friends, coworkers, citizens. most importantly, we are fellow americans. >> president biden addressing the american people from the oval office this evening a day after a gunman shot at his leading rival in the presidential campaign, donald trump. new details about the suspected gunman fbi investigator say the 20-year-old fired up to eight shots at former president trump. calls for unity continue across the country includeing in the bay area which has its own dark history of political violence. former president trump is in milwaukee tonight ahead of the start of the republican national convention tomorrow. in a new interview tonight, he said he has rewritten his nomination acceptance speech in the wake of the attempt on his life, but refuses to let it change the schedule. federal investigators found explosives in the home of the suspect. secret service killed the 20-year-old shooter after he opened fire at the rally yesterday. the fbi is investigating this as a

possible case of domestic terrorism. charlie demar is there. >> reporter: secret service and federal agents swarmed this neighborhood in bethel park pennsylvania where the shooter lived. the gun used was legally purchased by and registered to the shooter's father matthew crooks. residents in this small community a reacting to one of their own trying to assassinate the former president. >> 20 years old. what a wasted life for what? >> reporter: the shooter graduated from bethel park high school in 2022. video shows the moment he received his diploma. >> thomas crooks. >> reporter: former classmate jason color says the shooter was a loner who was bullyied. >> you know how kids are. he didn't dress like anyone else. >> did you think he was capable like that? >> no. that is not something

you want to think about. >> reporter: another former classmate said he was a good student, especially interested in government and history. >> it was nothing out of the ordinary. he was a nice kid and i had never had an experience with him where i was like he isn't nice. >> reporter: the shooter was registered as a republican. though federal records indicated he previously made a $15 donation to a democratic aligned group. the 20-year-old worked at a local nursing home. in may, he graduated with an associate's degree in engineering and science. >> at this point, the investigators believe the shooter acted alone. fbi warning threats of politically motivated violence have spiked online since the assassination attempt. >> there is no place in america for this kind of violence for any violence ever. period, no exceptions. we can't allow

this violence to be normalized. you know the political record in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool down. we all have a responsibility to do that. disagreement is inevitable. it is part of human nature. politics must never be a battle or a killing field. i believe politics ought to be an arena for peaceful debate. to pursue justice and make decisions guided by the declaration of independence and our constitution. we stand for america not of extremism and fury but decency and grace. >> more questions are being raised about security failures at the rally. >> the crowd had waited in 90-degree heat for hours for the former president. he took the stage at 6:03 on saturday. as mr. trump spoke, the shooter was taking aim from the top of a building 410 feet away

outside the security perimeter. eyewitnesses say they tried to alert secret service. >> saw the guy move from roof to roof. >> we are pointing, we are pointing at the guy. we can clearly see him with a rifle. >> cbs news has learned that at least one police officer did encounter the gunman but was forced back when he pointed his weapon at the officer. >> take a look at what happened. [ sound of gunfire ] >> get down, get down. >> at 6:11 p.m., six to eight rounds missed trump by inches. one of the rounds clipping his right ears. his head was turned causing blood to flow from the wound. within seconds the secret service sniper was seen taking out the gunman. his body seen on top of the building with an ar-style rifle still in his hands. on stage, agents pulled the former president to the ground forming a human shield. took 60 seconds before trump emerged bloody but

raising his fist and yelling fight. as trump was rushed into a waiting suv less than two minutes after the first shot was fired. back in the bay area, several supporters of the former president gathered on the overpass in lafayette today to show their support for the former president. others took this sunday to pray for mr. trump, the other victims and the country as they tell da lin political violence is not the answer. >> reporter: in east oakland at this gospel church, every sunday service starts with upbeat music. energy. and passion. on this sunday, bishop bob jackson said a few more prayers. prayers for donald trump and for those killed and injured in the shooting. church

member shalika thomas said she prayed for the victims. >> it was very evil what that person did. very demommic behavior. >> reporter: she understands the pain of losing a loved one. someone shot and killed her sister and she is now raising her nephew. >> there's not a lot of role models here so i have to bring him to church and make sure he goes every sunday with me. >> reporter: she says the assassination attempt is the result of division and hate. >> we are so, so divided. i'm not even sure that we all are going to ever agree. but one thing we can do is that we can be courteous to one another and respect each other's ideas and try to move forward because we all have to live in this country together. >> didn't like the man, whatever else he was saying, just don't vote for him. >> reporter: bishop bob says the church is apolitical. and no matter how people feel about

trump, violence is wrong. >> i think this nation needs to get back to god so we can have some godly principles and standards and people can have love for each other instead of the hate that we see in this country now. >> reporter: for salika, she is getting into politics and running for the at large city council seat in oakland to stop the violence locally and hopefully restore some civility. >> we're going to make oakland great. >> a lot of this is familiar in this country. the acts are nothing new. seven out of nine of the last presidents have been targets of violence. four u.s. presidents have been assassinated in office. lincoln, garfield, mckinley, and president kennedy in dallas in 1963. ronald reagan and gerald ford survived

assassination attempts. one in san francisco. he was leaving the saint francis hotel in 1975 when a member of the manson family fired one shot at him and missed. president reagan was shot walking to his vehicle after giving a speech in washington in 1981. three other people were shot in that incident including his press secretary james brady. who then spent a lifetime advocating for gun control. the bay area is all too familiar with this kind of political violence. both in our distant and very recent past. >> reporter: harvey milk, the first openly gay man to be elected into public office in california was shot and killed in 1978. the corners of castro and market streets have been known as harvey milk plaza since 1985. the attempted assassination of former president donald trump brought moments of heavy reflection for those who still honor harvey

milk to this day. this day and age in a democracy, we should be able to treat one another with respect. we wanted to promote civility in our discourse. >> reporter: jeffrey quong is part of the lgbtq harvey milk democratic club. >> it was a very sorrowful and tragic moment in san francisco history that we still commemorate every single year on that night of of the shootings. and just to see that kind of political violence again be in the headlines of our nation's news is troubling. >> reporter: the harvey milk lgbtq democratic club is a progressive political group advocating for issues former president trump speaks out against. >> irregardless of political differences or even the most visceral policy battles, we should be able to stand

together as americans. and exercise our right to vote. we are a democratic country. and the fact that a violent attack happens against any political leader is unconscionable for all of us. >> reporter: milk and mosconi were killed by fellow politician dan white drawing tens of thousands of mourning marchers in 1978. a memorial where the late diane feinstein spoke out. >> harvey's gone. but he will never be forgotten. >> reporter: the nation's 38th president gerald ford was also the target of two assassination attempts in 1975. the first in sacramento, and the second in san francisco. more recently in 2022, david depape attacked paul pelosi. the husband of the country's 52nd seeker of the house, nancy pelosi. he broke into their home in an attempt to take nancy pelosi hostage. >> someone wielding a hammer breaking in, crashing in, and

attacking a politician? who you may agree or disagree with. but to resort to violence, there is no room for that. >> reporter: he says he and his organization are hoping to counter ongoing political discourse. which he says has included death threats to the milk club this year. >> we want to really lift up that dialogue. and really return to civility and respect and show empathy. someone was shot and killed yesterday. for exercising a right to assemble. that's a basic american civic liberty that we all exercise and should be able to enjoy free from harm. >> reporter: regardless of what anyone believes in politically, this election year should be able to provide a space for people to come out and learn about the issues affecting them. he also says his community and everyone need to

example. a little bit above. a lot of these are maybe two degrees above average. so technically i probably can't say average because we are a little above it. let's get rid of the morning marine layer which will melt away by 11:00 a.m. everyone will have sunshine. this is monday. this is tuesday, this is wednesday. pick out your part of the bay. we are pretty much staying right here for the three days. what we need to do is remove the numbers and what i want you to see for saturday, saturday's numbers on here, i'm just going to pick out some of the representative spots. and the places that matter the most. let's check out the inland valley. your numbers tomorrow are mid 80s . pleasanton, 97. livermore, two degrees shy of 100. san jose, back to the 90s , so not as
