with momentum on her side, likely democratic presidential nominee kamala harris is collecting endorsements with the backing of a former president expected soon. and donald trump focusing his attacks. what he's now saying about a face-to-face debate. drug kingpins in custody. two top mexican cartel leaders including the son of el chapo are arrested by u.s. authorities. and bears in a car? you won't believe what they did to the inside. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. likely democratic presidential nominee kamala harris has a lot of campaigning to fit in before the upcoming november election. this morning "the new york times" reports that harris is making plans to name a running mate by august 7th. this as a big endorsement from a former president is said to be coming soon. jarred hill is here in new york with more. good morning.

>> reporter: hey, several members of the obama world have been involved in the early days of harris' campaign including his attorney general, eric holder, handling the vp vetting process. all that was missing was the endorsement of former president obama himself. cbs news has learned former president barack obama is planning on backing vice president kamala harris, quote, soon, according to a source who sas obama has been in constant contact with harris. >> i am running to become president of the united states. [ cheers ] >> reporter: thursday the vice president accepted the endorsement of the nation's largest teachers union. also yesterday her first face to face with a world leader since entering the presidential race less than a week ago. pressing israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu for a gaza deal. >> israel has a right to defend itself and how it does so matters. >> reporter: former president donald trump says he'll meet with netanyahu in mar-a-lago later today. as trump adjusts his focus from biden to harris, national polls

show the two already running neck and neck just day into her candidacy. >> she's bad news. she's a radical. >> reporter: harris says she's ready to debate trump. >> i think the voters deserve to see the split screen that exists in this race. >> reporter: earlier this week trump suggested he was open to more than one debate with harris. months ago he said he'd debate biden any time, any place. but last night the trump campaign released a statement saying it could be inappropriate to finalize a debate before the democrats formally decide their nominee. harris tweeted, quote, what happened to any time, any place? and former president trump's running mate, senator j.d. vance, is facing growing scrutiny for suggesting three years ago that people without children should not be in positions of power. arizona senator mark kelly, whose name has been floated as a possible vp pick, called it obnoxious, rude, quote, and not surprising. back to you. >> thank you. new video shows law

enforcement's response to the rooftop where a gunman fired at donald trump during a rally in butler, pennsylvania. as cbs' scott macfarlane reports, trump's doctor is defending his assessment that the former president was, in fact, hit in the ear by a bullet. >> reporter: newly released police video shows a local pennsylvania s.w.a.t. team trying to find a way to the roof used by the gunman who tried to kill former president donald trump. >> there's a lot here -- >> reporter: seeking a ladder, then climbing. one responder is heard noting -- >> on the roof outside of the fence -- >> reporter: finding the trail of shell casings. >> one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight -- at least eight. >> reporter: and the ar-style rifle near the shooter's body, then a suspected detonator. >> this is a remote device. it is gray in color. >> reporter: republican dan meuser who was near trump during the rally wants more answers about the response. >> i don't think there was a

high sense of seriousness and urgency, frankly. >> reporter: meanwhile, a day after fbi director christopher wray raised questions about whether trump was actually hit by a bullet -- >> there's some question about whether or not it's a bullet or shrapnel to hit his ear. >> reporter: democrats pounced. >> if he's lying about whether he was actually shot, that's something the american people should know. >> reporter: the only medical statement released about trump's injury wasn't from the hospital that treated him but by his political ally and former white house doctor, ronny jackson, who today defended his argument it was a bullet. >> if it wasn't a bullet wound, i ask you what was it, right? piece of glass? where did the glass come from? i'm told the teleprompters are intact. >> reporter: the fbi called for his resignation after he raised that question about the bullet. the fbi said it is devoting enormous resources to learning everything possible about the shooter. scott macfarlane, cbs news, the capitol. prosecutors in donald trump's hush-money case say his

felony victory must stand despite the ruling that presidents cannot face criminal charges over official acts. in a court filing made public yesterday, new york city prosecutors are urging a judge to reject the former president's bid to toss out the verdict. they said the supreme court's decision has no bearing on their case because it involves, quote, unofficial acts. trump was convicted of falsifying business records to cover up a payment to adult film actor stormy daniels over an alleged sexual encounter. the justice department announced the arrests of two leaders of one of the most toufl -- drug organizations in the world. ismael "el mayo" zambada, a longtime leader of the sinaloa cartel, and joaquin guzman lopez, son of drug lord enchapo, were both taken into custody in el paso, texas, yesterday. a mexican official said the two arrived in the u.s. on a private

plane and then turned themselves in. the u.s. had been offering up to $15 million for information leading to the arrest and capture of zambada. california's largest wildfire this year has now almost doubled in size. the park fire north of sacramento has burned more than 145,000 acres and is only 3% contained. a suspected arsonist has been arrested, and officials have identified him as ronnie dean stout of chico. cbs' jonathan vigliotti has more. >> reporter: in northern california, this wildfire pushed by powerful winds ripped through a community near the city of chico as thousands evacuated. the fire engulfed everything in its path. leaving a trial of devastation. julia yarborough watched her house burn on her home security camera. we were with her as she returned for the first time. >> you know, we're just -- we're

"the san francisco chronicle" reports california governor gavin newsom has now ordered state agencies to remove homeless encampments. there are thousands of tents and makeshift shelters across california along freeways and in

parking lots and parks. the state is home to about a third of the nation's homeless population. newsom also urged cities, counties, and local officials to do the same, but they're not legally bound to do so. "newsweek" says two nasa astronaut face an indefinite stay on the international space station because of ongoing problems with boeing's "starliner" capsule. butch wilmore and suni williams arrived last month on board the first test flight with a crew. they were supposed to be there for about a week, but they haven't been able to return home because of technical problems with the "starliner." yesterday officials said there was still no return date as engineers try and fix things. yesterday officials said there was still no return date as engineers try and fix things. and the "los angeles times" says a record 17 california condor chicks are thriving at the l.a. zoo. the chicks have all hatched at the zoo during this year's breeding season for the

checking our cbs cbs "moneywatch" this morning, a mixed close on wall street yesterday as investors await last month's spending report. the dow gained 81 points, the nasdaq was down 160, and the s&p 500 lost 27 points. a major shakeup at southwest airlines. the company announced it will soon start selling assigned seats. it's a big break from the airline's 50-year tradition of open boarding. southwest plans to begin selling tickets with assigned seats next year. a big legal victory for ride-share companies in california. the state supreme court ruled app-based ride hailing and delivery services like uber and lyft can continue treating drivers as independent contractors. this means they're not entitled to overtime pay, paid sick leave, and unemployment insurance. labor unions vow to continue fighting. and more than 500 employees behind one of the most popular

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ comic-con, the event celebrating comic books and pop culture, is under way in san diego. the convention which draws more than 130,000 fans a year opened at the san diego convention center yesterday and runs through sunday. the event is expected to be back to normal for the first time since 2019 after covid and hollywood strikes disrupted or canceled past conventions. the youth vote is suddenly being energized across the u.s. this thanks to a new frontrunner at the top of the democratic ticket and a 39-year-old picked to be the republican vice presidential nominee. jo ling kent has more. ♪
