set. kamala harris introducing her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, to the nation. debby's devastation. the tropical storm still unleashing torrents of rain on the south, spawning tornadoes, and turning streets into rivers. and murder-for-hire plot. a pakistani national with alleged ties to iran accused of trying to hire hit men to kill u.s. government officials including former president donald trump. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. the new democratic ticket completely reimagined from just a few weeks ago is hitting the road to meet the voters in battleground states. today kamala harris and her vice presidential pick tim walz will be traveling to wisconsin and michigan after the two made their first appearance together last night in philadelphia. cbs' carissa lawson joins us with more on this from here in new york.

good morning. >> reporter: good morning. kamala harris and tim walz used that first rally in philadelphia to fire up the crowd as running mates on the democratic ticket and also used the moment to go on the attack against republican rival donald trump and his running mate j.d. vance. >> governor tim walz of the great state of minnesota! >> reporter: vice president kamala harris introduced her running mate, minnesota governor tim walz, to a crowd of thousands in philadelphia and to millions of voters across the country. >> he is the kind of person who makes people feel like they belong and then inspires them to dream big. and that's the kind of vice president he will be. >> reporter: this first stop for the kamala harris-walz ticket kicks off a tour to at least five other battleground states the next few days. >> this campaign, our campaign, is not just a fight against donald trump. >> reporter: in his remarks the 60-year-old governor went on the offensive against former

president donald trump and his vp running mate j.d. vance saying he can't wait to debate him. >> that is if he's willing to get off the couch and show up. these guys are creepy, and yes, weird as hell. that's what you see. >> reporter: rallying earlier tuesday also in philadelphia, vance said he'll debate walz after the democratic national convention. >> that is what's so scandalous about kamala harris' basement campaign, 16 days she has been the presumptive nominee of the democrat party. zero times she has sat for a real media joy. -- real media interviewer. that's a disgrace. >> reporter: trump released a campaign attacking harris for her vp pick. >> harris doubled down on her radical vision for america -- >> reporter: saying, quote, tim walz will be a rubber stamp for kamala's dangerously liberal agenda. the harris campaign said it raised more than $20 million after walz was announced as harris' running mate. as you mentioned, the next stop is in the midwest as governor of minnesota, the democrats hope

walz could shore up votes in that region. >> all right, carissa lawson in new york, thank you. who is tim walz? well, he went from the army national guard to the schoolhouse, then to capitol hill, and to the governor's mansion and now the presidential ticket. cbs' ed o'keefe has more. >> reporter: a quip by tim walz two weeks ago about former president donald trump and j.d. vance grabbed democrats' attention. >> these are weird people on the other side. they want to take books away, they want to be in your exam room. >> reporter: and it caught on. >> don't you find some of their stuff weird? >> reporter: born in nebraska the 60-year-old governor in his second term has marveled at the interest in him. >> i don't know if every high school geography teacher expects to be in this position at some point. >> reporter: he also coached the state champion high school football team. an army guard veteran he ran for congress in 2006 concerned about the iraq war. >> our troops deserve a plan to win the peace --

>> reporter: he represented a southern minnesota district that strongly backed trump in 2016 and developed a bipartisan reputation that got him elected governor in 2018. critics blamed him for a flat-footed response that violence sparked by george floyd's murder in minneapolis. >> this is obviously the most difficult week in minnesota in recent history. >> reporter: a series of police reforms including a ban on choke holds followed. more recently he signed bills expanding school meals programs. [ cheers ] banning conversion therapy for minors and protecting abortion services, even visiting a women's health clinic in minnesota with harris. he and his wife gwen have two children including a daughter conceived through ivf. >> governor walz at the state fair with my daughter. >> hope. >> reporter: co-starred with him in some of his popular videos. >> we're going to get food. corn dog. >> i'm vegetarian. >> turkey then. >> reporter: we're told when harris called walz he initially didn't answer because the call came up as no caller i.d.

she called, he answered and accepted. by the end of tuesday the duo have raised $20 million, another sign of enthusiasm for the new democratic ticket. ed o'keefe, cbs news, st. paul, minnesota. now to tropical storm debby, still wreaking havoc on the south as it slowly marches north. the storm continues to drench coastal cities in georgia and south carolina with record rain. at least six people have died. cbs' manuel bojorquez has more from inside the storm zone. >> reporter: in moncks corner, south carolina, north of charleston, a tornado from tropical storm debby tore through businesses and overturned cars. >> one gentleman said shopping carts were flying in the air around him. and he jumped on top of a young lady to protect her from the glass. >> reporter: debby brought heavy rain, wind, and flooding to charleston where mayor william cogswell extended monday night's curfew until wednesday. >> we especially don't need any

yahoos driving through the water and causing damage to property. >> reporter: at least nine inches of rain have already inundated the city, and another eight to ten inches are forecast through friday. charleston was a ghost town. >> too much. easy -- >> reporter: except in this spot where a man who goes by abdul was behind the cash register at this convenience store where he has worked for 27 years. >> every storm i'm open. nobody opens, just me. >> reporter: after making landfall as a category-one hurricane on florida's west coast on monday, debby brought flooding to georgia. >> reporter: i'm cristian benevides in savannah, georgia, where some roads remain closed while flooding did not reach the historic levels that officials warned about. the heavy rainfall still left some residents picking up the pieces. >> my first instinct was to check on my kids. >> reporter: shakina conyers, a single mother of four, was sleeping while tropical storm debby pummelled her neighborhood.

her roof caved in after this tree was uprooted by the storm. family belongings in her living room and kitchen are ruined, and her apartment is uninhabitable. >> for my kids, all i know is to put a smile on my face and say we're going to be okay. >> that was our cristian benevides in savannah, georgia. here in the new york area heavy storms flooded streets and expressways, stranding some drivers. with debby moving north it could cause more flooding this week. the tropical storm will continue to move slowly and is expected to make another landfall early tomorrow in south carolina. then friday the storm picks up speed and moves into the northeast bringing heavy rain. parts of the carolinas and virginia could see more than ten inches of new rainfall and additional flooding through friday morning. for the second time this year, a member of the progressive democratic congressional group known as the squad has lost a primary election.

missouri representative cori bush was defeated yesterday by st. louis prosecutor wesley bell. bush has been credit kick of -- critical of actions in the war with hamas. the pro-israel group apac spent more than $8 million to oust bush. top u.s. national security leaders are now calling for calm in the middle east. this as they press israel and others to avoid escalating the conflict even as the u.s. moves more troops into the region. hamas named yahya sinwar its top leader in gaza who is the mastermind behind the october 7th attacks in israel as its new political leader, replacing ismail haniyeh who was killed in iran last week. the leader of lebanon's hezbollah militant group vowed to retaliate against israel for its recent air strike that killed a top commander, quote, no matter what the consequences are. just ahead of his speech, israeli jets set off sonic booms

over beirut. hours earlier, hezbollah launched drone attacks into northern israel. at least 19 people including six soldiers were wounded. the two sides have been exchanging strikes for the last ten months now. a pakistani man is charged in an alleged plot to kill u.s. government officials and politicians, including former president donald trump. asif merchant, who has alleged ties to iran, is accused of traveling to new york in april it hire hitmen. law enforcement officials received a tip and managed to disrupt this plot. sources tell cbs news word of a plot prompted the secret service to ramp up security for donald trump. investigators say they have not found evidence of a connection to the attempted assassination of trump at that pennsylvania rally. still ahead this morning, new charges in the case of a black man who died after an incident involving milwaukee hotel workers. and california quake.

breaking overnight, an earthquake rattled southern california. the 5.2-magnitude quake struck near bakersfield and was felt as far away as los angeles. video shows a camera at the santa monica pier shaking as well as studio lights at cbs los angeles. there were more than two dozen aftershocks. luckily no reports of any significant damage. nine family members were killed in an suv crash, and new charges in the death of a milwaukee man. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the milwaukee journal sentinel" reports four hotel employees were charged with felony murder, this in connection with a death of dvontaye mitchell. according to prosecutors, the four men dragged mitchell out of this milwaukee hyatt hotel in

june and held him down on his stomach for about nine minutes. the criminal complaint says mitchell was acting in a frantic manner when he ran into a woman's bathroom and attempted to lock himself inside with two women already in the bathroom. an autopsy showed mitchell had drugs in his system and died from restraint asphyxia. "the miami herald" says nine family members including six children were killed after their suv overturned into a palm beach, florida, canal. authorities say the driver, pamela wiggins, failed to negotiate a turn and lost control of that vehicle. it went off the road hitting a guardrail and flipped onto the canal. the six children killed range in age from 1 to 14 years old. and "the anchorage daily news" says a texas family is missing. this after the boat they were on capsized and sank near homer, alaska. a relative identified the missing family from troy, texas, as mary and david maynard and
