for more than 100 years ago. cbs' caroline cummings is joining us now from chicago with a wrap of harris' big night. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, anne-marie. yes, last night was the main event. it was vice president kamala harris accepting that democratic nomination for president. inside the united center this morning, you're hearing some people pop balloons, pick up confetti, marking the end of the democratic national convention and the beginning of the homestretch of the general election campaign. a historic night in chicago as vice president kamala harris accepted the 2024 democratic nomination for president. >> america, we are not going back. >> reporter: harris vowed to create an opportunity economy, push for a middle east cease-fire deal, and revive the failed bipartisan immigration bill. the former california attorney general also made her case against former president trump. >> in many ways donald trump is an unserious man.

to that rumor mill, we are seeing that actually overnight last night robert f. kennedy withdrew from the arizona ballot. the state was critical to biden's win in 2020 and is shaping up to be a serious player for both harris and trump this time around. in battleground arizona, former president trump is taking the fight for the white house to america's southern border. >> we will seal the border, stop the invasion and launch the biggest deportation effort in american history. >> reporter: cbs news polling shows 87% of likely voters see immigration as a major factor for their vote this election. trump using the issue to sharply attack vice president kamala harris. >> we had a border czar who was the border czar, she loved the title but didn't want to do the work because she's lazy. in the biden administration sh root causes of immigration in central america, not securing the border itself. >> she gets in, you will have coming across this border over

the next four years 100 million people from all over the world. and they'll be from prisons and jails. >> reporter: what trump leaves out is that illegal border crossing numbers are at the lowest point in four years, due in part to executive actions taken by president biden in june. from the democratic national convention, harris accused trump of contributing to the crisis by urging republicans to kill a bipartisan border deal. >> donald trump believes a border deal would hurt his campaign. so he ordered his allies in congress to kill the deal. [ boos ] well, i refuse to play politics with our security. >> reporter: trump says the bill wasn't strong enough. meanwhile, amid the criticism, questions swirled over whether he'll pick you up an endorsement from independent candidate robert f. kennedy jr., who may suspend his campaign today. former president trump said the

speech was non-specific, too short because, quote, her ideas are bad. >> jarred hill in new york, thank you so much. donald trump was in southern arizona yesterday. there was a manhunt for a man accused of posting death threats against the former president on social media. officials say 66-year-old robert lee syvrud was detained in the afternoon but did not describe the alleged threats. trump's security has been beefed up since the attempted assassination in pennsylvania. and the biden administration is sending about $125 million in new military aid to ukraine as kyiv intensifies its attacks against russia. look at this huge smoke plume after a drone strike on a critical military airbase in southwest russia. and another ukrainian drone strike hit a cargo ferry loaded with fuel tanks at a key port used for moving freight into crimea. cbs' ian lee is on the ground in ukraine bringing up an up-close

"the las vegas review journal" says prosecutors cross-examined a former nevada politician charged with murdering an investigation ive reporter. robert telles is accused of stabbing "journal" reporter jeff german to death in 2022 outside the journalist's home. german had written articles critical of his conduct. yesterday telles testified that he did not know how his dna was found underneath the victim's fingernails. he claims he was framed and the evidence was planted. cnn says a second former memphis police officer is changing his plea to guilty in the beating death of tyre nichols. emmitt martin is scheduled to appear in court as part of an agreement with prosecutors. he and four officers were

indicted last year on federal charges including civil rights violations. they were also charged in state court with murder. nichols died three days after he was beaten by police during a traffic stop last year. and "the arkansas democrat gazette" says the state supreme court upheld a decision by state officials to reject a proposed amendment to expand abortion access. the court upheld an earlier decision by the arkansas secretary of state to reject thousands of signed petitions calling for an abortion rights measure to be on the november ballot. it would have scaled back arkansas' strict abortion law that bans the procedure at any time during pregnancy unless the mother's life is in danger due it a medical emergency. up next, a bear scare. what happened when an unwelcome visitor appeared out of nowhere. visitor appeared out of nowhere.
