it's friday, august 2nd, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." breaking overnight -- [ applause ] -- welcome home. three americans freed from russian prisons are back on u.s. soil, part of the biggest prisoner exchange since the cold war.

good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. there were tears, hugs, and a big celebration as three freed americans landed at a military base just out the nation's capital overnight. part of a complex prisoner swap with russia that involved 24 people and seven countries. "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich swooped his mother into his arms before heading over to talk to his colleagues. paul whelan, a michigan corporate security executive, was greeted by his wife. and alsu kurmasheva, a journalist with dual u.s.-russian citizenship, runs to her family. a special birthday present for her daughter who just turned 13 today. leah mishkin is following the breaking developments from london. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. what a moment. this has been months in the making behind-the-scenes negotiations. our team in washington spoke to

whelan's family, and they said they were deeply grateful. he was arrested in 2018 after traveling to russia for a wedding. his family said it would take some time for him to adjust, but what a relief for all these families. a historic and emotional homecoming. three americans, marine veteran paul whelan, "wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich, and radio journalist alsu kurmasheva reunited with their families on u.s. soil following the release from russian custody. the president and vice president were there to greet them. did you think that this would moment come would come, sir? >> yes. >> reporter: 16 prisoners were released from russia including u.s. permanent resident and pulitzer prize winning writer vladimir kara-murza, an outspoken kremlin critic who was serving 25 years on charges of treason. eight prisoners were returned to russia. among them was convicted murderer vadim krasikov, who was serving a life sentence in germany. russian nationals were also released from the u.s. slovenia, poland, and norway. >> i asked them to do some

things that were against their immediate self-interest. and really very difficult for them to do. especially germany and slovenia. >> this is an extraordinary testament to the importance of having a president who understands the power of diplomacy. >> reporter: earlier yesterday the families of the released prisoners were at the white house. >> it is unbelievable because we didn't expect this to happen. >> reporter: the biden administration is facing some criticism that the exchange could embolden russian president vladimir putin to arrest more americans. >> i don't buy this idea that you're not going -- going to let people rot in jail because other people may be captured. >> reporter: the three freed americans will undergo medical treatment as they adjust to life back home. in the past three years the biden administration has secured the release of more than 60 hostages or wrongfully detained people including basketball star and u.s. olympian brittney griner who said in a statement yesterday every american returned is a win. unfortunately, there are several

other americans still being held in russia who were not part of yesterday's prisoner exchange. anne-marie? >> a good reminder. leah mishkin, thank you. coming up on "cbs mornings," u.s. national security adviser jake sullivan will join us to talk more about the prisoner swap and how it came about. and now to the presidential race. and instead of trying to quiet his critics, former president donald trump is doubling down on falsely questioning kamala harris' racial identity. he posted a -- on social media yesterday a family portrait of the vice president and wrote, "your warmth, friendship, and love of your indian heritage are very much appreciated." pennsylvania governor josh shapiro canceled a fundraising trip this weekend among speculation he could be kamala harris' running mate. she's expected to make the announcement next week. ed o'keefe reports. >> reporter: speaking at the funeral for the late texas congresswoman sheila jackson

lee, vice president harris seemed to get ahead of herself. >> as the united states senator i was proud to co-sponsor. and as president -- as vice president, it was my honor with the president -- with the president -- [ cheers ] -- it was my honor. >> reporter: harris is facing the biggest decision yet of her campaign -- who to pick as a running mate. cbs news has learned at least six men have had calls with her team about the job. four governors, a senator, and a cabinet secretary. as they continue sharing information with her team, pete buttigieg dodged questions about his chances. >> what i will say is i think so highly of her as a leader, and really proud to serve with her in this administration. >> where the values of -- >> reporter: illinois governor j.b. pritzker released this video touting his record. >> there's no better place to see the change possible under democratic leadership than here in illinois. >> reporter: and minnesota governor tim walz, a former high school teacher, marveled he's in the mix at all. >> i don't know if every high school geography teacher expects to be in this position at some

point. but it is very strange to be running on my treadmill and have people talking about the things that are there. and i scream back, this guy is too old. i'm running my butt off on the treadmill. >> reporter: as harris faces scrutiny, she is highlighting her time as attorney general. >> kamala harris prosecuted transnational gang members and got them sentenced to prison.p> being sentenced to prison. >> reporter: former president donald trump and his running mate, senator j.d. vance, keep raising doubts about her focus on the root causes of immigration. vance spoke to cbs news while touring the u.s.-mexico border in arizona. >> i think the root cause of illegal immigration are that kamala harris refuses to do her job. that's what we have to focus on. >> reporter: ed o'keefe, cbs news, washington. tensions are rising in the middle east after iran vowed fierce revenge on israel for the recent killings of senior leaders of hamas and hezbollah. the body of hamas' political chief, ismail haniyeh, arrived

in qatar where he will be laid to rest today. he was killed in an explosion this week believed to have been carried out by israel. "the new york times" reports the blast that also killed his bodyguard, was set off by a remote-controlled bomb smuggled into the guest house about two months ago. israel has not claimed responsibility. the latest development, this latest development comes as the israeli military says that it has confirmed that head of hamas' military wing, mohammed def, was killed in an air strike in gaza last month. hamas claimed he survived. hezbollah's leader is also vowing revenge on israel saying the conflict has entered a, quote, new phase after the idf killed one of its top leaders near beirut this week. global leaders are concerned the killings will lead to a wider conflict. the illinois sheriff in charge of the deputy who shot and killed sonya massey inside her home sits down for a one-on-one interview with cbs news. he says that the officer had not only been trained but retrained

to avoid that type of unwarranted lethal force. the sheriff also gave cbs' roxana saberi a harsh assessment of the former deputy now charged with massey's murder. >> this was a rogue individual that acted outside the scope of his authority. he's been arrested, and he will pay the price. >> reporter: sangamon sheriff jack campbell says when he hired deputy sean grayson in may of last year he received twice as much training as other new deputies. >> he had all the training he needed. he just didn't use it. >> reporter: how did he slip through the cracks? >> i don't know. >> reporter: grayson is being held in jail after being charged with three counts of first-degree murder for killing sonya massey on july 6th. >> drop the [ bleep ] -- >> reporter: cbs news has learned that grayson had a history of disciplinary issues at other law enforcement agencies including allegations he put false information in his police reports. [ siren ] and once disobeyed a command to end a high-speed chase.

are you disappointed that you didn't receive that -- >> i would have rather had it, yes. >> reporter: would it have changed your decision to hire him? >> i can't speculate. >> reporter: grayson pleaded guilty twice to driving under the influence of alcohol in 2015 and '16. did that raise any red flags? >> no, it's not a red flag. >> reporter: one dui people might think, okay, a mistake. but two, does he have a drinking problem? that didn't raise any concerns for you? >> there was nothing in his past at all that would decertify him as an officer in illinois. >> reporter: in a community meeting on monday, residents called for the sheriff to resign. >> what we've got here -- resign before hurt anybody in the community, it's not acting in good faith. [ applause ] >> reporter: what steps can you take to rebuild trust in you and your office? >> when i was elected to rain -- to run the sheriff's office overwhelmingly twice, and that -- that responsibility means in good times and in bad. >> reporter: what could you and your office have done better? >> i don't think there's much we could have done better.

>> reporter: grayson has been fired from the sheriff's office and pleaded not guilty to the murder charges. when reached by cbs news, his attorney declined to comment. roxana saberi, cbs news, springfield, illinois. much of florida is under a state of emergency ahead of potential tropical weather that could hit this weekend or as early as next week. the national hurricane center says that there is a high chance the tropical disturbance brewing in the caribbean could form into a tropical depression or storm. forecasters warn there is a significant threat of torrential rain and flash floods over most of florida. coming up, victory for the nfl. a judge's decision in a huge multibillion dollar lawsuit against the league. and icy tribute. marking the tenth anniversary of the ice bucket challenge. randm”! [ cheers ] >> the als ice bucket challenge is back. massachusetts governor maura healey and sports stars dumped cold water on themselves to mark the tenth anniversary of the social media campaign. the event was part of an effort to renew interest in raising money to find a cure for lou gehrig's disease. the nfl's victory in court, and the u.s. weighs in on venezuela's disputed presidential election. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "associated press" reports the u.s. government announced that it is recognizing opposition candidate edmundo gonzalez as the winner of venezuela's presidential election. it comes after the country's electoral authority declared president nicolas maduro the winner of sunday's election. the opposition says that it has evidence proving it won the election overwhelmingly. secretary of state antony blinken says it's clear that gonzalez won.

"usa today" says the autopsy report on the man who tried to assassinate former president donald trump was released. the butler county, pennsylvania, coroner determined that thomas crooks died from a single gunshot wound to the head. he ruled the official cause of death a homicide. the fbi says a secret service sniper shot crooks after he fired eight rounds during a trump rally last month. one man was killed. and "deadline" says a federal judge tossed out a jury's $4.7 billion judgment against the nfl over the price of sunday ticket subscriptions. last month a jury awarded damages in a class-action lawsuit to residential and business subscribers who paid for the package of out-of-market nfl games on directv. the just said the testimony of two witnesses for the plaintiffs used faulty economic models and should have been excluded. up next, bill and ted together again. actors keanu reeves and alex winter reunite, but this time on broadway. broadway.

the nasdaq by 405 points, and the s&p 500 closed down 75 points. chipmaker intel announced it will lay off 15% of its work force as it tries to compete with the success of rivals like nvidia. the company posted a $1.6 billion second-quarter loss this year. most of the layoffs which will affect around 15,000 workers will be completed by the end of the year. the biden administration proposed a new rule that would ban airlines from charging families extra fees to sit together on a flight. the proposed rule would require airlines to seat parents and kids 13 and younger together for free if adjacent seating is available at the time of booking. alaska, american, frontier and jetblue have ended the fees. and babies 'r' us is back. new locations are popping up inside of kohl's stores with 200 locations rolling out by the fall.
