in the east bay. the latest resources deployed by the governor and state attorney general to tackle the problem. >> from the bay station, you're watching kron. and news. >> thanks so much for joining us here on kron. 4 news at noon. i'm stephanie lin governor gavin newsom and state attorney general rob bonta are stepping up efforts to combat crime in the east bay. they say the california department of justice will deploy state attorneys to help prosecute suspected criminals. kron four's will tran is an alameda county with the latest. it's part of 1, 2 punch earlier this week. governor gavin newsom deployed. >> and additional 120 chp officers to help oakland and the east bay police departments like the one right behind me. the alameda police department trying to catch criminals, violent crimes, property crimes, burglaries, retail, thefts, to try to minimize that as much as they

possibly can. but what's the point of catching if you don't prosecute and find them guilty to keep them behind bars? and that is why this is the second prong of the approach deploying more attorneys out there to help district attorney pamela price. alameda county district attorney pamela price and other prosecutors throughout alameda county as well as oakland. keep those criminals behind bars. should they be found guilty? so this is the part of the punch that they want to deploy over the next several days. and it has the support, pamela price. and i'm sure many others in california as they have been very upset retail theft and violent crimes. it seems going up and up and up. it also has the endorsement of california state attorney general rob bonta for him. this is quite personal. so take a look at your screen. this is what he said earlier this morning. he says the east bay is my home

and i'm committed to ensuring that the people of oakland can live and work in a safe community. i welcome this partnership to ensure that justice is done so that oakland residents can thrive and prosper. so again, this has the endorsement of so many people with in alameda county as well as oakland. this will kick off and several days from now. how many attorneys will be deployed from the department of justice that still determined. but they're actually adding teeth to existing laws. back to you. the oakland police department fired a probation officer over social media posts made nearly 12 years ago. >> the polls are described as a series of racist and derogatory statements. police say they became aware of the post last friday launched an internal affairs investigation and then decided to fire the officer. oakland police say the fired officers actions are contrary to their core values. and the api community is

holding a rally pushing for increased public safety in san francisco. kron four's. charles clifford joins us live now from the city with the latest details on charles. >> there just a few days away from lunar new year, which is a time of celebration for many in the asian community. but many folks including the elderly in that community are worried about safety and crime. today, the city announced a new effort to try to set their minds at ease. >> in recent years, san francisco has seen an increase in violent crime against the asian american and pacific islander community. many of these acts have been caught on camera too often. seniors are the victims. many of our have a lot of fear about going out onto streets, have a lot of worries, but it's not just them, but it's also their families to on the steps of san francisco city hall. on thursday, city leaders called for a more holistic approach to the problem that would expand city services, support victims and make sure resources are available to ensure public safety that while law enforcement can help, the problem needs to be dealt with on a community-wide

level to think about the future in a way that is more about our community that is healthy. that sustainable. that is well rounded. there are strategies that compliment. >> law enforcement that make our communities safer. following the rally, the board of supervisors held a public safety hearing. >> to hear from the police department, other city departments on what they're doing to prevent violence against the api community. >> all right, back live now lunar new year is february 10th. that will be the year of the dragon. but for now in san francisco, charles clifford kron, 4 news. all right, charles, thank you for your coverage. >> and police are investigating a deadly hit and run this morning in san francisco, south of market neighborhood. it happened on the 500 block of 6th street. that's where police say they found a person in the street suffering from life-threatening injuries. the victim died at the scene. police say they are looking for the driver. in the south

bay. san jose d 2 suspects accused of more than 70 retail crime in the bay area. investigators say jamie flores and thomas 7, o so targeted stores like nike best buy and target since last july. stealing more than $75,000 worth of merchandise. police say they were able to make the arrest thanks to a grant they received from the state to fight retail theft. >> they go in court needed. they had a vehicle waiting for go in you know what, we're going to obviously things like cost more front really helps us focus our resources, whether feel best way to protect the logical resources and personnel to really focus organizer told us. >> last year the department got a 0.4 million dollars from the state to fund its organized retail theft detail. police arrested a san jose business owner cused of selling drugs out of his business. police found this pink powder shown on your screen both the business and the business owner's home.

officers say the powder is known on the street as pink pantr. it's a mixture of several drugs, including ketamine, meth and cocaine. police did not name the business involved but said it's located along blossom hill road just off highway 85. in the north bay. a family in napa says they are thankful to be alive after a tree crashed onto their home during sunday's storm kron. 4 sarah stinson reports the loudest boom. >> in the whole house shook, the roscoe family woke up to a tree crashing down on their home on franklin street in napa around 5 sunday morning. jane rasco says she was trapped on one side of the house. her husband and granddaughter on the other. so immediately i yelled. >> to find out if they were okay and my husband was yelling from the other side to make sure i was ok, the tree landed within 2 feet of her 6 year-old granddaughter miraculously, she was not hurt. >> roscoe and her husband also, okay. you know, you can see all those what ifs, but i

am absolutely sure that god was watching over us watching over my granddaughter, watching my husband watching over rasco says they called 9-1-1 and firefighters helped rescue them from the house. rasco says the community has been very supportive there. currently staying with a friend from church. and this is not the first time the roscoe's have lost their home. their house burned down in the tubbs fire back in 2017. so this is not her first brush with adversity. but in that case we could see it coming. you know, we knew it was coming. so we have time to pack. this one is very different. every day is a blessing. every day is a gift. >> and that was sara stinson reporting for us. the owner of that house says the city is removing 3 other trees from the same street to prevent this from happening again. all right. taking a look at all of you know, damage from that storm. let's talk about our forecast moving forward as we take a live look outside from our sutro cam. look a bit drier out there today. let's

check in now with kron four's gayle ong from morning hello, stephanie. s try indeed. so gives people a chance to do some cleanup after the storms. >> but we are dealing with chilly temperatures. the north bay coming out of a frost advisory this morning. petaluma is 32 degrees. one of the coldest spots and as you can see in the north bay, even to the east bay, down to livermore in the low to mid and upper 30's so we can expect chilly days like this chilly mornings and nights and notice our radar. we are quiet across the state. a lot of that unsettled weather has moved on east of las vegas and phoenix, arizona. they're dealing with some winter weather out there. so we have that low pressure system moving on out, making for a high pressure that's going to be taking over for the next several days. and it's going bring us some cool crest, daytime highs. but dry weather. as you can see, we're seeing blue skies out here, a different story than we saw the last couple days when it's been stormy. temperatures out the door. we're in the low 50's right now and mid 50's

elsewhere. right about close to our daytime highs and about an hour or 2, we'll be warming up. as you can see, we are already starting to warm up about 2 to 4 degrees across the bay area. wind speeds are calm everywhere else. just a normal sea breeze over there. so if you're in the south bay, you are one of the warmest spots today. here is your coffee forecast in san jose. 57 degrees. partly cloudy skies. all right, dale, thank you for that. a cunard cruise ship is getting a lot of attention for the wrong reasons. the queen victoria was docked in san francisco for the last couple of days. >> 139 of its passengers came down with gastrointestinal problems. the cdc and the cruise line of not officially announced a cause. but the local infectious disease expert, our local doctor, peter chin hong, he weighed in on this matter. >> so it's very likely going to be no virus. norovirus is a virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea and you can have

now just 3 days out from super bowl. 58 and the forty-niners hit the practice field for the first time this week. >> but for sports reporter kate rooney reports from las vegas. >> the forty-niners hit the practice field here in las vegas for the first time this weekend. they made it through practice without much drama, which might be a surprise considering the way the week started with reports of the forty-niners being unhappy with the quality of the practice field at unlv, soggy field, soft grass. meanwhile, the chiefs are over at the raiders indoor practice facility, but they were out basking in the sun and getting the job done. kyle shanahan said it wasn't worth it to him to change the team's practice schedule in order to move over to the raiders practice facility. i asked a couple of the players what they're still hoping to accomplish this week with a couple more practice days left before the super bowl. here's what they had to say. >> we put a game plan and last week before we got here. so put a little bit more in this morning. so it just kind of

pretty quiet statewide and all that activity heading out to phoenix, arizona. so we have some dry conditions at this noon hour, but we can't rule out an isolated shower or 2. so fast pouring it, too, about 02:00pm one. 45, you could see some spotty rain in the petaluma area around 3 o'clock. we're looking at rain and sandra fell san francisco pacifica and even some light rain in livermore. but that's just about it. not a washout. just some light rain, some sprinkles. and then by the evening, we start to clear out you'll see some passing clouds and you can expect dry days for the rest of the week for now. and let's talk about the rainfall we got. we are above normal in most of our bay area spots except for oakland. you're 95% of normal for the water year which started october first. so a little catching up to do. but yeah, we've got some beneficial rain but now will be warming up as this trough is moving out. as you can see, that's what's bringing us some high pressure here that will be taking over. and that's going bring us some

health this afternoon, a new study found that depression can be linked to having a higher body temperature. >> researchers at uc san francisco conducted a study with more than 20,000 people who self-reported their body temperatures and depression

symptoms daily results show those who had high depression. symptoms also reported higher body temperatures. researchers say this might mean regulating body temperature could help alleviate depression. to be clear, study did not indicate whether depression raises body temperature or vice versa. and other new research is shedding light on the effect of long covid on kids. doctors at children's hospital in colorado say in some cases, children can suffer from your logical gastrointestinal and cardiovascular symptoms. in the months after an acute infection. the report says as many as 10 to 20% of kids in the nation who had covid developed long covid. more americans turn 65 this year than any other year in history. the retirement income institute found around 4.1 million americans celebrate this milestone. this trend continues into 2027 and peaks next year. the institute also found this group of americans are entering retirement, wealthier, healthier and may live at least another 20

to this crisis. san francisco assemblymember matt haney demanding action to combat california's ongoing opioid crisis. per the california department of public health's. most recent data from 2022. more than 6,470 california has died of fentanyl poisoning that year alone coming out to an average of just over 124 deaths per week can happen to your loved one. it can happen if knowingly take a substance like fentanyl or can happen to people who are addicted and we need to be able to save those people's lives. that's why says he's introduced ab 1976. >> it will require all first aid kits and workplaces across california to carry naloxone, commonly referred to as its brand name narcan. >> this spring medication is known for its ability to quickly reverse an overdose. we have to make sure that this medication, narcan is available everywhere can save a life. his proposal comes less than one year after

governor gavin newsom signed laws to require narcan be present at california public middle and high school stadiums concert venues and amusement parks. but haynie who serves as the chair of the assembly select committee on fentanyl, opioid addiction and overdose prevention says more must be done and he's confident he has support from both sides of the aisle. this is not a partisan issue. >> republicans, democrats wer're we are all the impacted. we are all losing loved ones from this drug epidemic. let's let's make sure that we take on the drug dealers and yet have more access to treatments, but also still our responsibility to protect people and the best way to protect people and keep our loved ones alive. kids a lot is making sure that this stark and is it available and accessible everywhere? and should the bill become law? cal osha will be the state agency responsible for making sure all first aid kits in the workplace. >> carry narcan reporting at the state capitol. a tom wallace kron. 4 news.

>> or is your local elections headquarters? and this november, california voters get to decide whether or not to formally enshriied same marriage rights into the state constitution. well, same marriage is legal in california. same marriage rights are not officially enshrinrd in the state constitution. a proposal known as the freedom to marry ballot measure would change that. supporters say the measure is necessary given concerns the u.s. supreme court could one day overturn its decision to legalize same marriage nationwide. >> we know our freedoms are under sold across the country. so california, we're going to stand firm and strong and in training the freedom to marry whomever you and love you. don't just have to you can love them as well as we want it in bold in our constitution to say i don't care or a supreme court. >> in california, you can marry who you want. >> as of now, there is no formal opposition to this proposal. the measure needs a simple majority to pass. and a

reminder we host a debate here at kron 4 on february. 12th between the top 4 candidates for u.s. senate. we can watch it live at 7 o'clock here on kron. 4. you can also stream on the kron on app or watch it on kron 4 dot com. the traffic safety advocates are urging the san francisco police commission to enact a policy that limits racially biased traffic stops. it proposes banning pretext, stops for low-level offenses, including failure to display are properly mount license plates, registration tags and driving with expired registration. the commission says most of the stops have focused on black drivers for more than 2 years. the policy has been put on hold. community members sent a letter to the commission requesting the policy finally move forward for final vote. the proposed public bathroom in san francisco's know a valley is now estimated to cost $300,000. project leaders released what the bathroom with look like last year. that's when the estimate was

expecting another 6 to 12 inches of snow this weekend. so we do have some maybe some snow in the mountains on friday, the higher elevation, but travel looks good for the weekend. you'll be in the 30's and low 40's. so here's our long-range future cast this afternoon. you may run into a stray shower. i parts of the north bay and san francisco and the east bay, but not a washout and taking you through the evening. looks like we'll have some cloudy skies, but we'll start to see some clearing friday. looks like we'll have some passing clouds. we'll have some nice, crisp, cool. daytime highs in the 50's 60's. but notice around las vegas you-you. they run into some unsettled weather. if you plan to drive out there for the big game and this weekend. but saturday, we all clear on the west side here because arizona is getting all that unsettled weather right now. so from the mountains to the coast and nice hit day here in half moon bay, if you want to go walk around the beach, if you're stepping out the next few hours, expect a mix of some

sun and clouds in the 50's. back to you, stephanie. all right, thank you for that. >> and turning to national news now, 5 marines aboard a military helicopter that went down outside of san diego are confirmed dead. the military says the aircraft went down tuesday night during stormy weather. the group was returning from training at the creech air force base just northwest of las vegas. the helicopter was found yesterday morning near pine valley. one hour from san diego. efforts to recover remains are underway. border patrol agents encountered tens of thousands of people crossing into the u.s. on a monthly basis. a memo exclusively obtained by news nation reveals most are not arriving strictly for asylum, but for economic reasons. news nation's ali bradley has the details from the southern border. >> news nation was able to exclusively obtained internal documents from cbp sources that show that customs and border protection advisors we're down with panamanian it. immigration officials in the

darien gap where they know that those migrants traveling through that area actually don't qualify for asylum if they allow them to make that dangerous trek to our southern border anyway. so how do they know this? well, they interviewed hundreds of migrants here in this report in the darien gap. that's a notorious stretch, a little treacherous jungle region that connects south and central america. now investigators, they found no reports of migrants leaving their home countries because of political persecution or pressure from gangs or other criminal organizations. now, this is pretty significant because the current senate border bill labels, all migrants as asylum seekers, despite knowing most migrants are fleeing poor economic conditions. in fact, many of those interviewed say they already have employment set up for them at their destinations. so here's a breakdown of the migrants who were interviewed in the darien gap. most of them, as you can see, our venezuelan some of those venezuelan nationals were living in peru, ecuador and colombia. some of them for years before even heading north. also leaving those
