to be the party's next presidential nominee. secret service admits to security failures as congress investigates the attempted assassination on donald trump. will they cost her her job? and a disturbing illinois cam video. how a woman was shot dead in her own home by a sheriff's deputy. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. vice president harris is quickly consolidating support among dem grademocrats. last night harris secured the nomination and we're also learning that president biden will be back in the white house today for the first time since contracting covid last week and announced he's quitting the race over the weekend. jarred hill has more. jarred, good morning. >> president biden's doctor says his symptoms are almost completely gone. meanwhile vice president harris is picking up some serious steam as she's trying to build her

presidential campaign in less than four months. >> reporter: this morning a critical sign of support for kamala harris's presidential campaign. cbs news estimates a majority of democratic delegates across more than half the u.s. states have endorsed her, enough to win the potential party's vote next month ahead of the democratic election. >> we have an election to win. >> reporter: monday harris stopped by campaign headquarters just a day after president biden pulled out of the race. the president rallied the team over the phone. >> the name has changed at the top of the ticket, but the mission hasn't changed at all. >> reporter: that mission, beat former president donald trump. >> i was a prosecutor. in those roles i took on perpetrators of all times, fraudsters who ripped off consumers, cheaters who broke the rule for your their own gain. so hear me when i say i know donald trump's type. >> reporter: the trump/vance campaign has come out swinging saying harris is worse than

biden and slamming the democratic selection process. >> democrats are the ones who want to throw out 14 million ballots and not elect kamala harris but select kamala harris. with a bunch of billionaires -- >> reporter: but a new cbs news poll shows most democratic voters already want harris as the nominee. >> under the circumstances, she would be my top pick. >> i would love to see the first woman black president. >> reporter: the harris campaign says it's raised tens of millions of dollars since she announced her intention to win the nomination. harris' campaign says most of the 60% came in from folks who had not donated earlier in the cycle and are showing how much excite management she's bringing to the campaign ticket at least right now. she's set to hit the campaign trail in wisconsin. turning now to the investigation into the assassination attempt on former president trump, secret service director kimberly cheatle was

grilled on capitol hill yesterday about her agency's security failures. cbs's scott macfarlane reports. >> reporter: nine days after a would-be assassin opened fire on former president donald trump in butler, pennsylvania -- >> anything to say to the people of butler? >> reporter: -- secret service director kimberly cheatle faced unrelenting criticism. >> based on the fact donald trump is alive, thank god you look incompetent. if he had been killed, you would have looked culpable. >> how did this happen? >> i can tell you you're not making my job easier. >> you're full of [ bleep ] today. yo you're being completely dishonest. >> reporter: she revealed the gunman was spotted and deemed suspicious as many as five times before he opened fire and drove

a drone over the site before the rally and though deemed suspicious he was not seen as a threat. she said trump was not denied any of his security requests that day, but she acknowledged and defended denials of some security requests made on other occasions, but cheatle declined to answer repeated questions about the evidence and the timeline of the shooting. >> how many spent shell casings were found on the roof? >> reporter: citing an ongoing fbi investigation and frustrating the panel. >> you felt like a lot of questions were unanswered. >> oh, yeah, for sure. there were tons of them. >> reporter: she said she apologized to trump last week and said so far no one has been fired as democrats joined calls for her resignation including california's ro khanna. >> shouldn't be partisan. if you have an assassination attempt on a presidential candidate, former candidate, ser secret service should resign. >> reporter: members of the

committee launched their own probe and went to the shooting site. >> someone should have had eyes on that building all the way around so no one ever got on top of that building. >> reporter: the roof just 200 yards from where trump spoke. the secret service director said she didn't personally review plans for the trump rally and that an investigation will be ready in 60 days. members of congress called that time line unacceptably slow. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. well, officials in illinois have released disturbing body camera video that shows the deadly police shooting of sonya massey earlier this month. she called police because of a prowler and was shot inside her own home. now the deputy faces three counts of first-degree murder. cbs's roxana saberi has video that shows moments before her

[ indiscernible ] >> reporter: massey starts to set down the pot and apologizes. grayson fires three times, striking her in the face. prosecutors say grayson's partner tried to give the 36-year-old first aid even though grayson discouraged him. >> i'm going to go get my kit.

>> she's done. you can get it, but that's a head shot. >> reporter: civil rights attorney benjamin crump is representing massey's family. >> so you needed a helping hand, but she got a shot to the face by the police. >> reporter: james wilburn is massey's father. >> i'm heartbroken. i just don't know what to say. >> what's the hardest part about this for you? >> i think the last words that my daughter said to me was, daddy, i love you, and to know and realize that i won't see her again, i can't talk to her again, i can't touch her again. >> reporter: grayson has pleaded not guilty. when reached by cbs news, his attorney had no comment. last week grayson was fired from the sheriff's department. documents obtained by cbs news show he has worked for six different law enforcement agencies since 2020.

tore through a village. a train crashes into a residential area, and a judge's ruling could free a man from prison after more than 30 years. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the st. louis post dispatch reports a judge overturned the murder conviction of a man who spent more than three decades in prison despite claiming his innocence. cristopher dunn was convicted of killing a 15-year-old boy in 1990 and sentenced to prison without parole. it was ordered vacated when two boys recanted their testimony years later. it's not known when dunn will be freed from prison about since the missouri attorney general is appealing the decision. a businessman who sent 800 elderly residents to ride out a hurricane in squalor will spend

no time in prison. he sent patients to a crowded warehouse when hurricane ida approached in 2021. seven residents died. he pleaded no contest to 15 counts. he was sentenced to three years probation and paid to pay more than $1.3 million in restitution and penalties. and "usa today" says a freight train detached and crashed into a residential garage in niagara falls. it's estimated 200 gallons of gasoline escaped. the rail company says it did not impact any waterways. no one was hurt. authorities say the train failed to brake and stop where it should have. the woman living in the house said the same garage was struck by a train in the 1970s when her parents lived there. still ahead, searching for answers. congress wants to talk to the head of crowdstrike about the computer glitch that caused havoc around the world.

reports. >> reporter: the roar of the flames had neighbors running in this riverside community as the haywarden fire erupted sunday afternoon. >> the sound got me the most. it was crackling. sounded like it was right in my ear. >> reporter: he rushed to his grandfather's house to watts err his grass but the fire moved fast. >> a 100-foot wall of fire, curling the flames toward you. >> reporter: his grandfather is still watering his property. >> i've never been in a fire like this before, but the trees are exploding. >> reporter: and the homes were burning. security video captured the moments as flames are closer and closer to homes including their home. >> we had a little fire start in the corner of the garage and we kept water on it. >> reporter: the roof of their garage caught fire as did their lawn and land surrounding it. he said he felt like they were on an island with fire on both sides of their street. >> fire resources are desperately lacking as the fire came up the canyon. >> reporter: but friends were not lacking.
