without rain to get ready today. yeah, totally. yeah. so hopefully at least be je ne and us in our own backyards. >> can get out there and get a little stuff that we still do have showers today. but it's just not going to be years heavy as the past several days of rainfall. we're you're look outside from hour looking down at the day, nice bright skies above san francisco. it's not so bright above the santa clara valley. nora, for a few areas further inland to we have seen some light showers up in areas like napa solano as well as calusa counties just north of the bay. and then we do have some shower activity sitting just off shore. the peninsula, a sign of those light to moderate showers that we will see an isolated doses later on today. current temperatures are in the 40's to 50's. it's staying cool out there. novato. you just achieved 50 degrees. san francisco and oakland at 52 right now. get outside with that light jacket. ready to go. enjoy what will be a much calmer day. i will go to completely dry day, but it is indeed a lot better. back to

you. thanks a lot, >> ok, time now is 10. 0, one. and new this morning, of course, we're talking about the very latest with the fight against rising crime, especially in places like oakland. and it turns out governor gavin newsom has decided to step in and offer a little help. kron four's reyna harvey is in the studio with more >> yeah, that's right. so the governor says he is deploying 120 additional chp officers. this is all a part of a law enforcement search operation. so the governor says this is a temporary deployment of patrol officers, specialized units in advance investigative technology. those additional officers, they're going to work with local law enforcement to crack down on vehicle theft, retail theft and violent crime. the governor's office says in 2023 violent crime rose 21%. oakland, robberies go up. 38% vehicle theft spiking 45%? well, mayor statehouse as the surge, a crime oakland

acceptable, says in a part of a statement, quote, the city of oakland is hard at work turning the tide increasing law enforcement investigations, creasing police recruitment and investing in community and violence intervention effort. i'm grateful for governor newsom for flying these critical law enforcement resources that our a game changer and helping his home or criminals accountable and make oakland safer. canines and license plate reader technology are also going to be part of the operation. the move will increase state law enforcement personnel and oakland and the east bay by nearly 900%. we'll send it back to both of the deaths. all right. thanks right now. >> 10, 0, 3, let's turn our attention now to the other big story. the power outages in the fact that we're still seeing people without power this morning as downed trees and power lines are still being cleared and repaired. yeah, we actually saw the numbers grow this morning just within a couple of hours because at 08:00am. >> the outage update was

85,000. plus outages reported and you can see outbreaks down here in the bay area with more than 36,000 customers in the north bay in the dark, south bay still has more than 28,000 customers that have no electricity peninsula. more than 16,000 without power. san francisco about 2200 and the east bay about 2000. so we'll have to wait and see if they can make some progress today. and tomorrow as we head towards the weekend, we'll keep you updated. >> meanwhile, let's go to conference michael thomas, because he's in the south bay where we just saw the numbers nearly double this morning to 2000 customers without power. take a look. >> there are thousands still without power here in the south bay in schools and businesses are now closing their doors for the second day in a row. >> take a look. this is video of what the area looks like near yerba buena high school which is just west of 101 off of leticia avenue. it's closed today due to no power in the homes nearby also have no power. you can see there are still multiple downed trees in the area. all sitting in the middle of the street tangle

together with power lines that they brought down with them. as of right now pg and e says the south bay has more than 20,000 without power, which is now day 2, 3, for some. we spoke with one resident who says he heard this tree fall right before his power went out and it's been on and off for days. >> when i heard i boom. and but i and everything. a candle in life. i mean, was on right. i think they would lie. and i think people. >> as we get more information from pg and e as to when this will all be fixed. we'll continue to keep you updated. that's the very latest here. the south bay and michael thomas. i'll send it back to you live in the studio and we want to take a redwood city because multiple trees and power lines are down there along highway. 35 and the chp give us this picture of the scene that they are trying to work on and cleanup so they can reopen the highway between bearable trow to highway 84, which is expected to be closed in both directions until this afternoon. >> felt news this morning. san francisco is apparently

extending its ban on street vending in the city's mission district because the city thinks is cutting down on crime vendors things is cutting down on their business. kron about 6 months i the future? let me show you video of what it used to be in the mission district. so for years, decades, people sold items on the sidewalks with little problems. it went on for so long. but according to the city over the past year or years, it's gone down hill to the point where so many unlicensed vendors they have gone into the mission district

sold stolen items. also all the while committing crimes like assaults and robberies where the city implemented the moratorium back in november, telling those street vendors you have to sell these items designated areas by the city. so when you could be license to, we can monitor the situation and 3, we can try to attack the crime problem. now, here's mayor london breed talking about the financial benefits that they're offering to those vendors. >> the vendors who we've been talking to, they have gotten financial resources. they've gotten other spaces. they've gotten free permits. so it's it's it's a lot of communication and we're actually paying a non-profit organization to work with them to ensure that we're addressing some of the challenges that they face. >> the city of san francisco is offering financial aid to the tune of $1000. the vendors, those 2 like it. they

opening night, bringing in all that super bowl excitement. the players really enjoying this moment having some fun stayed up a little bit too late. so i could go to talk about it with the here this morning. totally worth it, though. so let's go inside now to allegiant stadium because the kansas city chiefs and the san francisco forty-niners both there on the main stage. they were just surrounded by fans cheering for them. there's media from all around the world here. this was the first time we've got to hear from the teams since they arrived in vegas. they were not the only ones doing the talking, though las vegas mainstays care, a top and the blue man group. also here, the players trying to soak in this experience and the fun. it was really fun to see them as they were coming out of the tunnel holding their cell phones, trying to capture the moment they did field some serious and some silly questions. chiefs tight end travis kelsey got asked about the one and only taylor swift, his girlfriend and whether or not he needs another lombardi trophy to match her new grammys.

closed through tomorrow. you can see in these pictures exactly why they got it. a bit of damage to repair trails and the bridges and they want to make sure it's safe before they reopen it. the national park sedvice said on social media that the earliest they might reopens thursday that that's all contingent on how much more damage they find. so that date is flexible for reopening. we'll just have to let you know when we find out more. meanwhile, the silverado trail is closed because of trees that have come down power lines, too. the closure starts from deer park extends to glass mountain. the napa police department is asking you to avoid the area to they can get that cleared out. all right. so we are working our trying recover from sunday's storm next. one rolls in. >> that's john's not going to be that big of a deal. is definitely as much of a deal sunday was for sure. sunday was a rough one out there. you can see san jose. we do have some dark clouds overhead and we still have some unsettled weather across the region. >> southern california, you

never let go of sunday's rainfall. and for neighbors down in los angeles, they're still facing that flooding threat back here at home. we have definitely sense. come down. yesterday was still active, but not as bad as sunday. and today will be much the same still active. but as you can see is you're looking out your window. it's a mix of clouds and some spots of sun. we do have showers sitting immediately to the southwest of us and some of that activity does build in across the bay this afternoon. if you look closely on radar, you can see those spots of green popping up and staying with us, especially for inland areas in the south bay. as we move into the latter part of the day today. so just keep your eye on the radar and some of those dark clouds building in tomorrow. activity ramps up for just one more day. we see a cold front passing through. we're result in some late morning light to moderate showers across the bay and then really picking up around noontime with some heavy rain passing right across the region as that cold front sweeps across will see unsettled weather for the rest of the day after that as well.

with a break from the rain looking likely to start around 03:00pm to 04:00pm. and after that for a few hours, then we really truly get a break from the rain starting thursday into the weekend. if you have plans for getting outside for the big game, it's going to be really nice for it. friday through sunday. now, low pressure on the outs in the days to come high pressure ridge building in. that's why we have this pattern change ahead of us. rainfall forecast after an inch or a sorry quarter of an inch to a 3rd of an inch tomorrow. we're done with it for a while. a well earned break early at this point. winds a whole lot calmer than they have been as well. today's daytime highs will be comfortably cool some mid to upper 50's. nobody quite getting up to 60 degrees. although a few of us will get close like down in san carlos, up to 58 today, south bay temperatures also in the mid to upper 50's much as you'll see across the east bay too. mid 50's for the tri valley hayward. 56 oakland, 57 while sonoma and napa at 57 santa rosa and petaluma each at 58 today. log

tomorrow, temperatures fall just a little bit. some midday rainfall for you and will be heavy at times after that. we smooth sail into the weekend and just in time for those backyard barbecues. james, love that forecast. thank you very much, john. 10, 17, the time in the north bay, santa rosa. police have arrested a teen who they say came onto a high school campus. >> apparently intoxicated in armed with a knife. so this happened at montgomery high school yesterday morning. police got a call about somebody wearing a ski mask wandering on campus asking students for their social media information. they eventually found that suspect who turned out to be a 16 year-old boy at a nearby grocery store with a half empty bottle of alcohol. the parent of one of the students at the school told police the suspect a cost of her son off of campus and was apparently armed with a knife at the time. although officers didn't find that knife on the suspect at the time of the arrests. but police are investigating. new this morning. a pedestrian was killed monday evening on

interstate 5.80. this was in hayward, according to the chp, they were sent to the area of maddux apartments at about 06:00pm to a report of 2 cars that got into a crash involving a male pedestrian. the man died because of his injuries. the chp believes that man may have been involved in a separate crash on 5.80, westbound before he was struck and killed. the whole thing is still under investigation. >> it's 10, 18 right now. and healdsburg senator mike mcguire was officially sworn in as the state's new president pro tem. yeah. a new senate leader a ton wallace reports on what mcguire says he hopes to do while in that role. >> while to some of this could seem like inside baseball. but keep in mind, the senate president pro tempore is one of the most powerful positions here at the state capitol. and now mike mcguire says he's ready to get to work. >> the duties which i'm about to interview for lake tahoe. >> with that carrying his

young son, connor, mike mcguire officially becoming california's 49th senate president pro tempore and influential role. that in essence is the leader of the california state senate. it was an emotional moment for this 4th generation, california that he spoke in front of the entire legislature and high-profile guests, including governor gavin newsom and former governor jerry brown mcguire saying he never imagined he would make it to this day. we didn't come from a family with money as a kid from a broken home and rhule. california raised by divorce. we're coming >> gave everything she had to put. food on our table. >> and a roof overhead and mcguire credits the very state of california for helping him to get to where he is today, a democrat. he served in the legislature since 2014 representing a largely ruled district spending all the way to the california oregon border. now, as he takes over the senate, president pro tem role from san diego, democrat toni atkins following her 6 year tenure. mcguire says he's looking ahead in the state. he believes is doing well on many

fronts. california is america's economic engine. our state game 3.2 million jobs since 2020. >> we are investing more in our kids public schools than ever before. and it's about time. but we've got big challenges. one of the biggest challenge is he says needs urgent action. homelessness. >> we know that this crisis is appalling and it's an acceptable other issues on his list. we're going to policy package this year focused on retail theft in the plan to help combat the fentanyl crisis. are you ready to go? california looking over all that? a protective multi-billion dollar deficit when budgets get tough at home, families have to buckle down and live within their means here at the state. we know that we're going to have to buckle up because we know that tough decisions lie ahead by tough projections. mcguire says he's optimistic, never going to stop fighting to make the promise of the golden state possible for every californian of the golden state. and that's get out

>> we're back at 10. 24 new this morning. the department of education has a new strategy now to help students dealing with financial aid headaches. the agency announced its new fafsa college support strategy on monday. and that's the whole point is to provide resources to help students complete the fafsa form and prepare for the college process and help colleges process student data faster. this comes after that rocky rollout of what was supposed to be a simplified fafsa form. but it came with delays in processing error. so it didn't quite go as smooth as everybody wanted. the

out there at a beautiful view over san francisco right now. some of my web cams have been showing sunshine while others have been a little bit cloudier, too. we're not guaranteed a dry day today because there will be some ioolated showers this afternoon, most likely for inland areas like just east and south of san jose on up through the tri valley and on up into solano county. these areas in here watch out for maybe even a roll of thunder later on. we've already seen sprinkles this morning in solano county. some light showers in that direction as well as santa clara county and some offshore showers as we speak. current temperatures are in the 40's to 50's. it's been a slos movements on the warmer side of things. even with all that sunshine, a cooler air mass is in place. you've got that crisp, feel to it outside temperatures later today do reach into the mid to upper 50's amid that slight chance of showers. back to thanks a lot, john. 30 in the south bay. people are fighting against a plan to open a new costco. >> in the western part of san jose. yeah, they apparently

don't want we've got more on why with kron four's justin campbell. >> moscow wants to build a store here at westgate shopping center on prospect road in west san jose. currently much of the buildings or damage and boarded up if approved by the city. the new costco store would take up nearly 170,000 square feet and bring 250 to 300 jobs. problem is it's an inappropriately sized. >> endeavor for this site. >> mark or is the leader of save west valley? a petition on change dot org, which is nearly 3500 signatures opposing costco's plan. he says he and his neighbors are concerned about increased traffic in an area which many people want. there is also a high school nearby bringing up safety issues for kids. according to the environmental impact review, the new costco would create 11,000 car trips per day. hollander says that doesn't mask the city's vision 0 plan, which works to reduce

traffic collisions and deaths. >> it really is the neighborhood coming and saying, please be more thoughtful, put projects in that. we're going to use that we care about that important with your own plans. san jose urban village concept where you have mixed live work. we have transit friendliness. you have the ability for someone to bike or walk and do their shopping. residents have until february 20 and to submit public comment. >> after that, the planning commission and city council will get a final say on the matter in san jose. justin campbell kron. 4 news. >> all right. you know what else you might want some say on is what muni is going to do. ridership is up, but they are facing a budget problem. yeah. and that's the difficulty kron four's reyna harvey here in the studio to tell us more about their plan to fix that yeah, that's right. so the good news is that for muni rider ship on some routes is already at pre-pandemic levels. the bad news is that they're already projecting and almost r the next 2 years and their

plan to make of the money includes something that you might filling your pockets. all the riders out there. so is looking to maybe raise fares as an option to probably, you know, with the fees right now, revenues are up. 56% of pre-pandemic levels. another option they're looking at is eliminating the clipper discount. they implemented that over 10 years ago. this will create about 5 million dollars for them or they're even willing increased parking fines at about 5% at their stations. also looking for public input on how to fill the gap in their budget for the next 2 years. so you can weigh in. there's going to be public mark, your calendar. that's on february. 22nd and in-person meeting march 2nd. that's at the richmond branch of the san francisco public library. i'll send it back to bill to the deaths. thank you very much. rain 10, 30 threes the time and we now know >> that 45 45 year-old man died sunday when a tree fell down onto his home. this was out boulder creek. you can see the images there.

investigators have identified him as robert bernard, the 3rd santa cruz county sheriff's office says that tree crashed onto his one story home on bear creek road, which is just off highway 9. there was another person inside that home. but firefighters say that person got out just fine. that house like yeah. >> there was also there was a man who died. he was shot and killed sunday morning in valais. whoa. >> the police got the call that there were shots fired on bonnie way and melody lane near northgate park. when they got there, they found the man who had been shot. he was pronounced dead at the scene. >> and in the east bay, a man is dead after he was shot in an oakland business in east oakland. this happened saturday morning on international boulevard. >> near the oakland public library, elmhurst branch. that victim has not been identified and we don't know of any arrests. >> well, developing news this morning, the body that's believed to be the pilot in last month's deadly plane crash in. and that ocean out near half moon bay has now

been identified. the san mateo county sheriff's office says crews found the body of loki ferry a floating near roscoe speech. that's the same area where the plane went down. also the same area where those 2 other bodies were discovered that of his fiance cassidy pet it. and emma willmer-shiles, those bodies recovered already. no word yet on the identity of the 4th and final victim. and authorities are still determining the cause of that crash, too. >> 10 34 right now. and still this morning, there are people in pacifica that don't have power because of the huge storms over the weekend kron 4, sarah stinson. take us a closer look at what they're dealing with this morning. >> it's extra. do work in areas of pacifica, other still without power, including at this intersection of picky in skyline boulevard. you can see the traffic lights are out. so drivers have to act like this is a 4 way stop. it's really been a rough 24 hours for people without power in this part of san mateo county,

hundreds of thousands of people in the bay area are starting the week off in the dark weekend. storm damaged hundreds of power poles and transformers says. >> thus far, the 3rd biggest single-day storm and pg history. so it's a really, really significant and large impactful storm about 24 hours into the outage. some pg e customers got the update. they were hoping for. attacks from the utility company saying power's been restored, but others got bad news. and i just got a message is going to be out 11 tomorrow. >> i would be 3 days, frustrated are very frustrated with pg and e because it was supposed to be turned on today by 4 o'clock. >> it's not power was still on at the are shopping center in pacifica. sos packed with people grabbing things they need for isabelle sanders. that was a hot meal topple. it's cold. it's freezing in the house. >> we can't cook because we have electric stove. we have

no furnace. nothing. >> people flooded coffee shops to use the wi-fi in charge their phones. the outage forced businesses to close for the day in a strip mall on oceana boulevard pg e crews could be seen working in the area to restore power for making progress. but we understand that there are still. >> lots of customers in the bay area without power. we appreciate their patience as they work to safely restore that patience was wearing thin for customers like harris who says pg nation compensate. >> for any losses caused by the outage. i would love for them to reimburse us for all the lost food that we're getting. and i would love for them to reimburse us for the last days of power pg and e says they have more than 3,000 workers repairing damage and restoring power. in fact. >> power just came back on at this intersection. i'm sara stinson reporting in pacifica kron. 4 news. >> well, in the east bay, we have thousands also without power after this power pole cracked in half monday night,

right along that nature valley road and homestead avenue there in walnut creek. it sent wires down to the ground, cut electricity off for people pg. e crews were out there all day yesterday trying their best to get everything restored. we'll keep you updated on their progress. the year of the dragon begins this saturday celebrations begin in san francisco. we have city officials now kind of warning about scams that happened during this holiday supervisor. aaron peskin actually took time to speak and chinatown monday. it was raining as you can see, but he sort of call that an auspicious way welcoming in the year of the dragon. he announced more policing and the bigger commitment to safety for this year's festivities. any also remind everybody to be more hyper aware of scammers as we get closer to the parade. >> ball and we sadly know about new financial nine's blessing scams, times of paper

lawmakers are going to hear from the head of the faa. and this is just days after what happened with boeing with a flag more concerns related to the 7.37 max planes. yes. so lawmakers are also expected to grill the faa administrator about the investigation into boeing's. >> the issues this just weeks after we know that door plug blew off an alaska airlines plane mid-flight. the hearing will include new reports of improperly drilled holes in window frames impacting about 50 planes that have not yet been delivered to airlines. boeing says the problem was not reported on any of their current plans are in operation. these were all planes that were still under construction. now that door plug the flow of mid-flight on the alaska flight. lawmakers plan to ask questions about possible quality control issues. with boeing production lines before that incident. and if the faa found any lapses. >> since it started its own investigation into the company. >> they have had repeated problems with quality and safety. and i want to know
