director to face a grilling on capitol hill over the security failure surrounding the assassination attempt against donald trump as we get new details about the shooter and shifting timeline. narrowing the field. one key veep stakes contender takes himself out of the running to be kamala harris's running mate. >> and the drought is over. the u.s. men's gymnastics team takes home its first olympic team medal in 16 years. well, good morning and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the investigation into the assassination attempt on former president donald trump. the secret service's acting director will face some tough questions from the senate committee today, and according to excerpts of his testimony obtained by cbs news, he's expected to tell lawmakers he cannot defend why the roof where the gunman opened fire was not secured. cbs's leah mishkin joins us now

from london with the details. leah, good morning. >> good morning, anne-marie. that was the big question that everyone was asking. how did the shooter get so close to such a high-profile event. there were eyewitnesses who saw the gunman and pointed him out to law enforce management and we learn now they started texting about the gunman nearly an hour. and a half before the first shot was fired. barely a week into the job, ronald rowe will take the hot seat on capitol hill hill. rowe will say he visited the site of the assassination attempt on former president donald trump, and, quote, what i saw made me ashamed. he's also consecutived to say his agency ensured every event site security plan is authorrily vetted by multiple security supervisors before it's implemented. this comes as newly released police text messages show

officers were aware of the gunman, thomas crooks, at least 105 minutes before he opened fire. that's more than 30 minutes earlier than previously reported. >> there were multiple opportunities for this individual to be encountered by law enforcement. >> reporter: at 4:27 p.m. one colleague texted others the shooter is up there. in a different group chat an officer sent a picture of crooks and says i did see him with a range finder looking toward the stage. that officer spoke to abc news yesterday. >> i assumed that there would be somebody coming out to speak with this individual. >> reporter: but 33 minutes later, the shooter still had a clear line at the stage when he shot at trump. the local s.w.a.t. team said they never spoke to secret service until after the assassination attempt. >> there should have been communication with the local police, which there wasn't, so that's a bad thing.

>> reporter: a local fbi agent spoke and the former president trump says the fbi interview will take place on thursday. the director of the secret service admitted it was a significant operational failure and she ended up resigning. remember, the gunman not only shot at the former president but killed one rally attendee and injured two others before he was killed by a united states secret service sniper. anne-marie? >> those are stunning details. leah mishkin in london, thank you so much. >> thank you. vice president kamala harris returns to the campaign trail in the battleground state of georgia today. one contender is taking himself out of the running. north carolina governor roy cooper is pulling himself out of consideration. a source said that cooper was concerned that his republican lieutenant governor would behave like a, quote, acting governor when he left the state to campaign as part of the democratic ticket. cbs's weijia jiang reports from the white house. >> reporter: just 99 days before the election -- >> she will be worse than

crooked joe biden. >> reporter: -- the race is tightening, and vice president harris is trying to sustain her strong start. >> people have been flooding our offices around the country to volunteer. we've got momentum on our side. >> reporter: harris raised more than $200 million in her first full week on the trail, two-thirds of it from first-time donors. the campaign signed up 170,000 new volunteers, and a new poll shows her favorability rating jumped to 43% from a week ago while on the republican side, jd vance's unfavorable rating increased to 39% due in part to these comments that went viral. >> we're effectively run in this country by a bunch of childless cat ladies who are miserable in their own lives. >> reporter: demg carats pounce with a new line of attack. >> that stuff is weird. they come across as weird.

whitmer told cbs news kamala harris will choose a running mate in the next six, seven days. that's right before the deadline when they want to formally nominate a vice presidential candidate. raging wildfires continue to blaze a path of destruction across the west. the park fire in northern california is the largest active wildfire burning in the u.s. the man suspected of starting it made his first court appearance. jonathan vigliotti tells us the fire is still growing. >> reporter: as fast-moving flames ravage parts of southern california, firefighters are urged to stay aggressive. more than 4,800 of them are battling the sixth largest state wildfire ever recorded. crews are scrambling to put out hot spots. but an abundance of grass, timber, and dry brush is fueling the fire at a feverish pace. >> it's been primed to go over the last number of years. obviously with the temperatures and winds, everything is

aligning perfectly for this blaze to be burning four to five meyers an hour. >> reporter: ronnie stout faces arraignment. prosecutors say the suspect pushed a burning car into the side. o one witness told us what she saw. >> it spread fast. >> reporter: in current county, 130 miles north of los angeles, another wildfire exploded, destroying most of a mining town over the weekend. meanwhile in canada we're getting look at a devastation that struck a popular tourist destination in jasper and its national park. 358 buildings were burned, a third of the entire town. and smoke from canada and here in the western united states has now drifted as far as the east coast. jonathan vigliotti, cbs news. well, venezuela is a country in turmoil this morning after president nicolas maduro claimed

victory in the disputed presidential election. thousands of people took to the streets yesterday to protest what they say is an attempt by maduro to steal the election. some of the demonstrations turned violent, and at least two people were killed. the opposition says that it has evidence to prove it won sunday's election overwhelmingly despite maduro saying that he was elected to a third term. independent exit polls point to a landslide win for the on opposition. several countries including the u.s. are questioning the results. >> increased fears are of a growing war at israel's northern border. israel is warning iranian-backed hezbollah will pay a heavy price or a rocket attack that killed 12 israeli jewish children over the weekend. debora patta reports from east jerusalem. >> reporter: blown apart by a hezbollah rocket, 12 children laid to rest in a long row of white shrouded coffins.

the coast guard rescued two boaters stranded near horn island, mississippi. authorities say the two men had become separated from their 14-foot aluminum boat which the coast found adrift. they were rescued and brought back to gulfport-biloxi international airport. a judge issues a key ruling about the national rifle association. and a deadly attack on children at a dance studio. two children were killed and nine others injured at a taylor swift-themed dance class in

england. it happened yesterday in the seaside town of south port in liverpool. a 17-year-old boy was arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. police say two adults trying to protect the children were also wounded. there's no word on a motive, but authorities do not believe it was terror-related. u.s. "usa today" says the illinois deputy who is charged with killing sonya mass is has declined to resign. she called 911 to report a possible prowler. grayson reported to the scene. the sheriff county sheriff asked for forgiveness in front of 300 people at a town hall last night. he worked for five law enforcement agencies in less than three years. and "the new york times" reports a judge declined to appoint a outside financer to

people ran for cover. mcdonald's slumping sales and airlines went around the against the federal government. here's shanelle kaul with today's "moneywatch." >> no huge changes in the u.s. stockmarket monday as investors now look ahead to a federal reserve decision, a jobs report, and big tech earnings coming this week. the dow lost 49 points, the nasdaq gained 12 points, and the s&p 500 gained 4 points. a major victory for the airline industry. a u.s. appeals court has blocked the transportation department's new rule requiring airlines to disclose all fees up front. the agency had said the new policies would help consumers. in its decision the appeals court said the rules likely exceed the department's authority and will irreparably harm airlines. it is pending a full review. for the first time in four years, mcdonald's same-store sales fell as cash-strapped
