spending years as a political reporter. he says he, like many democrats, has felt the exhaustion and concern over the last several weeks watching biden's campaign unravel. >> i don't blame biden for any of this. i don't think anyone blames biden. the shakeup right now, instantly, has taken old age out of the equation. it is no longer about an old enfeebled candidate who can't complete a sentence who mixes up countries and words , who should never have been on that stage in the debate. and that is all off the table now. >> reporter: what is on the table is a likely matchup between kamala harris and former president trump. some, like democratic donor mark buell's say she is the best shot for democrats to hold onto the white house in november. >> can't say that anyone else is in any better shape and i think the delegates then will see how far they go. but i think she is very competitive. >> reporter: has a personal

5:36 pm
selecting a new nominee. the first would be a virtual vote that could solidify a candidate early next month. the other is an open convention where delegates would debate on the convention floor, listening to arguments from any other potential candidates. that hasn't happened since 1968 but the parallels between these two races and this year are only just growing. >> thank you, laura. san francisco mayor london breed praise president biden's decision to step down as well as his record she also offered an enthusiastic endorsement for vice president kamala harris. >> he stepped up, he pretty much came out of retirement because he knew what was at stake and he helped to lead this country during a very challenging time. we cannot mess around with this opportunity. there is so much at stake and all i can think is, i wish i could travel to battleground states and just go across the country and help elect kamala harris. >> so it looks like the vice

president, at this moment is the front-runner to become the new nominee . it is far from a done deal. joining us live now is political science professor, david mcewen. david, i hope i am pronouncing your name right. and thank you, good deal. i appreciate your taking some time. look, lyndon johnson in 1968 stunned everybody. i don't even know lady bird knew that that night, in may, of '68, that i think lady bird did know that he was going to say i am not running he spent 15 minutes talking about the vietnam war than he turned to the cameras and said if you nominate me i will not accept and if elected i will not serve. so johnson did it in may . do you think that in president biden's case, he waited too long to make such a significant decision? >> that is a great place to start. look, there are some similarities to 1968 and lbj and the timing but obviously we are in a completely different

media and universe in a completely different political universe probably became 1968. this is much like 1964 for republicans . and 1860 for the nation. this particular election. so that is really a big deal. did he come out so late? sure. have democrats had their hair on fire since that awful debate? yes . but they have also been in disarray and disunity while the republicans have been energized and on a mission the juxtaposition on does change with this announcement. no question about that. democratic national committee, the dnc, the rules committee will begin after 48 hours, probably on wednesday. they will set forth what happens to joe biden delegates so that means kamala harris has 48 hours. after that, as can get a little bit swirly so we have to pay attention to that. but she is clear the fact oh nominee she is clearly the person who is first right of refusal. everyone else also gives democrats focus. so the race is now joint. the problem

is we are four weeks out and 100 some odd days out from the election itself. so there's a lot of time. >> dave, have you seen the latest polls about how kamala harris would do vis-à-vis going head-to-head with donald trump? is it any better than biden? >> it is slightly better than biden in certain states but you have got to take a couple of things into account. registered voter polls, we want to pay attention to swing states. donald trump gets a little bit of a bounce from the convention. it's a little bit of a bounce from the attended assassination. those are largely a wash. democrats will get a little bit of a bounce from their convention. that means and labor day, the traditional kickoff, there will be virtually a dead heat race. just to draw your attention, no democrat has received more than 54 percent of the popular vote since 1964 so we forecast a close race. the difference is kamala harris is multiracial, she is a woman, those are huge components to this race when you are facing donald trump. and the unity message has gone
5:40 pm
away. that is not a surprise in some ways. but what does she do when she is the person on the ticket, if she is the nominee, and what is her vice presidential candidate look like? and how do democrats do down ballot? these are open questions that will dominate the convention because democrats don't want a repeat of chicago in 1968 and they often have these group therapy sessions before the nation. you don't want to have that happen in this particular political environment. >> long behind. but it is eerie. and in 1968, a convention for the ages and not in a good way. professor david mcewen, i appreciate it, david, thank you so much. >> nice to see you. thank you. independent presidential candidate robert f kennedy jr. praise president joe biden for his decision to drop out of the presidential race. >> his handling of the many difficulties and challenges , personal challenges and tragedies that he suffered during his life with so much admirable conduct.

we are going to get there in one second. the first thing i want to talk about is that you have been out at all today you are looking around, the sky does not look ready. there is wildfire smoke in our sky. but when i look at the air quality sensors, and i just looked right before went on the air, down here on the ground, almost all of them are in the green, which means it is good . worst case scenario, some of it is moderate but just a quick review on that, there's a couple of wildfires burning down in the southern sierra this deep plume of red shows you where the higher concentrations of smoke are in the atmosphere. you can see most of us is being held toward the sierra. some of it is drifting overhead for us but if we play the high resolution forecast forward you can see most of it continues to stay away. is is good news. by the way, that is the rich fire. that is the one burning on the border with lake and colusa county. thank fully the smoke from that will also continue to move away. so let's use the virtual map because we are going to go in order. if i got
