down. plus, harris for president. biden endorses vice president kamala harris to be the presidential nominee as key democrats start to throw their support behind her, but will she face challenges for the nomination, and what's the next step for the democratic party? good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. it has never happened this close to a presidential election -- a presumptive nominee abruptly quitting the race. president biden's stunning announcement yesterday to step aside in his white house bid just months ahead of the november election. biden saying in a letter that it is in the best interests of the party and country. he plans to address the nation later on this week. the dnc says it will meet wednesday to discuss the process for picking a new nominee and promises transparency. skyler henry is tracking the developments in washington. good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you. yeah, in the hours following

president biden's decision a number of top democrats and coalitions flocked around vice president kamala harris with a wave of endorsements and raising a record number in terms of fundraising dollars. now the dnc says that they plan on moving forward united with a nominee that cannot only challenge but beat former president trump in november. this morning vice president kamala harris is picking up support just hours after president biden announced he will no longer seek re-election. the president tweeted, "it's in the best interests of my party and the country for me to stand down and focus solely on fulfilling my duties as president for the remainder of my term," adding his endorsement of harris and urging the party to come together to beat former president donald trump. >> with joe biden as the heart and soul of our party and kamala harris coming out swinging against this ticket, we've got the recipe for victory. >> reporter: harris says it is

her inension to earn and win -- intention to earn and win the nomination. >> are you ready to make your vices heard? [ cheers ] >> reporter: she's picked up endorsements from multiple labor organizations and party heavyweights like the clintons. vice president kamala harris is piling up supports from members of congress. the dnc says it will soon implement a framework to select a nominee. >> the process needs to be open to anyone else who thinks they can make a strong case that they can prevail in the battleground states, and she'll be the stronger for the contest. >> reporter: last night republican house speaker mike johnson called on biden to resign the presidency after bashing plans to replace him. >> it would be wrong and i think unlawful in accordance to states' rules for a handful of people to switch it out because they don't like the candidate any longer. >> reporter: president biden has been isolating at his delaware home after testing positive for covid-19. he'll address the nation later this week. and former president trump slammed democrats and wouldn't say whether he would debate vice president kamala harris should

she become the nominee. we should point out that several other top democrats have not yet endorsed harris either. that includes former president obama. a source familiar tells cbs news that he is waiting until the nominee becomes official, just as he did in 2020. anne-marie? >> all right. skyler henry in washington. thank you. kamala harris is expected to make one of her first public appearances at the white house today since biden dropped his re-election bid. if harris becomes the democratic presidential nominee she will have plenty of potential running mates to choose from. cristian benevides reports on that. >> reporter: what will the democratic ticket look like? all eyes are on vice president kamala harris who was endorsed by president biden. harris has been on the campaign trail this week. >> the most existential, consequential, and important election of our lifetime. >> reporter: the vice president has a long career as a prosecutor, served in public office as the district attorney in san francisco, before

becoming the state attorney general, and then a u.s. senator representing california. she gained attention in 2018 for her interrogation of then-supreme court nominee brett kavanaugh. >> i'll repeat the question. can you think of any laws that give the government the power to make decisions about the male body? >> i'm not -- i'm not thinking of any right now, senator. >> reporter: harris was part of a crowded democratic field vying for the nomination in 2020 before biden picked her as his running mate. if harris is at the top of the ticket now, there's a long list of potential vp contenders, all of whom have their own presidential ambition including michigan governor gretchen whitmer. if she's chosen it would be the first all-female presidential ticket. california governor gavin newsom, pennsylvania governor josh shapiro, and transportation secretary pete buttigieg are also possible contenders. it's not yet clear if all of president biden's delegates will

line up behind harris. polling shows while she measures up stronger than biden against former president trump, she still trails him. and some democrats would prefer an open primary process during the convention. cbs news has also learned that independent senator joe manchin is being urged to run, and he's considering the option. cristian benevides, cbs news. well, following president biden's historic decision to drop out of the race, voters across the country are offering their thoughts. cbs' jim axelrod has more. >> reporter: in the summer of surprises, this was another weekend of bold-faced headlines to be digested by voters like richard freeman in ohio, a democrat. >> i think it's a good decision. i think he didn't have a chance against trump. too many people were concerned about his age, which i was, too. >> reporter: this retired bar owner in michigan had wanted to see the president drop out ever since the debate. >> yes, yes.

after seeing him, how bad he's been failing health-wise, i think it's a good thing that he did drop out. >> reporter: the latest cbs poll of registered voters overwhelmingly showed most americans did not think mr. biden has the mental and cognitive health to serve as president. >> i can't say that i'm too fully surprised, but i mean, i think honestly didn't think that was going to happen. just hearing it now, it makes sense. >> reporter: from coast to coast, from suburban new york city -- >> i'm disappointed because i felt like he was pushed out, and i really felt like the democrats should have stood behind him. >> reporter: to democrats in philadelphia -- >> i think it's a good decision. i think there will be better suited by new blood that will come to the democratic party. >> reporter: to republicans sweating it out in phoenix, there were a lot of feelings about joe biden ending his campaign. but not a lot of surprise. >> i just didn't feel like he was mentally capable to run this

race. and also, i mean, yes, i am republican, but i also felt like it was also to a disadvantage to him and his party to also stay running. >> reporter: it is an old rule of politics that americans don't really start focusing on presidential elections until labor day. not this cycle. after the last two july weekends, voters would have every reason to wonder what the next one is going to bring. jim axelrod, cbs news, washington. donald trump is reacting to biden's announcement, telling cbs news that it came as a shock to the country and adding that harris is no better than biden. trump and his running mate j.d. vance held their first rally together saturday in the battleground state of michigan. the former president spoke about the assassination attempt saying he took a bullet for democracy. and the director of the secret service is set to appear today before the house oversight committee. it comes as kimberly cheatle faces increasing calls from bipartisan lawmakers to resign after the assassination attempt

debate. biden quickly endorsed vice president kamala harris to replace him as the democratic presidential nominee. israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu is heading to washington today where he's supposed to meet with president biden and vice president kamala harris this week. the "associated press" says the person -- rather, says a person familiar with biden's schedule confirmed that he will meet with netanyahu at the white house. netanyahu will also address a joint session of congress on wednesday, and it comes as israel says it shot down a missile launched from yemen before it crossed into israeli territory. houthi rebels said they fired several missiles yesterday in retaliation for a deadly israeli air strike saturday on military targets near a port in yemen. a houthi drone attack killed one person in tel aviv friday. and delta airlines continues to face -- rather continues to cancel flights days after a faulty computer software update caused havoc around the world.

yesterday delta chief executives said that the airline is trying to recover systems to restore a crew tracking system caused by the crowdstrike meltdown. more than 3,500 delta and delta-connection flights have been canceled. delta has already canceled more than 450 flights today. the airline is offering waivers to affected customers. transportation secretary pete buttigieg said delta has an obligation to provide refunds to passengers whose flights are canceled and do not want to rebook. more than 100 firefighters have been battling a wildfire that broke out near salt lake city over the weekend. crews trying to contain the flames on the ground and by air using helicopters and airplanes to drop buckets of water. some 40 homes were evacuated saturday, but the evacuation order was lifted last night. the fire is about 10% contained. and heat-related deaths in the houston area keep rising after hurricane beryl left

american golfer xander schaufele has won his second major tournament. he had a bogey 365 yesterday to win the british open in scotland by two shots. it's his second major title this year. he won the pga championship in may. schauffele is the first player since 2015 to win his first two majors in the same season. caitlin clark and angel reese have gone from rivals to winning teammates. they played on thesame team for the first time saturday at the wnba all-star game in phoenix. the wnba stars beat the u.s. olympic women's team 117-109. arike ogunbowale set a wnba all-star game record with 34 points to win -- rather, to earn mvp honors.
