is that enough, though, to drive customers away and what about the other industries that seem to be nickel and diming us? well, that conversation in just a few minutes, but first a look at your news headlines. at least one person was killed in a crash on 680 in fremont. the chp says a big rig and about five cars crashed into each other in the southbound lanes. it happened just after seven o'clock this morning near the mission boulevard south off ramp. the big rig was carrying about 10,000 pounds of beef. bart started replacing the fare gates of the civic center station today, the new taller gates are meant to stop people from hopping over and not paying, bart says it will take several months to install. this is the first station, san francisco, to get the new gates. the group is calling on san francisco voters to keep the great highway open to cars. they held a rally today, saying a permanent closure would hurt neighbors and nearby businesses. right now, a stretch of the highway is closed to traffic on weekends. it would close seven days a

week if voters passed the measure in november. in south san jose lawmakers. and law enforcement raised the alarm about the rise in mail theft, the postal service says more than 30 letter carriers were robbed in the bay area last year and one of them was beaten. in palo alto. the number of arrests was also up 73% this year. five of the candidates running to be the next mayor of san francisco faced off in a debate hosted by one of the most influential unions in the city. the san francisco firefighters union next month the union will vote on which candid candidate they will endorse. new pressure on president biden to reconsider his presidential run, according to the washington post. former president barack obama expressed concern about his ability to beat former president donald trump president biden is isolating at his home in delaware after testing positive for covid. today is the final day of the republican national convention. trump will deliver his acceptance speech tonight. days after he survived the

assassination attempt. the former president says he rewrote his speech to focus on unity. and bob newhart has died his hollywood career spent decades on tv and in movies, his publicist says he died at his home in los angeles after a series of short illnesses. bob newhart was 94 years old. and veteran news anchor lou dobbs has died. he spent more than two decades at cnn and went on to fox business network and was known for his political commentary. job. was 78. onto our first alert weather. now there's an air quality advisory. tomorrow due to all that smoke from the wildfires to our north. meantime. our bay area heat is ramping up. meteorologist zoe minces in the virtual view studio for us, so we continues all across the bay area today. we're still looking at a little bit of that fog holding on tight to our coastal communities that's keeping them cooler. but for the rest of the bay area, the heat again is going to be a bigger issue today than what we saw

yesterday and it's going to continue to be an issue through tomorrow as well. which is the reason that we do have more widespread areas. in orange where there is that moderate chance for heat related illness and a couple of areas highlighted in red closer to the north bay communities tomorrow, though, becomes a lot more widespread. when it comes to that higher risk for heat related illnesses, especially inland area communities. those high temperatures are going to be about 5 to 15 degrees above average, not going to be the exception. massive heat record breaking heat that we saw last week, but it's definitely something that we're going to continue to keep our eyes on. but check out saturday. it is going to be a lot more comfortable about 10 degrees cooler into the weekend of whether ahead of us as the area of high pressure that's going to continue to dominate the weather today and into tomorrow. it's not going to last much longer than that area of low pressure will arrive by the weekend. that's going to bring much stronger seabreeze. and influence our weather by bringing more clouds. so good news is on the way the heat is not going to stick around forever. that's just something to keep your eyes on those over the next couple of days. today,

though, it is still going to be a hot one and heat safety is still going to be top of mind high temperatures closer to daily city in the upper sixties san francisco low seventies upper seventies in oakland, so you're really feeling the heat further. inland? you go because they're not being influenced by that onshore flow. nineties all across our inland east bay communities upper nineties and especially with heat indices a couple of degrees warmer. heat safety again is going to be top of mind as we step out this afternoon over the next seven days, though, we're going to go kind of on a roller coaster ride together, up and up and up. all the way through tomorrow, where temperatures are going to be in the triple digits, but then a huge crash down by the weekend about 10 degrees cooler. by saturday and into sunday. it's not going to last forever, though you notice by next week, the heat once again begins to build this weekend is going to be a great one to get out. enjoy yourself. and even if you want to head on closer to the bay, where it will be a bit more comfortable. again practicing safety today and tomorrow. >liz>thanks. you, zoe. california has officially done away with those junk fees or

there's a restaurant free and it's 20%. but there is no tipping. way outrageous because some of the fees we've seen on the road. restaurants and hotels. pretty outrageous. i think transparency is key. under the new rules, transparency will be paramount. so customers know exactly what they're paying for the golden gate restaurant association applauded the decision. saying many of its members are independent restaurants that rely on these line item charges to provide employee benefits and supports pay equity >having that little extra money for them, not for me, not for my management. they're on salary. they do a better job for our guests. a win win, says chen is special. considering the cost of doing business. >liz>restaurants have a year to get into. compliance with any changes to their menus. and we talked with state senator bill dodd, one of the lawmakers behind this bill, and he says, making changes now as some restaurants are will help everyone.

>liz>yeah. airlines have been making big money from the so called junk. fees. charging for things like extra bags. the biden administration has been cracking down, though, and the department of transportation says new transparency rules could save passengers more than half a billion dollars a year. kris van cleave spoke with a talk top top executive at spirit airlines, about a big change there, to try to get passengers back. when darrell plunkett had to change his spirit flight from

fort lauderdale to atlanta. he was worried the ultra low cost airline would hit him with a fee. >flexible, actually got a credit back, so i mean, i'll give them their kudos on that, but spirit known for its ally card or pay for everything approach to travel, just dropped its change and cancel fees, while also upping the wait for checked bags to the industry. standard 50 pounds. as it looks to win back flyers. >we've been evaluating this for quite some time. so it's not something that we have just decided to do overnight. and quite frankly, it's something that our customers want. klein is spirits chief commercial officer >what we've seen over time is less people are actually flying on spirit. so we believe the changes we're making. its not just about the individual who is already flying on our aircraft. it's about attracting new customers. the move comes as bigger airlines are fighting for spirits, costco conscious wires. its competitor frontier dropped most change and cancel fees while shifting its focus to bundled services. it also follows the department of

transportation announcing new regulations. aimed at making airline fees more transparent >anytime an airline drops those fees altogether. we think that's something consumers will welcome. those changes cancel fees generated 150 million million for spirit last year. klein is betting dropping them now will help put the airline on a path to profitability. >everything we're looking to do right now is to make the guest experience. more seamless. and give flexibility. to our guests right now, spirit and frontier are fighting. they are fighting to stay in business. airline analyst henry harteveldt. >they are reacting to the changes that larger airlines have made. they've seen that that could be a reason why people have avoided flying them and they're saying okay? let's take away that obstacle. is this good for consumers? do you think yeah. this is good for consumers. just as the busiest summer travel season ever hits its peak. kris van cleave cbs news

phoenix >liz>and with competition for passengers, so tight these days southwest even partnered with amazon, it offered discounted fares during the prime day event this week. and one thing some of you are willing to pay a little extra four is airport lounges. some of them are pretty sweet to this is the chase. sapphire lounge at laguardia airport. it's really nice look at that food. is everything from full meals and craft cocktails to sponsor services. there's even a playroom for the kids and a game room but to get inside, you need to be a cardholder or one of their guests. the annual credit card fee is 500 bucks. >obviously, it cause money to provide all this to your customers. but you find this is the reason that people retain their cards. one of the top reasons people both get and keep their card. the market is moving so fast, i think, even since we introduced some of these features, we're seeing more and more of the competition. begin to mimic them.

>liz>yeah, believe it or not, airport lounges are a fierce battle field for credit card companies. hoping to bank customers. american express's centurion lounges are in almost 30. locations around the globe. and capital one is expanding quickly, too. lounges are one reason the points guy brian kelly says cards with high any wolf fees of 500 bucks or more can actually be worth it. >concessions and airports, bottles of water 10 bucks. you've got a family and you can go to the lounge and get everyone fed and happy on a flight. there's a huge value to that. >>anything you can do to make traveling with the calgary easier as well worth it. >liz>i hear that chase, says 70%. of the interest in those fee based credit cards comes from millennials and gen. z. that's why a lot of these lounges are now built for young. families. well, inflation is on just about everyone's minds. and as we check our bank accounts, the good news is inflation actually slowed down more than expected in june. also compared to a year ago. gas prices are down

2.5% and in the used car market prices are also down more than 10%. but rent is up 5.2 percent and auto insurance is also up sharply. by 19.5. now we're required by law to have a car insurance. but what are drivers supposed to do? cbs senior business and tech correspondent jolene kent look at the options and what's driving up the cost so much? >almost almost double. it was almost double in boston, kayla mills his had it with her car insurance. >that is your new monthly rate, $520. for car insurance. that is more then the car payment on my lease. this tiktok. she posted went viral thousands sounding off in the comments. afford that >can i? yes, like i can pay it. but being able to afford it while also affording the rising costs of everything else going on. i made an executive decision to let go of my car.

overall consumer prices grew more slowly in june. up 3% compared to a year ago. cooling off yet again, otto auto insurance prices, though, skyrocketed. nearly 20%. hovering. at highs not seen since the 1970 seventys. the national average for full coverage, car insurance is now nearly 2300. a year or $190. a month. when you got this new premium, what do you think >i was, honestly shocked. it's a little bit of anger because there aren't really answers that are given when you're asking why the rate is increasing. experts say car insurance premiums continue to rise because of the growing price. of parts and labor. the way people drive also got riskier with more speeding and distractions. and more lawyers are involved in claims increasing premiums. across the board. some drivers are making tough and sometimes illegal choices to cut costs. >some people are making the choice to essentially break the

law and not purchase coverage. the other key piece that we are seeing that you know, people are looking at increasing deductibles. some people are dropping physical damage coverage. to lower your premium experts recommend shop around and look for ways to bundle home or renters insurance. choose a higher deductible to lower your monthly payment and ask your insurer if sharing you're driving data or taking an online safety course can help with a discount. meantime, mills is making the best of her carless. lifestyle. >most frustrating is that i and someone who can choose to give up my car and i feel like it's a luxury to be able to do that. i live in a walkable city, but most of the us has is not walkable. >liz>the insurance information institute says unfortunately, prices are likely to continue to climb to the end. did this year, but come next year they could come down and stabilized, moving forward, depending on your insurance company. well, coming up no new clothes. no new anything. for a whole year or even more could you do it by
