get stolen from palo alto and then lands on a beach in half moon bay. good evening. thank you for joining us on kron. 4 news at 11. i'm noelle bellow, a man from florida in custody tonight accused of stealing that aircraft and then landing it just south of poplar beech kron. 4 sarah stinson has the details. >> the san mateo county sheriff's office says luis, gustavo eris stole a plane from the palo alto airport and landed nose down in the sand just south of here and half moon bay. several people were enjoying the sunset at poplar beech and saw the plane go down. fully. no one was hurt. on thursday night around 5, the san mateo county sheriff's office got a call. they don't get every day a stolen plane landed just south of poplar peach and half moon bay. i've been doing 20 years. and this is a first for me. sergeant javier acosta says when deputies arrived, they found a single engine plane nose down in the sand. deputies quickly

learned the plane was stolen from the palo alto airport. acosta says several people witnessed the landing. someone saw the person walking away from their plane. >> provide us a detailed description and we found that person within minutes. a 50 year-old man from miami-dade county, florida was arrested on the beach shortly after sergeant acosta says investigators are still working to learn more about him at this time. i do not know if this person is a pilot or or who person >> managed to still airplane and landed on the have and the beach and walk away from. >> harris has been booked into the san mateo county jail. the lead investigator being palo alto police. but this did happen on a state-run beach popular beach, though. they're still trying to figure out how to recover the plane and get it off the beach and back to where it belongs. >> i'm sara stinson reporting in half moon bay kron. 4 news. >> muni buses were temporarily delayed today after a bus got

stuck on a curb in daly city. it happened this afternoon in the area of mission and flournoy streets. it caused a bit of a mess there. we've reached out to police for more details as of this report. we have not yet heard back. union city police are asking for your help to find this girl. take a look at your screen. they say 12 year-old mia bella gomez was last seen around 4 this afternoon. cesar chavez, middle school, mia bella weighs 140 pounds. she has brown hair with blond highlights and brown eyes. anyone with information on her whereabouts is asked to contact police. a 55 year-old tampa tale man is in custody tonight. accused of robbing one bank yesterday and trying rob another one the day before. san mateo police say the first incident happened on tuesday afternoon. police say he went into a bank on south camino real and passed a note to the teller demanding money but after a short interaction, the suspect left the bank the next day they allegedly robbed

a bank in the same area. police were able to arrest him today. governor newsom has announced plans to deploy state attorneys to oakland and across the east bay to boost criminal prosecutions. this comes 2 days after he announced plans to send 120 additional california highway patrol officers to that area as part of a law enforcement search operation. today's announcement is part of it. new partnership between the alameda county district attorney's office and california law enforcement agencies. it's called keeping california safe. this partnership will focus on helping county prosecutors go after suspects involved in violent crimes. serious drug-related crimes and property crimes, including retail theft and auto burglary. a great >> demonstration of collaborative leadership where no one is trying to go at it alone. we all know that we need each other to help. and to deliver the outcomes that are necessary and in that spirit of cooperation and collaboration and partnership.

we're working together and i believe we're going to be successful. >> da pamela price said, quote, i welcome the support from the governor in this fight against organized retail crime at the scourge of fentanyl and our community. according to preliminary reports from the governor's office and 2023 violent crime in oakland did increase by 21% robbery increased by 38% and car thefts rose by 45%. there's no official timeline for when the prosecutors will show up. but newsom says this partnership is set to become operational in the coming days. the berkeley unified school district is warning about scam calls targeting parents. the district says yesterday one parent got a call. their child had been kidnapped and to the parent needed to pay up. in this case, the parents said the caller spoke in spanish and they could hear a child crying in the background. but the parents child was actually safe in class. if you get a scam call like this, the district advise you to stay calm. don't give out any of

your personal information. hang up as soon as you can and try to contact your child to make sure they're safe. of woman accused of stealing a chp patrol vehicle was in a san francisco courtroom today facing felony charges in another case for driving another stolen car. prosecutors say the vehicles been linked to a vallejo home invasion happened earlier this month. police have not made any arrests in the case, but surveillance footage from the neighboring properties show people checking for unlocked doors and unlocked vehicles. hours after that home invasion. prosecutors say san francisco police a 27 year-old vanessa good exiting a vehicle stolen and that home invasion. hey, she pleaded not guilty to receiving stolen property and unlawfully driving or taking a vehicle. >> i'm scared, you know, for my safety at times because i do have a one year-old daughter, but i have taken precautions in getting security for our house. >> bail for her set at $15,000

due to the allegations in vallejo, though, the judge says if she posts bail, she's going to be put on electronic monitoring and home detention. she is due back in court for a preliminary hearing later this month at the san francisco hall of justice. take a live look now at the golden gate bridge tonight. it is a cold night out there. kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here. he's got details on just how cold. yeah, you know, you don't see out there is any rain around the bay area have been able to say that for a while. boy, we've been through a lot of stormy weather recently. >> and were finally going to catch a break outside. right now, those skies clearing out. it is getting cold as normal said, these temperatures really falling off around the bay area. we did have a few scattered showers popping up across the bay area today. but those are widely scattered. now things are beginning to weakened quite a bit. in fact, we're looking good out there right now. the skies begin to part, but that cold alaskan air kind of settling in for the night. that means we're in for some chilly temperatures outside. in fact, how these

numbers right now we're down to 40 degrees in napa. 41 in santa rosa. it's 40 right now in livermore, a lower 40's, even inside the bay. so some cold temperatures to be had, in fact, frost advisories are going up are likely to see these temperatures hovering right around freezing. i think in parts of the north bay police mid 30's in parts of the east bay and even cold enough, we may see some patchy frost and parts of the santa clara valley. so overnight lows are expected about 33 degrees just hovering above freezing in santa rosa. 35 in napa about 36 degrees. and more, even 37, maybe some patchy frost and free month tomorrow morning. thanks, lawrence. >> in the spirit of the super bowl, they area food banks are tackling hunger through a friendly competition with kansas city food banks. the 2 sides are hoping to rally fans of the forty-niners and chiefs to donate and help their neighbors in need. kron four's. dan thorn joining us in studio now with more on the food bank battle high yeah, all this effort is actually called the huddle to end hunger. >> it's a competition between 3 bay area food banks,

>> meantime, district attorneys for san francisco in kansas city. they're also competing da. brooke jenkins has agreed to wear a patrick mahomes chiefs jersey. if they win on sunday. but the niners win the jackson county district attorney jean peters baker will wear a property jersey. the loser will then post a picture wearing the jersey on social media. san francisco police are advising people who may be traveling in the city on super bowl sunday to expect some road closures in the mission. there's also going to be changes to muni bus service. the chp will be closing the cesar chavez and mission off-ramps like they did 2 weeks ago for the nfc championship game. so just be aware of that. if you're wanting to gather with some other fans thrive city and san francisco is hosting the official watch party for the big game. this sunday's free event is first come first serve. fans are encouraged to rsvp to the event online. coming up on kron for news at 11, what these kids in the east bay are being taught.

pacific islander community. there've been a number of high-profile instances of violence against that community in recent years. and too often, seniors are the victim. city leaders are now calling for a community-based approach to the problem that would expand city services, support victims and make sure resources are available. to think about the future in a way that is more about our community that is healthy. that sustainable. that is well rounded. there are strategies that compliment. >> law enforcement that make our communities safer i wasn't in. >> following the rally, the board of supervisors held a public safety hearing to hear from the police department and other city departments what they're doing to prevent violence against the api community. 2 east bay rape and murder cold cases from the 1970's have been solved. the crimes were committed in newark and hayward. they

involved 48 year-old hayward resident theresa pico and 60 year-old newark resident nelly hicks. those cases remain cold until late last year when the fbi helped to connect the crimes to the alleged killer using dna. the evidence lead fred bernard farnham, man responsible for both crimes. >> farnham who was from oregon died in a hospital in 2007 at the age of 73. and criminal records show. he was a convicted of a series of assaults in the bay area. >> investigators believe may be connected to more rapes and murders and nevada. north dakota, idaho, oregon and alaska. only on kron 4 working to close the wealth gap. one student at a time. that's the goal of financial literacy for kids. a program being todd at franklin elementary school oakland. as i found out, kids are using what they learned to create their own businesses and even help out their parents. >> this about $4. i saved $26.

a credit card is type where you borrow card much. it's credit cards and savings accounts, not your average conversation. with a 10 year-old be able invest in bonds and stocks. but at franklin elementary in oakland, that's exactly what these 5th graders are discussing. their warning about investing and saving and budgeting and avoiding, you know, bad valerie chapman is a former banker who transitioned education several years ago. she blunder 2 passions to create financial literacy for kids. children of color traditionally left behind in terms of disrupt so that kids, kids here oakland have an opportunity financial lessons range from basic money management and identifying needs versus wants all the way

to learning about the stock market. what you should call the biggest this might not be the new york stock exchange. but these students are learning how to invest wisely and they're teaching me a thing or 2 in the process. winners means companies like netflix, they're the national stock market game challenges. the students to invest $100,000. a virtual money. more than 600,000 students compete annually and the 4th and 5th graders at franklin are for time consecutive champions of the game. i like that. have control of some like i continue to do the money. even if it's the light bulbs were going off in terms of >> them wanting to understand how the world around them works when it comes to stocks. 10 runs is the co-founder of next gen personal finance. his organization has helped provide books and other resources to the program at franklin. he wants every student in california to receive this same california.

>> is used to being a leader and things unfortunate when it comes to financial education, they're at the bottom of the pack. his group, californians for financial education is working on a ballot initiative to guarantee every student gets a personal finance couuse before graduating high school. just remarkable how much students want this material. it's not just the students benefiting either. i mean, i have parents who love school asking me, can we join the chapman believes equipping the kids with money management skills early will set them on the path to financial success in the future, helping them to set both long term. what do you saving college and short-term goals in the party takes 6 when it comes out. thing i really want to worry about is buying my own fault because if i get in trouble is my parents can take away my focus about the funding pay the bill on that phone. so feeling confident about money and focused on financial success. >> he's got it all figured out

inland. and then tomorrow, i think really a nice day. it will be the first to all dry day. i think, though, quite a while now. and then that's going to be a trend that takes us into the weekend. and i think in the next week, too, out the door right now, though it is getting cold in spots. we're down to 40 now and live more. 41 in concord. 47 in san francisco. 38 in fairfax start to break out the 30's in the north the way down to 34 right now in calistoga. so we've got some cold temperatures settling in for the night. we did have some scattered showers popping up around the bay area this afternoon. mostly just some widely scattered showers. you see that moving down the peninsula, parts of the state. but now things have settled down. and so we're going to your skies. parting. that means a high-pressure get ready to take over that ridge builds in. that is going to send the jetstream to the north and the storm track that way as well. we'll keep you nice and dry think for tomorrow. but a little bit on the cool side, long-range forecast. well, we've got nice weekend ahead. tomorrow looks good as we get into saturday, even better more sunshine around the bay area. maybe a couple clouds moving in on sunday, but still staying dry.
