gearing up ahead of the forty-niners nfc championship game at levi's stadium as excitement builds across the bay area. >> from the area's local news station, you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. thank you so much for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news. i'm stephanie lin. it's saturday january the 27th. let's get you started with a look at the weather with dave spahr. good morning, dave. stephanie, good morning and good morning, everybody. quite a bit of cloud cover again to start. it looks like it's going to remain around throughout the weekend, although temperatures very mild and >> in fact, actually on the warm side as we get into tomorrow, but half perhaps breaking in some record, high temperatures going on there for sunday, too. here's what's going on for right now. again, that layer of cloud cover allowing a couple little peeks of some sunshine. you expect better performance tomorrow, but still quite a bit of cloud cover track a little bit of rain far up towards the north. that's north of sonoma county. as you will notice there. and most of the traffic is going

up in around us, but it's still unsettled way out to see what's going on as high pressure to our south is allegedly starting to build a bit. but we're on the edge. that means we'll have cloud cover 3, d and bleeding on through through tomorrow. a temperature check for most readings in the 50's or very mild. even at night. 40's up to the north. that gives you a quick contrast. there a couple degrees ahead for much of midday and trailing a little bit up north. here's the breakdown for you today. again, a couple of the rays of sun to start but cloudy skies still looking at temperatures, making it into the 60's, even mid 60's for those inland valleys. and we're looking for some heavier rain into next week. we'll be talking more about that coming up in a bit. 70. all right, dave, thank you. >> in the east bay, kaiser permanente is urging its oakland workers to stay inside due to increased security concerns. that means having meetings only in certain buildings, kron four's terisa stasio has the story. kron. 4 news is learning employees with in several departments at kaiser permanente's national

oakland headquarters. >> received e-mails advising them to bring lunches to work can stay inside the facility rather than venture out into the community. kaiser permanente issued this statement to kron 4 news quote in response to the current crime environment affecting all businesses and the entire community of oakland as well as other communities across the country. we continue to provide guidance to keep employees as safe as possible. and quote, i feel. >> safer now because recently they added armed guards and things like that. kaiser permanente employed carmen, who did not want to give us her last name says that she has worked at the medical center off broadway in oakland for several decades. you didn't get the memo. you believe that? it's probably i think it was geared towards the people that work in the regional offices. most of our regional offices are down and like downtown 1950, franklin down there. and that area is a lot more and safe. and i least last time i was down there. they didn't have the same kind of security that we have here. don't feel safe.

>> in this kaiser patient in town for an appointment declined to go on camera but shared her feelings about the email sent out and the city i feel safer in the piedmont area. but >> it's just and all over type of not feeling safe. unfortunately, i try not to walk the streets. kron 4 news reached out to oakland mayor sheng thao about the steps. kaiser is taking. >> her office issued this statement, quote, mayor thao regularly collaborate with business leaders on our shared vision of promoting safe and thriving oakland, kaiser is a valued employer and partner in addressing community safety. the mayor also added that progress is being made with a reduction in property crime. >> if you can't keep people safe and people can have their businesses here, that should be a wake-up call for the elected officials that they need to do better. >> in oakland, theresa kron, 4 news. and city lights and

iconic bookstore in san francisco is now unionized. city lights open back in 1953. as the nation's first all people backs bookstore over time and has served as a gathering space for writers, poets and community members. the union says it looks forward to negotiating towards a prosperous workplace. for all. you can see that statement on your screen right there. but they shared on social media. all right. take a look at this. sheriff's deputies in santa clara county found a loaded gun and 30 grams of meth at a home connected to 2 people with criminal records. deputies say they went to the house near san jose friday while tracking down a stolen car. both suspects were arrested. and one man is dead after an attempted carjacking friday in tahoe. investigators say a state parks officer shot and killed the man after following him in a stolen car near olympic valley in at palisades tahoe. police say the suspect got out of his car armed with a knife. that's when the officer opened fire. nearly 2

months in san francisco issued a temporary ban on street vending in the mission district. a new report claims the ban is helping reduce crime in the area. the ban went into effect back on november 27th that's set to expire next month. and city officials argue the ban was place because the area was a hot spot for crime vendors with legal permits, though they protested, claiming that the band negatively impacted their business and livelihood. on friday, the city released survey results on the safety progress finding in the last 9 weeks. sfpd reported a 30% decrease in assaults and robberies. 50 per 6% of surveyed businesses reported feeling the area is safe or 40% said they witnessed an increase in foot traffic. no word yet on if city officials plan to extend the ban. and excitement is building ahead of tomorrow's nfc championship game between the niners and the detroit lions won responsive francisco police

caltrans immunity are announcing closures in the city. kron four's tiffany justice live for us now in francisco this morning with the details that we need to know. good morning, tiffany. >> good morning, stephanie wright in anticipation of the big nfc game on sunday, law enforcement is planning on shutting down several roadways following the game. we do know that several san francisco off-ramps from us 101. >> to interstate highway 2.80, will be closed sunday after the nfc championship game. according to caltrans. these are the off ramps that will be impacted in closed from 07:00pm to midnight. so us 101, northbound and southbound cesar street will be blocked off along with us 101, northbound at mission street. caltrans says i-280 northbound at san jose avenue is included along with i-280, northbound and southbound at geneva avenue. now, again, these off ramp closures will go from 07:00pm to midnight on sunday. now, meanwhile, as apd says they will be addressing roads

downtown by limiting car traffic on mission. in valencia between 21st and 27th street. and here's a map showing you the impacted area. they say these closures are in the interests of public safety and they are telling people to avoid the area on sunday. you need is also working to pass. we closed down streets in, quote, anticipation of public possible public reaction to the outcome of the game. they could potentially close down 24th street between patrol and valencia along with mission street between 21st and chavez. now these closures, what happened between 5.30, and 10:00pm on sunday. uni alerting some of their customers that some of their bus routes will be rerouted as well. back to 70. >> tiffany, thank you for that report. >> one of the game on sunday night >> there we go. forty-niners fans getting ready for this weekend's game stocking up on lots of red and gold merges. you can see force justin campbell connected with some niner fans at the team store.

>> san francisco city leaders announced a draft plan friday to re imagine the city's shoreline over many decades. this move aims to protect the area from flooding. kron four's gayle ong has the details. >> in the next century by the end of this century, 3 to 7%.

the waterfront will be covered in water. >> cannot allow a situation where the embarcadero is being flooded regularly, where muni and bart tunnels are being flooded regularly. elected officials from the state, federal and the city of san francisco. >> addressing sea level rise friday afternoon for the past 6 years. the port of san francisco and the army corps of engineers have been studying the coastal risk for the seawall, stretching 7.5 miles from aquatic park down to parents had park officials shared details from the water front flood study. >> this draft plan considers climate resiliency as a goal for the san francisco waterfront. it establishes approximately where the corps of engineers and the city to build a coastal resiliency and mitigation features both structural and nature based and how much future sea level rise these features will have to manage before they need to

be adapted to higher water levels. the draft plan does not include designs for flood defenses just yet. >> but it would require places like the embarcadero to shut down to complete the work. plan will be implemented over many decades, many decades and the phasing and implementation strategies will be very important to us. it will also cost money. there's no doubt it's expensive. it has a price tag of multi billions, 13 billion to be specific at this time when we move forward on projects the federal government will pay for $0.65 of every dollar that it costs 65% contribution. the highest tides of the year known as the king tides show a glimpse of how high the water can get along. the embarcadero waterfront. >> these leaders want to keep talking about the issue. in some ways we're like we're planting a tree future generations will enjoy. but we owe it to them. >> we owe it to them to make sure to make sure we do this right.

bit of cloud cover hanging around. here it is in the motion. you can see again up towards the north kind of out of our viewing area. again, we see little piece of action happening tonight. overnight temperature check for you. got some 50's mostly on the board here inland. they drop into the upper 40's at that. but we'll warm up very nicely today. and even tomorrow might even smashed some records while we're at it. futurecast for here. we generally speaking, mostly cloudy skies again, couple breaks in the clouds some sun trying to come through maybe bright white skies at times and then overnight might see the little passage of a few little showers going on here tomorrow. looks like we've got to keep that cloud cover. still in the forecast, there are breaks that happened here. but mostly are considerable cloud is the real. we don't really start to clear out an earnest and until we get into monday now on balance, we're taking a break in the rain outside of the little showers going on overnight will do the same for monday and on balance for most of tuesday. then things turned tomorrow. we're talking mostly cloudy, touch, warmer, lower 70's, maybe some records of that, particularly

to the south into the east. that's alameda county. santa clara county. those the most likely areas for some of those records to pop because that's closer to the high in the next week. here. monday is sunny. but unsettled into the week. stormy. we're looking at wednesday thursday. it's basically wednesday overnight from sunset on wednesday, all the way till thursday by dawn. the heaviest rain will happen during that time, particularly says kind of timed out nicely. unfortunately, a finish off. we kind of unsettled. 64 san francisco, 65 oakland. 69 going on for san jose. most readings in the 60's will course take a nice will dive into on your 4 zone. forecast been extended as well. it gets a little cooler on the other side of all that stuff. and we get into some of that rain by wednesday here. but we're going to repeat some of that rain and also into next week, it looks like unsettled in the next weekend following, ok, have you know? well already. yep. that is okay. thanks so much, dave. >> well, friday marked 2 years since the disappearance of alexis gabe, her family gather to remember and

kuykendall who has supported the game since alexis first disappeared, decided to give back to some people who helped with the investigation into alexis is disappearance. starbucks donated the copy for oakland pd side that doughnuts and coffee. when says he's grateful that even antioch police participated, they did perform an act kindness today >> responding to our email that's >> been waiting for. he says pd offered to give them information. their lawyer needs to continue fighting for justice for alexis. >> when says he heard from more than 100 people that they plan to participate in kindness, day in memory of a lexus in oakley amanda hari kron. 4 news. >> and tesla is recalling about 200,000 vehicles because of a rear camera issue. the recall affects the 2023 model s x and y a federal safety. officials say the backup

camera might not display an image on the dashboard screen while in reverse due to possible software instability. tesla already has released a free software update to address this problem and odor owners will be notified by mail in march. in national news, presidential politics could be responsible for killing an immigration deal in congress. washington, d.c., correspondent hannah brandt explains. >> leaders in washington agree there's a desperate need for border reform. the immigration system is broken and has been decades now. but the immigration deal senate negotiators are working on is now in danger of collapsing. and former president donald trump seems partly to blame. former president trump indicated to senators he does not want to solve the problem. the border senator mitt romney accuses trump of playing politics that he doesn't want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame biden for is a is really up. the white house is making an appeal to the other party.

house republicans they have to choose who they want to help do. they want to score political points? but many republicans are taking trump site on friday. house speaker mike johnson sent a letter to his colleagues calling the senate border bill, quote, dead on arrival. all the details of the deal aren't public yet. senator jd vance says from what he does know, frankly, i'm not too happy with the package, but the lawmakers leading the negotiations say the deal isn't dead yet. we know how important this we are negotiating in good faith and want to get this done in a bipartisan way. the white house says they still have hope lawmakers can reach a compromise. there has been progress in our conversations and the pressure is on as concerns about immigration intensify. it is truly of crisis proportion and is very dangerous for our country. the package does feel the past. senator joe mansion says the president should take steps to crack down on the border himself in washington. i'm hannah brandt. >> still ahead on kron 4 morning news, boeing 7.37. max. 9 planes are cleared to fly again.

united and alaska are the 2 carriers to use these planes. an aviation expert tells kron 4 that he does agree with the move to allow these planes to fly again. >> the main reason being that, although this was a new aircraft, it was delivered on halloween day 2023. in the incident happened just a couple of months after this design in this actual installation had been in use on the 7.37. 900 model for over 20 years. >> federal officials say they won't let boeing expand production of max jets until quality control concerns are result. >> could social media companies be found liable for illicit drugs sold on their platforms? that's exactly what one piece of legislation here at the state capitol aims to do. but can a work capitol correspondent eytan wallace will speak with the author of will speak with the author of the bill. not just any whiteboard...

which to deal with for this weekend. but they'll be sharing it with the some sunshine to with that, too, as well. we've got, hey, we've got warming temperatures, by the way, for tomorrow as well. some records potentially may fall with all about. so what we have going on right now, still quite a bit of cloud cover is the situation that we have for you and for afternoon. temperatures into the 60's now want to show you half moon bay for right now. you can see all that cloud cover still kind of hang around temperature. check for you in the 50's over much of the region for right now. so we're fairly mild. doesn't take much to really move these numbers up a little bit more. so for highs today, which will be mostly in the 60's. there you have them. the winds, they're gonna stay pretty calm of the next about 40 hours. not a big surprise. when you have high pressure like this. but the high pressure is to our southwest. so therefore, it's not a big shock that we're seeing the warming numbers to be had to the south in the east bay a little bit as well tomorrow for the niners looks like about temperatures in the lower 70's here. variable clouds, warmer. then our average temperatures. in fact, again, in the south, they might see some numbers, a

smash, the records there don't think the detroit lions will used to this kind of weather. 57 at 11 o'clock by 2. we're talking 61 tomorrow again, warmer for everybody else. but on balance, for the exception of a little shower overnight, we're going to be pretty much rain free on through monday. but then middle of the week things start to change will get more that longer range forecast for you in just a bit. stephanie. all right, dave, thank you. >> and now to a story of sticker shock for some pg and e customers. january bills more than doubled for some of was rob nesbitt. looks at how much more you could be paying. >> the start of the new year has not been easy on the wallet to pg e customers despite warnings about rate increases, social media is full of posts like these bay area. customers complaining about their monthly bill and one even regretting their choice to get an electric vehicle. martone is executive director of the utility reform network or turn. it says many pg e customers are having to choose between heating their homes or feeding their families. more and more people. >> are falling behind and

they're in danger of being disconnected. many of whom going end up on the street homeless because they're going to get evicted from their rental properties. the california public utilities commission approved a rate increase of 13% this month. >> is considering another 7.2% hike from march. if approved pg e customers will pay around. $48 more a month. turn is pushing for new legislation that will cap future rate increases at no more than the cost of living adjustment provided. i thought security on an annual basis according to pg and e a majority of the money from the rate hikes will reduce wildfire risks, replace gas pipelines, and improve infrastructure spokesperson tamar sarkissian says there were also unexpected costs to cover things like >> the storms that we experienced last the impact to our there's there's a lot of costs that come with those 2 out. customers cover the

costs. >> pg and e has expanded their reach program to provide more support to low-income households this year increasing bill credits from $500 to $1000 for qualifying customers. tony says that the company lowered rates there would be less need for customer assistance programs. people don't like to be told. >> do the right thing for the environment. spend the extra money to replace your appliance and your reward. is that your monthly bills will be higher. then before this year's rate hikes aren't the only frustrations felt by turn, they say last year the california public utilities commission approved enough rate hikes to increase pg e customers bills by about 33%. >> reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. >> amid concerns drug dealers are using online platforms to sell illicit drugs. a new bill going through the state legislature seeks to tackle the issue head on by holding social media companies liable. our capitol correspondent eytan wallace explains.

>> while the assembly member behind the legislation believes his bill could save lives and make the digital world a safer place. but the proposal could face an uphill battle. >> its an issue that's come to light in the digital age. drug dealers using social media platforms to sell illicit substances, get hearing and over again. over and over - >> illicit drugs being sold on the internet. many of that would be in bill. >> where it caused death assembly member reggie jones lawyer says in many of the cases brought to his attention, victims are teens and young adults who he says he thought they were purchase, uncontrolled illegal drugs or worse were lured into buying illegal drugs by dealers who tracked victims down online. it's caused such a devastating. >> impact the lives of some very innocent people. but no to them are buying drugs that ultimately are killing them. but adding to the issue, john sawyer believes social media platforms have done little to nothing to stop online

dealers. that's what he says. he's introducing the web safe act to impose civil and criminal penalties on social media companies and platforms where users are easily able to sell illegal drugs. >> for the legislation, companies could face fines and employees discovered to have known or contributed could even face prison time. if it's found the sale of substances on their platforms led to an overdose or a death is about making people account in the past. social media companies have vehemently opposed similar legislation arguing they are taking steps to protect users and delete accounts belonging to convicted dealers. but john sawyer argues it is not been enough. they didn't do more. the amount of money that's being poured into these web >> i think they can go ahead and use some of that money to provide some preventions to ensure this practice is hopefully eliminated so that we don't have any more deaths. >> we did reach out to several social media companies, but so far heard back only from

tiktok tiktok did not comment on this specific legislation but maintained illegal drug sales are strictly forbidden on its platform. reporting from the state capitol. a tom wallace kron. 4 news. >> the countdown is on the nfc championship game kicks off at levi stadium this weekend on friday. the forty-niners got some great news about one of their star players kron. 4 sports reporter aaron wilson has the latest. >> well, a little more than 24 hours to go for the nfc championship game with the lions and well, the forty-niners they received some good news just yesterday on friday and they were hoping for this news ahead of this matchup, the pulse annual he had been cleared and will play on sunday against the lions. now the first out wide receiver took part in his second straight practice today or yesterday, actually and wasn't even listed on the forty-niners injury report. and the pope played only 9 snaps against the packers before suffering a shoulder injury. well, the news is that it's good now niners fans can

off-ramps from us want interstate highway 2.80, will be closed sunday evening after the nfc championship game. according to caltrans. these are the off-ramp sell be impacted in closed down from 07:00pm to midnight. so as goes us 101, northbound and southbound. cesar chavez street will be blocked off along with us 101, northbound and mission street. caltrans says i-280 northbound at san jose avenue is included in this along with i-280, northbound and southbound at geneva avenue. again, these off ramp closures will go from 07:00pm to midnight on sunday. meanwhile, as apd says they'll be addressing roads downtown by limiting car traffic on mission. in valencia between 20st street and 27th street. here's a map to show you exactly the impacted areas. they say these closures are in the interest of public safety telling people to avoid this area. now, muni is also working to possibly close down streets, quote, in anticipation of possible public reaction. the outcome

going to have a warm lentil and arugula salad. and on the side, we're going to some rest. a cauliflower garlic sounds delightful. a lot of food, but very delicious and healthy. are you a phish fan? and i'm a big fish fan. and to lobby is one of my favorite fish actually purrfect perfect. i love tilapia too. i have some organically. farm-raised tilapia. and, you know, fish is so healthy for you. it is. so we really should eat it. and what i love about tilapia is that it's a light fish and really what ever marinade or sashi put with it. it really takes that flavor. so i i'm in the marinade. this tilapia and my marinade is really simple, stephanie, it's just a little bit of extra virgin olive oil. i've got know, it's so delicious. and a little dijon mustard and lemon, and i hope you like garlic because i put a lot of courage. fortunate. i don't think i'll be talking anyone after the show today. are looks good. so i'm let that marinate in my refrigerator. about 20.

>> minutes. maybe an hour max. and then while that's marinating, we're going to go ahead and make a delicious lentil and arugula salad. >> no, i'm using the green lentils are. do you like lentils? you eat lentils? i'm always open to trying i love lentils in there. so many cuisines that used lentils. and i think a lot of people don't cook with them. they don't know how to use them, ok, recipe. so that's why i'm here. yes, so it's actually very easy. i just boil some water and i cook those for about 15 minutes and they turn out to be really soft. but hold their flavor tape. so i love that about these lentils for this salad. so you're getting a lot of new trance, but you're also going to have that nice texture. you know this fascinating to me personally, because i always seen the lentils seen them before. so this is really need any great. and like i said, most people don't know where to look for him. it's with

your regular beans. and and new chick, you know, things like that in store. there. there. and what i'm going to do is i have addressing and i'm going to carry some of the same flavors from our marinate. i have dijon mustard. i also have the extra virgin olive oil. but this time i added some red wine vinegar and salt and pepper and i'm going to season these while they're still warm because they're going to pick up that flavor, weather warm. they're going to really absorb it. if you could help me stay putting in onion, ok, and some of the parsley actual all of it. and okay, yes, that looks great. and we're going to add the parsley and well, some nice color their yes. and i love a nice fresh herb when we are making addressing that. so now i'm going to add the arugula. to and i love that peppery flavor of arugula less and huge arugula plan and it's very healthy to it they are

colors, right? whenever it screen like that, you know, it's going to be good for you. and then i'm going to take the rest of the dressing and i'm going to put that right over the and i love this because it will hold its shape and it's flavor even with all the stressing and there's going to be a lot of different textures to go along with it to exactly. so you're not just eating healthy, but you're getting flavor flavor flavor at every step, which is are we so delicious now to go with this? i am going to make some roasted cauliflower with. here we go again with the have garlic and parmesan cheese. okay. i just added some extra virgin olive oil to this. i also added a lot of garlic, salt and pepper and i'm going to roast in the oven with the tilapia. same for 100 degree temperature makes it nice and easy this is going to take a little longer swimming to put this in for about 15 to 20 minutes. our tilapia only going to take about 12. so we're going to put that in. we're going to have it roast
