10:08 am
and prime conditions share a lot utensils, food, et cetera, apart from being very uncomfortable. fortunately, norovirus dozen results in a lot of people dying doesn't have a high mortality rate. >> it's just no fun to go through. the cdc is monitoring the problem remotely. as for the queen, victoria actually left the city at about 8 o'clock last night. it's on its way to hawaii. but again, more than 100 people are still nursing. >> that system and will be seeing why they'll be in the rooms now. >> 10, 0, 7, right now. let's get back to the super bowl. the big game is on sunday and we are ready for the niners of the chiefs faced off. the question is who will be the stand out player? because it kind of depends who wins. kron four's justine waltman takes a look. >> good morning here from a very windy and cold las vegas. we got poured on earlier this morning with the rain has stopped and the question today seems to be which team is going to win that lombardi trophy. but also people really want to know which player is going to take home that ali

title of super bowl mvp. there are 2 names at the top of the list on the chiefs side. it's patrick mahomes, but for the niners, its christian mccaffrey and we will start with patrick mahomes because he has done this before. he has already won. not one but 2 super bowl mvps, including last year when the chiefs beat the philadelphia eagles. this one could be even sweeter for the 28 year-old. the chief said have such an up and down season, not the same dominant swear are used to seeing from them. the homes, though, peaking at just the right time for touchdowns and 718 yards passing in the post. so he's an early candidate. but no one can ignore the amazing season that run cmc has had in the bay. mccaffrey has had a streak of 17 straight games with a touchdown. 14 scores this season with 1459 yards on the ground. so mccaffrey has now looking to follow in his father, ed's footsteps and try

and win a super think i've seen running backs are in the playoffs that the most valuable players on their team seen running backs in the playoffs that are extremely talented and have a lot of value >> this is such a team sport. you know, it's the biggest team game on the planet. >> to to say that. it's because of one player that the team wins. the super bowl is just not true. i don't think that's ever been sure. i want to maximize opportunities. i know that. >> they don't. they always come in be in every single super bowl. and so what i would have whenever i'm here, i enjoy it. i enjoy the week and i just try to go out there with the best football like i said a little bit earlier, make a memory that will last forever with a lot of guys that worked really hard. >> so today that both teams practice and then they have a media availability, it will be the last time that we hear from them as they start to shut things down seclude themselves at lake las vegas. that's that resort. they're staying out about 40 minutes away from here. and then the

10:15 am
start today. they not at all that sunshine. looks so nice from all of our web cams. this one from tower right here showing off some of those blue skies now says guys have been blue, but temperatures have been cold. so don't forget the jacket as you're getting out there. that low pressure system that scooted through is now out into the arizona, nevada and utah. while high pressure ridge builds in right there behind me. we're in a transition day. we still have the cool weather for sure. and a chance of a few very light in brief afternoon. sprinkles not amounting to much of anything. the final wave goodbye any unsettled weather. you can see if we do see a raindrop. it will be just that hardly anything in those rain gauges. as for the sierra nevada, a weak trough pushes through tomorrow. just enough to have a couple inches of additional snowfall up in the mountains. we did see winter weather advisories expiring earlier on this morning. and we've seen a huge dose of snowfall the past few days. ben, nice to see that snow stacking up in the sierra getting a little bit closer to where we should be for our
10:16 am
seasonal averages. as for temperatures today, most of us mid 50's, although redwood city are warm spot gets up to 57 degrees as jeff hayward and san jose. 56 for your highs. now, if you are heading to vegas for the big game on sunday, do expect cool temperatures for it. temperatures holding in the low 50's in vegas on sunday. compare that to what we have in the bay area. and we've got low 60's heading our direction. going to be a really nice feeling weekend to san jose city officials are taking a strict stance on homeless encampments along the guadalupe river looking to move them out. kron four's reyna harvey here in the studio to explain reyna. that's right. so san jose officials are creating what they call and no return zone for people remove from living along the guadalupe river trail. they say the area is a major downtown amenity and they want to make it more
10:17 am
popular place for people to walk through to revitalize downtown. so on tuesday, the city council unanimously approved $200,000 to remove about 20 people living by the river. but every move tons by april, the city did something kind of similar last year clearing dozens of tents in the area and they moved some of those unhoused residents and to some temporary and permanent housing across what we got a chance to talk to mayor matt mahan few weeks ago about his plans for the trail. take a listen. >> community didn't feel comfortable using the trail anymore. we applied for a competitive grant. state of california received 2 million dollar grant. we're able to come here, offer shelter and housing and everyone who was out here and then clean up the area. clearly encampment removed the trash. and it was a big effort. >> well, the city's parks and recreation department, they say moving those people are going to have impact on nearby neighborhoods since those people are going to have to find another place to now
10:18 am
live. the department says even when the city had housing available last year surrounding neighborhoods, steel had to absorb some of the unhoused people and were forced to leave the area because it wasn't enough shelter for everybody. now the city says the trail is a major downtown, an amenity. this connects neighborhoods like washington, guadalupe to businesses like a and also zoom. send it back to both the desk. >> thank you very much. rain at 10, 17 is the time in the south bay san jose man has been arrested now for allegedly stealing sensitive information about our nuclear technology and giving it to china. so the u.s. attorney's office says that chen stole trade secrets about how we detect nuclear missiles. gone was born in china but became u.s. citizen in 2011. investigators say he used his position as an engineer at the laboratory to transfer thousands of files to his personal computer if convicted of stealing trade secrets, he could face up 10 years in

federal prison. >> it is 10, 18 and tomorrow san francisco gets a first of its kind indoor charging station for electric cars. electrify america is going to be opening a location in soma. and it's a new kind of way to charge your car sort of luxurious. if you ask me, you instead of you know, now you're driver. i sit in your car outside. well, this is an indoor thing. there's a lounge, free wi-fi restrooms for ev owners. the president of electrify america also points out that these have the fast hyper chargers. >> all of our stations here are capable of 350 kilowatts charging. so that means you get roughly about 20 miles a minute. so in 10 minutes of charging you get 200 miles of range back in 20 minutes to get 400 miles of range back. >> the indoor charging station is going to be open. 24 7 starting tomorrow. >> well, we are now just 4 days away from super bowl sunday. and when the niners kickoff against the chiefs in las vegas, san francisco's mission district is expected
10:20 am
to be one of the liveliest neighborhoods around. oh, yeah, the parties are going to be fire. well, we're hoping that fire. i mean, why the soccer fans burning couches, win or lose, not back. and here's the deal. the football fans have been rowdy win or lose in this area and they wanted to be. >> fun for forty-niners fans but also safe. >> the mission is often the place to be when a bay area team is on a championship local businesses say it's great to have a happening neighborhood for super bowl sunday, but hopefully things do not get too crazy. and the mission does get rowdy. but i don't necessarily think it's anything to be concerned shane johnson is general manager of elixir saloon on 16th in guerrero. he says the mission has a deep connection to bay area sports teams and is expecting a fun crowd on sunday. a group of the i've seen the warriors win championships have seen that. giants take it all the i remember the 49 ers 2 super bowls. i think this a

fantastic time neighborhood venue. the chapel is hosting a huge watch party for super bowl sunday. we're the game on 22 foot screen tables in everywhere. we have a mezzanine and then we have 5 ares total. >> we are ready to go. safety measures such as security checks will be in place at the watch party. as for the outside party, it's expected to be lively regardless of the outcome. >> it's going is going to go down but that we win or we lose. so i think was the fire i think was he's celebrating think we see a lot action hoping to curb any potential chaos following the nfc championship game, caltrans and chp closed several freeway off ramps in the mission. >> union sfpd also limited traffic along mission and valencia streets. some mission district business owners say the fun may get out of hand, but the focus is on what they can control. >> at the end of the day, we're here to provide a good time for people don't want to reporting in san francisco,

dan thorn kron, 4 >> and as far as the trophy goes, it's there and in good hands. when she say james. yeah, cindy, yes, this is the man with the most trusted hands in the nfl. i mean, if you look at history hall of famer. jerry rice, received the lombardi trophy with the white gloves so that they could ceremoniously, you know, put it for all to see with the forty-niners. and she's really want to be holding on sunday after the game and he was asked, ok, so how would you prepare if it were the big big game for you? >> no one exactly opportunity that would have been a football game and playing that game in my head the night before. >> if you won a super bowl here in las vegas, how would you celebrated in our city after? >> well, i can't disclose >> well, he would have found some way of celebrating us to be shaw. absolutely. as the forty-niners are going to is

researchers at uc san diego looked at more than 20,000 people who reported self reported body temperature and depression symptoms every day. and they found that those who had high depression also reported higher body temperatures. they say this might mean that regulating body temperature could help alleviate depression. to put that to be clear, they didn't know if caused the other. you know, they there was no vice versa connection at all. so they just notice those 2 things seem to go hand in hand. they don't know the chicken and the egg of it at this point. >> all righty, then 26. and coming up next on the kron, 4 morning news. the niners hit the practice field in vegas for the first time this week. we're going to hear what they

>> it's 10 29 and it's very sunny out. and we are pretty excited. is the thursday before super bowl sunday. that's right. and the weather is going to be just this fantastic. on sunday. it looks like you'll be able to barbecue i happy for that party that i'm right >> we will definitely be all getting out there to one barbecue or another, at least hopefully spend a little time outside these next few days. looking at our camera at walnut creek situated right there on highway. 24, things are moving along just fine on this thursday morning. not just as far as traffic goes, but just the weather is making everything a little easier to that is if you don't mind a little chill. temperatures this morning did drop down into the 30's right now. oakland and redwood city still hanging out in the 40's at 48 degrees. santa rosa, you've got down to 31 earlier backup to 43 now. temps compared to yesterday, starting to even

10:32 am
another big story that we're following it since yesterday. really, we reported this more, you know, and that morning it was breaking news that the fire oakland police chief leronne armstrong. he was suing the city of oakland and the mayor. he says he was wrongfully terminated. yeah, that's his contention. >> it was about a year ago that he was fired and we've got kron four's. dan kerman with a closer look at the fallout of this lawsuit. >> fired oakland police chief leronne armstrong has sued the city of oakland, mayor sheng thao saying his termination was retaliation for speaking out against federal monitor. robert warshaw who oversees the oakland police department. his termination really had nothing to do with whether he did anything wrong with as a chief. actually come in any misconduct. he was actually terminated just because you have the courage to point out the monitor was leveling unfair criticisms. >> that opd and leadership. >> the lawsuit claims newly elected mayor sheng thao was intimidated by were shaw and bowed to his pressure instead of standing up for oakland,
10:33 am
it's active litigation. and so i'm going to refer that to the city attorney's wednesday, mayor thao referred all questions to the city attorney's office. however, on the day she fired armstrong almost a year ago, she did reference the federal monitor. it's an absolute requirement that my administration, including the chief of police, be able to work closely with the monitoring team. and to speak credibly before the court. but i am no longer confident that chief armstrong can do the work needed to achieve the vision. so today. i have decided to separate from chief leronne armstrong from the city without cause. i think they've got a strong case attorney michael cardoza has reviewed the claim and says the city of oakland should consider settling and fast to quite frankly, the mayor should have waited. >> for a vet in a full vetting of the case. a full
10:34 am
investigation of this case before she fired. this is not the first time a fired police chief has sued the city of oakland and kirkpatrick who served as chief from 2017 to 2020 also filed a wrongful termination suit. and one i think is showing people myself and armstrong many case before part we're speaking now. >> and they only way we're going to do that. to correct wrongs of the stages to go through last process, which is unfortunate. and i hey, good to have to do it myself. but that's what's going on. dan kerman kron, 4 news. >> well, traffic safety advocates now are urging the san francisco police commission to enact a policy that limits racially biased traffic stops. so it proposes that no, they want to ban what are called pretext stops. these are for low-level offenses like failure to display are out your license plate door display your registration tags or even driving with expired tags. the
10:35 am
commission says most of the stops that have happened in the past really been focused on black drivers. they want to change that for more than 2 years. the policy has been put on hold, but community members sent a letter to the commission requesting the policy finally move forward for a final vote. the policy was set to be discussed at yesterday's police commission meeting. in the south bay. police have arrested a san jose business owner who they say was selling drugs out of his business. police found this pink powder at both his business and his home. they say that powder is known on the street as pink panther. it's a mixture of several drugs, including ketamine, meth and cocaine. police didn't name the business. all we know is it was a long blossom hill road just off highway 85. >> it's 10. 35 and the proposed public bathroom and san francisco's know a valley is now estimated to cost $300,000, which is not bad when it was going to be over a million. it's going to look on something like this, which we've seen yeah, the embarcadero number. we went in
10:36 am
there it it wasn't anything fancy. look at it. but it's off cleaning whatever. so a very high. here's how to get the cost down. the city announced a donation of $425,000. a prefab units and labor. and that helped to bring down the cost. so now it's going to be installed in late summer. and then i guess that's considered a deal for what they were calling it like the golden florida cloudier some because it's so fancy and a call so much. it's hard to believe that. gets the money. i guess 10. 35 the time. right now, the oakland city council has approved the sale of the raiders training facility in alameda. that's going to bring in millions of dollars. that property is owned by the city of allen of oakland and the county of alameda. and right now the oakland roots and the oakland souls, soccer teams use the facility. the sale is going to bring in about 11 half million dollars for the city of oakland and then we're buys it. they would lease the facility, the soccer team so they could continue to use it. all right, from the raiders. let's go to the niners now as
10:37 am
we know they're getting ready in las vegas for the super bowl this weekend. things get serious because now they're on the practice field. really nailing down the game plan before they have the big super bowl held where the raiders new home is, of course. >> in vegas. it's quite the venue and we've got our teams out there in vegas right now. let's go to sports reporter kate rooney for the latest. >> the forty-niners hit the practice field here in las vegas for the first time this weekend. they made it through practice without much drama, which might be a surprise considering the way the week started with reports of the forty-niners being unhappy with the quality of the practice field at unlv, soggy field, soft grass. meanwhile, the chiefs are over at the raiders indoor practice facility, but they were out basking in the sun and getting the job done. kyle shanahan said it wasn't worth it to him to change the team's practice schedule in order to move over to the raiders practice facility. i asked a couple of the players what they're still hoping to accomplish this week with a couple more practice days left before the super bowl. here's what they had to say. >> we put a game plan and last week before we got here. so put a little bit more in this
10:38 am
morning. so it just kind of this crews get ready for sunday. >> you can always get is something. so i'm glad the playoffs. we have a really big into the body someone like we know we can pursue play harder like the defense have. you know, we had a a few lapses and pursued effort on some peso this weekend. president biden trying to make it a point to get to the everybody like all 11 on the field just trying to get to the barroom floor. you know, i just played we played. kind of let thousands down a little bit postseason, we haven't been living up. no. so i stand and what we built that what time what people expect of us and we expect of myself. so we're just trying to get get back to >> kyle fixes things might change a thing here. there. what's more just like just stay home and, know, we are that we finished the, you know, the 4th quarter lions get internships game. we're like we're hot on the defense played well, the offspeed well, specially as play like just got to try to keep that momentum rolling. we also heard from forty-niners general manager john lynch. he, of course, is a super bowl champion himself with the
10:39 am
tampa bay buccaneers. he had a couple of words of wisdom for his players this week. he said you're not going to remember all the fun it had out in vegas that will make you happy. 10 years down the road from now. what will make you happy is knowing that you locked in and won the super bowl. >> in las vegas, kate rooney kron 4 that'll make a lot of people happy among them. this bay area native rusty hampton. he's going to be at the super bowl. look what he was little. he's been a fan all his life. >> he was at the super bowl with his dad in 2020 when the niners the chiefs and all right, whatever that didn't work out. but you know what? this one is going to be great. and he says it's worth the money he actually bought the tickets for the super bowl right after the niners beat the lions in the nfc championship. and he says, you know, it's not just a game. it's an experience. he flies out to vegas saturday. he's going to be there with his sister and his brother-in-law routing the niners on in-person and we will continue to root them on right here on the kron. 4 morning news and
10:40 am
