and he was shocked by what he was hearing. look, there was controversy surrounding this event before it even started. the nabj was getting backlash for inviting trump to spoke. -- to speak. the co-chair of the convention stepped down, and nabj's president reiterated the appearance was not an endorsement and was an opportunities for political journalists to ask the former president questions on key issues facing the black community, and that's exactly what happened. last night former president donald trump returned to pennsylvania nearly three weeks after surviving an assassination attempt in the battleground state. >> i shouldn't be with you. but i am. >> reporter: hours earlier in chicago, trump sparked controversy at the national association of black journalists convention when he questioned vice president kamala harris' racial identity. >> she was only promoting indian heritage. i didn't know she was black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. now she wants to be known as black. so i don't know. is she indian or black? >> reporter: harris is the daughter of a jamaican father and indian mother.

she attended the historically black howard university and is a member of the nation's oldest black sorority, alpha kappa alpha. harris responded to trump's attack at the gathering of another historically black sorority in houston. >> well it was the same old show. the divisiveness and the disrespect. the american people deserve better. >> reporter: trump's comments also drew swift rebuke from the white house. >> it's insulting. >> reporter: trump's running mate j.d. vance defended him while rallying in arizona. >> he's running to be president for all americans. he's already got record support from black voters, hispanic voters, union workers, and many other americans who have been lied to and betrayed by kamala harris and the fake news media. >> reporter: today vance will tour the southern border, harris will speak at the funeral of texas congresswoman sheila jackson lee. starting today democratic delegates begin their roll call vote to select the presidential

nominee. vice president kamala harris is running unopposed and has already been endorsed by more than 3,000 of nearly 4,000 pledged delegates. voting ends monday, august 5th, the same day harris is expected to announce her running mate. michael? >> and we will be watching. thanks. >> reporter: thank you. nearly 23 years after the september 11th attacks, three of the five defendants including the alleged mastermind have reached a plea deal. according to the defense department, the accused plot leader, khalid sheikh, and two suspected accomplices have agreed to plead guilty to all charges including the murder of 2,976 people in exchange for a life sentence. the pretrial agreement reached after 27 months of negotiations takes the death penalty off the table. they've been in u.s. custody for 21 years, most of that time at guantanamo bay. the middle east and the world are on edge following the assassination of a senior hamas

leader inside iran, sparking fears the conflict in gaza is spreading into a wider regional war. iran's supreme leader ayatollah ali khamenei led funeral prayers today for ismail hayiyeh in tehran. he also vowed to take revenge for the killing which came hours after an israeli air strike killed a top hezbollah commander in lebanon. debora patta is in east jerusalem with more on the escalating tensions. >> reporter: these are the last images of ismail haniyeh alive attending the iranian president's inauguration. since the october 7th attack, he's had a target on his back. israel warned hamas leaders were marked for death. haniyeh was killed in a brazen strike in tehran where people protested the assassination. hamas is blaming israel, claiming a missile struck the house he was staying in.

the death came hours after israel announced it had killed hezbollah commander fuad shakur in beirut now also confirmed by hezbollah. prime minister benjamin netanyahu made no mention of the attack in tehran. "we are prepared for any scenario," he said, "we will exact a very heavy price for any aggression." in the israeli-occupied west bank, the assassination was met with shock and disbelief. people have been chanting "west bank for hamas." they want revenge. their grief shared with palestinians in gaza. "i've been crying all day," said fatima, "we've lost one of our very own." haniyeh was the political face of hamas. he was the man who sat in the same room as the israelis trying to hammer out that much-depended

-- much-demanded hostage deal. palestinian activists believe that deal is now dead. >> when you kill the person you negotiate with, what is the intention? the intention is to kill any possibility for peace. >> reporter: debora patta, cbs news, east jerusalem. new video appears to show donald trump's would-be assassin moments before he opened fire. a person believed to be the gunman can be seen moving across a rooftop about 400 feet from where trump was speaking at a rally in butler, pennsylvania. the individual then pops up on the roof again before shots were fired. the video was shot by one of the injured men. harrowing newly released recordings in the deadly police shooting of sonya massey. she's the illinois woman killed by a sheriff's deputy last month after calling for help about a possible prowler at her home. the recordings obtained by cbs news include a 911 call from massey's mother pleading for

noncombative officers to be sent to her daughter's home. cbs' charlie demar has the details, and we want to warn you some may find the video disturbing. s sgr. >> i heard somebody outside. >> reporter: 911 calls and dispatch audio are giving the fullest look yet at what happened to sonya massey on july 5th and 6th. record show she was experiencing a prolonged mental health episode. her mother, donna, called for help. >> people tell me to call 911. >> reporter: that was at 9:09 a.m., 16 hours before she was shot. >> please don't send no combative policemen that are prejudiced. please. i'm scared of the police. sometimes they make things worse. >> reporter: then massey herself called 911 just before 1:00 p.m. and called again early the next morning after she heard what she thought was a prowler outside her home. >> i keep hearing stuff on the outside of my house. and it sounds like somebody was

banging on the side of my house. i don't know -- could you all come and see? >> reporter: officer sean grayson and his partner were dispatched. the encounter with police escalated quickly. >> okay -- >> drop the [ beep ]-- [ bleep ] [ bleep ] >> reporter: body cam video captured officer sean grayson shooting massey in her kitchen. >> a female, i shot a female. >> 1078, shots fired. >> reporter: later dispatchers were told massey died in a self-inflicted gunshot wound. >> they're saying self-inflicted. >> reporter: the family accuses the department of trying to cover up her cause of death by claiming it was a self-inflicted gunshot. >> he needs to go to jail for life. i don't want to see him in public ever again honestly. >> reporter: the sangaman county sheriff's office says that former deputy sean grayson admits to shooting at least twice on body cam video and there was never any confusion over how sonya massey died. the department also denying these claims of a cover-up.

>> reporter: bentley's parents say will b forever grateful to the first responders and police officers for rescuing their son. multiple arrests during a sex trafficking sting at comic-con, and wildfires continue to burn out west. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the denver post" reports major wildfires are burning across colorado. the body of one person was found in one of at least five homes that were destroyed. the fires are being fueled by high heat and dry conditions. thousands of people have been forced from their homes. the governor called up the colorado national guard to help fight the fires in dangerous terrain. nearly 100 wildfires are burning cross the west. the "associated press" says the captain of a scuba dive boat that caught fire in 2019 was ordered to pay about $32,000 to the families of three of the 34 people killed. a federal judge ordered jerry boylan to pay the restitution nearly five years after the deadly fire off the central

the federal reserve is keeping its key interest rate unchanged at least for now. the fed chair jerome powell said the time is drawing near for the central bank to trim borrowing costs. he signaled it could happen as soon as the fed's next policy meeting in september if inflation continues to cool. delta airlines says the crowdstrike outage cost the airline $500 million over five days. delta's ceo said the airline is now preparing for litigation as it tries to recover. the outage hit delta airlines harder than most of the other airlines. delta was forced to cancel more than 5,000 flights, leaving thousands of passengers stranded. and two more restaurant chains are jumping into the value meal war. ihop is now offering up all-you-can-eat pancakes for $5 while denny's is offering value meals from $2 to $8. they're joining other big franchises like mcdonald's, taco
