for the republican national convention which is set to kick off later today. this just a day after being injured during an assassination attempt at a pennsylvania rally in a moment that shocked the world. how trump is doing, and what he says about the shooting. want to speak to you tonight about the need for us to lower the temperature in our politics. >> president biden delivers a rare primetime address from the oval office calling on americans to reject political violence as he directs an independent review of the security at the trump rally. and new details about the shooter. did he act alone, and are we any closer to determining a motive? good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. former president donald trump is in milwaukee this morning for the republican national convention just days after surviving an assassination attempt at a pennsylvania rally. here's what we know about the investigation -- the fbi has not

ruled out possible domestic terrorism in saturday's shooting that left one suspect dead and two injured. investigators are scouring the social media accounts of the gunman, 20-year-old thomas matthew crooks. so far they have not identified an idealogy associated with him. in a televised address last night, president biden called on americans to stand together and to not allow this violence to be normalized. cbs' sabrina franza is in milwaukee where thousands will be attending the republican national convention as it gets under way today. good morning, sabrina. >> reporter: good morning. this morning the fbi is saying there are no known threats to the rnc or to anyone attending the rnc, but all of this while their meticulous investigation into the attempted assassination of the presumptive nominee and former president trump continues. there's a heavy security presence in milwaukee as the republican national convention begins later today. >> i feel pretty safe. >> reporter: the u.s. secret service says it's keeping its

securities plan as is just two days after a gunman opened fire at former president trump's rally in butler, pennsylvania. >> we have accounted for various security scenarios that may arise, and we are confident in the plan we have implemented. >> reporter: former president trump arrived in milwaukee yesterday. in a newspaper interview he said he plans to change his speech later in the week in light of the shooting. trump also said had he not looked away from the crowd at the moment of the shooting he may have been killed. during an oval office address, president biden said he had a brief phone conversation with trump after the shooting. >> we can't allow this violence to be normalized. you know, the political rhetoric in this country has gotten very heated. it's time to cool it down. >> reporter: authorities say the gunman, identified as 20-year-old thomas matthew crooks, of bethel park, pennsylvania, was killed by a u.s. secret service sniper. investigators say an ar-style rifle found near his body was

purchased legally and registered to his father, and that bomb materials were found in his home and vehicle. >> we have graduated with him, and it was just something i would have never seen coming. >> reporter: president biden has ordered an independent review of the incident. the fbi's investigating the shooting as an assassination attempt and potential domestic terrorism. here at the convention, about 2,400 delegates from across the country are expected to come together today to officially nominate the former president for a third time in a roll call vote. anne-marie? >> sabrina franza in milwaukee. thank you so much. ahead on "cbs mornings," the latest on the trump rally shooting investigation, and we're going to speak with senator ron johnson of wisconsin. we are learning more about the victim at the shooting.

friefrt firefighter corey comperatore was killed while protecting his family from the gunfire. meg oliver has more on him. >> reporter: in pennsylvania, retired chief corey comperatore's fire gear hangs in his locker at the buffalo township fire department. >> he was a family loving, god-fearing man. >> reporter: witnesses say the 50-year-old veteran firefighter died trying to shield his family from gunfire at the trump rally. second lieutenant craig cirrincione. what's it like when you look over and see his gear hanging here today? >> heartbreaking. almost don't -- don't understand it, how it could happen. >> reporter: comperatore was married to his high school sweetheart helen. the couple had two daughters. [ screams ] after the shots rang out, a rally attending emergency room doctor, tried to save comperatore. >> i looked up to see his family who had witnessed my efforts at resuscitation. and the look on their faces said it all. >> reporter: two other gunshot victims are in stable condition. 57-year-old david dutch and

74-year-old james copenhaver. back at the firehouse, comperatore's firefighter brothers are paying tribute with flags flying at half staff. >> he was a man that was full of love, and there's too much hate going on right now. and we don't need to make this about hate at all. it's just -- hug your family, keep them close. that's what he would do. >> reporter: as the fire department and community mourns comperatore, his wife paid tribute in a private facebook post saying her husband died the hero he always was. he would have it no other way. meg oliver, cbs news, pennsylvania. the attempt on donald trump's life is reverberating outside the u.s. leaders around the world are expressing their concern. cbs' ian lee looks at the response from allies and rivals. donald trump has survived an ars assasssass -- assassination

[ speaking in a global language ] reactions came pouring in. >> this was an attack on america. it was an attack on democracy. >> reporter: ukrainian president volodymyr zelenskyy called the attack an appalling crime. on social media, many allies sent their best wishes for a speedy recovery, including leaders of the uk, france, canada, and japan. around the world politicians have increasingly found themselves in the assassins' cross hairs as extremists look for extreme solutions. in 2022 a gunman shot and killed former japanese prime minister shinzo abe while he was giving a speech. slovak prime minister robert fico survived an assassination attempt, being shot several times. while president trump has had a rocky and at times tense relationship with many world leaders, the condemnation of political violence was unanimous even from america's foes.

rhetoric. donald trump's wife melania issued an emotional statement on social media. she wrote when she saw the, quote, violent bullet strike her husband, she realized her life and her son barron's was on the brink of devastating change. the former first lady went on to say a monster attempted to wring out donald's passion, ingenuity, laughter, love of music and inspiration. she said dawn is here again, let us reunite. former speaker of the house kevin mccarthy says he spoke with donald trump yesterday. he shared details of his call during an interview last night with "cbs evening news" anchor and managing editor norah o'donnell. >> he's upbeat. we talked about it. he talked to me about hearing the sound of the bullet slashing through his ear. then he was in total trump form where he was educating me that there was a lot of blood within the ear. you might learn this because you got big ears. kind of humorous. but i could tell -- anybody that's been through this, got to change them somewhat.

what he went through. he really wanted to thank those who prayed for him. he was worried about the family who the individual had died coming to his event. he was looking forward to coming up here in milwaukee. >> reporter: did he seem shaken at all? >> not what you would thought of. no. i think -- he's been through so much in life. even if you take the last year, i don't know of any person that could go through indictments, trials, being trying to thrown off, and now this. i mean, he has more fortitude than anyone i know -- and to compartmentalize this. but this is a moment in time, though, i think will affect him somewhat. you cannot be that close to losing your life, be in a situation where someone shot eight bullets, where somebody in your own rally got shot, that it doesn't affect you in some manner. >> reporter: how do you think it changes his presidential race? >> i don't know politically where it's at. i think seeing how he dealt with that -- if i'm just an average
