you know, president biden's every word was being closely watched yesterday as he continues to try and make the case that he should stay in this race. it was reassurance for some, but still more democrats are pulling away. >> i'm determined i'm running. >> reporter: in a rare solo news conference, an energetic president joe biden defied calls to drop out of the 2024 race. >> i've got to finish this job because there's so much at stake. >> reporter: the president faced tough questions for an hour as he tried to tamp down concerns over his age and fitness for office. >> i've taken three significant and intense neurological exams. can you name me somebody who's gotten more major piece of legislation in 3.5 years? >> reporter: last night more house democrats publicly called on the public to step aside. among them, connecticut's jim himes on cnn. >> in the next 96 hours perhaps is the moment to set aside the poetry, the loyalty, and the

[ applause ] >> president putin? he's going to beat president putin. president zelenskyy. >> reporter: later while referring to his running mate, vice president kamala harris. >> i wouldn't have picked vice president trump to be vice president to -- i think she's not qualified to be president. >> reporter: former president donald trump mocked the gaffe on social media writing, "biden, quote, has trump derangement syndrome." president biden is in battleground michigan today as his campaign braces for the possibility that over the next couple of days more democrats, potentially dozens according to cbs news reporting, may still come out against him, asking him

to step aside. >> all right. jarred hill in new york. thank you. former president trump has asked a state court judge to toss out his criminal conviction in new york. he and his attorneys want his hush-money conviction overturned and the case dismissed. they argued his historic trial was tainted by evidence that should not have been allowed because of the supreme court's recent presidential immunity ruling. now the judge said that he'll rule on the defense's request on september 6th and will sentence trump on september 18th if it is still required. meantime, trump met with viktor orban at mar-a-lago last neat just weeks after the hungarian prime minister met vladimir putin. orban has publicly endorsed trump's re-election bid. now to the weather, and a dangerous heat wave smothering the west. highs today could break records from 116 in phoenix to 109 in sacramento and 102 in denver. more record highs are possible saturday. it will be a hot weekend for those in the houston area where

many are still without electricity after hurricane beryl. janet shamlian reports. thank you. >> reporter: this is the excruciating wait for water and a few basic food items in searing 90-degree heat. how are you faring? >> it's been hard. it's been hard. like yesterday -- all of our food ruined, the day before yesterday. we haven't eaten since the day before yesterday. >> reporter: more than a million people in the houston area are without power for a fourth day. at one of more than a dozen cooling centers across the city, tempers are running hot. >> everyone knew days ahead that we were getting a hurricane, right? i would expect them to be more prepared and quicker to resolve issues. >> reporter: in the west, a relentless heat wave. it's the sixth consecutive day temperatures in las vegas have hit 115 degrees. >> we're going to walk up and down the street, but it's way too hot to do that. >> reporter: there have been about 90 suspected heat-related deaths in the west since the start of july. back in houston, a sports arena

has been outfitted with cots, a temporary shelter for people discharged from the hospital. but with no power at home. and this is the building where those patients are being housed. centerpoint says it expects to restore power to another 400,000 people friday, but that will still leave hundreds in the dark through sunday, almost a week after the storm. janet shamlian, cbs news, houston. in california firefighters are having a tough time containing an out-of-control wildfire. this was a scene yesterday near san bernardino national forest in southern california. footage shows a helicopter, one of three dispatched, dropping water on the vista fire. crews are racing to extinguish the flames, but they're facing complex terrain, hot weather, and gusty winds. the flames broke out sunday and have grown to more than 2,700 acres with hundreds of people evacuated. and now to the war in gaza with the israeli military now

admitting to mistakes on october 7th. a new report finds that the israeli military's response to the attack on a hard-hit community was slow and disorganized. the spokesperson said the army failed in its mission to protect the residents where more than 100 people were killed and more than 30 others were taken hostage. meantime, palestinians are returning to the ruins of gaza city after israel withdrew its troops there following a two-week offensive. so far civil workers say they have found 60 bodies in the rubble. coming up, the last american detained for bringing ammo to the turks and caicos is now home. and molotov cocktails fly through the streets of albania's capital. this is "cbs news mornings." targeted albania's government buildings and the mayor's office with molotov cocktails thursday accusing state officials of corruption. the violence broke out after the leader of the opposition party was placed under house arrest. he has denied any wrongdoing, accusing the current prime minister of a political vendetta. no injuries have been reported. a deadly viral challenge sparks a new lawsuit, and an american grandmother is home after a months' long ordeal in the caribbean. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." cbs miami reports a florida woman has returned home after being detained in turks and caicos for having ammo in her luggage. sharitta grier arrived in orlando yesterday nearly two months after being arrested on the caribbean island. she avoided jail time in her sentencing yesterday. >> did you have moments where you felt like you were not going to be able to get back home? >> yeah. i had ups and downs. some days i'd be okay.

the next day i'm down. you know, it's an emotional roller coaster. >> grier was fined $1,500 and given a 23-week suspended sentence. she was the fifth american to be charged in turks and caicos under its gun laws in recent months and had faced a mandatory 12-year prison sentence. cbs affiliate kutv in salt lake city says the fbi believes a missing utah girl was manipulated by an adult into getting into a taxi in mexico. the fbi says elizabeth gonzalez was visiting family in mexico city in june. they say surveillance footage shows the 14-year-old getting into a taxi on june 30th. she was reported missing the next day. authorities say they have no reason to believe that she is not in mexico at the moment. and "the boston globe" reports the family of a teenager who died in a one-chip challenge has filed a lawsuit. he died last september after attempting the viral challenge which involved eating an extremely spicy tortilla chip

largest ever penalty for violating the clean air act. the environmental protection agency and the department of justice says it reached a $241.5 million settlement with the oil company for air pollution it caused in its operations in the fort berthold indian reservation in north dakota. as part of the settlement, marathon oil will have to reduce harmful emissions from those facilities. ♪ the beastie boys fighting for the right not to have one of their songs used in ads without their permission. the '90s group claims the chili's restaurant chain parodied their sabotage video and used a song in a 2022 ad without authorization. in a copyright infringement lawsuit the beastie boys are asking the court for $150,000 in monetary damages. hallmark-plus is launching in mid-september. the new platform will cost $80 a year and will have several new series including a home
