aggressive approach to clearing homeless encampment choosing compassion over convenience. from kpix this is the late news with sara donchey on cbs news bay area. i'm juliette goodrich in for sara tonight. it was the midwest night in the spotlight of the democratic national convention as vice presidential candidate tim walz and his family celebrated at center stage after he officially accepted the democratic nomination, explain the situation in the way only walz can. it is the fourth quarter. we are down a field goal, but we are on offense and we got the ball. we are driving down the field. and boy do we have the right team. >> all right, let's go over to ryan yamamoto live in chicago for us. ryan, you were in the room, you heard it all, what was the atmosphere like as

people got their first taste of tim walz or i should say coach walz. >> it was fiery, electric here at the dnc where most of the first three days or first two days it has been all about california especially with the bay area kamala harris running for president. but, today, california moved over, gave minnesota the spotlight as tim walz made his case. >> minnesota takeover in chicago on day three of the democratic national convention. governor tim walz runningmate of kamala harris addressing the party, addressing america. >> the family down the road may not look like you, they may not love like you do, but they are your neighbors. you and look out for them and they looked

out for you. >> reporter: a chance for california delegates to see and hear the governor in person for the very first time. >> i think he is just so down-to-earth. he is like everybody's dad, everybody's coach, he reminds me of the coach i had in high school. >> reporter: no surprise for lee. >> it is tim walz'stage tonight. >> reporter: he wanted americans to know what minnesotans have known. calling walz the perfect person to join the ticket. >> you get two individuals that truly care about the country. coming together, they might have different styles puthey meld well together. i think you have seen the friendship they already have that is blossoming. it is really exciting. >> former san francisco supervisor david campos agrees calling the pair a perfect match. >> it works because they are authentic. it is the authenticity. it is an authenticity that recognizes the gravity of the times, you

know, that we have so much at stake. >> because at stake more than just the white house [music] day three belonging to tim walz, day four, kamala harris will get to make her case to america. >> reporter: for many delegates it is an opportunity to witness potential history. >> absolutely is. she is going to shatter the glass ceiling not just break it but shatter it. >> tomorrow, we get ready to wrap up day four, the final day of the convention here at the united center in chicago. with all of the moments of the past three days it all comes to a ray end tomorrow night. i tell you what, this place went wild, governor walz more than just a governor. more than a politician, you can understand why a lot of people here and a lot of minnesotans call him coach walz. >> yes. did not want to clear

out tonight either, i understand. >> no. this was their night. minnesota took over the convention center. the last couple of days it was california, the bay area, tonight, it was about minnesota. >> all right, we will let you know, appreciate all of your stories, working hard there with your photographer. we will see you tomorrow first thing. all right, ryan, thank you very much. some of the other big names that took the stage included former speak of the house nancy pelosi, former president bill clinton, pete buttigieg and oprah winfrey who asked voters not to vote for a person but for a platform for an idea. >> let us choose loyalty to the constitution over loyalty to any individual. and let us choose optimism over cynicism. because that is the best of america. >> yes, politics at its worse

can be demeaning but does not have to be. at its best it can be empowering, uplifting [music] ♪ or a friendly word ♪ pick up the phone. >> reporter: and, of course, not just speeches tonight. oakland native sheila e. and john legend paying a tribute to prince ahead of walz speech. one of california connections highlighted this year. harris california bay area roots already been a big talking point in the campaign. at the convention especially. according to a los angeles times poll, much of america sees those connections as a negative not a positive. as you can see, with half of the row respondents saying it is too liberal. harris and walz will hope they can reverse them. as for the support in the bay area

voters tell us they are excited after tonight's slowing but not taking anything for -- showing but not taking anything for granted. >> reporter: this is where the watch party took place. there is a countdown to election day. many of the people we talked with tonight say they felt energized by the speeches. they also know there is a lot of work to do in the next 76 days. >> reporter: resinating with voters as spoker bill clinton, oprah winfrey and house speaker nancy pelosi. >> salute, complete fan of that woman so anything that she says is just gold for me. >> reporter: pelosi not just getting an applause from the crowd at the convention but here as well as she addressed californians. there was one other woman that shined in the spotlight. >> oprah winfrey stole the show. >> oprah did a great job. she

did a really good job. i loved oprah. >> reporter: those in this room lean left when it comes to politics. this is his first time he will be able to vote in a presidential election. while he admits he is swept up in the excitement of the convention, he does have a concern. >> when it comes to defining kamala, it is lacking a very strict policy platform. more clear policy platform would be something that i like to see. >> reporter: the night gave voters of a glimpse of who harris is. it is what she represents that voters are excited for the future. many feel a lot is at stake come november. >> democracy on the line. if you really look at it, it is a genuine possibility. >> a lot of the messages i am hearing tonight is just about how close this election is going to be and exuberance is great but we really have to work hard and not take anything

for granted. >> stay with cbs news bay area for the final day of the dnc tomorrow, including complete live coverage when vice president harris takes the stage and officially accepts her party's nomination. as democrats take the stage in chicago, former president donald trump and runningmate j.d. vance continue on their trail across key swing states. today, trump held his first outdoor rally since the attempt on his life last month. tomorrow, he will hold an event focusing on immigration in arizona, another key swing state. all right, back here in the bay area, the city of san rafael is taking a different approach to the homelessness crisis establishing a sanctioned encampment with space for 47 tents. the city said it will be gated. 24/7 security and offer residents rest rooms, showers, and a pet area. city officials will also work with people at the encampment to get them in more

permanent housing. the limited number of spaces has some concerned. >> as you can see people are already living here. and, so, where would they put me? even if they got 40 apartments for people to move into, where would the 40 apartments come from? where in this community has 40 vacant apartments. >> the sanction encampment program is slated to stay open for 1 1/2 while others are set to be taken down. still ahead tonight at 11:00, oakland neighborhood says they found a way to stop sideshows but the city says, not so fast . >> that is what it used to be, oakland took matters in our own hands, make sured our community, our youth was protected. then, court staff in san francisco demanding changes after they say a worker shortage forced dozens of cases to be thrown out. the fog is taking back over

this evening after a pretty normal late august day. temperatures in the 60s, 70s, 80s, like yesterday, no 90s and a bigger drop in temperatures kicks in tomorrow. details on the big warm up that will follow that next week coming up in the first alert forecast

i. a neighborhood in oakland decided to take matters in their own hands. building barricades out of tires and installing their own speed

bumps. but, as katie neilson reports their solution did not go over well with the city. >> reporter: this home surveillance video shows what people in the area deal with all of the type. cars doing burn outs and drifting through the intersections. >> oh, terrible. so bad. >> reporter: she lives just a couple houses down from this intersection at east 21st street and 19th avenue in the san antonio neighborhood of oak land. she says cars routinely run this top sign and speedup and down the street. one time narrowly missing her daughter in the cross walk. >> this one guy come and run over, she runs if she don't run maybe they -- yeah . >> a few weeks ago neighbors got together to put massive tired filled with dirt and

concrete into the medians along east 21st street. a home made form of diy traffic combing. people in the area said it worked. it stopped the sideshow activity and much of the speeding. after an accident when a car hit one of the tires and flipped on its side the city said they had to go. in a statement from the director of oakland's department of transportation he said the community is fed up and justifiably so with the sideshows in their community. the community was upset that the city removed their self-installed traffic calming. i directed the removal due to the risk that it created to the traveling public. what is left of the neighborhood traffic crisis are still sitting on the sidewalk, city leaders met with neighbors to talk about adding speed butches or traffic circles. some say they are tired of waiting for the city to act. >> that is what oakland used to be. we took matters into our own hands, made sure our

communities and our youth was protected. i have no issue of the community stepping up. >> it is bad because if we call the police they say, they can do nothing. let's get to our all important first alert weather with paul heggen filling us in on what we are being told is roller coaster, no, weather whiplash. >> cool weather, taste of fall. first day of fall is on us a month away. a preview for the next couple of days. here is what you need to know heading through that. late system on its way impacting the northwest, cooler with coastal and bayside drizzle. a few light showers in the forecast on friday. mainly for the north bay. still a question mark after that. and then drier and warmer forecast in store for us as we head into the weekend. let's take that out of the way. i will step out of here and we will talk about the evolution of the rain chances as they try to move towards the bay area as we head to the end

of the workweek. mainly what you are going to see is more cloud cover lingering longer and on friday and inland parts of the bay area, fog and low clouds in the morning more stubborn, a little drizzle possible. not quite concentrated enough. you will see a few green blips here. the atmosphere trying to get its act together and produce the showers. it will stay off to the north of us. if the storm system is just a little closer to us that would send the better chance of showers into the pay area. something that we are going to be watching heading through the next several days. right now, not seeing much fog. we are seeing plenty of fog swallowing up downtown san francisco. temperatures at the moment, running in the 60s but down to 59 degrees already in the city. everybody else's temperatures are still in the lower to middle 60s. looking at the future cast fog map tomorrow morning it does not slow any visibilities inland that are close to 0 but the low cloud

cover is over head. even if it is not sitting at ground level. the clouds will be stubborn, not backing out of the valleys until we get farther into the morning and the presence of the fog for longer in the daylight hours will slow down the warm up tomorrow. that will have an impact on how much the temperatures are going to get up closer to what is normal this time of the year and the answer is, pretty far away from normal for the middle of august. we will start in the santa clara valley. temperatures running 6-7 degrees above average. middle to upper 70s. biggest departure of temperatures, inland, east bay, 76 in livermore, 78 in concord, the normal high for both of the communities it is 88 degrees, 10-12 degrees below that. a mix of 60s and 70s around the bay and mostly 70s in the north bay as well which is unusually cool for this time of the year and friday, it is going to be a little cooler than that. looking at the 10 day outlook for liver more. you can see the roller coaster ride we are talking b. after a

couple cool days we climb. rapidly over the weekend with the temperatures by monday and tuesday, even wednesday, flirting with 100 degrees and then a retreat once again closer to normal temperatures for the last days of august. let's take a look at the seven-day outlook, hot weather is towards the tail end. the temperatures are going to be comfortably cool for the next couple of days then warm up dramatically through the weekend. inland, best chance of showers for the north bay, patches of drizzle, bayside, along the coast. cooler than average temperatures around the bay by monday, tuesday, wednesday, along the coast, cool, foggy, drizzle, damp conditions the next couple of days the temperatures in the lower to middle 70s by monday and tuesday with more sunshine breaking through next week as well. the gray skies will not last forever. >> all right, thank you. coming up after the break, fans becoming part owners of the oakland ballers what decisions will they actually help make? hmm.
