forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. that's the best way to unite our nation. >> president biden speaks to the american people from the oval office explaining his reasons for ending his re-election campaign, defending his record, and praising kamala harris. the largest fire in the country is burning in oregon as strong winds and lightning strikes spread the flames. and miracle survival. a 70-year-old man found alive after spending five days lost in the back country. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm jarred hill in for anne-marie green. we begin with president biden's primetime address to the american people. he delivered a solemn speech, his first remarks to the nation since he quit the presidential election and giving the reason why he left. during his address, biden was surrounded by family members in the oval office including the first lady as well as his son hunter.

harris spoke before members of historically black sorority zeta phi beta, an organizing block. >> these extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back. we are not going back. [ cheers ] >> reporter: according to a source familiar with the process, harris is vetting around a dozen possible running mates, including governors, members of congress, current cabinet secretaries, and some names who aren't presently in public office. that pick expected to be made public sometime before august 7th. and we also have some new details on how democrats will pick their nominee. while vice president harris has the support of thousands of delegates, no votes have been cast yet. if no one comes out to challenge her, democratic delegates will have their vote as soon as august 1st. fbi director christopher wray testified on capitol hill about the attempted assassination of donald trump. he revealed surprising new details about the gunman. the testimony comes as graphic body camera video showing the aftermath of the shooting was

released. cristian benevides has the latest. >> reporter: fbi director christopher wray said an analysis of 20-year-old thomas crooks' laptop indicates the gunman became specially interested in former president trump's july 13th rally in butler, pennsylvania, at least a week ahead of the event. >> on july 6th he did a google search for, quote, how far away was oswald from kennedy. so that's a search that obviously is significant in terms of his state of mind. >> reporter: he confirmed the fbi recovered the drone that crooks flew near the rally site. >> the shooter was flying the drone around the area, i would say about 200 yards give or take away from that, we think, but we do not know that he was live streaming, you know, viewing the footage from -- again, about 11 minutes. >> reporter: wray said agents also recovered eight cartridges from the roof of where the

gunman was perched, and crude explosive devices, two in crooks' car and one at his home. >> there were receivers for those two explosive devices with the devices, and then on the shooter himself. it looks like because of the on-off position on the receivers that if he had tried to detonate those devices from the roof, it would not have worked. >> reporter: ahead of wray's testimony, senator chuck grassley released body camera video from the immediate aftermath of the assassination attempt. it shows the secret service and local law enforcement standing over the gunman's body on the roof of the building from where shots were fired. cristian benevides, cbs news, miami. prime minister benjamin netanyahu meets with president biden at the white house today. he'll also meet with likely democratic presidential nominee vice president kamala harris. yesterday netanyahu addressed congress against a backdrop of protests.

[ chants ] >> reporter: thousands of raucous protesters converged near the capitol, some burning an american flag and an effigy of prime minister benjamin netanyahu. inside the capitol the israeli leader took them on. >> yet incredibly many anti-israel protesters, many choose to stand with evil. they stand with hamas. >> reporter: netanyahu urged the joint meeting of congress to continue backing the war and his country's efforts to free the hostages, though he's been unable to reach a cease-fire deal to bring them home. >> we're not only protecting ourselves, we're protecting you. >> reporter: netanyahu compared the october 7th attack to pearl harbor and argued enemies of america, including iran, have targeted israel with sights set on the u.s. >> our fight is your fight, and our victory will be your victory. [ cheers ] >> reporter: he defended his nation's prosecution of the war as the death toll nears 40,000.

many civilians in gaza face extreme food shortages. >> if there are palestinians in gaza not getting enough food it's not because israel is blocking, it's because hamas is stealing it. >> reporter: political tensions pulsed through the audience. michigan democrat rashida tlaib held a sign which read "war criminal." >> i will not rest -- >> reporter: dozens of congressional democrats boycotted the address. >> i think it's important not to legitimize a leader who has attacked democracy. >> reporter: as netanyahu spoke, protesters in tel aviv booed his speech as it played live on television. back at the capitol, maya roman, whose relative is being held hostage, urged netanyahu to return home and finalize a deal for the release. >> we finally have them where we want them. you have terrible terrorists finally willing to bring our loved ones back, to end this war. >> reporter: multiple reports say cease-fire negotiations are reaching their closing

stages, and that will be on the agenda when netanyahu meets with the president at the white house. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. several republican lawmakers including house speaker mike johnson banded together to replace some american flags in the capitol. new york representative brandon williams posted a video on x of him as well as some of his colleagues raising three flags outside of washington, d.c.'s, union station last night. they claim protesters burned the flags earlier in the day. red flag warnings are up in eastern oregon where firefighters are battling the largest wildfire currently burning in the u.s. thunderstorms, strong winds, and hundreds of lightning strikes rattled the oregon-idaho border fueling wildfires including the durkee fire. it's grown to more than 260,000 acres, doubling in size over the past three days. emergency crews issued a new round of evacuations. the fire is 0% contained. coming up, tragic fall. a woman dies after slipping off

"the san francisco chronicle" reports an arizona college student slipped and fell to her death while climbing yosemite national park's half dome. 20-year-old grace rohloff was hiking with her father this

month. they climbed the last 400 feet with the help of cables when a sudden storm rolled in. on the way back down, the rain made the rocks slick, and rohloff slipped down the mountain. at least six people have died from falls during wet conditions at half dome since 2006. "the new york times" says the man charged with stabbing author salman rushdie is now facing additional federal terrorism charges. hadi matar is accused of carrying out an act of terrorism and providing material support and resources to hezbollah before the stabbing according to an indictment unsealed yesterday. rushdie was stabbed ten times and blinded in one eye when he was attacked on stage during a lecture in new york state in 2020. matar pleaded not guilty to the new charges. the "associated press" is saying the death toll from an explosion at the jose cuervo tequila facility in central mexico has

this year's 48-hour race saw participants running in temperatures topping 120 degrees. organizers say nobody has died during the race, but a few pople have landed in the a 70-year-old man who went missing in the back country east of sacramento was found safe. he vanished for five days after going on a hike. about 400 people worked around the deadlock bring him home. -- the deadlock -- the clock to bring him home. here's shelby reilly of cbs sacramento with the reunion. >> reporter: 70-year-old warren elliot went missing on friday after doing group work on the rubicon trail in placer county. kevin griffiths, sergeant with the placer county sheriff's office, says he left to go on a hike as he was very familiar with the terrain. he traveled about nine miles as the crow flies before being found. >> he ended up getting turned around and went the wrong way down the creek as he thought he was heading back to camp. >> thank you. >> reporter: he survived five days on just a handful of berries and water from the rubicon river.

the terrain making it difficult to get searchers out there. >> he said during the night he was freezing. he would pull his hands inside of his shirt and just shiver all night long. >> reporter: he ended up at the hell hole reservoir and saw a fisherman out on the lake wednesday morning. >> the fisherman who was on the lake thought he heard an owl, and as he pushed farther onto the lake doing his fishing realized it was a human voice. >> that's why we do it. as volunteers, that's 100% why we take off work, we leave our family, 24/7, 365. >> reporter: sage bourassa, supervisor of search and rescue in lake tahoe, says in her 20 years of working here she has never seen a case like this. >> i was interviewing him and could not believe how alert and with it and strong he was even after just returning from that journey. >> reporter: a terrifying nightmare turning into a tale of survival for this family.
