it's it's friday, august 30th, 2024. this is "cbs news mornings." defending her shifting stances. vice president kamala harris in her first major television interview insisting her values have not changed, while former president donald trump is wooing women voters.

his proposal for fertility treatments and what he said about a florida abortion rights measure. good morning, and good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. 67 days until election day. the polls are tightening, and the fight is on for every vote in the battleground states. vice president kamala harris and her running mate tim walz barnstorming georgia's rural counties after sitting down for their first joint interview. while former president trump campaigned in michigan and wisconsin, focusing on women's reproductive care. cbs' jarred hill joins us with the latest. >> reporter: so former president trump's announcement on ivf and abortion is especially interesting seeing as how our polling shows vice president kamala harris has a pretty good lead among women voters. the vice president, meanwhile, is trying to define herself and her possible presidency in her first sit-down interview as the democratic nominee. the campaign trail in georgia to the hot seat.

>> reporter: vice president kamala harris and governor tim walz in their first in-depth interview since officially clinching the democratic nomination spoke to cnn about her top priorities. >> day one it's about one implementing my plan for what i call an opportunity economy. >> reporter: and clarified why she's changed her position on some policies she backed during her first run in 2019 like supporting a ban on fracking. >> we can increase a thriving clean-energy economy without banning fracking. >> reporter: and decriminalizing the southern border. >> i believe there should be consequence. we have laws that have to be followed and enforced. >> reporter: meanwhile, walz took on scrutiny over his military service. >> my record has been out there for over 40 years to speak for itself. >> reporter: former president trump called the interview boring on social media after he unveiled a new campaign promise while stumping in wisconsin and michigan. >> your government will pay for or your insurance company will be mandated to pay for all costs

associated with ivf treatment. >> reporter: trump making news of his own with nbc, criticizing florida's six-week abortion ban appearing to support a november ballot measure to expand access. >> i think the six week is too short. it has to be more time. >> reporter: his campaign later clarifying he hasn't yet said how he'll vote. the candidates go back on the trail this long weekend. trump today, then harris on labor day for her first campaign event with president biden. do you have any guess where all these folks might be? >> no. you tell me. >> reporter: of course it's pennsylvania. >> oh. >> reporter: highly sought after, those votes. >> i should have taken that. another battleground state. thank you so much. >> thank you. donald trump is asking a federal court to intervene in his hush-money criminal case in new york. trump is scheduled to be sentenced next month. he was convicted in may on 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up payments to

a porn star during the 2016 presidential campaign. trump's attorneys say the new york state case violated his constitutional rights and went against the supreme court's recent ruling on presidential immunity. the holiday travel rush is already under way for this long labor day weekend. the tsa says more than 17 million people are expected to be screened at the nation's airports through next wednesday. cbs' roxana saberi reports from newark liberty international airport. >> reporter: it's summer's last hurrah, and travelers are making a mad dash to their holiday destinations by planes, trains, and automobiles. at the nation's airports, the tsa expects its busiest labor day weekend on record with the peak travel day on friday. >> it's part of travel. even if there is a rush, there's always going to be little hiccups every now and then. >> reporter: driving this holiday weekend has its perks at the pump. >> i got a full tank for $2.94 a

gallon. that was great. >> reporter: gas prices have dropped the last four weeks in a row, with the national average now $3.36 a gallon. almost 50 cents lower than last year. how long do you think prices will continue to drop? >> this is something, this downward trend could last through thanksgiving or even christmas. we could see the national average falling below $3 a gallon for the first time in several years. >> reporter: aaa says the best time to hit the road on friday is before noon or after 7:00 p.m. walter webber and march chadwick left chattanooga, tennessee, and drove overnight to get to new york. >> one, two, 3:00 in the morning, very little going on on the roads. it's a clear road. >> reporter: you zipped down the highway. also kicking off the weekend early, john and adrianna ziza. they flew from chicago to newark. >> come back on sunday. so we're expecting that probably will be a lot busier. >> reporter: you can't stay longer? >> too many kids at home, so no.

>> reporter: roxana saberi, cbs news, newark airport, new jersey. for the millions of americans traveling today, bad weather may hamper your journey. flash flooding hit central pennsylvania overnight after a torrential downpour. thunderstorms are expected to hit parts of the midwest, the gulf coast, and the southeast. heavy rain is expected throughout the weekend east of houston and across southern louisiana. the rough weather could cause delays at the airports and on the roads. and later today, parts of the midwest could see severe storms impacting travel into and out of detroit. they could bring scattered, damaging winds and heavy downpours this afternoon and into the evening. health officials are advising people to take precautions against mosquito bites after recent cases of west nile virus. an 18-year-old missouri boy was left paralyzed and on a ventilator after contracting a severe case of the mosquito-borne virus earlier this month. health officials say two people in eastern wisconsin and one person in northeastern illinois

have died of west nile virus. and massachusetts is reporting a second confirmed case of eastern equine encephalitis virus that's spread by mosquitoes. now to the middle east where israel is pressing ahead with its massive military operation in the occupied west bank. the idf says it killed five more militants including a top commander hiding inside a mosque. israel says the commander was responsible for numerous attacks on israeli citizens. the army also said it uncovered weapons, explosive devices, and other military equipment in the mosque. in gaza, israel has agreed to pause the fighting to allow health workers to give polio vaccinations to 640,000 children after a baby contracted the disease. there will be three separate three-day pauses beginning sunday. and concern is growing in the red sea over potential environmental catastrophe. the houthis released video that they say shows fighters boarding a tanker carrying one billion

barrels of oil, planting explosives and then setting them off. the ship was abandoned earlier after being repeatedly attacked. satellite images show an oil slick on the water. back here at home, the school year is getting under way, but there have already been too many tragedies across the country involving student football players, and that is raising alarm bells for parents. cbs' carter evans looks at what can be done to keep your kids safe. >> reporter: it's a high school gathering no one wanted to see -- a memorial for 15-year-old robert gillon. the florida teen died from possible cardiac arrest the morning after he complained of chest pain. he's one of at least seven teenage football players who have died just this month. >> this is one of those things you thought would never happen. >> reporter: ryan craddock's 13-year-old son was rushed to the hospital in west virginia after hitting his head during practice last friday. >> a standard play. there was nothing any different about it. >> reporter: cohen was wearing a

helmet, but the injury caused his brain to swell, and he died the next day. 16-year-old caden tellier also died after a severe head injury during a game at his school in alabama. >> please be advised a male at the football field had heatstroke. >> reporter: leslie noble, also 16, collapsed in baltimore and died after a possible heatstroke. >> if you look at the main causes of catastrophic problems in kids, we talk about heat, we talk about hearts, we talk about heads. >> reporter: what can parents do? >> plug into the coaching knowing who's supervising and making sure that those people are trained and have the necessary equipment if there's a problem. >> reporter: cohen's dad is already taking action urging schools to attach padded head protectors called guardian caps to football helmets. >> i don't want to waste time. that's why i'm pushing for these kids now. >> reporter: even before your son's funeral. >> yes, sir. i do not want to see this happen to anybody else. >> reporter: in addition to

the idaho college murders, and how the fbi is still failing victims of abuse. those are some of the headlines on the "morning newsstand." "the washington post" says a report from the justice department's inspector general found the fbi continues to fall short in handling child sexual abuse allegations. it comes after a scathing 2021 report which said the fbi mishandled abuse allegations against usa gymnastics team doctor larry nassar that allowed him to continue to prey on victims. the inspector general said while the fbi did implement new rules after nassar it still failed to report child sex abuse allegations to local law enforcement or social service agencies. "the idaho statesman" says a judge held back from making a decision in a change of venue hearing for the man accused of killing four university of idaho students. lawyers for bryan kohberger want the trial scheduled for next june moved out of the county where the students were stabbed to death in 2022.

archaeologists in israel have discovered a rare ancient black stone seal in jerusalem. the 2,700-year-old stone was found near the southern wall of the temple mount dating back to the first temple period. it's engraved with a name in ancient hebrew and a winged figure thought to be a genie or demon. the seal is believed to have been used to seal documents. a warning about a dangerous magnet game, and mortgage rates are coming down. here's shanelle kaul with today's cbs "moneywatch." >> reporter: a mixed close to wall street on thursday with the dow marking a new record high. that index gained 242 points. -- 243 points. the nasdaq was down 39, and the s&p 500 lost just less than a point. good news for prospective home buyers. the average rate on a 30-year
