>> news station, this 11. >> under way is widespread falling power outages, flooding in road closures are impacting the bay area tonight. we've got team coverage on the storm damage and what residents can expect for their monday morning

commute. good evening and thank you so much for joining us for kron. 4 news at 11. i'm dan thorn with that storm. cleanup underway across the bay area as a sites like this have become more widespread. this is video from the citizen this is out of oakland where a tree branch snapped and fell onto a power line and smashed and the roof of this house. >> the video showing the damage this happening on 22nd street near saw sulk creek also in san francisco damage and downed power lines from falling trees number of neighborhoods citizen app video showing the this road here blocked off in the castro neighborhood. this is sanchez and 17th street this afternoon. you can see that tree actually completely uprooted and actually damaging some of the sidewalk there as well blocking off of the road. and hayes valley, a fallen tree. looks like it just barely missed. hitting a car out there. but you can see crews having to to block off the area actually looks may be maybe like, yeah, just landing on a car there. wow. unbelievable. the road. having to be blocked off because of

this fire crews and pg e crews really busy around the city today. and we're just going to keep continuing with this video. the citizen app also showing us active scene in the soma neighborhood to tree branches breaking off blocking traffic along 6th street. you can see the tree branches there actually falling onto a car. unfortunate this situation. no injuries were reported, though. but of course, if you do see down trees, power lines, tree branches, all of that call 3, 1, 1, to the crews can come to your neighborhood and clean it up. so let's get a look at the forecast tonight. now we're taking a time lapse right now through oakland of the storm today. you can see it kind of just moving through. still a lot of cars out there which is sort of unfortunate. but, you know, people had to get around pg any sharing this along the coliseum and the oakland arena area. let's check in now with gayle on for a look at the forecast. a more in-depth look at the forecast again. >> hello again. yes, san francisco and point topped over 40 miles an hour. wind gusts so very dam, dangerous,

damaging winds out there. and you can see why. here are the peak wind gusts just for the past or so. we had 102, miles per hour at public point and west, where and now i'm in 85 miles per hour in the santa cruz mountains point gray's 77 miles an hour and mount diablo. just 75 miles an hour. and oakland and mountain lena hat man say tele high 62 61 miles an hour or so. very dangerous winds. and that seems to be that threat going forward because now that are heavy precipitation is more. and then it has now transitioned to convection road, which is we could see isolated scattered thunderstorms, which is what the activity we saw today towards the afternoon and even right now. so current wind speeds 28 miles an hour and point raise 16. it's francisco so i have scaled back for now, but we will be still dealing with those winds, at least through the overnight because

a wind advisory in the high wind warning have been extended until tomorrow. 08:00am so wind speeds 20 to 30 miles an hour during your morning commute. gusts up to 40 to 60 miles an hour. damaging winds here. throughout the overnight and into the morning. and here is the last 24 hours. you could see this storm and take a look. it is just so significant. we haven't seen something like this. according to the national weather service since january 2010. so definitely a significant storm here. we have just about a lot to talk about. so here's where the activities right now we're seeing widespread showers here across the bay area. san francisco looks like you're getting a little break. so right now energy is focusing on the south bay. so if you drive the 6.80 by san jose, 101 by morgan hill that looks like a wet drive over there right now. and these blue circles. these are reports of strong wind gusts. so this was really all about the winds, too. but rain totals. we did get a lot of the 4 inches. i

know we've got more than that in the santa cruz mountains. but boulder creek reporting out ballpark around 4 inches. fairfax, 4 inches. san francisco and richmond in oakland and san jose about an inch of rain. so when i come back, we'll be timing out the rest of your evening and your morning commute because monday does look like a better day and what we're dealing with today. back to you. >> all right. thanks a lot. hundreds of thousands of customers across the bay area without power tonight we are at nearly 322,000 customers that are without power. the orange areas right there showing anywhere from 500 to 5,000 red at 5,000 plus, customers. we're going to keep you updated throughout the night and also on our website with these power outage numbers. you can see pretty widespread there in the south bay. this is the san jose area to the east of san jose. you can see the red. you can see it all the way up the peninsula. so most of the bay area dealing with these issues tonight. a lot of people sitting in the dark but pg and e says that they're responding

to these outages. as quickly as possible. and you can tell by this map it's going to take some time to restore all of those lines. so be patient. let's go to the south bay now with the san jose fire department is working hard to keep people safe today. this is a swift water rescue team out along the guadalupe river. they rescued several people in some dogs. the fire department posting on x to not drive through those low lying areas of water because you may end up getting stuck and also avoid being near the guadalupe river. kron 4 sarah stinson reporting tonight from san jose on the damage that some residents have been left with. >> the heavy rain and wind gusts have brought down trees across the san jose area. and we're seeing that right here on la grande drive. you can see some of the branches that are left in the aftermath. >> it is been so much wind in some of the trees around here are shallow rooted are very brittle, strong wind and heavy

rain caused a tree to crash down on in town home on rocky creek court in san jose sunday morning. jonelle crane lives next door. there was loud sound and the building shook a little crane says they fully the couple and dog living there didn't get hurt with the massive tree did destroy their roof and hit a gas line. neighbors came banging on my door saying there's a gas leak. there's a gas leak we have to get out of. here was just everywhere. and it king through their garage, got a little bit of their bedroom. they were fine >> but it surprised all of us. so we packed everything up. but the fire department came and said everything's fine, turn off their gas on top of it all cream is one of thousands of pg e customers in the san jose area. >> who spent the day without power damage from the storm could be seen throughout the area just down the street on mount pleasant road. a power pole fell. traffic lights were out at several intersections in the tree was blocking a lane on east capitol

expressway. a safeway on tully road closed early because of the power outage in employees says their generator wasn't working so they couldn't stay open. crane says she's prepared for the outage. she's got a plan to stay warm. the gases on and i have a fireplace and probably going to run that tonight to stay warm. but i got 2 cats. they're going that warmers. san jose has also declared a local emergency and an evacuation order for the unhoused who live along the guadalupe river. >> there is overnight warming center that's been opened up and that is at roosevelt community center that's open through monday. i'm sara stinson reporting in san jose kron. 4 news. >> we've got some new pictures tonight from the alameda fire department. a rescue team saving a person that was stranded out on the sailboat today. they brought them safely to the rock wall there. and then that person was taken to hospital. you can see by the conditions out there. that was definitely not the easiest

rescue operation. and we've got some new video tonight. a giant tree landing across a couple of yards in contra costa county. fortunately this tree missed both of the houses on that street. but it did take out some power lines and landed on some cars that were parked there on the street. this was on martinez avenue. the tree about 6 feet around and it took some time to chop up. but khan fire crews eventually got it all cleared up and the power there appears to be back on. of course, there are power issues throughout contra costa county tonight. governor gavin newsome declaring the 8 counties in southern california are under a state of emergency. he visited the governor's office of emergency services near sacramento today to receive briefings on the weather and discuss the state's response efforts. the state is already mobilized a record. 8500 emergency response assets. state officials say that they're ready to respond to these storms. >> if you know that you live in historically vulnerable areas that are prone to flooding in, even if you experience water intrusion. the last storm we had, you need to have a plan. where is

back to kron. 4 news at 11. take a look at the strong winds blowing on top of mount tam today. we know that. >> it caused a lot of damage and uprooted a lot of trees throughout our entire region. and we're going to check in now in the north bay where kron four's terisa stasio reports of the damage and power outages. there. >> a traumatic ordeal in the north bay, a giant redwood tree came crashing down, crashing a vehicle trapping the driver inside this happening just north of todd road in santa rosa on highway 101 around 07:00am sunday morning. >> the area shut down as emergency crews rushed and >> we observed that there was a vehicle that had that was underneath the tree. the solo driver that driver sustained major unknown injuries transported to a local hospital. caltrans arrived very quickly and fire and started to tree down. i saw

flash outside my window. >> yeah. so i knew there was something going wrong. >> santa rosa resident co have this a dangerous situation in his neighborhood off of college avenue. a tree cracked at its base snagging lines, knocking out power to residents for several blocks. i call the non-emergency 9-1-1 lab that it didn't hurt anybody. and know for sure. absolutely. nobody wants to get hurt. damage was widespread in santa rosa sunday with crews hustling to respond. >> predicted wins, proved mighty were lent lists. rain saturated the ground uprooting bomb rubble, trees across the city. you see a downed power line, please assume is energize. stay away from call come out and make the area l l- safe. >> never try to move it. never think that it's that, you know, it's on the ground. so it's not working. it's a very hazardous situation. you need to stay away. >> pg e spokesperson megan mcfarland saying extra crews were brought in to help with this mammoth storm.

>> the biggest of the season around noon sunday. more than 70,000 customers in the bay area without power as take you know, pg and e has brought extra resources. we rerouted crews from last hard-hit areas into the more area so that they can help with restoration. we pass a priest and cancer. the storm, a lot of material that softened and as a polls, wires, transformers so that we can restore hours efficiently as possible. but this is a big storm. they're saying it's the strongest storm of the season. there's been a lot of damage already and our next priority be on safety is getting that are back on for customers in santa rosa, theresa kron. 4 news. >> all right. we want to get you a check your forecast right now. we're taking a live look at the bay bridge on the eastern span. looks like the wind is calm down a lot from what we were seeing out there earlier. but we know it's still a bit of a danger out there tonight. gayle ong joining us with a more in-depth look to go. >> hello, dan. yes said the winds will still be an issue

and i am seeing the wind scale back just a bit down to the teens at this time, but expected to pick up in the overnight and for your morning commute tomorrow. as you start your week. so a couple weather headlines to tell you about now that precipitation has now transitioned into convection mode. convective remote. so that means that expect isolated thunderstorms still dealing with those dangerous gusty winds. as far as rain totals over the next few hours or so. we're talking about half an inch to inch and a half of rain. 5 inches up to 5 inches in the mountains. so we still have minor flooding concerns and trees down. lots of power outages. so here are the current wind speeds pretty breezy at the coast of point raise 23 miles an hour. 16 in san francisco, 20 and napa. but overnight that should be picking up as the high wind warning and wind advisory have been extended until 08:00am monday morning. so wind speeds for about 15 to 30 miles an

hour. gusts up to 40 to 60 miles an hour or so. some damaging winds still in the forecast overnight. and here's what was a causing all the rain? this is the last 24 hours. so what we call a surface low and that was just coming through over the coastal waters enhancing those rain totals. came from an atmospheric river and the national weather service says that we haven't had a storm like or a system of this kind since january of 2010. so pretty significant here is that activity at this hour. we are seeing some widespread showers. we did see a few isolated thunderstorms throughout the day, but you can expect activity like this to continue until at least tuesday. but the rain, a major impact, will have some flooding issues, though. but here is the futurecast model. so notice these lines here. these are the iso bars. and as they are closer, that means the winds are stronger. so this is midnight, as you can see, still, those lines are close together. 02:00am as well. and then this is

05:00am. and then i want to take you through 09:00am. so the winds are getting wider. so that means those winds. we starting to diminish after the rush hour commute. so your commute will be breezy and then look at monday afternoon. we're not. we're just seeing spotty showers out there. and then i want to turn over to southern california because that is going to be the next big weather story. and that will be making national headlines los angeles and santa barbara. they're dealing with life-threatening flooding concerns. so that is something to keep an eye on starting tomorrow. and this week, your 7 day forecast, we have some rain in the forecast. a chance of rain for monday and then tuesday, a little chance of showers there. and then i'll show you the seven-day here because we have dry weather on the horizon midweek and next weekend, back to you. >> gayle, thanks a lot. stay with kron. 4 for continuing storm coverage. scan the qr code on your screen right
