cross-border barrage. israel and hezbollah militants in lebanon exchange attacks jolting a region already on edge for a wider war. the battle for campaign cash. kamala harris' campaign riding a wave of momentum following the democratic convention, while donald trump sharpens his attacks trying to blunt her rise. double trouble. two natural disasters. a hurricane wreaking havoc on hawaii and hikers trapped after flash flooding turns deadly in the grand canyon. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. we start with the middle east where nerves are frayed after a dramatic but contained escalation that stopped short of an all-out war. israel and the powerful hezbollah terror group in lebanon both declaring victory after exchanging their heaviest strikes since the war in gaza began. israel says it fired first to stop a major attack.

this as the latest round of cease-fires and hostage talks between israel and hamas ended without a deal. cbs' carissa lawson is following all the developments for us. good morning. >> reporter: and there are a lot. there have been almost daily exchanges of fire across the israel-lebanon border since the war in gaza started between israel and hamas in october, but this latest exchange was the worst and most dramatic so far, raising global concerns that the war could explode across the middle east region, an ominous thought. high-level negotiations in cairo toward a cease-fire and hostage exchange between israel and hamas failed to produce a breakthrough over the weekend. the lower-level talks are expected to continue. it comes after israel and iran-backed hezbollah fighters in lebanon on sunday had their biggest exchange of fire since conflict broke out in the region ten months ago, briefly raising fears of an all-out war. >> it is incumbent on all

parties in the region to work toward deescalation and stability. >> reporter: israel says it launched a preemptive strike using around 100 military planes that destroyed thousands of hezbollah rocket launchers in lebanon. >> we carried the real-time operation in order to degrade those capabilities that were about to be launched to israel. we were successful. >> reporter: hours later israel said it intercepted hundreds of rockets and drones launched by hezbollah. the militant group says it's -- its counterattack was in retaliation for the recent assassination of one of its founders. things appear to have calmed down for now with both sides claiming victory after hitting what they claimed were military targets. though israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu said this was, quote, not the end of the story. white house officials say president joe biden has been monitoring the middle east situation, and on sunday the pentagon said that defense secretary lloyd austin ordered two u.s. aircraft carriers to

remain in the region for deterrence. three deaths were confirmed in lebanon, and israel says one member of its navy was killed and two others injured after debris from an interceptor hit a navy vessel. since both sides are claiming victory, it is a signal of their desire to stop short of an all-out war for now. carissa lawson, cbs news. >> let's hope so. thank you very much. coming up on "cbs mornings," former national security adviser and cbs news contributor h.r. mcmaster joins us to talk about the growing tensions in the middle east and if he thinks the u.s. could become directly involved in the conflict. and now to the race for the white house. the harris and trump campaigns, they are gearing up for some grassroots outreach. cbs' skyler henry is tracking all of that from washington.

>> reporter: the tim walz and hrris campaign riding a wave of momentum following the democratic national convention. the campaign saying it's broken fundraising records. $540 million raised in the month since it launched. democrats say it's adding a jolt in congressional races. >> coming out of the dnc and for the last now month plus, we have just been such energy, such enthusiasm, such true joy and optimism. >> reporter: despite the energy, now a call for detail on foreign policy. >> i hope very much that the conclusion that will be reached is that netanyahu and his right-wing extremist government which has received tens of billions of dollars of aid from the u.s. should not continue to receive that aid unless there is a radical change in their policies. >> reporter: former president donald trump sharpening attacks over democratic policy in the middle east. recent polls show a tight race, especially in the seven battleground states. the trump-vance ticket plans on blitzing the states this week as their campaign searches for the right tone. >> i'm going to say things from time to time that people disagree with. i'm a real person. i'm going to make jokes. i'm going to say things

sarcastically. what's important is that we focus on the policy. >> reporter: this week trump heads back to michigan twice while making a stop in pennsylvania on friday. harris is planning on another bus tour. this time across the state of georgia. skyler henry, cbs news, the white house. hurricane hone lashed parts of hawaii with torrential rain and damaging winds. the storm passed just south of hawaii yesterday triggering flash floods and causing some roads to close. hone had top winds of 85 mile-per-hour as it swirled slowly past the big island. while hurricane hone begins to move west of hawaii, behind it is hurricane gilma, expected to pass north of hawaii later this week. the body of an arizona woman who went missing after a flash flood at grand canyon national park has been recovered. chenoa nickerson was hiking along havasu creek when the flood hit thursday trapping tourists around beaver falls.

the arizona national guard was called in and helped rescue more than 100 members of the havasupai tribe and hikers including an ohio couple celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary. >> we decided to do a day hike to beaver falls, and that's when it all hit. >> we got to high ground, but where we were the trail was wiped out going back to camp. and we couldn't go forward anywhere because the grounds were flooded. >> the havasupai tribe's reservation is one of the most remote in the continental u.s., accessible only by foot, mule, or helicopter. and breaking overnight, at least one person is dead, another hospitalized and two more are missing after an ice cave partially collapsed in iceland. four people on a group tour of a glacier in southeastern iceland were hit by ice. police say about 25 tourists from several countries were exploring the ice caves. the rescue operation was paused after dark due to dangerous

conditions, and it is resuming this morning. and this is the last unofficial week of summer as we count down to the labor day weekend. the tsa is expecting a busy weekend at airports following a summer of record travel. cbs' kris van cleave reports. >> reporter: naveen chopra is hoping to beat the labor day rush by squeezing in one last summer trip with his family now, trading the blistering heat of phoenix for calgary. >> before the kids go back into college, just having time before everyone's back in offices and school. >> reporter: aaa says domestic travel will be the focus this labor day weekend, trending up 9% over last year. the cost to fly is down about 6%, and gas prices are roughly 44 cents a gallon cheaper than this time last year. united airlines expects friday, august 30th, to be its busiest day of the long holiday weekend. >> overall this summer has been busiest than last summer. >> reporter: aaa says the top destination -- seattle. driven by a nearly 30% surge in

ryan evans was part of a six-person "reuters" crew staying at the hotel when it was hit by the missile saturday. two members of the team were injured, including one seriously. evans, a former british soldier, was a safety adviser to journalists around the world. the bbc says a man surrendered and confessed to a mass stabbing attack in germany. three people were killed and eight others injured friday during a festival marking the 650th anniversary of the city of solingen. prosecutors say the syrian man was motivated by the idealogy of the islamic state extremist group which claimed responsibility for the attack. a 15-year-old boy who allegedly knew about the attack in advance was also arrested. and the "associated press" says french authorities arrested the founder and ceo of a messaging app "telegram" at a paris airport according to french media. billionaire pavel durov was arrested, taken into custody saturday after his private plane landed on an arrest warrant

s&p 500 picked up 63 points. seattle-tacoma international airport is still dealing with system outages after an apparent cyberattack over the weekend. websites, emails, and phone services were all impacted. hundreds of flights were also delayed or canceled as a result. the baggage sorting system is also not fully operational, so many checked bags are missing their flights. no word on when things will return to normal. and subway is joining other fast food chains in cutting prices. starting today footlong sandwiches will cost just $6.99. customers must order through the app or at subway.com to get the deal. it runs through september 8th. in a sleepy summer weekend at the box office, "holdovers" reigned supreme as the newcomers landed without a flash.
