his deep disappointment at not being able to join us this afternoon. the president has been at many events, as we all know, and he just tested positive for covid. >> reporter: the diagnosis forced president biden to bow out of his appearance before latino voters in las vegas late wednesday afternoon. he made the trip west to reassure them he is the only man to lead the country. biden captured a majority of hispanic voters in 2020, but their support has been declining. a new "associated press" norc center for public affairs research poll reveals two-thirds of democrats say the president should exit the race with only about three in ten feeling extremely or very confident biden has the mental capacity to serve effectively as president. representative adam schiff became the latest high-profile democrat to urge biden to pass the baton saying, quote, i have serious concerns about whether the president can defeat donald trump in november.

mr. biden reiterated his plan to stay in the race on b.e.t. as more congressional democrats call for president biden to exit the race, the white house points out he still enjoys support from key allies such as the chairman of the congressional black and hispanic caucuses along with prominent democratic governors and mayors. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. law enforcement officials are investigating the security failures at the pennsylvania rally where a gunman opened fire on donald trump last weekend. cbs' meg oliver has new details and images. >> reporter: new video shows former president donald trump arriving at butler memorial hospital saturday just minutes after surviving an assassination attempt. u.s. secret service are seen surrounding his suv. >> there he is. >> there he is! >> reporter: before rushing him inside the e.r. over an hour earlier the alleged assassin, thomas matthew crooks, was caught on video wandering around.

a local tactical sniper also snapped this photo of him roughly 26 minutes before he climbed onto a building. [ screams ] >> reporter: and attempted to kill the former president. [ gunshots ] >> get down, get down! >> reporter: crooks had on him a phone and what appears to be a remote transmitter potentially intended to set off suspicious devices he had in his car and home. according to a law enforcement bulletin obtained by cbs news, crooks received multiple packages over the last several months. some possibly containing hazardous material. a cbs news analysis has found the sniper team closest to the shooter would have had their line of sight likely obscured by trees, making it difficult for them to see him clearly. the team farther away had to reset before taking the single shot that neutralized the target. a private funeral is planned on friday for corey comparatore, the retired firefighter killed. meanwhile, two others have been

upgraded from critical to serious condition, including 74-year-old james copenhaver, shot twice. >> he loves his country. he's somebody that you would want as your next-door neighbor. >> reporter: crystal barr is copenhaver's family friend. how is he doing? >> i think he's definitely on the road to recovery. people went there for an exciting day, and instead lives were changed. >> reporter: multiple federal agencies have launched investigations into the secret service failure here. former president trump will not return for the victim's funeral on friday due to security reasons. meg oliver, cbs news, butler, pennsylvania. the national weather service issued a rare flash flood emergency in northern arkansas. water rescues and evacuations took place after as much as 11 inches of rain fell yesterday. nearly 100 people had to be evacuated from a nursing home. the flooding even swept one home off its foundation. the u.s. has officially dismantled a temporary pier in gaza.

air national guard member pleaded guilty earlier this year to federal charges for leaking highly classified military documents on social media. he could be sentenced to nearly 17 years in prison on those charges. military prosecutors say he will also face charges of disobeying orders and obstructing justice. his lawyers say he's being prosecuted twice for the same offense. "the new york times" says traces of cyanide were found in the blood of six people found dead in a hotel room in bangkok. that's according to police in thailand. the bodies, including two americans, were found tuesday in the grand hyatt hotel. they were last seen alive the day before when food was delivered to the room. traces of cyanide were also found in teacups. officials say the motive may be an investment deal gone bad. and the "los angeles times" says the navy exonerated more than 250 black sailors who were unjustly punished after a deadly port explosion in 1944. they were court-martialed for
