8:08 am
this shoot a cruising this cruise ship that was docked for several days in san francisco just shoved off yesterday with a lot of sick passengers. the ship >> has more than 139 passengers as the queen victoria, who are sick, 139 passengers all with gastrointestinal problems. now, the cdc, the cruise line haven't said what the cause is. officially. the cdc is monitoring the queen. victoria left san francisco on 8 o'clock last night. now it's headed to hawaii. the doctor that cochran for spoke with about this is. seems to be a case probably of nora virus. yeah, it looks open on cruise ship, the likeliest suspect. all right. let's talk about the super bowl as we're quickly approaching super bowl sunday and one of the big questions that seems to be asked now is >> depending on which team wins, who on each team would be the likeliest to win mvp, know since the niners are likely to win that i go with mccaffrey. kron four's. justine waldman is live in vegas. she's got all of our coverage and she breaks it down.
8:09 am
>> good morning here from a very windy and cold las vegas. we got port on earlier this morning with the rain has stopped and the question today seems to be which team is going to win that lombardi trophy. but also people really want to know which player is going to take home that ali title of super bowl mvp. there are 2 names at the top of the list on the chiefs side. it's patrick mahomes, but for the niners its christian mccaffrey and we will start with patrick mahomes because he has done this before. he has already won. not one but 2 super bowl mvps, including last year when the chiefs beat the philadelphia eagles. this one could be even sweeter for the 28 year-old. the chief said have such an up and down season, not the same dominant swear are used to seeing from them. the homes, though, peaking at just the right time for touchdowns and 718 yards passing in the post. so he's an early candidate. but no one can ignore the amazing season that runs cmc has had in the
8:10 am
bay. mccaffrey has had a streak of 17 straight games with a touchdown. 14 scores this season with 1459 yards on the ground. so mccaffrey has now looking to follow in his father, ed's footsteps and try and win a super ball. >> think i've seen running backs are in the playoffs that the most valuable players on their team seen running backs in the playoffs that are extremely talented and have a lot of value this is such a team sport. you know, it's the biggest team game on the planet. to to say that. it's because of one player that the team wins. the super bowl is just not true. i don't think that's ever been so i want to maximize opportunities. i know that. >> they don't. they always come in be in every single super bowl. and so what i would have whenever i'm here, i enjoy it. i enjoy the week and i just try to go out there with the best football like i said a little bit earlier, make a memory that will last forever with a lot of guys that worked really hard.
8:11 am
>> so today that both teams practice and then they have a media availability, it will be the last time that we hear from them as they start to shut things down seclude themselves at lake las vegas. that's that resort. they're staying out about 40 minutes away from here. and then the next time we see them will be here at allegiant stadium for super bowl sunday. >> all right. we've got justine and the gang out there in vegas. and then we're hunkered down here at home. james holding down the fort for super bowl sunday morning. kron 4 morning news special. that's going to be a lot of fun. so stay tuned for that. all right. 8.11 is the time. >> and still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news, san francisco's mission district is ready for niner fans to come out and watch the big game on sunday. we'll hear how some of those businesses are getting ready. >> and san francisco's first indoor ev charging station opens tomorrow. we'll tell you what makes this one different. plus, we continue to follow
8:12 am
the latest out of oakland where fired former police chief leronne armstrong is suing the city of oakland and the mayor. we're going to hear from the mayor on that coming up.
8:13 am
8:14 am
>> 8.13 right now and it is chilly out there. you do need to know that it is great. but boy, bring a jacket. yeah. oakland, you're back up to the 40's now but fell to 39 earlier this morning while santa rosa's at thirty-one degrees. right now, below freezing there below freezing. yeah. so hopefully get the plants covered up there. but yeah, it is nice and sunny, which is definitely the will take the sunshine even if it does contribute to sometimes
8:15 am
are colder. evenings saw that cold fronts coming through yesterday. that's actually what resulted in our late morning rainfall. >> and behind it is the stash of cool air. but dry skies that we do have this morning. cloud cover and rain has pushed off to the east of us now we're kind of an in-between moment between that low and high pressure ridge building in right behind me. so today does stay cool. and we do see a slim chance of maybe a sprinkle or 2 late this afternoon. it's going to be left. nothing like the rain we saw the past couple of days, though, after today. it is smooth sailing on through the rest of this forecast with friday saturday and sunday bringing nothing but the sunshine and dry skies through the big game. as for today's rainfall potential, maybe we literally just a couple of drops trace amounts of rainfall possible. the sierra nevada will see a touch of snowfall, especially tomorrow for your friday. that could result in about a foot of it at the very crest of the sierra we student will have winter weather advisories for you of 70 southward. well, those around lake tahoe expired at 04:00am this
8:16 am
morning. the sierra has done a ton of catch-up work as far as snowfall goes, it was looking grim there for a while. but these past 2 systems have been major snow makers and we're sitting a lot closer to average is. so we're definitely a lot healthier of where we should be for snow pack. temperatures today are going to be mild cool in the low to mid 50's. pretty similar actually to what vegas is going to be feeling like come sunday. if you are flying out for the big game on sunday, expect low 50's a kickoff and some upper 40's by halftime. you know, in the desert temperatures drop off real quick. we will be seeing a low 60's to upper 50's here in the bay area. so by comparison, our temps in the bay will be actually be a little bit warmer and plenty of sunshine will make for very nice weather for getting outside for that backyard barbecue. great. all right, john, thank you for that. well, but a slow go kind of morning. we're pretty much busy. >> lot of our highways from the east bay all the way down to the south bay, even 1, 1, in the north bay as well. if yyu are going to be hitting the roads this morning, give yourself a little more time.
8:17 am
23 minutes on the bay bridge. no accidents or hazards there. but traffic has been slowly steadily building. 28 in around. 82 want to one. you see it's a little slow getting on and off the san mateo bridge. so kelly down in milpitas about 52 minutes. 85 a travel oakland. you're seeing traffic delays there might want to take some of the streets to alleviate some of that. 64 minute ride along one. 85 to menlo park and 80 cracking down towards the maze of hercules all the way in oakland. 34 minute ride reaches back to you. >> thank you very much. rain 8.16, is the time in the south bay. a san jose man has been arrested now for allegedly stealing sensitive information about our nuclear technology and giving it to china. the u.s. attorney's office says that chen guangdong stole trade secrets about how we detect nuclear missiles. gone was born in china, but became u.s. citizen in 2011. investigators say he used his position as an engineer at a laboratory. the transfer thousands of files to his

personal computer if convicted of stealing trade secrets, he could face a maximum penalty of up to 10 years in federal prison. there you see university of california up trusts rallying against what they say are unfair labor practices being used against them. they picketed outside ucsf yesterday. they're demanding higher pay better staffing, lower patient wait times and good faith contract bargaining from the other side of the table. uc berkeley system. >> we are not able to last lost qualify interested better bay area opportunities. can't really compete with the other bay area. hospitals like kaiser are even >> i said uc berkeley, but they really are fighting the entire uc system for a better contract. yesterday marked day 2 of their strike will continue following the story. it's 8.18, and tomorrow san
8:19 am
francisco gets a first of its kind indoor charging station for electric cars, electrify america. >> is opening a location in soma and it's a new kind of charging location that you're probably not familiar with. i know i'm not instead of sitting in your car and finding something to kill time with this is tricked out and has allowed free wi-fi. there are restrooms for ev owners. the president of electrify america says the station is also equipped with hyper fast chargers. >> of our stations here are capable of 350 kilowatts charging. so that means you get roughly about 20 miles a minute. so in 10 minutes of charging you get 200 miles of range back in 20 minutes to get 400 miles of range back. >> the ag, i don't even take more, not 100 miles the indoor charging stations. 24 7, and it's going to be open starting tomorrow. >> well, we are just 4 days away from the super bowl on sunday and when the niners kickoff against the chiefs in

las vegas, san francisco's mission district expected to be one of liveliest neighborhoods city. typically it is for the big sporting events. we talked to business owner who's getting ready for what's going to be a wild and fun night win or lose kron four's. dan thorn has more. >> the mission is often the place to be when a bay area team is on a championship run. local businesses say it's great to have a happening neighborhood for super bowl sunday, but hopefully things do not get too crazy. and the mission does get rowdy. but i don't necessarily think it's anything to be concerned shane johnson is general manager of elixir saloon on 16th in guerrero. he says the mission has a deep connection. the bay area sports teams and is expecting a fun crowd on sunday. a group of the i've seen the warriors win championships have seen that. giants take it all the i remember the 49 ers 2 super bowls. i think this a fantastic time neighborhood

sunshine. your view outside of san jose holding on to that sun just like the rest of the bay area is. and you can see that on radar right here. it is cold, though. temperatures having falling into the 30's for a lot of the bay still there for concord livermore, fremont and dublin. >> in santa rosa, you were below freezing moments ago. now sitting right at it at 32 degrees. we still have frost advisories for about 30 more minutes up in the north bay and easylto see why. when you look at spots like santa rosa that were below freezing, still 11 degrees cooler than yesterday. at the same point for both santa rosa and hayward. even sf down 8 degrees from the same 0. 24 hours ago now into the afternoon today, very similar feel into the mid-fifties. we do see a slim chance of a sprinkle or 2, which will talk about your full forecast, right? all right, john, thank pretty slow morning, which kind of surprising because we're drier today. >> 21 minutes on the bay bridge of that. we got up to about 29 minutes in the last hour or so. at least things are improving. there. still 30

minutes on the san mateo bridge are richer. center fell bridge is still around. 14 minutes, coli bridge because were a little slow, long in the north. a 35 minute ride checking on some of your highways that are covered in red, meaning a lot more traffic. 52 minutes cell animal pete is with 5.88 oakland little busy might want to take the streets are easy send it back to you. >> thank you very much. 30's a time and breaking news this morning in san francisco. police now investigating a deadly pedestrian hit and run in the city's south of market neighborhood. it happened along the 500 block of 6th street. that's where police say they found a pedestrian in the street suffering from life-threatening injuries. that victim died at the scene. police say the vehicle that struck that person grove away. so they're looking for that driver now, the area bryant and 6th streets is closed while they conduct their investigation. you can expect delays or avoid the area. if you can. kron 4 is sending a crew to the scene. so we'll bring you that in a live update here. hopefully at the
8:32 am
top of the next hour. so stay tuned. 8.31 right now. we also have a follow to a big story that we've been covering since yesterday here on the kron 4 morning news which is fired. oakland police chief leronne armstrong's lawsuit. >> against the city of oakland and against the mayor he's claiming wrongful termination. the lawsuit comes almost a year after he was let go. we've got kron four's dan kerman with the story. >> fired oakland police chief leronne armstrong has sued the city of oakland, mayor sheng thao saying his termination was retaliation for speaking out against federal monitor. robert warshaw who oversees the oakland police department. his termination really had nothing to do with whether he did anything wrong with as a chief. actually come in any misconduct. he was actually terminated just because you have the courage to point out the monitor was leveling unfair criticisms. >> that opd and leadership. the lawsuit claims newly elected mayor sheng thao. >> was intimidated by were shaw and bowed to his pressure instead of standing up for oakland, it's active
8:33 am
litigation is so i'm going to refer that to the city attorney's wednesday, mayor thao referred all questions to the city attorney's office. however, on the day she fired armstrong almost a year ago, she did reference the federal monitor. it's an absolute requirement that my administration, including the chief of police, be able to work closely with the monitoring team. and to speak credibly before the court. but i am no longer confident that chief armstrong can do the work needed to achieve the vision. so today. i have decided to separate from chief leronne armstrong from the city without cause. i think they've got a strong case attorney michael cardoza has reviewed the claim and says the city of oakland should consider settling and fast to quite frankly, the mayor should have waited. >> for a vet in a full vetting of the case. a full investigation of this case
8:34 am
before she fired. this is not the first time a fired police chief has sued the city of oakland and kirkpatrick who served as chief from 2017 to 2020 also filed a wrongful termination suit. and one i think is showing people myself and armstrong many case before part we're speaking now. >> and they only way we're going to do that. to correct wrongs of the stages to go through last process, which is unfortunate. and i hey, good to have to do it myself. but that's what's going on. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> well, traffic safety advocates are urging the san francisco police commission to enact a policy that limits racially biased traffic stops. it proposes banning what are known as pretext stops for low-level offenses. these are stops include. getting pulled over for failure to display are out your license plates or registration tags. driving with expired tags. the commission says most of the stops have been focused on
8:35 am
black drivers for more than 2 years of policies been put on hold and community member sent a letter to the commission requesting the policy finally move forward for a final vote. that policy was set to be discussed in yesterday's police commission meeting. in the south bay police arrest, a san jose business owner who they say was selling drugs out of his business. police found this pink powder at both his business and his home. they say it's known on the street is pink panther. it's a mixture of several drugs, including ketamine, meth and cocaine. police didn't name the business, but they said it is a long blossom hill road just off of highway. 85. >> the oakland city council has approved the sale of the raiders training facility in alameda. that property is owned by the city and the county of alameda and currently the oakland roots and console soccer teams are using it for their training. it's estimated the sale of this is still a t's going to bring in an 11 and a half million dollars to the city of oakland. and whoever buys that
8:36 am
they would lease it back to the soccer team so they could continue to use it. >> all right, now from the raiders, let's talk about the niners. we are just 4 days out from super bowl. 58 in the 40 niners hitting the practice field as we know for the first time this week. so all eyes are focused on that. yeah. and focused on the super bowl on sunday morning kron four's. >> sports reporter kate rooney is one of the many alive in crew reporters that we have out there. the forty-niners hit the practice field here in las vegas for the first time this weekend. they made it through practice without much drama, which might be a surprise considering the way the week started with reports of the forty-niners being unhappy with the quality. >> of the practice field at unlv, soggy field, soft grass. meanwhile, the chiefs are over at the raiders indoor practice facility, but they were out basking in the sun and getting the job done. kyle shanahan said it wasn't worth it to him to change the team's practice schedule in order to move over to the raiders practice facility. i asked a couple of the players what they're still hoping to accomplish this week
8:37 am
with a couple more practice days left before the super bowl. here's what they had to say. >> we put a game plan and last week before we got here. so put a little bit more in this morning. so it just kind of this crews get ready for sunday. >> you can always get is something. so i'm glad the playoffs. we have a really big into the body to someone like we know we can pursue play harder like the defense have. you know, we had a a few lapses and pursued effort on some peso this week in practice. every body trying to make it a point to get to the everybody like all 11 on the field, just trying to get to the ballroom floor. you know, i just played we played. kind of let thousands down a little bit postseason, we haven't been living up. no. so i stand and what we built that what i what people expect of us and we expect of myself. so just trying to get you back to that. >> kyle fixes things might change a thing here. there. what's more just like just stay home and, know, we are that we finished the, you know, the 4th quarter lions get internships game. we're like we're hot on the defense played well. the office may well specially as play like, just got to try to keep that
8:38 am
momentum rolling. we also heard from forty-niners general manager john lynch. he, of course, is a super bowl champion himself with the tampa bay buccaneers. he had a couple of words of wisdom for his players this week. he said you're not going to remember all the fun night you had out in vegas that will make you happy. 10 years down the road from now. what will make you happy is knowing that you locked in and won the super bowl. >> in las vegas, kate rooney kron 4 sports. >> all the fans are so excited, especially rusty hampton because he's been a fan his whole life. look at what he was little, isn't it cute? he was the baby's been a fan and he was at the 2020 super bowl with his dad when the niners face the chiefs and that didn't quite work but this time is going to work. and this time he's going to be there again. he bought his tickets right after the niners beat the detroit lions in the nfc championship isis. you know, the super bowl is not just a game. it's an experience. so it's worth it. >> that's why iran swear i live. i don't have kids right
8:39 am
now. so this is what savings or 4 at. i mean, the energy is just totally different. everybody is there. >> we tuned in. >> don't judge him just because you can't afford to go. i'm happy for you know, do what you want with the money and he thinks it's worth it. he loves the experience. he's going to be out there flying out on saturday with his sister and his brother-in-law. so they're making it a family thing, continuing his tradition. so good for him. and i sure hope he sees a when i we all when i love these stories about the 40 niner fans and what you know, what their stories and histories yeah, you know, it's the it's is just kind of like sending your kids to college and more i as we're that it is your team cobblers amanda hari as we talked to 40 niner fan in this case, they've been faithful for 55 years. >> 90 year-old martha camp has been building her san francisco forty-niners collection for more than half of her life. and while she's had to downsize since moving
8:40 am
