it's monday, august 5th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." here comes debby. the storm gaining strength to hurricane status as it gets ready to slam florida's west coast. the countdown is on. kamala harris just hours away from unveiling her running mate and kicking off a tour of battleground states.

and watching and waiting. israel braces for a possible retaliatory attack from iran as the u.s. sends more military power to the region. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with hurricane debby, now a category-one storm, closing in on florida. most of the of the sunshine state is under a state of emergency. debby is expected to make landfall later this morning along florida's big bend. forecasters are warning of potentially record-setting rain, catastrophic flooding, and life-threatening storm surge. we have team coverage for you. david parkinson is tracking the storm's path. but we're going to start with jarred hill here on the impact already being felt in florida. what's going on? >> we've already got 61 out of 67 counties in florida with a state of emergency this morning ahead of hurricane debby making landfall there in florida. as you mentioned, the water from this storm is a huge concern. look at this right here.

video from just last night. a flooded parking plot to clearwater, florida. you can see the water already up to the handles on some of those cars. then check this out from yesterday on san carlos island. >> make sure you're executing your plan now as the storm comes. you may see -- you may get hit with an awful lot of water, lot of rain. there may be immediate impacts that you see. but you could also see flooding that happens days afterwards after the storm passes. >> all right. so off the small town of boca grand near fort myers, a dramatic open-water rescue. coast guard crews right here saving two boaters whose boat lost sail in those choppy waters. again, just a look at some of the impacts we're already seeing in the region. already over 100,000 customers in florida are without power this morning, and we are barely at the beginning of this. anne-marie, while the -- florida is expected to take the initial hit, folks across the southeast

are also bracing for some serious rain and flooding, as well. >> yeah. that looks already pretty bad. thank you very much. all right. we're going to bring in cbs senior weather producer david parkinson with the latest on debby's track. a lot of people are still trying to get in their last-minute vacation, and something tells me this storm is going to mess a few people up. >> certainly. this is not just where the storm is making landfall. if you are as far away as the outer banks, you will be impacted. landfall taking place this morning. the center off the big bend. then the storm is going to slow to a crawl. take a look at the storm as we track it up. here's the interesting thing -- once it gets over georgia and south carolina, it barely moves. look at all these locators co-located. it's really not moving. the storm is right here, just off the georgia coast tuesday by 8 p.m. it's only made it to charleston by thursday at 8:00 p.m.

it will take two full days to go from jacksonville to charleston. and all the while it's dumping rain for hour after hour after hour. that means a foot to a foot and a half of rain for charleston and savannah. that is catastrophic flooding. that would be some of the worst flooding they have ever seen in these locations. we saw it with harvey. when you have a storm parking over an area, this is the danger. the threat from this storm is freshwater flooding. it begins today and continues all week long. >> good to know. thank you, david. all right. onto some other news. vice president kamala harris is closing in on the biggest decision of her two-week presidential campaign -- who will be her running mate. that announcement is expected by tomorrow. meanwhile, a new cbs poll shows harris with a slight edge up 1% over donald trump and tied across battleground states. cbs' natalie brand reports from the white house. >> reporter: every car going in and out of the vice president's residence under the microscope as she meets with some of her top running mate contenders. cbs news has confirmed the interviews include minnesota

governor tim walz, arizona senator mark kelly, and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. voters from that battleground state believe selecting a moderate could help in november. >> i think this will be a close election, so impacting even a sliver of independents or maybe undecided i think could bring over enough people to make a difference. >> reporter: new cbs news polling shows harris has infused new energy into the race with the percentage of democrats who say they'll definitely vote rising to its highest point this year. she's increased support among groups such as black voters, younger voters, and women. in the poll she's leading trump on the question of cognitive health. >> crazy kamala -- kamala -- there's about 19 different ways of saying it. >> reporter: as the former president tries to define his new opponent, stepping up attacks both personally and on policy -- >> if harris wins this election, you will quickly have a kamala economic crash. >> reporter: the new polling

shows trump still maintains a sizable lead with voters who say they'll be financially better off with him in office, a feeling echoed by supporters at his georgia rally this weekend. >> i don't vote on personality. i vote for policy. and i vote based upon how it affects my wallet. >> reporter: the new cbs polling shows more voters believe trump's policies would decrease crossings at the southern border as immigration remains a top issue for republicans. natalie brand, cbs news, the white house. president biden plans to convene his national security team today as the u.s. and its allies prepare to defend israel from an expected iranian counter strike as early as today. this as more american warships and fighter jets are on the way to the region. cbs' debora patta reports from jerusalem. >> reporter: another blow against peace. israeli police clash with protesters in tel aviv where not even the threat of an iranian attack could keep them off the

streets. they accuse their prime minister of choosing escalation over a hostage deal, but netanyahu remains defiant and says former israeli diplomat alan pincus increasingly at odds with the u.s. >> he's gone completely rogue, meaning untethered from reality, intent on igniting a regional war, defying the military, defying president biden. >> reporter: pincus believes the assassination of ismail haniyeh may have been justified, but it was not smart. >> the location in tehran was meant deliberately to elicit provocation and escalation. >> they killed fuad shukur in a targeted air strike, ismail haniyeh, why go after gaza?

>> if you can pinpoint a precise attack 2,000 kilometers away, then why bother decimating entire neighborhoods? that's me telling you that assassinations are morally and ethically okay, but dropping those bombs on gaza are not. >> reporter: still, those bombs keep falling. israeli forces hit a hospital in the middle of the night and a school sheltering families displaced repeatedly by war. "my brother was covered in blood," said this teenager as she relived the trauma. lives blown apart, neighborhoods already reduced to rubble, pulverized once again. as this country remains on high alert, netanyahu has once again warned that anyone who harms israel will pay a heavy price.

debora patta, cbs news, jerusalem. ukraine's president volodymyr zelenskyy says ukrainian pilots have started flying american-made f-16 fighter jets to boost the war effort against russia. zelenskyy showed off two of the newly arrived planes donated by western allies at an undisclosed base yesterday. president biden gave the go ahead for used f-16s to be deployed to ukraine, but the u.s. is not providing any of its own planes. and this morning there are at least 85 large wildfires burning across the western u.s., including the park fire in northern california. cooler temperatures have helped firefighters contain almost a third of the blaze that's grown to more than 400,000 acres in less than two weeks. it's destroyed more than 570 structures and is now the fourth largest fire ever in california. thousands remain under evacuation orders. coming up, worsening violence. riots break out in the uk in the

i said let' i said let's put the bear in central park and make it look like -- >> that's independent presidential candidate robert f. kennedy jr. solving a near-decade-old mystery about who put a dead 6-month-old bear cub in new york's central park with a bicycle on top of it. in a video posted to social media yesterday, kennedy told roseanne barr, he said that he put the bear in his car after a driver in front of him hit and killed it. kennedy confessed that he was behind the burbank. when a fact checker from the "new yorker" called to verify the story for an upcoming article. there are new clues in the murder of actor johnny wactor, and violence erupts in the uk.

those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." the "bbc" reports keer starmer is holding an emergency meeting today after violent clashes between protesters and police. he condemned far-right thuggery that left at least ten police officers hurt and more than 150 people arrested. in one incident in northern england, rioters tried to break into a hotel being used to house asylum seekers. the violence comes in the wake of stabbing rampage at a dance class last week that killed three young girls, a 17-year-old boy was arrested. cbs los angeles says police released images of the suspects in the deadly shooting of "general hospital" actor johnny wactor. l.a. detectives released still security images yesterday of three suspects and a vehicle in connection with the death in may. authorities say he had just finished his bar tending shift

it's a dog-gone good time at a northern california beach this weekend as thousands showed up to watch the world dog surfing championships. four-legged contestant rode the waves, each showing off their own style. about 15 contestants competed in four divisions, small, medium, large, and extra large. the dogs' owners seemed to agree that just by being there they're all winners. breaking financial news overnight. japan's nikkei stock index plunged 12.4% today in the latest bout of selloffs that are shaking world markets as investors worry about the state of the u.s. economy. this follows friday's dismal jobs report. here's erica brown with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: all three major indices plunged friday after the latest jobs report fell short of expectations, sparking fears of slow economic growth and another recession. the dow dropped 610 points, the

nasdaq fell 417, and the s&p 500 was down 100 points. that jobs report stoking fear on wall street, showed employers added only 114,000 jobs in july. that's 35% less than anticipated with the unemployment rate at 4.3%. its highest rate in almost three years. analysts say part of the slow economic growth could be due to some of the lasting impacts of hurricane beryl that slammed texas last month. federal reserve chair jerome powell said last week that despite cooling the economy and labor markets remain strong. a drug store revamp may be coming to a location near you. walgreens is testing smaller stores about a quarter of the size of its original locations. while cvs is rolling out full health clinics in some of their stores, creating better access to health care. this comes as both companies have closed a number of their locations nationwide. and the summer box office is heating up with "deadpool and

here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ it was a golden weekend for team usa at the paris olympics. usa's noah lyles is now the world's fastest man. lyles taking gold in the 100-meter sprint by .005 second. in a photo finish between the top seven runners, a stunning loss for team usa in the pool as china took home the gold in the 4-by-100-meter medley replay. -- relay. two of the winning swimmers reignited controversy, though, as they were involved in the chinese doping scandal at the tokyo games. on the women's side, team usa not only took gold in the 4-by-100-meter medley relay but set a new world record. and a new record for bobby fink
