out. >> a lot of people do not know the status of their home. and the hundreds of farmworkers who kept going through fires and dry out taking to the streets of the north bay demanding better pay. and later five years after the garlic festival shooting shattered gilroy locals are determined to bring it back. we are live at the cbs studios on battery a broadway tonight it we begin with a man accused of starting the largest active wildfire in the country. ronnie stout will appear in state court tomorrow accused of starting the fast spreading park fire near chico. more than 360,000 acres have gone up in smoke. containment at full percent tonight. governor newsom visited cal fire's command post yesterday where he made the announcement that economic help is on the way from the feds. in the meantime, 3000 crewmen are fighting the fire . it has destroyed more

than 60 buildings and evacuation orders remain in effect . jonathan vigliotti is in chico with the latest. >> reporter: northern california's park fire, the country's largest wildfire has erupted in size to nearly 550 square miles. the flames forcing thousands of people in four counties to leave their homes. >> it is burning on both sides for 10 miles. >> reporter: fire has destroyed at least 66 structures with about 4200 homes threatened. cooler temperatures are helping exhaust -- the worst of the flames have been extinguished but you have a slow-moving fire . about 1600 firefighters responded to seems just like this. this home would be a loss without them. crews are also struggling to control the borough fire about 100 miles

of the creek fire in signal . containment under 30% and evacuation orders remain in place . aaron peck joins us now with how the terrain is making it a tough firefight there. >> reporter: from that dc-10 flyover, that was two days ago when they were throwing everything they had at the fire, but that dc-10 was not far from mission peak and this is a part of the bay area lots of people know. thankfully they stop forward progression on the fire but look at the terrain down there. you take calaveras road from pleasant teen and get into some very complicated terrain. the wind is not that bad, humidity is high. we have a locator on there. the main issue is the terrain. so gorgeous to hike in. a major factor in why they have a slower time getting it contained. let's go to the other fire for a moment. this is a satellite imagery looking north. let's get ourselves

oriented. there's the park fire north of chico and if we get a close-up look into the infrared imagery showing you are the front line to that fire is and you can see all the smoke. let's come back home now. that's the view over the santa clara valley today and that is smoke. last the time lapse as we get the wide view in of the window. as the sun went down he really see the smoke hanging out and that is coming all the way from the park fire. good news, most elevated and over the next day a lot will be pushed away. i will be back with the rest of our forecast coming up. for now, brian, back to you. that the sound of hundreds of farmworkers marching in healdsburg today for higher wages and disaster pay. they say they have not only worked through heat waves but they also had hours cut. kevin coast spoke with workers who warn about what might be coming next.

>> reporter: we were here in sonoma county last month when the point fire destroyed buildings and forced county officials to declare a state of emergency, but workers in nearby farms and vineyards say they never stop attending the fields. highlighting the disparities they say continue to face . [ speaking in a global language ] is sedro rodriguez is a farmworker in sonoma county and he says he is struggling to afford rent and groceries while working in wine country. >> translator: we are taking care of these vines for the wine and this industry is very rich and they are not paying us what we deserve and if we were not taking care of these plants, none of this would exist.

>> reporter: this march temporarily shut down streets and the healdsburg memorial bridge . speaking at the marsh was daughter of south american immigrants, laura aguilar. >> it is bringing that awareness to the consumers that are here as you can see they are all around us and they are spending so much money here on their vacations and they need to be able to see that the workers are the ones doing the work. >> reporter: workers are demanding 25 dollars per hour or 250 dollars per ton of grapes picked. >> when there is extreme heat or smoke we are out there as farmworkers. >> reporter: sonoma county vineyard workers have picketed in recent months, but sunday comes with a different tone. they say hundreds of farmworkers are prepared to strike. and they would put the

immediate future of wine country up in the air. >> all the people you saw her today will back workers up when they go on strike. >> we will not stop until we win disaster pay and dignified wages. we plan these plants and take care of them and make it possible for them to have their wine . >> reporter: farmworkers are also demanding hazard pay which with additional wages when they work during dangerous conditions or compensation for when they are told it's too dangerous to work altogether which results in fewer hours and lower pay. out of the south bay where exactly 5 years ago the gilroy garlic festival came to a stunning and when a gunman began firing into the crowd. many thought the festival then ended for good. but did it ? john ramose has new developments. >> reporter: they say it's harder to build something than to tear it down and it took 30 years for the gilroy garlic festival to put this town on the map and only if you seconds

for a lone gunman to take it all away. there was a crowd at christmas hill park in gilroy, but they came for the soccer, not for the garlic. this would normally be the weekend for the garlic festival but it all came crashing down when a lone gunman began shooting into the crowd exactly 5 years ago to the day. >> we have an active shooter of the garlic festival. >> reporter: the sheer randomness was shocking and although police killed the shooter within one minute three people died and 11 others were wounded. in the years since the community has suffered with the loss of the festival. >> i think all entities have struggled. school programs have struggled and different organizations can't get back. just the economic development of our town. hotels and restaurants, everything has been affected by not having a festival. >> on of those restaurants is

the garlic city cafe. >> that's the whole point, bringing people to gilroy. that way people know where gilroy is and not just a little tiny town in a hole. kind of like my cafe. it's a little place in a wall, no one can see it, but people still come down. >> reporter: some shooting victims have sued the city and they insurance pool insisting that liability coverage for the festival almost doubled from six to 10 million dollars costing hundreds of thousands more. >> it really impacted insurance companies especially with the added coverage they want. excess amount that was required, so that was very difficult to get and being that we were in an active lawsuit we couldn't even get it to begin with. >> things are looking up. in november the judge dismissed the lawsuit thing the shooting was not a reasonably

foreseeable risk and that the association says they are working to bring down the amount of insurance . >> we want the festival back. >> we have that vision of seeing it happen again so that's what's motivating us. it's going to happen. >> i agree. >> maybe next year ? >> reporter: may be. >> and that would mean a lot at the garlic city cafe. >> that would be something really big. they should bring it back. >> reporter: gilroy may be the garlic capital of the world but that the festival to let the world know about it. by the way organizer say if the festival does come back it will probably start out smaller they had been in recent years. toward the and it had attracted more than 100,000 visitors over the three day run. still to come tonight at 11:00 a whole new race for the

a pretty good turnout the san francisco athletic club to watch the u.s. women's soccer team take on germany. this is just one of several watch parties that afc hosted tonight. stanford's own sophia smith scored two goals in team usa's 4-1 win. the next matches wednesday morning against australia in the final game of the group stage. and as the olympics play out in paris the smithsonian art museum opened a new exhibition paying tribute to this historic olympic moment. the exhibit titled bridge consist of 200 caths of tommy smith's arm stretching 100 feet over the main gallery of the museum. it memorializes u.s. runners tommy smith and john carlos raising their fists as a symbol of black power at the 1968 games in mexico city. this happened after winning the golden bronze matters -- metals.
