>to see the excitement of being back here. trying to climb the mountain again. ready for redemption. >we're all getting better, so we're excited. with brock purdy back at the helm, >do you feel like a veteran because that's what you are now. the 40 niners working to bring the ultimate prize. >do it for this fan base. this organization. bring us back to where we need to be home to the >bay. it's go time. we've been waiting for this >anne>i'm anne makovec in for liz today and queue the beer and watch parties it is football season again, and tomorrow the 40 niners hit the field to kick it off this

preseason is coming with a vengeance. they were, of course, so close to that super bowl win in las vegas last season. now the team and the fans want to turn the page and start fresh. so we're going to hear from some of the top players and a team insider on how they plan to get there. again, we're going to have that conversation coming up in just a few minutes. but first, a look at your news headlines. no. are you kidding me? i wouldn't ride with him for fear something might happen to the helicopter >anne>now, former san francisco mayor willie brown, laughing off claims made by former president trump, the republican presidential nominee said yesterday that he once almost crashed in a helicopter with brown who dated vice president kamala harris decades ago. well, today, brown told us that never happened. former governor jerry brown did ride in a helicopter with trump and governor newsom back in 2018 to tour wildfire damage but no flight problems were reported in san francisco. police and community members honoring the life and service of officer

luciana ortega. he suddenly collapsed while playing rugby in july, just a few days before his 30th birthday. this is his memorial at saint mary's cathedral. ortega served with the sfpd for nine years in concord. smoke pouring from the roof of this home on san jose avenue today, we're told a search and rescue team went inside and they did not find anybody. so no injuries reported. kamala harris is going to be back in san francisco this weekend. the democratic presidential nominee and her new running mate, tim walz, are holding a fundraiser sunday at the fairmont hotel at ... hill tickets start at 3300 bucks. it is the first day of outside lands, one of san francisco's biggest events of the year. thousands of music festival fans will pack golden gate park over the weekend. the headliner tonight is the killers first alert weather. now we are watching our air quality you might be seeing or even smelling wildfire smoke, meteorologist darren peck is following this for >darren>us. darren. if we look at the big picture
3:04 pm
on that, an we're actually not necessarily pulling in any direct plumes of smoke from one specific fire across the state. but there have been enough wildfires across california over the last several weeks that the smoke's just kind of nebulous. and it's getting trapped under an inversion. and we saw air quality yesterday, particularly for the inland east bay, go downhill today. we're looking at moderate at worst. so we're doing okay. and if you look at us today from space, one of the best tools to get a vantage point for where there might be any smoke, there's one that's the park fire. but you can see that plume of smokes going the other way. the crosier fire would be here, and we're not seeing any huge plumes coming off of that. let's put it in a futurecast. keep your eye on that plume right there there's crosier fire. that's park fire. this is onshore flow so for the most part, we're really looking out as we go into this early and middle part of august now where we haven't had any offshore wind scenarios and, and we really wouldn't expect those this time of year anyway. and it's doing us a favor on air
3:05 pm
quality but there's enough smoke that's just kind of drifting out there you want to really be mindful and go easy on yourself. all right. let's talk about that forecast for outside lands. and was just talking about that big event happening in golden gate park. marine layer is just hanging out right on the west side of the city today. it's gray over there. but tomorrow might be a little bit better. watch what happens on the high resolution futurecast. the marine layer builds back in again tonight. we're going to see some high clouds show up here in a second and obscure our view. but there's tomorrow in the afternoon. this gets us into the 2:00 hour. and that is a far more reduced marine layer. it's been scoured away from the coast a little more. so you're going to get a little more sunshine, not only in golden gate park tomorrow for outside lands, but over the entire city and for the entire bay. it's going to be a beautiful saturday, and we are going to start to see the temperatures coming down a little over the next few days so we'll leave behind the outside lands forecast. let me show you what's going to feel like for your part of the bay for saturday temperatures are still riding the low 90s for the inland valleys, so you're still a little bit above average for saturday. you're cooler than
3:06 pm
you had been, and it's a pretty nice day in terms of where we should be on the seasonality range for this time of year, but it's going to get cooler from here. so what we're going to look at now, we're going to transition from saturday. sunday will be a little bit cooler than this but look ahead to monday and watch the colors change. this is how we're going to start next week these temperatures are now below average. that is a duo of words that we haven't been able to say much for the forecast much this summer. below average has kind of a nice ring to it. look at the number there for livermore. you're going 80. you should be around 88 this time of year. san jose in the upper 70s. you should be in the low 80s this time of year. san francisco will be in the mid 60s. so it's kind of nice to see this. we haven't had much of it. let's see how long we can keep it around. we'll go to the seven day forecast for that. and when we look at the seven day you'll see the numbers on here that do take a dip down to the low 80s, in the seven day forecast. and that shows you a nice little drop. so i'll just get over the seven day. we'll be down to the mid 80s here. and then a little bit
3:07 pm
of a warm up as we go to wednesday and towards the middle of next week. but there doesn't really appear to be a significant return of the kind of heat that was so descriptive of what july felt like. we don't see that coming back these numbers are pretty much going to be either, at average maybe a little above it. and at times, yes even a little below average. so it's a good looking seven day forecast coming our way. and back to >anne>you. thank you darren. and we are just one day away from the start of the 40 niners preseason, the beginning of another long road that fans are hoping will once again lead to the super bowl. but let's not get ahead of ourselves. stop. one is nashville and that is where we find our matt lively matt, how's it going over >live>there yeah, that's right, an all starts right here in nashville, tennessee. 40 niners getting ready for their preseason opener against the titans. bit of a shorter off season than usual in santa clara. and everybody in that locker room is itching to get back onto the field. >>that's because of the bad
3:08 pm
taste that's left in everyone's mouth from super bowl 58. you remember that game in las vegas, don't you? the 40 niners have done just about everything but win the one that counts in recent years. nfc championship appearances, two super bowl losses in the past five years, the overtime loss to patrick mahomes and the chiefs back in february likely the toughest pill to swallow, so the niners won't be short on motivation this year. and it all starts with the captain, fred warner. our vern glenn caught up with number 54 about the massive chip on his shoulder. do you have to go out with this imaginary 200 pound chip just to kind of get on your shoulder to get you going hey, that's what it takes marina. i carry that little imaginary 200 pound, 300 pound chip. you know what? i'm saying, whatever it takes, people think that you just get to snap your fingers and, you know get right back to that moment. being in a super bowl again, the following year, just because you were there the year before and unfortunately, that's not how it works. you know, you got to climb the mountain again. we do have
3:09 pm
everything that we need in order to get back there. but you don't you don't just get back there just because you're talented. you got to put the work >live>in climbing the mountain starts here in tennessee last year, their season started in vegas. it ended in vegas in the wrong way. this year they're hoping it ends in new orleans. that's the side of super bowl 59. and hopefully this time with the lombardi trophy. >anne>and all right. and how's the heat over there matt >live>yeah you know what not so bad. we're pretty spoiled where we're at in the bay. but i can i can get used to this and the music's pretty good >anne>too. okay. all right have a good time. we're going to check back in with you later in the broadcast this afternoon. we also talked with the 40 niners team insider on her way to nashville. the secret weapons she says we need to be watching less we're reflecting on a decade of football at levi's stadium. what makes the home field so special

join the millions of people taking back their privacy well, there is no question this time around about who's going to be starting quarterback for the 40 niners. our vern glenn sat down with brock purdy in santa clara
3:13 pm
do you feel like a veteran because that's what you are now. i still feel young. so >here we are now by the time i count to three, that ball's got to be gone. that's crazy. yeah yeah. and you got just monsters coming around the edge, and they're trying to take your head off and. but that's. that's what makes the game fun. what does it mean to be like the quarterback of a team of this caliber? this loaded full of superheroes and to run out there as the prohibitive favorite to get to the super bowl again, we've got a great challenge in front of us and we're ready to take it on. all right, 13 go out and win this thing and drive that john deere tractor. that's the plan in the super bowl parade. i will look for that. yes sir. go niners. >anne>well our matt lively is going to be there in nashville for tomorrow's big game. matt a lot of new faces as well vying for spots on the niners roster.
3:14 pm
so if you can break this down for those of us who aren't football fanatics. so this preseason stuff is kind of like an audition >live>yeah, that's exactly right. preseason is really a chance for the young guys to shine. they get their chance here. the niners are really hopeful for malik mustafa. he's a fourth round safety who could have an impact immediately i got a chance to catch up with him this training >anne>camp. >>the road to the nfl has been a unique one for malik mustafa. he was a no star recruit coming out of high school and is now competing for a spot with the defending nfc champions, >something >>that i've been >doing, you know, playing for my favorite team and just being able to be around a great group of guys, you know, really good foundation here that they built here. you say your favorite team, you grew up a niners fan. yeah. weirdly so. being from charlotte, north carolina, but like my mom and their family like grew up being like a cowboys fan. so i always like went for the opposite team. and like i like using frank gore and madden. given his niner fandom, he was especially excited to meet one player in particular. after
3:15 pm
getting to santa clara. >oh, definitely. he fanga. you know, i liked to watch a lot of his film in college. he was a downhill, you know ball hawk seeking missile kind of guy that i kind of like kind of idolized and try to, you know, take bits and pieces of his game and try to, you know, form it into my game as well. the niners all pro safety is impressed by the rookie >man i do this just like outlift everyone like he's like a mini dre. that how they just walk around with this presence but twitchy athletic, smart and a guy that's really just about his business and gets things done mustafa's film study of hufanga in the dorms paid off, becoming a standout at wake forest, earning him the nickname the nigerian missile >coincidentally, one of the dudes from the bachelor, he actually went to wake forest and he tweeted after one of our syracuse games in 2021 and he tweeted that i was like nigerian or something. so i guess it just stuck until then from about 2021, when he's not flying around on the field, he's showing off his personality on social media.
3:16 pm
>oh, i'm trying to be like, no juju juju smith schuster or whatever, but like, you know, definitely something i like to do in my free time. you know, i'm pretty outgoing, pretty fun and tiktok is where i'm able to express myself a little bit more. mustafa hopes to go viral for his play on the field saturday, and he'll have plenty of support at nissan stadium. >charlotte and nashville aren't that far apart. how much family do you have coming to this game? is it going to be a huge section for you? oh yeah, it's going to be a big turnout my mom hit me up and was probably about to be like 20 people there. so it's going to be a big turnout for >live>sure. you can watch mustafa and the niners tomorrow in their preseason opener against the titans at 4 p.m. right here on kpix. we've got pre and post game coverage as well as the highly anticipated season debut of the red and gold report tonight at 730. and it's going to be fun. we're going to be live from music city row on a rooftop bar. no better place to be when you've got the honky tonks in full action. >anne>solutely. okay, so maybe have a couple beers and then maybe what i'd really love to
3:17 pm
watch is you doing a tiktok dance with that >live>guy beers after the show immediately tiktok >anne>dance off. all right, you said it here. thank you. matt, have fun another person heading to nashville for the preseason opener is 40 niner. team reporter lindsey pelas. she told us while many of the starters won't be on the field, there's plenty to be on the lookout for tomorrow and beyond >you're just going to want to look at which running backs really are going to fill out that room. i think you've got an awesome undrafted rookie addition in cody schrader. the team recently brought back matt breida, who was with the niners from 2017 to 2019, a very familiar face. jordan mason continues to assert himself in that room and then obviously the quarterback situation will work itself out. you've got two very capable and talented quarterbacks behind brock purdy, so you'll see some more development from josh dobbs.
3:18 pm
and then this is the second year in the 40 niners system for brandon allen. he's looking really, really comfortable. and then you've got tanner mordecai who you never want to count out, especially after you've seen the success of brock >anne>purdy a 2024 marks the ten year anniversary of levi's stadium, home of the 40 niners, and we asked lindsay about the past decade here and what it's meant to the team. >i think that the fans that come to levi's stadium for all the 40 niners games and all the other events outside of football that have made levi's stadium really a cornerstone of the bay area, santa clara. and i know that the 40 niners in particular love that home field advantage. it's fantastic i've gotten to experience it for the last two seasons. i'm biased, but best fanbase in the nfl. certainly one of the loudest and even when they travel outside of levi's stadium, it's really awesome to see how much red there is in the stands, really, in any of the stadiums
3:19 pm
across the league so shout out to the fayetteville for really making levi's stadium feel like >anne>home and levi's stadium is also going to be the host site for the 2026 world cup, and home of super bowl 60. in 2026. well, you heard lindsey talk about the strength of 40 niners fans coming up. we're going to meet a few of them. part of our red and gold fan club. >it's been a pleasure to stand stern grove festival presents a free concert featuring jazz and funk legend herbie hancock and the all star ensemble the sfjazz collective. sunday at two. stream or watch it live on kpix.com or textplus

a couple of the players have had some big positive changes at home in the off season. our vern glenn asked them about it. >here's a battle that you're learning how to climb each and every day your dad. now what's fatherhood been like? yeah, man. it's been amazing. it's something that you can't really put into words it's been the biggest blessing for me and my wife to welcome my baby boy into this world. and he's just brought so much joy and happiness to us. and it's just giving me another, another thing to play for, right? is he lifting his head? is he flipping over? is he, is he, is he? he's already given clothes left clothes right. cause you know what i'm saying. he over there and i'm we're practicing the linebacker stance. we might practice a little hand in the dirt, have nick bosa come over and teach him a little pass rush, you know, because he is starting to to bulk up a little bit. so yeah he's he's doing great man you see this 27 years of being handcuffed? yes, sir yeah. how how how how was that transition been? yeah, it's been great.
