news, new york. just two weeks out from the paris olympics, the usa men's basketball team is making some changes to its roster. los angeles clippers star kawhi leonard is withdrawing from team usa. usa men's basketball said in a statement that they believe it would be best for the two-time nba champion to focus on preparing for the upcoming season instead of the paris olympic games. this year's nba champion derrick white will replace leonard on the roster. nascar driver bubba wallace has been fined for a retaliatory action. in car 23, he's seen slamming into winner alex bowman's chevrolet during the cooldown lap sunday. he was apparently retaliating against bowman for spinning out his vehicle during the race which he apologized for.

a wild scene in pennsylvania as a huge texas longhorn bull ran loose for more than an hour along interstate 83 in new york county yesterday. according to police, it got loose from its trailer while being transported. the bull was eventually captured. alec baldwin's involuntary manslaughter trial resumes today in new mexico. the actor was in court for opening statements yesterday. baldwin has maintained he never pulled the trigger on the gun that killed cinematographer halyna hutchins. his lawyer said that even if he did, it would not make him criminally negligent. elise preston has more. pointed the gun at another human being -- >> reporter: high drama as prosecutors laid out their case against actor alec baldwin. >> the evidence will show that someone who played make-believe with a real gun and violated the cardinal rules of firearm safety
