a showroom for the niners in the super bowl. i'm darya and james sport in the red and gold today as we're counting down to super bowl. 58. it's quickly approaching and what's becoming evident as we get closer is the question of who's going to be the stand out player. there's lot of analysis going in. it's obviously going to be someone on the niners who wins. so we have that to go covers. justine waldman is live in las vegas. >> she's beentake home that eli title of super bowl mvp. there are 2 names at the top of the list on the chiefs side. it's patrick mahomes for the niners, its christian mccaffrey. and we will start with patrick mahomes because

he has done this before. he has already won. not one but 2 super bowl mvps, including last year when the chiefs beat the philadelphia eagles. this one could be even sweeter for the 28 year-old. the chief said have such an up and down season, not the same dominant swear are used to seeing from them. the homes, though, peaking at just the right time for touchdowns and 718 yards passing in the post. so he's an early candidate. but no one can ignore the amazing season that run cmc has had in the bay. mccaffrey has had a streak of 17 straight games with a touchdown. 14 scores this season with 1459 yards on the ground. so mccaffrey is now looking to follow in his father, ed's footsteps and try and win a super bowl. >> think i've seen running backs that part in the playoffs that the most valuable players on their team seen running backs in the playoffs that are extremely talented and have a lot of value this is such a team

right? jones, back to you. randi, thank you. 604, is the time. and the breaking news update this morning. 5 marines aboard that military helicopter that went down outside of san diego now are confirmed to have died. >> the military says that helicopter went down tuesday night during stormy weather in the mountains just outside of san diego. they were returning from training out at creech air force base just northwest of las vegas. the helicopter was discovered yes erday morning near pine valley, which is about an hour outside of san diego efforts to recover. the remains are currently underway. time now 604. in the know a family in napa is grateful they're alive because a tree. >> came crashing down on their home in sunday's storm. splitting basically the house in half. it also nearly hit a child to a sleeping inside. but thankfully, again. >> no one was hurt from 4. sarah stinson has the story. >> high winds likely caused this tree to come crashing down from one side of the other first crashing into this

truck and then onto this home in napa next to a 6 year-old girl sleeping on the couch. >> it was the loudest boom. in the whole house shook, the roscoe family woke up to a tree crashing down on their home on franklin street in napa around 5 sunday morning. jane rasco says she was trapped on one side of the house. her husband and granddaughter on the other. so immediately i yelled to find out if they were okay and my husband was yelling from the other side to make sure i was ok, the tree landed within 2 feet of her 6 year-old granddaughter miraculously, she was not hurt roscoe and her husband also, okay. you know, you can see all those what ifs, but i am absolutely sure that god was watching over us watching over my granddaughter, watching my husband watching over rasco says they called 9-1-1 and firefighters helped rescue them from the house. rasco says the community has been very supportive there. currently staying with a friend from church. and this

is not the first time the roscoe's have lost a home. their house burned down in the tubbs fire back in 2017. so this is n%t her first brush with adversity. but in that case we could see it coming. you know, we knew it was coming. so we have time to pack. this one is very different. every day is a blessing. every day is a gift. >> this massive trees being removed from the home on thursday. the owner of the house says the city is removing 3 other trees from the street to make sure that this doesn't happen again. i'm sara stinson reporting in napa kron. 4 news. >> well, 607, is the time. and the oakland police department fired a probation officer over social media posts made nearly 12 years ago. the posts are described as a series of racist, bigoted and derogatory statements. police say they became aware of the post last friday they launched an internal affairs investigation and finally decided to fire that officer oakland police say that racism and bigotry are contrary to their core

values. 2 people were arrested in connection with more than 70 retail crime thefts in the bay area. san jose police say that jamie flores and thomas so targeted stores like nike best buy and target since last july. stealing in all more than $75,000 worth of merchandise police are crediting a retail fighting grant that they received from the state for the arrests. >> they go in court needed. they had a vehicle waiting for go in there. you know what, we're going to obviously things like cost more on. so really helps us focus our resources, whether feel the best, a gated for technological resources and personal to really focus on organized tell us. >> now, last year the department received 8.4 million dollars from the state to fund its organized retail theft. details 6, 0, 8, 1, of the show case can dart cruise ships. it's getting a lot of attention this morning, but not for a good reason. the

queen victoria docked in san francisco for the last couple of days has 139 passengers on it suffering from gastrointestinal problems. it's a lot of people that have taken now the cdc and the cruise line haven't announced any cause of this illness. local infectious disease expert doctor doctor peter chin-hong says the answer is probably what you're thinking. >> yes, it is very likely going to be no virus. norovirus is a virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea and you can have person-to-person transmission very famous for happening on cruise ships where large numbers of people get together on trump conditions. share a lot utensils, food, et cetera, apart from being very uncomfortable. fortunately, norovirus dozen results in a lot of people dying does have a high mortality rate. >> notes just enough to ruin your vacation. abby, be stuck

on this ship sickened? you know, i mean, nobody wishes that for anybody. so that's but at least they're, you know, safely looking at san francisco. that's a nice view. cdc is monitoring this. the queen victoria left san francisco. yeah, i just last night. so now they're headed on july >> 609, right now. and another big problem that we follow here on kron 4 is fentanyl. and as the state's crisis is getting worse, one lawmaker is offering some new legislation per the california department of public health. most recent data. more than 6400 californians died of fentanyl poisoning in 2022, that's about 124 people dying every week. this is why san francisco assemblymember matt haney introduced a new bill requiring all first aid kits in the workplace to have narc can, as you probably know that spray medication is known for its ability to quickly reverse an overdose.

morning. as for our sierra snowpack, we've done a lot of catch-up work from these last few systems. we are now officially above 80% of average in the northern sierra. so we still do have a little room to grow. but hey, this is a huge improvement from just a couple of weeks ago. today's daytime highs will be cool only in the mid 50's. we are going to be looking ahead to a game day forecast on sunday. that is really nice and comfortable. daytime highs here in the bay area going to be in the low 60's upper 50's low 50's rather in las vegas, though. so it's actually going to be warmer for watching the game here at home. then it will be in sunny las vegas. it's going to be a sunny and mild day area. low 60's on saturday and sunday. also into early next week. so it's an uphill climb to some sunny and mild weather right now. i'm john, thank you for that act in accident along 80 south of us very boulevard. >> this is in san lorenzo. so things are a little slow there along to 38 did not 8, 85, 80 in oakland, 13. still look nice and light. no major

of the year. whether or not you're a football fan. but you know what? we've got the niners in the super bowl. so the bay area is going to be lively. if you can't be in las vegas. well, you can host the super bowl party. my tip is perhaps potluck. that's always a winner because everybody spreads the cost. but there are those who enjoy hosting a party and providing all the goodies. so this is what you can expect if you're one of those people. so take a look at your screen. according to wells fargo, from wells fargo. they said that some things have gone up not too bad. chicken wings always popular. of course. if you want to choose the pressure out, you're looking at around $3 or $0.26 per pound frozen 3.17, and both have gone up anywhere between 5% and 11%, depending on the feed, of course, the crop feet. that's that chicken

>> 6.25 and the north bay, a 16 year-old boy was airlifted to the hospital after getting into a crash near petaluma at 03:30pm, in the afternoon yesterday. you can see the seniors. this helicopter responded to the accident on chile, know valley road. a teenager was ejected from one of the vehicles involved in this crash. he was airlifted

to the santa rosa memorial hospital because the location being so remote, that's why they had to airlift him. we know that he's in stable condition right now. in the south say a san jose man was arrested for stealing sensitive information about our nuclear technology. and he's accused of giving it to china. the u.s. attorney's office says that stole trade secrets on detecting nuclear missiles. he was born in china and became a u.s. citizen in 2011. investigators say that he used his position as an engineer and a lab to transfer thousands of files to his personal computer. if he is convicted of stealing trade secrets that he could face a maximum of 10 years in federal prison. california leaders are stepping up efforts now to make sure that renters are getting the protection they deserve. >> state attorney general rob bonta says the state is issuing 5 consumer alerts directed at renters and their

oakland and mayor sheng thao claiming that he was wrongfully terminated. >> the lawsuit comes almost a year after he was fired. >> fired oakland police chief leronne armstrong has sued the city of oakland, mayor sheng thao saying his termination was retaliation for speaking out against federal monitor. robert warshaw who oversees the oakland police department. his termination really had nothing to do with whether he did anything wrong with as a chief. actually come in any misconduct. he was actually terminated just because you have the courage to point out the monitor was leveling unfair criticisms. >> that opd and leadership. >> the lawsuit claims newly elected mayor sheng thao was intimidated by were shaw and bowed to his pressure instead of standing up for oakland, it's active litigation. and so i'm going to refer that to the city attorney's wednesday, mayor thao referred all questions to the city attorney's office. however, on it's absolute requirement that

my administration, including the chief of police, the able to work closely with the monitoring team. and to speak credibly before the court. but i am no longer confident that chief armstrong can do the work needed to achieve the vision. so today. i have decided to separate from chief leronne armstrong from the city without cause. i think they've got a strong case attorney michael cardoza has reviewed the claim and says the city of oakland should consider settling and fast to quite frankly, the mayor should have waited. >> for a vet in a full vetting of the case. a full investigation of this case before she fired. this is not the first time a fired police chief has sued the city of oakland and kirkpatrick who served as chief from 2017 to 2020 also filed a wrongful termination suit. and one i

think is showing people myself and armstrong many case before part we're speaking now. >> and they only way we're going to do that. and to correct wrongs of the stages to go through last process, which is unfortunate. and i hey, good to have to do it myself. but that's what's going on. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> 6.33, the time. and in the south bay, a san jose business owner has been arrested after police say he was selling drugs out of his business. police say they found this pink powder in the business and at his home, they say the powders known as pink cocaine or sometimes pink panther. it's a mixture of several drugs, including ketamine, meth and cocaine. police did not name the business but said it's a long blossom hill road just off highway 85. well, traffic safety advocates are urging the san francisco police commission to enact a policy that limits racially biased traffic stops. it

proposes banning pretext stops for low-level offenses, including failure to display are properly mount bisons plates, registration tags and driving with expired registration. the commission says most of the stops have been focused on black drivers for more than 2 years. the policy has been put on hold and community members say are they sent a letter to the commission requesting that the policy finally move forward for a final vote. the policy was set to be discussed at yesterday's police. a police commission meeting. >> 6.34 right now and in the east say a childs, an underage person caught with all of this stolen merchandise on barred. it was taken fremont target and bart's. deputy police chief was on the train riding the train near the san leandro station on tuesday. when he noticed a child with a bunch of merchandise and security tax. we still all the stops. turns out those were stolen items totaling more than $2000. after nearly 50 years

in the north bay and tortillas that i love letter to a factory is moving. they're leaving santa rosa and a kansas. the parent company called fledge flagship food group says that they looked at all kinds of options trying to keep the business open in the bay area. but they said after painstaking consideration, they just couldn't afford it. they say the santa rosa facility didn't own in land acquisition was high. there are all kinds of factors behind this move in maryland. lot of employees, 235 workers at that north bay plan those who work remotely, they're going to be able to keep their jobs because of this move. those who can't keep their jobs. they are going to be given a severance package. the move is effective march 31st. i hope i can still buy the lot or tia tortillas. i love those.

>> well, university of california optometrists are really rallying against what they're calling unfair labor practices. they picketed outside ucsf yesterday demanding higher pay better staffing lower patient wait times and good faith contract bargaining from the uc system. >> we are not able to last lost qualify interested better bay area opportunities. can't really compete with the other bay area. hospitals like kaiser are even >> well, yesterday, march day, 2 of their strike will be following the story. time now is 6.37, and new this morning. the oakland city council has approved the sale of the raiders training facility in alameda. the property is owned by both the city of oakland and alameda county. and right now the oakland roots in the oakland souls, soccer teams. i have been using the facility. it's estimated that selling this is going to bring 11 and a half million dollars for the city of oakland. the company

buying the facility would lease the facility to the soccer teams. so they could continue to use it. all right. well, we're now just 3 days away from super bowl. 58 in the 40 niners for the first time this week hit the practice field. yeah. which is kind of funny that, you know, we're talk about the radar dana. >> now it's on and the raiders hometown of vegas. i can't wait to see the super bowl and are sports kate rooney is our crew in vegas. the forty-niners hit the practice field here in las vegas for the first time this weekend. they made it through practice without much drama, which might be a surprise considering the way the week started with reports of the forty-niners being unhappy with the quality. >> of the practice field at unlv, soggy field, soft grass. meanwhile, the chiefs are over at the raiders indoor practice facility, but they were out basking in the sun and getting the job done. kyle shanahan said it wasn't worth it to him to change the team's practice schedule in order to move over to the raiders practice facility. i asked a couple of the play they're still hoping to accomplish this week
