news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. >> hello, i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. it's a move that's been touted for a while by elon musk, moving the x headquarters out of san francisco. the company is now planning to close its san francisco office in the next few weeks. that's according to "the new york times". the times got ahold of an internal memo from the chief executive. it said employees at the mid market location will be moving to offices in san jose. they would also be moving to an engineering office in palo alto that will share space with musk's start-up xai. but just last month musk shared on social media he was moving the headquarters of x out of san francisco to austin, texas. he said the move was in response to governor newsom signing a law banning policies that require teachers to tell parents if their child changes their gender identity. he called it, quote, the final

straw. the former twitter headquarters have been in mid market since 2012 when the company moved in more than a decade ago they received a big tax break from city leaders hoping for a revitalization of the area. so what does this mean for the future of market at a time when many businesses and companies are packing up and heading out of town? our kelsi thorud spoke to a business owner who says she's trying to look at the bright side. >> reporter: jen ho has owned the beer home for more than a decade. >> we opened 11 years ago today, 2013. and so yeah, wore just trying to be a cornerstone for this neighborhood. >> reporter: the beer hall sits across from x's headquarter, and in 2013 when the company was twitter, jen says this area was the place to be. >> it was definitely the hey day. when we opened twitter was here, it was sort of a tech

hub. there were also tech offices. residential buildings were going up. >> reporter: jen says they used to partner with twitter, providing beverage services for building and hosting happy hours for their employees. things were going great, then the pandemic hit. >> the streets -- it's just not the same. people aren't out anymore. >> reporter: jen says the work from home mandates gutted the neighborhood and their business. now that musk has announced x is officially leaving the city, jen says the worse of the impact is probably already behind them. >> he's been pretty vocal about his disdain for san francisco in its current state. honestly, it's been bad news for this neighborhood for the past four years. >> reporter: now jen says she just wants to focus on the future. her business continues to chug along, and they're hoping others in the area can do the same. >> i certainly hope that people will come back. i mean, i think

that small businesses are the heart of san francisco. it's why people want to live here and stay here. >> reporter: jen says it'll certainly be sad to see what once was such an iconic building sit vacant, but she's hopeful it'll find a new tenant and this neighborhood will find a new energy. >> just last mont the former twitter headquarters was looking to list the building. according to the chronicle, x has hired a real estate firm to sublease the entire complex. it covers roughly 800,000 square feet at market and ninth streets. here's a look at the timeline since elon musk bought the company. he started buying up twitter shares in january of 2022. in april, musk made his offer of $44 billion to buy the company. in july, he threatened to back out, so twitter sued. he finally bought the company that october. around the time of the agreement, musk paid a visit to twitter headquarters on market street in san

francisco holding a sink, and he tweeted that video with the caption let that sink in. a year after he bought the company, the twitter sign, including the iconic bluebird, was removed in july of 2023. the platform would eventually get transformed to x. and you may remember this sign perched on top of the headquarters a year ago. it was a bright flashing x. it was installed as part of the social media platform's rebrand. well, neighbors immediately complained when it first lit up mid market. the city said the company didn't have a permit to install it. the sign was eventually taken down. it is the final domino to fall on the fate of the oakland coliseum. the a's have finally decided to sell off their half of the site to african american sports and entertainment group. that group already had a deal in place with the city to purchase the other half. john ramos reports on what happens next now that a major hurd until the way of redevelopment

has been cleared. >> reporter: the announcement came from the a's. they had reached a deal with the african american sports and entertainment group to sell their interest in the 112-acre coliseum property for $125 million. aaseg's managing member ray bobbitt says it is important for there to only be one owner. >> it unlocks the entire opportunity. and it unlocks the opportunity for us to bring development to east oakland as, you know, much sooner than anybody could have ever imagined. that's the big part of it. >> reporter: for decades, the land had been locked in a quagmire of different owners and interests, each with the ability to veto any movement. it felt strange when the a's ended up with a piece of the pie when they were telling the whole world that building there was not viable. >> the coliseum is not an option. we need to find another place, another home. >> reporter: so now the team will have no say in a property they are rushing to abandon,

and brian johansson, who founded a fan group called the last dive bar, couldn't be happier. >> finally, right? getting him off of the coliseum property, the coliseum land, and finally allowing like for one entity to own that entire land. >> reporter: there have always been big ideas for the property. in 2015, a grand vision for something called coliseum city was floated that looked like a futuristic dream. but that was when three professional sports teams were still playing there. now bobbitt says they still hope to center on sports and entertainment, but they feel a responsibility to provide for the needs of the local community, like affordable housing and open space. >> it's really helpful for us, and it's obviously for personal for me, to be in a position where we actually can accomplish this. because we do have one of the most valuable sites in the country. >> reporter: there are no specifics yet, just a lot of good intentions, but the owners say they are willing and able to invest $5 billion to become a catalyst for the entire area.

and johansson is happy to disappoint all the oakland naysayers. >> for the doom loopers, i say, man, have fun. have fun. you know? because this day has come, and this day is going to continue to come into the future, you know, with this huge, huge economic stimulus project that's coming in to the area. >> reporter: the ownership group says the first step will be planning, but they say anything they come up with will happen a lot sooner now that there is only one hand on the steering wheel. >> no timeline for construction has been released, but the new owners say the project will be done in phases and will likely take at least 15 years to complete. meantime, the a's are expected to play next season in west sacramento whole they wait for a new stadium in las vegas to be built. kamala harris has formally secured her democratic presidential nomination. she becomes the first woman of color to lead a major party ticket. and tomorrow, tomorrow morning we could learn who she chooses as her running mate. whoever it might be would be

joining her on the road as she's expected to tour seven battleground states over the next few days. and according to harris' schedule, she's coming back home to the bay area this weekend. harris is expected to travel to san francisco this saturday after a campaign event in las vegas. it's unclear what time and where she's going to appear at the moment. her vp could possibly be joining her as well. harris is expected to pick one of these six men to join her on the democratic ticket, so we spoke to sonoma state university professor david mckeown, who believes it will be the minnesota governor. >> so if i had to pick, lay the money down, i think it would be tim walz. there is some worry about governor shapiro being jewish and with muslim american voters in michigan. the view with walz is even though you get him from minnesota, you book end into those rust belt states. >> a new cbs poll finds trump

and harris tied across the battleground states as well as nationally. still unclear when and if harris and trump will face off in a televised presidential debate. trump says he's agreed to an offer from fox news to debate harris on september 4th, whole the harris campaign says it will stick to the original plan for an abc news debate on september 10th. and cbs news bay area is your election station. we will bring you the latest updates from the campaign trail on air and online at kpix.com. a local leader hired to help people in the community now facing a list of charges including rape. jonathan jacobo is accused of sexually assaulting a woman back in 2021. so this is video. it was from an event we covered last year that featured jacobo as a speaker. the d.a. referred to him as a mission district leader having worked for the nonprofit before resigning in april. now, investigators say

jacobo assaulted a woman in his home months after she ended a relationship with him. he's charged with rape by force, sexual battery, and domestic violence among other charges and is due in court tuesday. prosecutors ordered he be kept in custody ahead of the trial citing public safety concerns. a suspect tracked down in southern california after he killed his girlfriend and her unborn child in san mateo. police found the woman who was nine months pregnant dead at a home around 6:00 last night. witnesses told them they believe her live-in boyfriend was responsible for killing her. investigators were able to track down andrew coleman to west covina, where he was arrested. right now police tell us they are not sure what led up to the killing. they are waiting for an autopsy report to determine how she was murdered. well, tonight the san jose police department is mourning the loss of a community service officer who was killed on the

job over the weekend. long pham and his partner were struck by a suspected drunk driver at a traffic diversion on monterey road that was saturday night. pham died on the way to the hospital. his partner is hospitalized and is expected to survive. community service officers are civilian positions that assist the department responding to and investigating lower priority calls. officer christina garza was a friend and coworker. she returned to the crash scene to pay her respects. >> his life was taken way too soon. we were here to serve the community. we love san jose, but when something like this tragic happens it really hits home. >> the driver of the car was booked on several counts including dui and vehicular manslaughter. police say he has a prior conviction for dui. pham was born in vietnam but was raised in san jose. he is survived by his parents and a brother. still ahead, flames quickly spread in a hillside

now to our fire watch, a fast-moving fire in southern california destroyed several homes in a san bernardino neighborhood. the edgehill fire broke out just before 3:00 p.m. temperatures making things worse, climbing to 109 degrees at one point. evacuations are still in place. there were no reports of any injuries, and the cause of the fire is under investigation tonight. in northern california the park fire has now burned an

area nearly 14 times the size of san francisco. the fire has destroyed about 1,300 structures since it started two and a half weeks ago. progress is being made, though, with containment now up to 34%. and now tropical storm debby is leaving behind a major impact near the gulf where you can see flood waters taking over roads and surrounding homes in florida. the storm dumped record-setting amounts of rain into boechs and sandy roads. the misery is more likely to continue as the storm makes its way into georgia and south carolina where heavy rain is also expected. so now let's go to our first alert weather to talk about our conditions here as well. hey, paul. >> yeah, jules, it makes you appreciate living in the bay area where we don't have to worry about tropical systems. all we have to worry about is the fog that occasionally develops as our windows are closing around me there. let's get our view of the bay bridge back up, and we'll talk about tropical storm debby, continuing to weaken in terms of wind speeds, but it's

producing a ton of rain. we're going to zoom in for a closer look at the map here. the swirl associated with landfalling tropical storm. the concern is going to be all of that rain as it is moving through georgia into south carolina. we're talking about potential for 10 to 15 inches of rain, even close to 20 inches of rain from savannah, georgia, up towards charleston, south carolina, and this flooding threat is going to encompass much of the entire eastern seaboard. again, makes you appreciate that we live in an area where we just have to worry about, of course, drought and earth equakes and wildfires. there's always something we can focus on, but this is the big national story over the next couple of days. let's take that off the map and talk about what's going the change around here. the return of the heat dome is in store for us as we head through the next couple of days. really the heat is going to peak tomorrow as the heat dome edges a little closer to us and then it's going to retreat once again. kind of a slow return towards near normal temperatures as we head through the rest of the week after a hot day tomorrow. looking outside right now, this is the

view, i believe, from salesforce tower, obscured by fog. temperatures in the 50s and 60s across the board. 56 degrees in san francisco and santa rosa. low 60s elsewhere. those numbers will continue to drop off as we head through the rest of tonight as the fog tries to spread out. let's take a look back at the floor map here and show you how things are going to shape up through the rest of tonight into early tomorrow morning, starting with the fog, which is going to push across the bay into the inland valleys. some intrusion into those inland valleys to begin the day tomorrow. the weight of the atmosphere on top of us means a shallow marine layer and not capable of overcoming the marine obstacles in the bay. won't take long to pull out of inland valleys. we're going to start off close to average. these are the forecast lows for tomorrow. starting off in the low 50s into the north bay. north bay valleys efficient at collecting the cooler temperatures. let's get the right numbers on the map here and talk about low temperatures for tomorrow morning. there we go. every once in a while the

computers play tricks on us. 50s for most of us. some of us staying in the lower half of the 60s. that's the case in the santa clara valley as well. let's take a look at forecast high temperatures for tomorrow. that's more like it. low to mid-90s in the santa clara valley. 100 degrees around morgan hill. the hottest spots make it to about 100. likely for fairfield as well. a mix of 0s and 80s around the bay, 90 degrees down the peninsula in redwood city. mid-60s along the coast in half moon bay. san francisco should top # 0 degrees tomorrow afternoon. temperatures in the north bay not quite as hot as other parts of the bay area. the good news is, if you're not a fan of the heat, the heat is not going to last forever. we return to near average temperatures by the end of the week. and the long range outlook, the eight to 14-day outlook shows the heat getting pushed farther and farther off to our east while around california we actually have a good chance of below average temperatures settling in as we

head past the midpoint of august. let's check out the seven-day forecast and we'll start with inland temperatures, which are going to peak tomorrow. and then they start to retreat a little bit back down into the lower half of the 90s from wednesday through the first half of the weekend and even 80s for a couple of days sunday and monday. temperatures around the bay don't warm up much in the first place. 70s tomorrow then low to mid-70s. sunshine each and every day. along the coast, not much of a break from the fog. widespread fog, low cloud cover, some patches of drizzle and temperatures, you're used to seeing them, in the lower half of the 60s. a walnut creek business owner says she's being attacked for promoting a new chick-fil-a off oak grove road near walnut creek and concord. dozens of neighbors have spoken out against the chain, arguing it will add to the traffic in the busy area and lead to iniossed loitering, but the owner of the european delights
