firefighters in northern california race to contain the park fire. the flames forcing thousands of people from their homes. the new challenge crews are up against. breaking overnight, showdown in venezuela. nicolas maduro, the country's authoritarian leader, has been declared the winner of the presidential election. what opposition leaders are now saying. and highlights from the olympic games in paris. see who's already making team usa history. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. this morning firefighters in northern california are facing new challenges as they race to extinguish flames from the park fire, now the seventh largest in the state's history. they say spot fires have picked up along highway 32 near chico where crews are encountering steep terrain. the blaze has burned more than 360,000 acres and is only is 12% contained. jonathan vigliotti spoke to people who have been forced to evacuate their homes.

rip northern california's park fire, the country's largest wildfire, has erupted in size to nearly 550 square miles. the intense flames forcing thousands of people in four counties to leave their homes. >> it is burning on both sides for ten miles. it was driving through an inferno. >> reporter: the fire has destroyed at least 66 structures, with about 4,200 homes threatened. cooler temperatures are helping exhausted crews. the worst of the flames have been extinguished, but you have this slow, creeping fire moving in on neighborhoods. about 1,600 firefighters on the ground responding to scenes just like this. this home would be a total loss without them. crews are also struggling to control the boral fire burning 100 miles north of los angeles. the flames nearly destroyed the tiny gold mining town of havilah. this year's fire season has been explosive. the number of acres burned in california through july has

grown by more than 2,000% compared to this time last year. in oregon, more than a million acres are burning. smoke from oregon and california wildfires have spread to multiple states including idaho, montana, and north dakota. many in the path of the park fire are now facing devastation. >> people that we know that are -- stuff is all burned up. >> reporter: jonathan vigliotti, cbs news, chico, california. and breaking overnight, venezuela's tumultuous presidential election has come to an end with authoritarian leader president nicolas maduro being declared the winner. the opposition is claiming victory themselves saying the margin was overwhelming. fights broke out at polling station. voters came from as far away as london to cast their ballots following 25 years of socialist rules that many say has crippled the country. >> this is the first time that in venezuela we have a chance to

really make a huge, huge difference. our contribution with our vote for the freedom of venezuela. >> secretary of state antony blinken said the u.s. has serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the venezuelan people. and here at home, the war of words is escalating between former president trump and vice president kamala harris. they were both on the campaign trail this weekend trying to win over undecided voters with just 99 days to go until the election. jarred hill is tracking the latest for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. democrats are riding high on enthusiasm since harris entered the race just about a week ago. while her star is rising, republicans are remaining unified around former president trump as his attacks on his likely presidential rival have become more personal. vice president kamala harris and former president donald trump hit the campaign trail over the weekend with just over three months to election day. >> we are going to win --

>> they're going to be crushed if you don't elect me. >> reporter: it comes as a new poll shows harris has a higher favorability among voters than trump barely a week after entering the race. trump stepped up his attacks on harris at campaign events in florida. >> she was a bum three weeks ago. >> reporter: and minnesota -- >> kamala harris' deadly destruction of america's borders is completely and totally disqualifying for her to be president. she's evil. in. >> reporter: prompting this response -- >> donald trump has been reporting lies about my record and some of what he and his running mates are saying -- just plain weird. [ laughter ] >> reporter: some of harris' possible vp picks came to her defense. >> he wants to see a bum, he ought it look in the mirror. >> reporter: the harris campaign released a statement saying "democracy is under assault," after trump said this saturday -- >> christians get out and vote! just this time. you won't have to do it any more, four more years, you know

what, it will be fixed. >> reporter: republicans scrambled to explain -- >> i think he's obviously making a joke about how bad things have been under joe biden. >> reporter: some calling it hyperbole. this week trump's campaign heads back to pennsylvania for the first time since that assassination attempt. meanwhile, harris is taking a tour of the south stopping in georgia and texas. back to you. >> all right. jarred hill, thank you so much. ahead on "cbs mornings," co-chair of the harris campaign, michigan governor gretchen whitmer, is going to be joining us. we're going to talk about the presidential race and harris' search for a running mate. meantime, president biden is set to unveil proposals to reform the supreme court during a speech today in austin, texas. we are told that he's likely going to endorse establishing term limits for justices and an enforceable code of ethics. the action comes as biden has grown increasingly critical of the supreme court decision, including rulings by the conservative majority that eliminated federal abortion rights.

in the middle east now, there are growing fears of a wider war after israel launched retaliatory strikes killing two people inside lebanon. israeli authorities say they targeted hezbollah after it claims the militant group killed 12 teenagers and children when it fired a rocket from lebanon that hit a soccer field in the israeli-controlled golan heights. debora patta reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: the funeral echoed across the area, thousands garnered around the long row of white shrouded coffins. those killed were all children, some still wearing their sports gear, when they were blown apart by a hezbollah rocket. the kids were playing just behind me when the sirens went off. then the rocket slammed into the pitch leaving no time for them to make it to the shelter. this man knew every one of the victims. >> all of them were like my

"the new york times" says a california highway is back open after a lithium battery fire trapped drivers. all northbound lanes on the 15 freeway connected california to las vegas reopened yesterday morning after a truck hauling lithium-ion batteries overturned and then caught fire on friday. it caused a miles long traffic backup, stranding drivers in triple-digit heat with some calling 911 due to heat-related emergencies. the fire prompted both sides of the freeway to be shut down while crews worked to contain the flames and remove the 75,000-pound container. "usa today" reports vigils took place across the nation to honor sonya massey as calls for justice grow. this was the scene in new york city's washington square park yesterday. the crowd chanted sonya massey's name. a black woman who was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy in her illinois home after she called 911 earlier this month. a rally was also held in st.

louis yesterday. on saturday demonstrations were held in hollywood, california, and in chicago where people demanded justice for the 36-year-old. body camera footage reveals -- >> yet again demanding justice for another black woman who was murdered by the police. sonya massey called the police to deal with a potential intruder, and the irony -- she was safer with the potential intruder than the police. >> body camera footage reveals the moment sean grayson shot the mother of two after asking her to check the stove. the former illinois sheriff's deputy was fired nearly two weeks after the shooting and is facing murder charges. and the "new york post" says a tropical disturbance over the atlantic is worrying hurricane experts. the national hurricane center is watching a tropical disturbance that is currently located east of a group of islands in the caribbean sea. they say environmental conditions are increasing the chances of the system developing into a tropical depression around midweek. the latest outlooks project the system will head in the general
