>> it has been the privilege of my life to serve this nation for over 50 years. >> from the oval office president biden explained his decision to leave the race calling it the best way to unite his party and the nation. >> nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy. that includes personal ambition. so i've decided the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. >> the president's supporters gathered outside the white house to listen to the speech. some shedding tears. >> a grateful heart for the president, for his service to our country. >> reporter: former president trump watched the historic address while leading his rally in north carolina. there trump focused his attacks on new likely democratic nominee vice president kamala harris. frequently mispronouncing her name. >> lyin' kamala harris has been the ultra-liberal driving force behind every single biden catastrophe. >> reporter: earlier in indiana,

harris spoke before members of historically black sorority zeta phi beta, an organizing block. >> these extremists want to take us back, but we are not going back. we are not going back. [ cheers ] >> reporter: according to a source familiar with the process, harris is vetting around a dozen possible running mates, including governors, members of congress, current cabinet secretaries, and some names who aren't presently in public office. that pick expected to be made public sometime before august 7th. and we also have some new details on how democrats will pick their nominee. while vice president harris has the support of thousands of delegates, no votes have been cast yet. if no one comes out to challenge her, democratic delegates will have their vote as soon as august 1st. fbi director christopher wray testified on capitol hill about the attempted assassination of donald trump. he revealed surprising new details about the gunman. the testimony comes as graphic body camera video showing the aftermath of the shooting was

released. cristian benevides has the latest. >> reporter: fbi director christopher wray said an analysis of 20-year-old thomas crooks' laptop indicates the gunman became specially interested in former president trump's july 13th rally in butler, pennsylvania, at least a week ahead of the event. >> on july 6th he did a google search for, quote, how far away was oswald from kennedy. so that's a search that obviously is significant in terms of his state of mind. >> reporter: he confirmed the fbi recovered the drone that crooks flew near the rally site. >> the shooter was flying the drone around the area, i would say about 200 yards give or take away from that, we think, but we do not know that he was live streaming, you know, viewing the footage from -- again, about 11 minutes. >> reporter: wray said agents also recovered eight cartridges from the roof of where the

gunman was perched, and crude explosive devices, two in crooks' car and one at his home. >> there were receivers for those two explosive devices with the devices, and then on the shooter himself. it looks like because of the on-off position on the receivers that if he had tried to detonate those devices from the roof, it would not have worked. >> reporter: ahead of wray's testimony, senator chuck grassley released body camera video from the immediate aftermath of the assassination attempt. it shows the secret service and local law enforcement standing over the gunman's body on the roof of the building from where shots were fired. cristian benevides, cbs news, miami. prime minister benjamin netanyahu meets with president biden at the white house today. he'll also meet with likely democratic presidential nominee vice president kamala harris. yesterday netanyahu addressed congress against a backdrop of protests.

"the new york times" says the man charged with stabbing author salman rushdie is now facing additional federal terrorism charges. hadi matar is accused of carrying out an act of terrorism and providing material support and resources to hezbollah before the stabbing according to an indictment unsealed yesterday. rushdie was stabbed ten times and blinded in one eye when he was attacked on stage during a lecture in new york state in 2020. matar pleaded not guilty to the new charges. the "associated press" is saying the death toll from an explosion at the jose cuervo tequila facility in central mexico has

this year's 48-hour race saw participants running in temperatures topping 120 degrees. organizers say nobody has died during the race, but a few pople have landed in the a 70-year-old man who went missing in the back country east of sacramento was found safe. he vanished for five days after going on a hike. about 400 people worked around the deadlock bring him home. -- the deadlock -- the clock to bring him home. here's shelby reilly of cbs sacramento with the reunion. >> reporter: 70-year-old warren elliot went missing on friday after doing group work on the rubicon trail in placer county. kevin griffiths, sergeant with the placer county sheriff's office, says he left to go on a hike as he was very familiar with the terrain. he traveled about nine miles as the crow flies before being found. >> he ended up getting turned around and went the wrong way down the creek as he thought he was heading back to camp. >> thank you. >> reporter: he survived five days on just a handful of berries and water from the rubicon river.

the terrain making it difficult to get searchers out there. >> he said during the night he was freezing. he would pull his hands inside of his shirt and just shiver all night long. >> reporter: he ended up at the hell hole reservoir and saw a fisherman out on the lake wednesday morning. >> the fisherman who was on the lake thought he heard an owl, and as he pushed farther onto the lake doing his fishing realized it was a human voice. >> that's why we do it. as volunteers, that's 100% why we take off work, we leave our family, 24/7, 365. >> reporter: sage bourassa, supervisor of search and rescue in lake tahoe, says in her 20 years of working here she has never seen a case like this. >> i was interviewing him and could not believe how alert and with it and strong he was even after just returning from that journey. >> reporter: a terrifying nightmare turning into a tale of survival for this family.
