it's tuesday, august 6th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." decision day. kamala harris set to unveil her running mate today as she officially clinches the democratic presidential nomination.

debby's deluge. millions facing devastating tropical rainfall as the storm moves across florida, georgia, and the carolinas. bouncing back, one day after a massive selloff sent stocks sinking. good morning. i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. a big day in the presidential race. first, vice president kamala harris officially secured the democratic nomination late last night, and, second, we're about to learn who she's picked as her running mate before the two hit the road to stump in battleground states starting in pennsylvania. cbs's jarred hill is following the latest on this. hey, jarred, good morning. >> hay, shah hey /* knell night, vice president kamala harris texted supporters she had not hey, shanelle. as of 7:00 eastern last night, vice president kamala harris texted supporters she had not yet made a decision about a running mate.

that, though, is expected to change by this morning. this morning vice president now harris and her yet to be named running mate are about to set off in the tour of seven battleground starts starting in pennsylvania. over the weekend harris met with key contenders including minnesota governor tim walz, arizona senator mark kelly, and pennsylvania governor josh shapiro. people weighed in at the state fair in swing state wisconsin. >> all the individuals that have within listed are great choices. i wish it could be pete buttigieg, but this country is not ready for that just yet. >> reporter: some think the choice won't impact the outcome in november. >> i think democrats are going to vote democrat and republicans are going to vote republican no matter who the candidate is. it appears that way with the candidates we have. >> reporter: in an interview with youtuber adin ross, he

commented on the potential pick. >> all of the people he's looking at are much better than her. these are people that were thinking about running. they would have run. >> reporter: the latest cbs news poll find harris and trump essentially tied across battleground states as well as nationally. the harris vp pick announcement will also come with a likely new campaign video before they show up in pennsylvania. you know who else is going to be in pennsylvania today, former president donald trump's running mate jd vance. both will carve a path. back to you. >> jarred hill in new york, thank you. now to debby, which may weaken to a tropical storm, but is still packing a powerful punch, slamming much of the southeast with historic rainfall and catastrophic flooding. at least five deaths are being blamed on the storm so far, one in georgia and four in florida, including a 13-year-old boy. states of emergency have been declared in florida, georgia, and south carolina.

cbs's tom hanson kicks off our team coverage from florida's west coast. >> reporter: when hurricane debby roared ashore in horseshoe beach with 80-mile-an-hour winds, jim and sally johnson were bracing for the worst. >> the water was between here to here. >> reporter: in a matter of hours, the home where they plan to retire was slammed by storm surge. >> the house was shaking like we were in a plane in turbulence throughout most of the storm. >> reporter: it's the second time in less than a year this tiny fishing village has been hit by hurricanes. a one-two punch from idalia and now debby. >> we just did not expect this again, you know. it just -- we're just shaking our heads over it. >> it's sad, but we have a saying here. it's called horseshoe strong, and we help each other.

>> reporter: much of the town is barricaded off so crews can clear the roads to allow residents back in. those who stayed will be sitting in the dark without electricity. governor ron desantis says the state is sending 4,500 national guard. >> they've completed 3500. they're in the process of completing another 400 more. >> reporter: debby's next stop is georgia. i'm cristian benavides in savannah, georgia, which is already under a state of emergency. the storm is hours away. the storm is expected to dump historic levels of rainfall, up to 30 inches. >> 55 years. >> you've lived here your whole life. >> my whole entire life. >> have you ever gotten sandbags for a storm? >> no, this is my first time.

>> reporter: this sash na resident's home flooded last week during a thunderstorm. she's putting up sandbags and gearing up to hunker down. >> what goes through your mind hearing that it could potentially be up to 30 inches of rain in some areas? >> scary. scary. doing all we can to prepare. >> that was our cristian benavides in savannah, georgia. now let's bring in senior weather producer david parkinson for where debby is headed next. david, debby is also bringing record-setting rainfall as we mentioned that could be measuring in feet, not inches. >> yeah, 28 inches is the record in south carolina. here's the problem. look at all of these bands wrapping up around it all the way up to myrtle beach in south carolina. here's an interesting thing. almost a foot of rain. 11.3 feet between charleston and savannah. this is how much rain already

fell in florida, but it is the low country of south carolina that i'm most concerned about. take a look at the potential track of this storm. it goes off the coast. it's barely moving for the next two days, and then it begins to take off to the north. how much additional rain on top of what we've already seen? the area in white is a foot of rain, the area in black is a foot and a half. we're not only concerned about the lower country but up to the middle sections of the state. not only up the coast but into the mid-atlantic as well. the pentagon now says several u.s. personnel were injured in a suspected rocket attack at a military base in iraq. officials tell cbs news it appears two rockets were fired at the al asad air base yesterday. the injured are expected to survive. no one has claimed responsibility for the attack. and the attack comes amid growing fears of an all-out war

in the middle east with iran and its proxies threatening to strike israel for the recent assassinations of senior hamas and hezbollah leaders. president biden met with his national security team yesterday as the u.s. tries to rally allies to pressure iran to contain the scope of its retaliation and create a coalition to help defend the jewish state. cbs's debora patta has more from east jerusalem. >> reporter: the war drums are getting louder. following the assassination, both israel and iran say they don't want this to escalate, but nobody wants to be the first to take a step back. former israeli diplomat to the u.s., elan pinkas. >> and most worrying is the so-called 360-degree attack.

hezbollah, lebanon, iran from the east, the houthis in western yemen from the south, hamas in both gaza and the west bank. so israel will be encircled. >> and where does america sit in all of this, and what should they be doing? >> the last thing america wants is a scenario where they're dragged into the conflict. >> reporter: u.s. general michael kirill will helped coordinate the attack in april when more than 300 missiles and drones were fired and was back here meeting with israel's defense minister. the u.s. still believes the best way to prevent this from spiralling out of control is a cease-fire in gaza. in weekend protests, families and friends of hostages accused prime minister benjamin netanyahu of choosing escalation over a deal. as the world's attention is focused on iran, in gaza, they

pro shop. the pilot walked away with only minor cuts on his hand. justice clarence thomas is accused of failing to disclose more private flights, and the ex-deputy who killed sonya massey gives his side of the story. those are some of the headlines on the morning newsstand. the "associated press" reports the former illinois sheriff's deputy who shot sonya massey last month says he thought she was going to kill him. the police report filed three days after the shooting, sean grayson said when massey said i rebuke you in the name of jesus and ducked behind the counter, he feared she was going to grab a weapon. grayson and another deputy responded to massey's home after she called 911 to report a possible prowler. grayson was fired and charged

with murder. he has pleaded not guilty. "the new york times" reports a top democratic senator says supreme court justice clarence thomas failed to disclose more private travel on republican mega donor harlan crow's private jet. oregon senator ron wyden sent a letter to crow's lawyer more questions about the 2024 trip from hawaii to new zealand. the letter is part of an ongoing inquiry between crow and justice thomas. a spokesman for crow says wyden's inquiries have no legal basis. jenna ellis has flipped and agreed to cooperate with arizona prosecutors in the state's 2020 fake electors case. ellis earlier pleaded not guilty to fraud, forgery, and conspiracy charges in that arizona case. officials say those charges will now be dropped. 17 others, including rudy giuliani, are defendants in the

economic growth rippled markets around the world monday with a dramatic plunge in all three major indexes. the dow dropped 1033 points, the nasdaq fell 576 points, and the s&p 500 was down 160 points, its biggest drop in nearly two years. it was a tumultuous day for global markets yesterday as anxiety about slow economic growth in the u.s. continued to spark fears of a recession. analysts say that that disappointing jobs report in july and high unemployment rate drove a massive selloff and wall street's concerns that the federal reserve may have waited too long to cut interest rates. markets in europe and asia felt the impact with japan's nikkei tumbling 12.4%, its largest drop since 1987. still with the major u.s. indexes higher than they were last year, analysts say investors and consumers shouldn't pan uc, and economic activity in the u.s. remains
