donald trump videos stirred new fallout from his visit to the nation's most hallowed burial ground for our fallen heroes. new evidence. the fbi revealing new photos and had details about the assassination attempt on donald trump. why did the gunman choose that rally, and was he acting alone? disturbing dirt. what inspectors found inside a deli meat plant linked to the largest listeria outbreak in the u.s. in a decade. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. the fbi is revealing new details about the assassination attempt against former president donald trump calling the rally a target of opportunity. officials say despite nearly 1,000 interviews, hundreds of hours of video, and a deep dive bo the gunman's social media and encrypted accounts, they still have not uncovered a possible motive. cbs' scott macfarlane has the new photos from the investigation. >> reporter: when he opened fire toward the podium at former

president donald trump, thomas crooks used this gun and fired eight shots. he climbed this air conditioning unit on the right to get to the roof roughly a football field length away from the stage. the fbi revealed more of the timeline. crooks got atop the building at 6:05 p.m., moved along the roof from 6:05 to 6:08 before firing bullets. a local sniper fired once and so did a secret service sniper who fired one shot which struck crooks in the face and killed him. the fbi also released an image of two explosives crooks kept in his car nearby but which hadn't been turned into the on position. >> we believe the subject engaged in detailed attack planning well in advance of the campaign rally. >> reporter: including the fbi says by searching for schedules for trump and president biden for information about the republican and democratic national conventions, searched for how to make a bomb from fertilizer, and how do remote detonators work. >> when this event was

announced, the trump rally was announced early in july. he became hyper-focused on that specific event and looked at it as a target of opportunity. >> reporter: they say he did not have a left wing or right-wing idealogy and countering conspiracy theories, the fbi says there was no second shooter, no accomplice. so far, no clear motive. in a new tv interview, trump fuels conspiracy theories, accusing the president and vice president of putting him in danger. >> they were making it very difficult to have proper staffing in terms of secret service. >> reporter: the then-secret service director acknowledged failures and resigned ten days later. in the meantime, the secret service continues its own investigation into what went wrong and how to protect future events. scott macfarlane, cbs news, washington. now to the race for the white house. both kamala harris and donald trump are fanning out into battleground states today. questions continue to swirl around trump's visit to

arlington national cemetery from earlier this week. a sacred site where 400,000 veterans and their families are laid to rest and politics is banned. cbs' jarred hill joins us now with the latest developments. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. so the trump team is defending the use of a campaign photographer during his visit to arlington national cemetery. they were invited by at least one family, but the family of another fallen soldier has taken issue especially since trump has posted the video on his social media. meanwhile, vice president kamala harris is gearing up for a first for her campaign as she stumps in typically republican territory. today vice president kamala harris and running mate governor tim walz are set to sit for their first joint interview since becoming the democratic nominees, one day after they kicked off a bus tour in georgia. the pair stopping at a high school in rural hinesville. >> our country's counting on you, all of you. >> reporter: the latest cbs news poll shows that harris is now

neck and neck with former president donald trump in the battleground state. >> present arms -- >> reporter: meanwhile, trump campaigns in michigan and wisconsin today as scrutiny grows over his visit to arlington national cemetery. defense officials say some trump staffers got aggressive at both verbally and physically when a cemetery official tried to prevent them from bringing a campaign photographer on the grounds. federal law prohibits campaign or election-related activities in the cemetery, including photographers. the trump campaign says their photographer was invited by two of the families. yesterday in pennsylvania, trump's running mate senator j.d. vance defended the visit claiming the alleged altercation is a story created by the media and said this about harris who hasn't publicly commented on trump's visit -- >> she wants to yell at donald trump because he showed up, she can -- she can go to hell. >> reporter: a harris campaign spokesman called reports of the

incident, quote, pretty sad. so meanwhile former independent candidate rfk jr. is having a tough time getting his name off the ballot in several battleground states despite pulling out of the race and endorsing former president trump. one question with this, anne-marie, is whether his presence alone on those ballots could hurt either candidate come november. >> we will see. jarred hill in new york. thank you. overseas now, israeli forces have recovered the body of an israeli soldier killed during october 7th massacre and taken into gaza. his family requested his name not be published. meanwhile, the latest rescued hostage was released from the hospital and got a hero's welcome as he returned to his bedouin village. qaid farhan al kadi is revealing some of the horrific details of his time in captivity. he told the israeli tv station he underwent surgery to remove a bullet from his leg with almost no anesthesia, he watched

another hostage die next to him, there was very little food, and he was allowed to shower once a month. while fighting goes on in gaza, israel launched one of its largest military operations inside the occupied west bank raiding cities to root out militants they say were planning attacks. cbs' imtiaz tyab reports from the west bank. >> reporter: palestinian cities, towns, and refugee camps locked down and targeted in what israel is calling a counterterrorism operation. cellphone videos giving us a glimpse inside. according to local residents, there hasn't been an israeli military raid in the occupied west bank like this since the second intafada or uprising. at least ten people have been killed so far according to palestinian health officials including two of masood naja's children who were killed when their home was damaged in an explosion. "my wife went to the rooftop, and that's where she found or children," he weeps. in the village of beyt rima, young palestinians gather stones

and burn tires. over here in one of several villages in the israeli occupied west bank, palestinian villages where the situation is extremely tense following israel's decision to launch what's being described as one of the largest operations it's conducted here in the west bank in decades. it's in beyt rima where we meet shopkeeper osay al emawi. "the raids are ongoing," he says, "people are terrified. any house can be raided at any moment." and as the death toll continues to rise, the u.n. says since october 7th more than 620 palestinians have been killed in the west bank and east jerusalem alone. imtiaz tyab, cbs news, east jerusalem. if you're traveling this labor day weekend, it's going to be very crowded in many places. but you can also expect lower prices. the tsa says it's preparing for the busiest labor day travel period on record with about 17

million people screened at airports between today and next wednesday. the busiest day will be tomorrow, but air fares are about 5% lower than last year. it's the same story on the road. aaa says domestic travel over the holiday weekend is expected to be up 9% with gas prices down about 30 cents a gallon compared to last year. and if your travel takes you to the grand canyon this weekend, you may need to find another place to stay. hotels in the national park are being forced to close during one of their busiest times due to breaks in the only water pipeline that serves the popular tourist spot. the park will remain open during the day, and hotels outside the park are not impacted. it comes days after flash floods in the park killed one woman and trapped tourists prompts more than 100 rescues. coming up, a guilty verdict in the murder of a las vegas journalist. the harsh sentence handed down by the jury. and later, ruffling feathers. the unusual cause of a traffic jam in south dakota.

a powerful typhoon is lashing southern japan this morning. at least three people have been killed, dozens injured, and evacuation orders issued to millions of people. more than 250,000 homes have lost power, and flights and train service suspended. authorities say that it could be one of the strongest storms to ever hit the region. the typhoon is expected to impact other areas including tokyo. a california crime ring was busted, and a verdict and sentencing in a vegas murder trial. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the las vegas review-journal" reports former vegas elected official robert telles was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20 years for the murder of "journal" reporter jeff german. >> guilty of first-degree murder with use of a deadly weapon. >> telles hung his head in court yesterday as the jury's verdict

was read. german was stabbed to death outside his home two years ago. he had written multiple articles critical of telles' time in office while he lost his re-election bid. his lawyers say he plans to appeal. the "los angeles times" says a sophisticated southern california crime tourism ring stole millions in store heists and home burglaries across the country according to federal prosecutors. the ring was run out of a los angeles car rental business. authorities say the business rented out vehicles to crime tourism groups from south america and directed them to homes and businesses to steal luxury goods and people's credit cards and bank cards. six people including the owner of the business face multiple charges. and the "wall street journal" says french authorities filed preliminary charges against the founder and ceo of the messaging app telegram. pavel durov was released from custody yesterday after being arrested over the weekend at an airport outside paris. he was ordered not to leave

it's unclear how this could impact two upcoming spacex crude flights including the historic polaris dawn mission. troubling new details in the nationwide listeria outbreak linked to boar's head deli meat. shanelle kaul has that and more in today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: u.s. stocks closed lower wednesday with the dow snapping a three-day win streak. that index lost 159 points. the nasdaq was down 198, and the s&p 500 lost 33 points. federal health officials say at least 57 people have been hospitalized and at least nine people have now died from a listeria outbreak tied to recalled boar's head deli meats. it's the largest listeria outbreak since 2011, and cbs news has obtained documents showing federal inspectors flagged dozens of violations including mold, mildew, and insects at the plant in virginia linked to the recall. lego is going green.
