>> welcome back. taking a live look now from our mount tam camera looking gorgeous out there. 9.13, for you this sunday morning. let's check in now with day for more on his thoughts on whether a day. well, good morning, stephanie. good morning, everybody. to shake off some of the stratus that's kind of left over. you can see this also at half moon bay. >> as we start our day today, but still very warm, offshore winds. so the wind is coming in are back from this direction here. and that does little bit of extra warming in the process to we could see numbers along the coast in some areas. reach 70 today as we close out january. there are your numbers right there and where the direction the winds are coming from offshore. the other factor to along the east bay shoreline, lower 70's as that wind comes in from the land. breeze comes up over the hills comes down along the east bay shoreline gets compressed and you get a little bit of extra spike there on those numbers. so look at stormtracker 4. you want to note some of the again
9:15 am
that stratus cloud cover. that remains a bit. we we're watching some little splotches on the radar earlier. they have to go through a lot of dry air. so it's just mixing really occurring above us. it always happens anyway will be left with some of that exhaust in terms if you little clouds still make note of today, but pretty good as we head on until tuesday. that's when things start to change. so in the short term forecast, again, looking not looking bad at all. clearing it out a little better for tonight. and then into tomorrow. looks pretty good at that was struck the day off with sunshine again. a few scattered clouds to make note you can see towards tuesday start to thicken things up a little bit as our next storm system arrives. so the breakdown for you. scattered clouds today warm. here's sfo with 60's and plenty of 70's to dish out records to watch out for 2 most notably in the south bay and portions of the east bay early week is a nice start on monday. and then again, as we talked about tuesday starts to change with some showers wednesday overnight into thursday's where it looks to be the heaviest rain night.
9:16 am
that will be from wednesday night and before dawn on thursday. then its going to somewhat unsettled as we finish the week. that means some scattered clouds, cooler temperatures, winds and sums and some cooler temperatures in the 50's with lows in the 30's might make up for the little bit by the weekend, but not like this. 76 san francisco. look at that. 71 going on for open. 76 san jose and the sky conditions might even be a little bit better than what you see there, particularly in the south bay. it looks like as well. highs on the big board here. you see the lower 70's lining up the east bay shoreline, a little warmer than you see inland here. this is a different type of decoupling that we tennessee, like say in the summer months because of that factor, some compression leading up north there. santa rosa catches up at 75. 69, half moon bay. i'll get more into this and the 4 zone forecast plus are going to walk through that longer range forecast with that rain midweek. there. dave, thank you. >> a local nonprofit is supporting under-served students in richmond to help them be the first in their families to attend college. here to share more about the important work they're doing.

our brad blake and angelica arriaga with college israel. thank you so much to the both of you for joining us bright and early this morning. thanks for having us. so brad, i do want to start with you. basically started this program. so tell us a bit about the inspiration behind it and what it's all about. >> we started the program in 2005 with a 15 students at richmond high school. then through a soccer event that happened. that kind of inspired me to get involved with the school and i saw that there was a great need for these kids to have help outside of most of these kids, none of them were going to and we also look at the community and say you have a area were very few people go to college. there's high unemployment, lower incomes, a except are. and so i just got inspired through that sarah serendipitous serendipitous event help start the and then, how about you? how did you get involved? >> i had just graduated, got
9:18 am
college and decided i wanted to be in the education space. so i bumped into this opportunity thinking that i commit myself for 2 as i prepared to become a teacher. but 14 years later, i'm still with the organization all and so tell us a bit about how things are structured, how you recruit your students. we operate in the high school space and we students can join any time between 9th through 11th grade. we are looking for particular gpa. we really want students that just want to go to college. they have aspirations and we want to support them. as they prepare often be the first ones in their family to go to and walk us through to some of the challenges that students in the demographic you serve sort of face on a day-to-day basis and why it's so tough for them to be the first to go to college. go ahead, ok? so richmond is really rough a lot of, you know, poverty, gang
9:19 am
and so students are often trying to survive and not really thinking about their futures. a lot of the students have responsibly is at home. they might be financially supporting their families. and so it's really tough for them to think about, you know, what's beyond sort of what's in front of them. so i think that it's really challenging, especially when you haven't had anybody that can guide you or even encourage. you really understand how to navigate the space. so it's really helpful to have a program like ours to just really get the message across. right. and that was part of brad's inspiration was to name the organization college israel because is real for our students and anybody that really wants to go. stephanie, one of the challenges is in these communities is kids don't have any role. models of people haven't gone to college. in fact. >> most of the parents haven't even graduated from high school. and so they need to be able to see that it's possible and be around people. that can tell them it's possible and help them with their dream. and that's when the engine her
9:20 am
staff does there really the role models for these kids a really powerful thing. >> when you can set that example for, you know, kids in the bay area. wanted to get your sense for somebody who's new to the program. what's the experience they can expect? so we really focus on relationship building. that is what makes us different and makes us really successful is that we want to get tenure students to better support them. but we're really focused around academic, advising, right? we've college field. trips were doing career exploration. we have a mentoring component to our program, making sure students are able to have conversations with people who have gone through the path already. we also have a scholarship that students receive upon pursuing their education for university. so lot of support we operate from the college and career center's at each of the high schools yes, so we're testable at the school sites. we have really strong relationships with the administration and the teachers on and that's really
9:21 am
helpful to students. we like to say we're available 24 7 because they can reach out to us at any time. but we're just there for them. i think one of the big differences with program is that we're really high touch. >> and and and jenner staff are available literally. 24 they go to kids sporting events to their after school activities. they talk to their it's it's really a really full time support program. and what again, the as their criteria for admissions at this point. >> so on paper says you want to have at least a 2 point. oh gpa. but really, as i mentioned, it's really about the aspirations of wanting to go to college, right? because if a student is in 9th 10th, 11010th grade and they really want to go to college, we can work around making sure they are a through g okay. we've had a number of kids who come into the program with lower gpa was in high school who ended up graduating with 3.5 to 4 and they just needed some inspiration, motivation and
9:22 am
guidance is a welcome again through the success maybe some success stories as well. >> so 100% of our students graduate high school and upwards of 90% or accept into at least one for university every single so we're seeing a lot of kids getting accepted and a lot of them following going on pursue their education. in fact, out of our 3 are former students of my colleagues and and all staff members have graduate from richmond high school. so they're coming back into the community to support other students to do the same. it's a beautiful full circle moment when you see us when you hear about stories like that of how can people get more information about this? >> i would the best way is go to our website, which is college. israel dot org and it's really very comprehensive and you'll see everything on there and you can and you're right directly through uk, wonderful and any plans to expand outside of richmond. >> i think original mission
9:23 am
was to change the college-going culture in richmond. >> and really focus on richmond, which is in the grand scheme of things, not a big city compared to oakland, san francisco, san jose, but it has all of the urban problems and we think we can make a much bigger difference focused completely on a city like richmond, then trying to across the board. okay. all right. well, thank you so much. a bread angelica with college israel for your important work with inspiring kids in the community. really appreciate and thank you very much. all right. we'll be right back.

through 73 for palo alto in the south bay. this is what we're looking for. numbers to fall. san jose. if you make it to 75, that will shatter your record. 74 milpitas. also santa clara. so feeling more today like a baseball game than a football game east bay shoreline, lower 70's. notice how it's a little warmer than try valley benefit from that compression. ul heating with the offshore winds already dry going over the east bay hills, 69 for concord. 69 also 70 for fairfield are on this otter artificially pumped up because of the offshore winds. 75 going on for santa rosa and 72 for petaluma. check it out. the 7 day forecast here. here's the unsettled stuff we talked about wednesday. the heavy rain probably by wednesday night into thursday, lingering then a little bit unsettled into next weekend. but there's your temperature correction to remind you, february is a winter month mid-fifties and lows in the 30's. stephanie? yeah. >> all right, dave, thank you. well, if your new year's resolution is already a thing of the past, don't worry. you are not alone here. 80% of

9:49 am
spouse. has the tv on. so we really need to get complete darkness because that's when the p neil released melatonin, which is your sleep hormone. so and it really works for me. just the sleep mask. absolutely. i have tried to see must also have blackout curtains that does help me. noticed in hotels with the blackout curtains, south sleep nice. i mean, it's really nice when you get that experience, at least for me personally, because i feel like i'm really getting a good car in and that's exactly the same concept and try to incorporate some aroma therapy the room and 10. and this is a a portable diffuser. and and you can i take this new it's it's a traveling 1, 0, k it's it's very easy. has usb and then some of the essential oils to think about. you probably heard lavender love live together at under bergamot in now. so like let him sounds ok, yes, so you can get them

individually or in bland's like like great. okay. and you also mention it's important to have a friend to help you reinforce those healthy habits that you're trying to incorporate in the new yes. and in light about really think about that at the beginning. but once that the study show, once you're 2 weeks in, that's when you start to so real important to find, especially now if you didn't do that before to find a buddy or higher buddy, but someone that's going to help strengthen your resolve. ok? very good. so it can be a family e friend. yes, even just checking on each other over tech titans, someone that has the same. they're both trying to you know their goal. it's great. it's great to surround ourselves with people who are just our cheerleaders and support us. so tell us to about reframing how we think about resolutions to so. one thing about resolutions as people set them and their 2,
9:51 am
they that's what i see a lot of failure. so said the resolution, i'm going to exercise more this year. that really it. very big. it's not specific. so it really create any kind require any kind of commitment. i i want you to the next time you said a resolution go through these the steps. first, what is it that you're going to do, ok? i'm gonna walk. when are you going to do it? can do it monday, wednesday, friday. and what time? 3 o'clock where you going to do it at the gym with whom your buddy, right? that's right. why why? it's really important because you want to make sure that you understand why you're doing what it's not because your spouse is pushing to go doctors pushing has to come from you. yes, yeah. i some personally when i'm facing like maybe a really tough workout or just a challenge in life in general. if i you know, think back to
9:52 am
the y. yeah. that is such a powerful motivator. it's very powerful. i hear things i just want to be able to walking, keep up with a take my grand kids to disneyland, be able to keep so things like that are really important and it's sending the y and then how are you going to do it? how how fast? how long? so notice we're really getting to specific and hear your goal. and then is it simple? lot of people make it too complicated. true. yes, i'm going to go for a bike ride every day and i and horse trail, which means taking their bike, putting it on the taking it down. so whatever you can do to to simplify those steps and make it super and also just make it something that's relatively achievable. yes, you know, beating. so, yeah. especially at the beginning. yeah, it's it's really important. ok, very good so walk us through the best way. we can also keep ourselves accountable in terms of measuring our daily progress. tell us about that.
9:53 am
so monitoring your progress. so progress is positive reinforcement and you want to make sure too. you could do this by hand or on on the computer, but make sure that you're looking at what you're doing every day and acknowledging that and focus on. if you focus last last time on the long-term goals. like i'm going to get half i'm gonna get healthy or i'm going to low. i want to lower my cholesterol. those are long-term goals in games. you want to focus on the short-term games like after a go for a walk. it feels so good. i could go to i go back to work and i feel energized. i'm thinking more clearly now. so think of those short-term gains versus the long-term ones we have about 5 seconds here. but rewarding ourselves, who are just south of the brand 3 wards because then it will tell you this this thing is worth worth doing again. so things like relaxation. petting your pet going
9:54 am
enjoying the garden. yeah. that are connecting with nature. all good. and these these early slips that does it mean long-term failure. so stay encouraged in and be optimistic. all right. wonderful thinking positive. thank you so much health expert reminding us of ways that we can pick things back up. a flea. don't always meet our new year's resolutions right away. thank you so much. you're welcome. all right. we'll be right back. hercules
