donald trump's campaign says it was hacked as the former president turns up the heat on kamala harris accusing her of copy cat tactics. more trouble in the tropics. as the east coast dries out from debbie, another disturbance is now developing in the atlantic and could become the fifth named storm of the season. the latest track and the potential impact to the u.s. and au revoir paris. tm cruise drops into the olympics closing ceremony with a spectacular high-flying stunt with a mission from the next host city, los angeles. good morning, i'm shanelle kaul in for anne-marie green. there are new concerns this morning over cyber threats to the 2024 presidential race after donald trump's campaign said it was hacked. this as the former president goes on the offensive blasting kamala harris for a new campaign promise. cbs' carissa lawson joins us now here in new york with the latest

on the race for the white house. hey, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. donald trump's presidential campaign is suggesting iran was involved in stealing and distributing sensitive internal documents. the claim comes a day after microsoft issued a report detailing foreign agents' attempts to interfere in this year's presidential campaign. meanwhile, a new claim from donald trump against kamala harris as she takes a similar position to her rival in an effort to win over service workers. >> wow. >> reporter: over the weekend former president donald trump said his campaign was hacked, and he blamed iran. both "politico" and "the washington post" reported that they had received what appeared to be internal trump documents including research on trump's running mate, j.d. vance, from an anonymous email account. >> what i think we're seeing is the iranian information operations. >> reporter: on sunday trump falsely claimed kamala harris claims were fake and made this pledge over the weekend.

>> when i am president we will continue our fight for working families of america. including to raise the minimum wage -- [ cheers ] -- and eliminate taxes on tips for service and hospitality workers. [ cheers ] >> reporter: the trump-vance campaign called harris a copy cat for echoing trump's earlier proposal to end taxes on tips. meanwhile, vance voiced support for a democratic policy, the child tax credit, on cbs' "face the nation" sunday. >> we should expand the child tax credit. if you think about what -- >> you and the biden administration agree on the tax credit? >> we think it should be bigger. >> reporter: sunday joe biden gave his first interview since dropping out of the 2024 races. >> a number of my democratic colleagues in the house and senate thought that i was going to hurt them in the races. i thought it would be a real distraction. >> reporter: the president also said he plans to campaign for harris.

so far iran's representative to the united nations has ignored requests from cbs news for comments on the trump campaign's hacking claims. tonight former president donald trump is expected to do an interview with elon musk, the owner of x, the platform formerly known as twitter. back to you. >> carissa lawson in new york, thank you. people along the east coast are cleaning up from the remnants of what was once hurricane debby. at least seven people were killed in the storm. it inundated parts of new york, pennsylvania, and new england with rain, powerful winds, and flash flooding friday prompting evacuations and rescues. already waterlogged parts of the north and south carolina could also see more flash flooding in the coming days due to more thunderstorms. meanwhile, another weather system is now forming in the atlantic. what's expected to become tropical storm ernesto is moving toward the caribbean islands. it could approach puerto rico

and the virgin islands and the dominican republic midweek. forecasters say there could be heavy rain, flash floods, and mudslides. it might also strengthen and threaten bermuda as a hurricane. the u.s. is strengthening its military might in the middle east as israel waits on retaliatory strikes both by iran and hezbollah following the assassinations of top terror leaders. defense secretary lloyd austin ordered a guided missile submarine to the region and is telling the "uss abraham lincoln" strike group to sail more quickly. the "lincoln" was expected to arrive by the end of the month. meanwhile, hamas appeared to push back against resuming negotiations on any new cease-fire proposals. the terror group says it won't take part in any further negotiations with israel and is calling on mediators to work toward implementing the cease-fire plan agreed upon last month.

for the first time ukraine's president volodymer zelenskyy confirmed his forces have moved into russian territory for battle. meanwhile, zelenskyy says russian forces started a fire at the russian-controlled zaporizhzhia power plant in southern ukraine. he posted a video showing thing smoke coming out of one of the plant's cooling towers. cbs' ian lee has more. >> reporter: russian planes bombing russian territory, targeting ukrainian troops. six days ago kyiv launched the largest attack in russia since world war ii, pushing up to 20 miles into the kursk region. it caught the kremlin off guard. this video taken by a ukrainian unit shows a large number of russian soldiers surrendering. another online post appears to show a destroyed russian military convoy. ukrainian president volodymer zelenskyy broke his silence

saying the operation is to restore justice and to push the war on the aggressor's territory. if you believe moscow's top general, everything is under control. russia declared a state of emergency in the affected region while also releasing videos of it striking back, like this one reportedly hitting a ukrainian tank. at a security council meeting on thursday, russian president vladimir putin downplayed the invasion, calling the fight a counterterrorism operation. local russian residents posted their own videos begging the kremlin for help. moscow says it's evacuated more than 76,000 civilians out while moving heavy armor and missile launchers in. on the other side of the border in ukraine, russia continues its indiscriminate attacks. on friday a missile hit a supermarket near the front line in the donetsk region killing more than a dozen people. ian lee, cbs news, london.

the bodies of all 62 people on board the plane that crashed in brazil have been recovered. the voepasse plane plummeted to the ground and caught fire in a residential area outside sao polo. two engines from the plane were removed from the crash site, and authorities say the plane's black boxes were recovered and analyzed. there was a severe icing warning in the area when the plane went down. coming up this hour, deadly house explosion. what caused a massive blast that killed two people in maryland. and taylor swift's surprise to fans in vienna after her concerts there were canceled last week. st week.

"the baltimore sun" reports two people were killed in a house explosion in bel air, maryland. officials there say one of those killed yesterday was a baltimore gas and electric contractor who was working on an electrical problem at the home at the time. the other is believed to be the homeowner. at least 16 other nearby homes were damaged, and 12 families have been displaced. firefighters were on their way to the scene for a report of a gas leak when the home exploded. an investigation is now under way. the "honolulu star advertiser" says the fbi and maui police department are

investigating an explosion on the hawaiian island that damaged an suv. authorities say an improvised explosive device that was placed in a trash can detonated thursday as the vehicle was passing by. the woman driving was not seriously injured, and it happened hours after officials discovered several ieds left in the area that authorities rendered safe. a search is now under way for the unidentified bomber. and "the austin american statesman" says the city of uvalde, texas, released items from the school shooting including documents, texts, and audio and video recordings. >> having a problem getting [ bleep ] -- >> it's locked. he stopped. >> one video shows disgraced former uvalde school district police chief pete arredondo during the chaos at robb elementary school. he was fired for his lack of response to the shooting and later indicted along with another former officer on

office showdown and summer tourism is booming. here's matt pieper with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: stocks closed a wild whipsaw week for wall street with modest gains. the dow gained 51, nasdaq was up 85, s&p gaining 24 points. thousands of cans of perrigo powered baby formula is being recalled because of elevated levels of vitamin d. the formula is sold by heb grocery and cvs health stores in 12 states. the impacted products have best-buy dates of november, 2025. popular vacation destinations near the beach are back to pre-pandemic levels, so say the small business owners from the jersey shore all the way to myrtle beach. those on the lower end of the income scale are sticking to their budgets. according to u.s. travel association's forecast, 2024 tourism volume is expected to top 2019's numbers for the first time since the pandemic began. and hollywood power couple ryan reynolds and blake lively's movies went head to head this

here's a look at here's a look at the forecast in some cities around the country. ♪ the paris olympics went out with a bang as fireworks engulfed paris' national stadium. it was a night of pomp and pageantry. the paris 2024 closing ceremony celebrated the amazing moments that we saw during these past two weeks, as well as a breathtaking hand-over to los angeles for the next games in 2028. it was a mission possible for tom cruise who swooped into the parisian stadium to take the olympic flag back to los angeles.

the night also saw sensational it wases on the stage including "the star-spangled banner" by h.e.r. then it shifted to los angeles where snoop dogg, billie eilish, and the red hot chili peppers were there ready to entertain the crowds gathered in long beach. swimmer katie ledecky and rower nick mead celebrated the team usa as the closing ceremony flag bearers. and team usa topped the medal count with 126 in all, but it was a draw in the gold medal race with the u.s. and china taking 40 each. but team usa could have won more in the works. gymnast jordan chiles was ordered to return her bronze medal because of a technicality. but usa gymnastics says it has video evidence and plans to fight this decision. cbs' jamie yuccas has more. >> reporter: a controversial end to the games for american gymnast jordan chiles. the international olympic committee stripped her of her bronze medal in the floor exercise. initially chiles finished fifth in monday's competition.

her coach appealed saying her athletic difficulty score was under credited, and her score was adjusted. but olympic arbitrators ruled the appeal missed the one-minute deadline. the medal will be given to team romania's ana barbosu. usa gymnastics said they were devastated by the ruling. teammate simone biles wrote "sending you so much love, jordan. keep your chin up, olympic champ. we love you." the u.s. olympic committee plans to appeal. with a nail-biter of an ending, team usa women's basketball won their eighth consecutive gold medal defeating host country france 67-66. >> glad the usa came out on top. >> reporter: also setting records, the u.s. women's national team. >> it's a dream come true to win a gold medal. >> reporter: in his first major tournament with her players, soccer coach emma hayes led them to the fifth gold medal. why is the love and camaraderie of the team so important to you? >> i think when you enjoy being around each other, when you play
