[ chanting "usa" ] former president trump donald trump rallies the faithful at the republican national convention. his first public appearance with his ear bandaged after surviving an assassination attempt as he stands alongside his new running mate. trump rally shooting. what the gunman did hours before the event as the secret service faces new questions about securing the building he fired from. and summer twisters. an outbreak of twisters in the northwest takes out power for half a million customers and grounds planes at o'hare. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. opening night of the republican national convention brought a dramatic moment when donald trump made a surprise entrance. trump was subdued and appeared emotional as he walked out and pumped his fist to a krouds.

he had a bandaged ear from an assassination attempt two days before. people waited for him to make his appearance. sabrina franza is at the convention in mach with a wrap-up of night one. sabrina, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. president donald trump walked out on the convention floor with a show of strength for his supporters, securing a republican national nomination for a third time now with a new running mate. former president donald trump arrived to tears on night one of the republican national convention. trump's ear was covered by a bandage in his first public appearance since surviving saturday's assassination attempt. the former president stood alongside his running mate, 39-year-old jd vance who trump announced earlier in the day.

vance first rose to public prominence to his best-selling memoir turned hollywood film. lil billy elegy. he once described himself as a never trump guy but says trump's presidency changed his mind. president joe biden also reacted to the vp pick. >> he's a clone of trump on the issues. i don't see any issue. >> reporter: he accepted the nomination in a speech. >> we hereby nominate every single one of them for the greatest president that's ever lived, and that's donald j. trump. >> reporter: yesterday the parts officially nominated trump in a roll call. the theme focused the economy with speeches from governors, members of congress, and the head of the teamsters union. >> we will work with a bipartisan coalition ready for something real for the american worker. >> reporter: today's theme is make america safe again.

his 2024 rival nikki haley is scheduled to speak. the convention will also talk about the republican party's new platform, which includes a softer stansce on abortion, tax cuts, and mass deportations for people here in the united states illegally. i'm sabrina franza in milwaukee. back to you. we're learning new details about the shooter at donald trump's rally in pennsylvania. thomas matthew crooks went to a gun range near pittsburgh in the days before the shooting and just hours ahead of the rally he bought a box of ammunition for his father's a.r.-style rifle. there's still no word on a motive, though, even though investigators cracked his cellphone. cbs's scott macfarlane reports. >> reporter: cbs news has learned the secret service did not sweep the building the shooter used to fire on the former president even though it had a direct line to the stage, it was outside the security perimeter, but a local sniper team was inside the building at the time of the shooting.

new video shows people in the crowd were pointing to the man on the roof at least two minutes before the first shot was fired. 13 seconds before the shooter opens fire, people run away from the building. former president trump was on the stage a little more than 400 feet away where two sets of sniper teams behind him point in the direction of the shooter appearing to spot something before the first shot rings out. the sniper teams open fire, killing the would-be assassin. >> the local service is largely operating on a different radio channel than the secret service. >> reporter: the secret service was relying on local police to fill out part of its specialized protective unit. >> when i looked up, i saw blood on the podium. >> reporter: john abel was behind trump when the shooting began. >> at any point in time since then have you asked yourself how could this possibly happen? how could this be such a failure?

>> yeah, that was the only thing that's going through my mind for the last 48 hours. it just didn't make any sense to me, and it still doesn't make sense to me how they allowed this to happen at all. >> reporter: one person in the crowd was killed, two others critically injured. >> do you feel like somebody let you down? >> absolutely, absolutely. >> reporter: scott macfarlane, cbs news, butler, pennsylvania. now to a legal victory for donald trump. the classified documents case against him has been dismissed. a federal judge sided with the defense's argument that the appointment of special counsel jack smith was unconstitutional. cbs news chief legal correspondent jan crawford explains. >> reporter: in her 93-page decision judge aileen cannon says the special counsel was not properly appointed under federal for law, ending for now jack smith's prosecution of the former president for his handling of the classified documents. >> i had every right to have these documents, personal belongings in boxes. >> reporter: on truth social trump hailed the dismissal of

what he called a lawless indictment. the decision largely tracks a decision by justice clarence thomas in this month's presidential immunity case when he suggests smith's appointment was unconstitution allege. cannon agreed because among other reasons smith was an inferior officer indicting trump. if the political branches wish to grant the attorney general power to appoint smith to investigate and prosecute this action with the full powers of the united states attorney, there is a valid means by which to do so. >> she's not saying it's impossible to have a special counsel appointed. she's saying if you are going to do it, there are specific pathways that are permissible under the constitution to do it, and the justice department just didn't take one of those pathways here. >> reporter: this is widely seen as the strongest of the cases against trump.

it was likely likely before the election in november. now the odds are about zero. jan crawford, cbs news, washington. president biden is ordering the secret service to protect independent presidential candidate robert f. kennedy jr. he has been asking for security after several incidents including a man trespassing his home in los angeles last year. homeland security officials said biden had directed the protection for kennedy both prior to and after the trump rally shooting. overnight storms in the midwest unleashed multiple tornadoes. herb rain and strong winds hit the chicago area. the national weather service reported as many as ten twisters were on the ground. at one point a ground stop was issued at o'hare international airport. in central iowa, at least one tornado was confirmed. cedar rapids saw hail and rain. all told, more than 460,000 customers were left without power. coming up, the
