>> right now on the kron, 4 morning news, heavy rain knocked out power to thousands in the bay area as we're dealing with downed trees, flooding and road closures to. more affordable housing is coming to the south bay with details on when that's going to be a reality. and the niners and the chiefs touching down in las vegas is they get ready to kick off a week. festivities leading up to the big game. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning news at 7. >> good morning. and the countdown begins because it is monday, february 5th and this sunday is the big super bowl debut in the morning. not. that's right. we've got lots to talk about and we'll begin by going to las vegas itself.

we've got our own justine waltman standing by outside of allegiant stadium with. >> everything showed up yesterday. the chiefs came in first. they flew in and they're huge charter plane. they were waving their chiefs kingdom flag outside of the cockpit. so they're ready to go. they are blaring their celebration song, which, you know, a little too early for celebrations. but there are celebrations. song is the beastie boys fight for your right to party. so they're ready to go and the niners they are ready. and san francisco forty-niners touchdown in las vegas head coach kyle shanahan and they are here. they are hoping to bring the lombardi trophy

back to the bay area. they're looking for a win in 2020 when the niners play the chiefs in the super bowl. we all know how that meant. they lost that game. so with trent williams, george kittle, brock purdy, christian mccaffrey, all here, they're looking good and relax. they're trying go for some redemption this time around. there are a lot of fans here welcoming to las vegas. so they are excited and started to get into hame time mode. the teams are not staying near the strip to try to get away from the distraction and the bright lights in the casinos and the night clubs and all that fun stuff. maybe even the buffets. so they're staying at this really nice resort. and lake las vegas, both teams so they can focus on the task at hand, which is winning the super bowl playing probably the biggest game haven't

was kind of damp let its. >> definitely damp. hear little more than that here good morning. yesterday was a super storm, a super big wide because it was the most significant of the season so far as far as winds go. >> and as far as snow goes in the sierra nevada, too. so this is one for the books for sure. looking outside at the east bay hills camera, the camera is literally toppled to the side because of yesterday's strong winds. so maybe we'll get it corrected today. we'll see future cast of when the show's 30 miles per hour. peak gusts today. it is not near as windy as it was yesterday and actually calms down later on today. well, we're yesterday's peak gusts. pablo point up in marin county got up to 102 miles per hour down in lower elevations where we were all hanging out at sfo and oakland around 65 miles per hour. peak gusts, san jose's airport around 50 miles per hour. so it was enough to topple trees all across the bay and result in a lot of debris on roadways that you may still be encountering this morning. still, some showers hanging out across the bay area. spotty light for most of

us, although just east of morgan hill and san jose, we do have some pretty heavy rain up there in the diablo pockets of rain and thunderstorm development into the late morning and afternoon. so keep your eye on the skies. it's still going to be an active day. i'll be a little calmer in comparison that yesterday was upper 40's to low 50's oakland and hayward at 53 degrees. dublin livermore each at 49 degrees currently later today will be in the upper 50's for your highs under some continued chances of rainfall right now. all right, john, thank you for that. well, we're off to a slick start this morning. not as bad as yesterday, but >> certainly seen slight delays 40 minute run to the city than an earlier accident. they got that cleared off of a bridge. thankfully 7, bridge under 15 minutes to pretty dark in this area. our richmond, sandra fell bridge around 13, maybe taking some of your highways, got an accident along 24 westbound east, a fine 80 in oakland, 80's a little slow, but that's because of how the slow conditions are moving this morning. no accidents there, 1, 0, what a fine up to the

low part. just short of 37 minutes darya. james, back to you. thanks. a lot let's continue our storm coverage. that's the big story this morning. the fact that there are still massive power outages around the bay, hundreds of thousands impacted by this group was michael thomas following the numbers for us up in the newsroom. michael. hi, good morning, everyone. >> that's right. lots of people waking up without power. we're talking about over 200,000 who have been in the dark since late last night due to weather conditions. in fact, take a look. we've got numbers up on your screens. you can see just exactly >> what we're talking about in san francisco. that number is close to around 4700 or so. the peninsula. you can see it's around. 56,000 and then over in the north bay. that numbers around 72,000, almost 73,000 in the east bay has almost 30,000 and the south bay has around 72,000 with no power. now, take a look. this is a look at the current pg e power outage map. it is live and we'll start over in the east bay where there's again close to 30,000 with no power

right now, those yellow areas represent about 50 to 500 customers in that orange is about 500 to 5,000. even see walnut creek and pleasant hill. all really being affected over in the north bay. there's about 73,000 customers without power. take a look at all those orange and yellows. and again, you see those heavy pockets to spread out from santa rosa all the way down to marin county and again, they've been without power since midnight on sunday, according to pg need san francisco, only about 5,000 or so. but as we go down the peninsula, you can see that number continues to grow to about 74,000 with no power and you see that red pocket right there just below daly city and next to south san francisco representing more than 5,000 customers in the dark, another large area we see with no power over in the south bay. that number 72,000 customers, no power this morning. some who say they haven't had power since about noon yesterday. and you can see there is those yellow and orange spots and then there's

that red pocket right there. just near the alum, rock area and again, pockets of just below and east of that area pg and e says it is working on the issues and has restored about a half a million customers statewide since the storm began early monday morning. but as of right now, there is no eta as to when the power will be back on for everyone by this morning in the newsroom. i'm michael thomas story. james, we'll send it back to all right. thanks a lot, michael. well, let's continue our team coverage to looking at the aftermath and those power outages this time in the south bay. now we go to kron four's. will tran who is they're taking a loo >> thankfully they have the sun. it is up right now. so moving about a little bit easier. i drove around this area without street lights taken for granted without street lights. you can be quite scary driving around, even with your headlights. but fortunately, the sun is a

visibility improved drastically from say 30 minutes ago. i want to draw your attention to this intersection here. this is minnesota and lincoln. you see the lights are out and on the other side, that's willow glen's school, no lights there. so we understand a lot of school districts within san jose's. well, they have canceled school altogether. no lights means no classrooms. now, let me show you quickly a map of what i'm talking about at its height, san jose at about 102,000 customers in the dark. this is the south bay. dow is down to about 72,000 customers. notice i say customers and not people because the house is a customer and each house represents about 3 to 4 people. so that means we're sitting well over 200,000 or people still in the dark at very moment. let me show you video. >> you move around willow. glen, and that's my

neighborhood that i patrolling this morning. this is video i shot at around 5 o'clock in the morning. same situation. what a big difference. sunlight versus no light makes. look at how dark it is at that particular time. the iponly light that was on was th safe way, which they have their own generator. many people don't have their own generator so they had to suffer in the dark throughout the overnight hours. but they did make a difference right now. they're sitting at around 72,000 customers, some 30,000 customers did get their lights on in the overnight hours. pgd doing their best, but probably will not have that power back in time for people to make their coffee in the morning and head to. definitely not school, but at least had to work a little bit grumpy this morning. >> all right. thanks a lot. we'll it is 7.11, john. yeah, we still have some showers across the bay area not nears heavy as it was yesterday, but

stepping outside yesterday was like holding yourself up sometimes. >> today not going to be near as windy, thankfully for that. and although we still see some storms, the heaviest of rainfall is really shifted to southern california. worse. the flooding risk down. their snow continues to pile up in the sierra nevada. back here at home. it's going to be spotty showers and thunderstorms possible today. it actually see some really heavy rain just east of san jose and morgan hill as well as up in the santa cruz mountains have a heavier pocket right between mountain view in san jose towards sunnyvale and santa clara right now. also some light showers here and there from danville, stretching down through the tri valley. we will continue to see these pockets of rain and thunderstorm development on into the late afternoon and into sorry, late morning into early afternoon. here you go. one, 30 pm right around san leandro pocket of heavy rain coming down right there. just keep a close eye on radar throughout the course of the day and into the evening tonight. rainfall today going

to be on the lighter side anywhere between a 10th and quarter of an inch of rain. all just depends on if you land under one of those thunderstorms still under flooding risk. we do have flood warnings, especially notable in red up in sonoma and napa counties until 10:00am. but the worst of flooding risk is in southern california. the national storm prediction center has a rare high risk of flooding for much of los angeles and orange counties through the day today. winds, as i've already mentioned, are going to be a whole lot calmer and actually calming even further into the evening tonight. but the good news there and a winter storm warning in the sierra technically expires at 10:00am today. we'll still see new snowfall all the way through tomorrow. up in the sierra temperatures today are going to be in the upper 50's that are very warm us just shy of 60 for most of us. and we remain thatoway for much of the rest of this forecast. chance of showers and thunderstorms this afternoon and that chance of showers does continue through midweek before a drier and much more inviting looking weekend,

right? all right, john, thank you for that's still pretty slow. go along. highway 4. >> 88, 80 as you're traveling to hayward and fremont 2, 1 along the peninsula signed up. seen improvement and along 2.80, in the south bay, you seen slight delays. well, it's a wet morning. so a lot of people driving slower. more caution. you need to exercise that, of course, 15 minutes into the city right now. no accidents on the bay bridge, san mateo bridge. no accidents there. still about 15 checking on a drive times in about 24 minutes. kraken out towards the maze. 101 of the south bay. 85 to menlo park. just short of 37 minutes. darya. james, back to you. >> all right. thank you very much. now let's talk a bit about some of the problems we're seeing outside right now. highway 9 closed near saratoga. in fact, we've got some file video as you can see there on the screen from the last storm. all of the roads are closed to mudslides and debris much like what you see here. caltrans says there's no estimate right now on when that road is going to burry open. meanwhile, as we head over to emeryville, we've got

a look at some geese. take a quick look here. the emeryville police department posting on their instagram now a video of a pair of geese enjoying a water main parfait. we'll have that up here shortly. but water main break there ybu see it caused a little bit of flooding in front of homes in that adeline street. that was yesterday morning. you know, even the guy is trying to make the best of a stormy situation here. they my what they know about the storm right there to see water and they love it. all right. 7.17 is the time. all right. now let's head out to new york. we see jane king there live at the nasdaq. we're going to chat with her here in just a little bit. we also have some other news this morning overnight, senators releasing newly anticipated 118 billion dollar package to impose tougher immigration and asylum, larry. so this is another story we've been following this morning to see where that goes. our dc correspondent reshad hudson. >> has the very latest from washington.

>> house speaker mike johnson says that the bill coming out of the senate that deals with border security is dead on arrival in the house. he says the bill doesn't go as far as he would like it to when it comes to securing the southern border. now, some senate democrats and republicans are pushing back on that claim. >> we all know that the border is broken. >> after months of negotiations, the senate finally released the details of its border security bill senate majority leader chuck schumer called the bill transformative. this is one of the most important pieces of legislation >> that the senate has seen in years. the 118 billion dollar package would beef up border security and immigration enforcement while sending more aid to israel tie one in ukraine. we all know it's the right thing to do. we all know it's very much needed. we all know. had a lot of the future of america depends on this. house speaker mike johnson opposes the bill saying it doesn't go far enough to

secure the border. i've been saying what the requirements are to fix the problem. i don't care if they call the legislation hr to or not. what we're saying is you have to stem the house democratic leader hakeem jeffries says the senate is taking the right approach. the responsible approach is a comprehensive one to address america's national security priority. and senate majority leader chuck schumer says the senate could vote on that bill in the coming days. >> all right. well, for your money this morning, mcdonald's has upgraded its burgers and the fed chair has apparently a is urging patients when it comes to interest rate cuts. we've got jane king standing by live out in new york at the nasdaq with more. good morning, jane. hi, james. good morning. as the federal reserve chair, jerome powell was on 60 minutes last night. he said >> interest rate cuts won't be coming soon as the fed is wary about slashing rates too soon. >> now the federal reserve repeatedly said they want inflation at 2%. but the actual numbers about 3 and a

got it all chopped up and cleared away. they do any more work. they need to do today. if there's a little break, which is good. we've been seeing trees go down. power outages. as we've been covering on the kron 4 morning news all around and look at this. this is from santa clara county from the fire department there responding to loyola firefighters. they responded to this 2.80, at magdalena trees. do a debris clogging the side of the highway. there created are significant traffic, a prom where the there was a hazard. they had to move all of that and make sure, though flooding would be eased in that area. those 2 lanes were closed on 2.80 so they could clean the roadway. they did that back open again this morning. yeah, good morning, everyone. i'm michael thomas live in the newsroom with details about newsroom with details about the hundreds of thousands of ( ♪♪ )

>> 7.28 is the time right now and we're checking out the weather. that's a big focus. said the day after the big storm looking at the the storms that are yet to come sullivan. and john has a breakdown of what we can expect from this point on a john. yeah, it's still looking active out there. that's for sure. but hey, a lot calmer than yesterday and pretty much every way, which is good news because yesterday was to stormy a lot of trees down across the bay pairing of the wind and the rain right now looking at radar, we still have some activity out there, including down in the south bay will start with this. look at the north bay, the east bay, fairly quiet. some spotty moderate showers, although further south san jose, as you're heading down towards morgan hill, you've been encountering some pretty substantial rainfall right at the intersection of 85 101,

definitely picks up as you head up into the hills, just east of 101. now, as far as we go in futurecast, we'll continue to see spotty showers throughout the course of the day and a chance of a late morning early afternoon. thunderstorms to watch out for. so keep a close eye on the skies. as far as winds go. it's a lot calmer than yesterday, which is a bit of good news. 30 miles per hour. gusts today. yesterday's peak wind gusts were as much as 100 miles per hour on the top of some of our mountains. so this is a nice bit of relief compared to where we were as far as temperatures go later today, upper 50's for your daytime highs. right now we're in the mid 50's. so not a bad start to the morning. all right, john, thank you for that what are certainly slowing you down here. >> on monday morning, 17 minutes as you're traveling into the city this morning. last time we checked in, we're still under 15, 17 along the san mateo bridge. so we are steadily growing as the hours go on 40 ronnie, you can see the rain on the lens here. so, you know, things are very slick. i can see that reflect on the ground. our highways,

lot of red and orange starting to build along 80's traveling to richmond. if you're traveling to hayward, will 8.80, and highway 4, even in the south bay, like john, just mention along 2.80, these are a little slow and sluggish. sorry. james, back to you. >> let's get back to the big story this morning, which is the cleanup and the fallout from the storms yesterday. a lot of people still don't have power this that's one of the biggest fallout, right crawford's michael thomas keeping an eye on the numbers on the restoration, which hopefully will happen sooner rather than later. michael. >> hi, good morning, everyone. well, we're hoping that it will come soon. but right now we're still looking at over 200,000 customers without power since last night due to weather. now, this is causing major issues not only for schools, but also possibly businesses. take a look. we've got numbers up on your screens. you can see exactly what they are in san francisco. there's about 4700 with no power, the peninsula. there's about 56,000 with no power. the north bay, almost 73,000, the east bay, almost 30,000 and the south bay around 72,000. again, no power

at all. and take a look. this is a live map of the pg e power outage. areas and we'll start over in the east bay where there's again close to 30,000 with no power. you see those yellow areas that represent anywhere from 50 to 500 customers and that orange area that represents 500 to 5,000 customers with no area. so you can see many of the walnut creek and pleasant hill being affected. and it's, you know, gotten smaller over the last few hours. but over in the north bay, we're still around 73,000 customers with no power. and again, you see those heavy pockets of both orange and yellow spread out all the way from santa rosa down to the marine area been without power since about midnight sunday morning pg and e says now in san francisco, there's only about 5,000 without power right now, but that number continues to grow as we go down the peninsula, you can see more pockets of orange and yellow. and that's it. almost 74,000. people without power in those areas.

again, you see that pocket of red there just below daly city and next to south san francisco representing more than 5,000 customers in the dark in that specific area. another large area is over down in the south bay that sit around 72,000 customers with no power this morning. some say they haven't had power since about noon yesterday. and you can see just how spread out those pockets of power outages are. and again, you see that yellow and orange and that large pocket of read over in the east area just below alum rock pg and e says right now they are working to restore things when it comes to numbers statewide, they see that they've already restored over a half a million people's electricity since yesterday morning. but when it comes to the bay area, will they say that they do not have an exact eta? but i can say those numbers have been coming down throughout the morning, but it's been stepping around over 200,000 for the last 2 hours as we get more information, we'll keep you updated area. james, send it back to you. >> all right. thank you very

much, michael. and let's go to the south bay where we have video from the san jose fire department rescuing several people and some dogs from the guadalupe river. quite the operation there. the fire department posted this on acts they say don't attempt to drive through low-lying water because >> you make it stop yet. it happens every big storm. we see something like this cover. sarah stinson has more. >> the heavy rain and wind gusts have brought down trees across the san jose area. and we're seeing that right here la grande drive. you can see some of the branches that are left in the aftermath. >> it is been so much wind in some of the trees around here are shallow rooted or very brittle, strong wind and heavy rain caused a tree to crash down on a townhome on rocky creek court in san jose sunday morning. jonelle crane lives next door. there was loud sound and the building shook a little crane says they fully

the couple and dog living there didn't get hurt with the massive tree did destroy their roof and hit a gas line. neighbors came banging on my door saying there's a gas leak. there's a gas leak we have to get out of. here was just everywhere. and it king through their garage, got a little bit of their bedroom. they were fine. >> but it surprised all of us. so we packed everything up. but the fire department came and said everything's fine, turn off their gas on top of it all cream is one of thousands of pg e customers in the san jose area. >> who spent the day without power damage from the storm could be seen throughout the area just down the street on mount pleasant road. a power pole fell. traffic lights were out at several intersections in a tree was blocking a lane on east capitol expressway. a safeway on tully road closed early because of the power outage in employees says their generator wasn't working so they couldn't stay open. crane says she's prepared for the outage. she's got a plan to

stay warm. the gases on and i have a fireplace and probably going to run that tonight to stay warm. but i got 2 cats. they're going that warmers. i'm sara stinson reporting in san jose kron. 4 news. >> san francisco below or truce, as you can see here had their hands full of trees that have fallen out of the had to chop up and haul away. this is a giant eucalyptus tree that went down in the storm on clarendon avenue and john stone drive. the trees are vulnerable to falling down because not only of the wind which was whipping yesterday, but the ground is saturated already from the rain that we've got more. and this is basically what happened. if you see downed tree branches are down trees, you can call 3, 1, 1, and crews will come and clean it up. and take a look at this video from san francisco along the embarcadero. and now you can see the wind because you need trees to see out there. we're

going look at this that wind advisory has been extended into this morning. >> so you can't expect that you may have a gusty ride to work depending on if you take the bridge. i was over the golden gate and jobs explained that i was with the wind. so i didn't feel it blowing me sideways. look at this on the peninsula, winds of up to 70 miles an hour yesterday in some spots. this is half moon bay, miramar beach. and those gusty conditions creating hazardous surf and just white caps in the water. i saw a lot of that yesterday, >> well, happening today, san francisco city officials are expected to announce their public safety plan for lunar new year at a press conference at noon today. community leaders are set to offer tips on how visitors can protect themselves from everything from burglary to robbery other financial crimes. while festive season is underway, the news conference will be led by board of supervisors. president aaron peskin along with supervisor connie chan and trying to town leaders as well. well, a brazen retail

theft in the middle of the day leads to a pursuit throughout napa county ending in the parking lot of 6 flags was on saturday that police were alerted to the fact that 2 men were clearing an entire wall of purses at a kate spade store in napa out at the factory outlets. the 2 suspects sped off in a white bmw. they were later spotted by an american canyon police officer who then chase them along highway. 29. the car was later found in the 6 flags parking lot. the suspects were identified as raymond rodriguez and jaden smith. they're both now been booked at the into a napa county jail. >> it's 7.38, and campbell city officials are saying the more affordable housing is coming to the south bay and there's their big announcement. construction is going to begin at the winchester station between but and camden avenue, new 90 units will go there. you can see artist's renderings here of what the look like. this will help unsheltered families in santa clara county and it comes at a time when they say the homeless crisis in that

there today by comparison. albion stormy at times is nothing like yesterday. look at the downtown san francisco, mostly cloudy, although some peeks of sunshine this morning, southern california is where all eyes are focused this morning of some heavy rainfall continues down that way. snow also continues in the sierra and not to be left behind in the bay area were also active pockets of heavier rainfall currently in the south bay. one just working its way over san jose's airport down towards downtown. also right around the intersection of 85 101 on the very south end of the city right there. pocket of heavy rain. as for the rest of the bay, some lighter showers around them. in iran. headlines in the richmond center fell bridge currently nothing super heavy elsewhere in the bay pockets of showers and even isolated thunderstorms will continue on in the late morning and early afternoon today. here's 02:00pm, some brief, heavy rainfall across the east bay shoreline stretching up to conquer towards 3. and this just continues on through the

evening commute and into the evening tonight. we just gradually calm down as the days go by tomorrow, going to be a little less active. although radar is still showing some potential, especially further southward. and as wednesday, much the same, especially southern areas could see a few light showers developing. as for today's rainfall, anywhere between a 10th to a quarter of an inch is possible. generally staying light or up into the santa cruz mountains, you can see an inch of additional rainfall still under flood watches and warnings through 10:00am today. notably for sonoma and napa counties as we are seeing higher water levels there on some of our smaller streams, flooding potential is really the worse for southern california. the storm prediction center still has the los angeles metro area under a high risk of flooding concerns as multiple inches of rainfall just continue to pile up down there. that's really the center of the storm at this point. winds a little bit calmer and calming even further into the afternoon. so all that is good news. winter storm warning soon to expire
