america, america, i gave my best to you. political swan song. president biden touts his accomplishments on the first night of the democratic national convention, calling on the part to unite just one month after they turned against him as he passes the torch to his vice president. all right. good morning to you all. i'm errol barnett in for anne-marie green today. it was a night to celebrate the end of one political career and usher in a new start, one that could break through the glass ceiling. a long list of high-profile speakers took to the stage at the dnc from former secretary of state hillary clinton to new york representative alexandria ocasio-cortez as well as georgia senator raphael warnock as well as dr. jill biden.

president biden's daughter introduced him to a raucous crowd. at one point some broke through a security fence. cbs's caroline cummings is in the windy city with a recap of night one and what we can expect on day two. caroline, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, errol. so day two of the democratic national convention here in chicago is about to get ungds way here. the theme is a bold vision for america's future. former president barack obama is expected to speak. but last night vice president kamala harris and her running mate tim walz were looking on as the party paid tribute to president joe biden. >> this is going to be a great week. >> reporter: vice president kamala harris made a surprise appearance to help kick off the democratic national convention in chicago, but night one themed "for the people" also belonged to president joe biden. president biden was emotional as he hugged his daughter ashley

and took the podium to address the public's reaction. president biden's speech came a month after he dropped out of the 2024 race and endorsed harris. he touted their accomplishments and slammed the former gop opponent donald trump. >> the level of crime has dropped to the lowest level in 54 years and crime will keep coming down when we put a prosecutor in the office instead of a convicted felon. >> reporter: celebrities, union leaders, and elected officials also took the stage on night one. former presidential candidate hillary clinton. >> the future is in our grasp. let's go win it. >> reporter: there were also sobering moments. several women shared heartbreaking moments where abortion is restricted. >> because of louisiana's abortion ban, no one would confirm that i was miscarrying. i was in pain, bleeding so much

well including pennsylvania. he spoke to factory workers yesterday about the economy. and in an exclusive interview with caitlin huey-burns, he was asked about his repeated insults of his opponent, vice president kamala harris. >> you have criticized her appearance, you've criticized her intelligence. is that the message to win over those moderate voters that you're going to need in the middle? >> no, i don't think so. i think the message is what a bad job they've done. if you look at this economy, if you look at inflation, and, you know, i love this country. i have to do what it takes to win. >> reporter: why insult her intelligence? >> well, i have to -- well, i don't think she ee is a very bright person. i do feel that. i think that's right. i think i am a very bright person. >> trump heads to michigan today while his running mate jd vance stumps in wisconsin. u.s. intelligence officials say iran was behind the attack on donald trump's presidential campaign. this assessment from yesterday by the fbi and other federal

>> reporter: more than ten months into us real's war against hamas in gaza, u.s. secretary of state antony blinken with news of possible steps toward an end. >> israel accepts the bridging proposal, that he supports it. >> reporter: israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu accepting a plan presented by washington to bridge the divide between the two sides that so far blocked a cease-fire and hostage deal. >> it's now incumbent upon hamas to do the same. >> reporter: blinken didn't provide the details but the sticking demand is that israel demand to maintain control of the buffer zone along gaza's border to control the corridor. israel says hamas has tunnels for smuggling weapons. some experts say there is chance for compromise. >> america is trying for some technical fixes. there'll be sensors. israel can watch the feed. i think were ooh close to some sort of agreement.

>> reporter: hamas says their goal is to hide obstacles that israel is creating. there's a political firestorm in the u.s. blocks from the democratic national convention, small groups of palestinian protesters clashed with police. inside president biden acknowledged the losses on both sides. >> now, we'll keep working to bring hostages home and end the war in gaza and bring peace and security to the middle east. >> reporter: and later the struggles to end the fighting. >> we've goet to keep pushing. >> reporter: talks continue this week. blinken is set to meet with egyptian and qatari officials later today. errol. >> all right, jarred hill in new york. former new york congressman george santos pleaded guilty to two counts of federal fraud. santos admitted in court to aggravated identity theft, wire fraud, and o'crimes stemming from his 2022 campaign. the republican who was expelled

from the house last year, you may remember, had been facing 23 charges from political donors and lying to congress. santos, who had always maintained his innocence, spoke after court and acknowledged his crimes. >> my actions have caused disappointment, frustration, and a loss of faith in me. for that i'm truly sorry. i'm dedicated to making amends for the wrongs i have committed. i understand there are legal consequences for my actions. >> as far as those consequences, santos faces up to eight years in prison and will likely have to pay at least $373,000 in restitution. folks over in connecticut are assessing the damage this morning after sunday night's torrential rains and historic flooding led to two deaths and hundreds of evacuations. governor ned lamont declared a state of emergency after a foot of rain turned streets into rivers and trapped people in cars and buildings as well. the bodies of two women were

6 one body has been recovered. tech magnate mike lynch who was acquitted in june and his daughter are among the missing. jonathan bloomer is also missing. officials say bad weather is hampering search efforts. a washington, d.c., city council member is accused of accepting bribes and a key decision on the high school shooting case. these are some of the stories on the morning news stand this morning. a texas jury found the parents of an alleged high school student not liable for the shooting. eight students and a teacher were killed in a shooting at a santa fe high school. the victims' families accused the then 17-year-old's parents of failing to address his mental health issues in not securing their weapons. the accused shooter was declared incompetent to stand criminal trial after being charged with murder. "the washington post" says a washington, d.c., city council member is accused of taking more than $150,000 in bribes. federal prosecutors say trayvon white sr. took the money in

exchange for pressuring d.c. government employees to steer city contracts for violence intervention services to two companies. he was arrested on sunday and appeared in court yesterday. he faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted. and the "atlanta journal-constitution" says the georgia state election board created new rules creating additional steps before election results can be certified. the 3-2 vote in favor included three republican board members who were recently praised by donald trump. the new rules are necessary to ensure votes are properly counted. critics say it could disenfranchise voters or create decertification delays if the county election boards don't like the results. all right. still ahead for you, remembering the king of daytime talk. a look back at the life and career of pioneering talk show host phil donahue. a look.

tributes are pouring in following the death sunday of legendary daytime talk show host phil donahue. he was a tv pioneer, especially when he made his audience a part of the show. norah o'donnell takes a look at his life and legacy. >> reporter: audiences were drawn to phil donahue's folksy style, riveted by his interviews with the famous and the infamous. crowned the king of daytime talk, donahue was the first to make audiences part of the show. >> are you married because i've got a girl for you. >> reporter: allowing them to ask questions. "the phil donahue show" made its debut in 1967 in dayton, ohio, the start of a 29-year run tackling a range of topics. his show's pioneering format paved the way for scores of daytime hosts including oprah winfrey who posted today on social media there wouldn't have been an oprah show without phil donahue. in may donahue received the presidential medal of freedom.
