>> now at 5, a wet presidents day weekend causing a headache for drivers headed home from the long weekend. heavy rain causing major flooding and crumbling roads. good evening. thanks for joining us here in companies at 5. i'm noelle bellow and i'm grant lotus. thanks for being with us. a flood watch is in effect for the bay area until wednesday. >> wind advisory will be with us until tomorrow and the wind and saturated ground are making for scenes like this one in los gatos, a big old oak tree gave out on almaden road and cherry blossom lane. the tree leaning on power lines blocking the right lane. a reminder, too. stay away from powerlines in to call 3, 1, 1, if you see hazards out and about, that's a big tree. meantime, this large tree is blocked pinehurst road in contra costa county. all traffic between. >> canyon road and skyline boulevard currently closed crews work to clear the road.

no word on when that's going to reopen. kron four's chief meteorologist lawrence karnow is here now is going to give us an idea of how these storms are going to play out over the next couple of there's a potential for a tornado, lawrence. i feel like we have like little mini breaks and then it really comes and gets yeah. now we're really in the instability part of the storm, right? the main cold front is already gone through. that was the more steady rain. but now. >> we're going to see more of those scattered those pop-up showers only get back in the sunshine and some rainbows. and then a few minutes later, it is back into some very heavy rain and gusty winds and maybe some thunderstorms, too. so we're kind of in the wild weather section of event. and of course, it's been very wild all weekend long just a ton of rain. so the camera shaking around in the wind outside looking back toward the golden gate bridge. we've had some strong gusty winds, 40, even some 60 mile an hour gust, the entire bay area right now under a flood watch. we could easily see many of the creeks and streams rise rapidly. now we're seeing that in parts of the north bay. in fact, some

of those areas currently under a flood advisory as we've seen some of those are rapid rises along some of those mark west creek. there in the north also green valley creek and colgan creek near sebastopol. they're also reaching the flood stage area, some moderate amounts of flooding in those locations. so this advisory continuing until 10 o'clock tonight. so here we go. we've got that area of low pressure kind of anchor off northern california. see it spinning around there. and we talk about instability. look at all the thunderstorms popping up in the central valley. that's where you can really see tornado, possibly a funnel cloud there. some rain statements have been issued for some strong thunderstorms moving in along our coastline right now. so we're watching those very, very closely. but you can see the areas now you're kind of getting a break in parts of the north bay, but then you head toward parts of the central and south bay. here you go. you've got some stronger storms now just moving on shore. this is going to continue throughout the night tonight. another band of heavier rainfall likely on the way for tomorrow. we will time that out coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, thank you.

>> as of 5 o'clock, a major artery connecting drivers between seminole and fremont is now shut down a portion of niles canyon road washed out under the weight of heavy rain part of the road now lying at the edge of a creek kron. 4 ella sogomonian has the latest. >> the rain makes for beautiful rolling green hills drive between signal in fremont, but it's also pummeled highway 84, so much so that a part of niles canyon road cracked apart and now lies at the bank of alameda creek. >> on monday afternoon, the water below russia's more like a river. caltrans crews making the call to shut down nose canyon road for the night until they can return tuesday morning to reassess up until 5 o'clock drivers were still able to get through one-way traffic control. >> can you do it right? this something out. >> chp says a long-term plan is still being worked out. drivers will have to reroute using highway 6 ad for the time being people who rely on this stretch of niles canyon

road said it will double their commute time until it's fixed. >> like the only way i the other ways, the south 6 5 e so it's pretty much going to double my commute time. pretty much so. >> excited for that reporting. insta. no one else to come only kron. 4 news. >> the storm impacts are also being felt across lake and napa counties. this tree and various branches on highway. 29 at tucker road temporarily blocked southbound traffic, but officials were able to quickly clear that roadway in windsor public works. crews had to shut down some streets like this one overnight. the water >> was so high. drivers at 3rd turned around or they gambled their cars would make it through those standing water without their engines. shutting off a reminder. if you see standing water like that, best advice is to turn around. >> and heavy rain made its way to santa cruz cc the ocean. there. >> high surf as well. strong winds, thunderstorms according

to the national weather service, 3 to 6 inches of rain is expected to fall in the mountains. there during the several days. the weather appears to be causing some flight delays in the bay area as well. a live look here at sfo where according to flightaware, there are more than 450 flights delayed as of last check today, 15 flights were canceled according to the faa inbound flights sfo have been delayed. an average of 2 hours. and 37 minutes, although some of that is due to runway repair work. you see the numbers on your screen there for the other local airports as well. >> the state is getting a little extra help in response to the storm. governor gavin newsom has activated the state of operations center bringing state support to the counties that need it to. this includes pre positioning sandbags in some trouble spots and extending emergency response service hours to actively monitor flood dangers. the

governor also has directed cal oes to preposition swift water. rescue crews and equipment in multiple counties to be able to respond if needed. you can stay up to date with the storm online. keep up with current conditions. any road closures on kron 4 dot com. just scan that qr code that you see there on your screen. >> a big pro-palestine demonstration in san francisco today shut down the central freeway entrance at octavia on this presidents day. protesters demanding an immediate cease-fire and an end to u.s. support the ongoing bombing from israel in gaza. the protesters claim president biden has facilitated the mass murder of palestinians while providing billions of dollars of weapons to israel. and gaza's health ministry says more than 29,000 palestinians have now been

killed in the territory since the start of the israel-hamas war. the ministry says most of the people killed are women and children. the war began when hamas led militants stormed into southern israel from gaza, october, 7th, killing at least 1200 israelis and taking about 250 people hostage. >> back here at home, the valencia corridor merchants association is continuing its push to get rid of the center bike lane on the street. the association sending an open letter to the sfmta board today asking for the bike lane to be moved back to the side of the street. they also want parking spaces to be added back for customers. the association is claiming the bike lane is negatively affecting their businesses. a preliminary sfmta report does show 26% fewer vehicles on valencia since the project began, the agency's expected to release more of its findings from that report

during a meeting tomorrow. >> well, it seems every other day, another tech from announces a series of layoffs. it's been going on for more than a year, feeling notions of doom and gloom. but a prominent bay area ceo says in fact, a i is fueling a boom in analysts agree. kron four's dan kerman reports. just since the beginning of the year. layoffs have been announced. its cisco, paypal, ebay, google. >> and sales force indicating last year shutting of hundreds of thousands of tech jobs isn't yet over. and yet on monday, sales for ceo marc benioff took to social media saying san francisco is once again experiencing a tech revival entrepreneurs and investors are flocking back to the city which is undergoing a boom in artificial intelligence. what many off said is absolutely true. >> what we're seeing now is incredible demand for new engineering talent and jobs,

especially with engineering and programmers who understand how to work with in artificial intelligence tech analyst and the hair. and he's been covering the industry for 45 years. he says the layoffs we've seen our result of inflationary concerns and over hiring to meet demand during covid. and while he says layoffs may continue through the middle of this year, the bay area's tech future looks bright. we're going to see a completely new level of energy. >> especially focused into not only artificial intelligence that, you know, just introduced a new product called the vision pro. that is showing us potential of the future of computing, where you move from 2 d to virtual 3 d immersive technologies. parents as this boom and bust scenario as common as tech changes from one phase to another. >> pcs to social media, to smartphones. and now i but he

i know. i they view looks are deceiving bit with us now. rob, you've been on the crb today have figuring out how skiers are doing, how the roads are. what's going take it slow? it's good advice, right? of course the snow is not good for the roads. the man obviously skiers snowboarders. they're happy about that. fresh snow is good for skiing. >> but many of those outdoor enthusiasts had to get back home today after the holiday weekend. not easy. when you look at roads like i-80 near kingville where traffic trying to get back to the bay area. look like this most of the afternoon snow clearing happened all over the lake tahoe region monday after several inches of snow fell overnight. resorts were packed with skiers and snowboarders. ready to take advantage of the fresh powder. i haven't seen that disney had having the before. caleb williams and visited south lake tahoe from southern california for the holiday weekend. >> paying close attention to the weather forecast. travel. it's going to be difficult to impossible. a winter storm warning calling for heavy snow until wednesday morning up to 2 feet expected in some parts

and what influence williamson to leave tahoe when chain controls were lifted. monday, i was trying to time it abuse or i got away from all of the heavy snow and the heavy traffic before it got really bad by 02:00pm monday chain controls were backup on interstate 80 in traffic was clearly impacted. director of communications for the california mountain resorts group coop expects more chain controls during the next 48 hours. they'll be on and off. and the elevations where those chain controls going to will be changing as well. he says this type of snow creates very slick road conditions and offered some advice for those who do have to be on the road either to or from the sierra road have your chains, water, extra food blankets. and if you're in the ev car, have a full charge before you come up to the sierra. >> hoops as the weather has not had too much of an impact on the ski resorts themselves. strong winds. >> cause some trail closures this weekend. and today as well as some avalanche mitigation, which happens

anytime there's more than 6 inches of snowfall reporting in studio. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. well, a lot of snow in the high country has been coming down was just checking on some of the totals. some of the resort's, some places there, a foot and a half of fresh powder. >> and a lot more to come. they've got a long way to go before the storm system winds down. so traveling in the high country, pretty dangerous. we've got strong. gusty winds ate likely to see some blowing snow. maybe some whiteout conditions. if you're traveling that way overnight tonight and tomorrow, really dangerous traveling at night time during these kind of conditions. a beautiful look over southlake. all you see some of the snow kind of building up down below the trees. they will snow up there as well. nice look up there if you're up there. but well, it's been rough and it will continue to be that way. you can see that snow piling up across the mountain tops around lake tahoe area. snow level running about 5 to 6,000 feet there. so they're going to continue to see a lot of that snow with on and off snow showers throughout the night tonight. very value. see the snow. there. you get to arnold. it turns into a little bit of rain. how about that? so little cooler lower levels in the sierra nevada, but you

get up there. but 5,006 1000 feet or so. and it's really coming down. so winter storm warnings are up now until 10 o'clock in the morning on wednesday as this storm system. boy, it just keeps spinning around just wave after wave of moisture. we're going to see more of that here. but by the time he's the high country, boy, they need that snow and they're getting plenty of it. there is an avalanche warning that's in effect further south. you go to watch out for that. anybody trying to some of the country areas. you've got to be very, very careful in these kind of conditions. latest forecast model for snow in the high country shows us still piling up more. maybe another couple of feet across some of the higher peaks. that's a lot of snow ending. by the time we add this all up are talking about 2, maybe 5 feet of snow across the higher peaks of the mountains there. and that is certainly nice to all right. the forecast, if you're headed up that way, it is a rough go tonight. change being required on 80 tomorrow. more snow showers continuing snow showers on wednesday morning. and then it may begin to taper off by thursday. that's the

day to go. it looks like some nice clear powder. if you're headed up in that direction. forecast model showing the snow up there right now behind that, another round of rain for the bay area. lot more snow in the high country as we head toward tomorrow afternoon, guys. so yeah, got to be careful up there. especially this time of year pack while you're sleeping bags of warm weather gear, lots of food because it looks like we're going to see more that wild weather in the high not only here. this is almost a statewide event again. and so we're getting much needed rain. we're just getting it seems like all once we get the storms moving in, right? they come and they dump a lot and they don't. they haven't given us that much of a break in between. that's right. yeah. i do see a break, though, coming our way. so we'll talk more about that forecast in a few minutes here. thanks. aren't. >> the uc berkeley student who was found dead on campus last week has been identified. the 19 year-old marco troper is the son of a former youtube executive. susan will just ski. the university confirming the berkeley freshman was found unresponsive at his dorm on tuesday afternoon. first

responders tried saving his life but he died in a facebook post roper's grandmother. so the family is, quote, devastated beyond comprehension over the death. troper was an undeclared major in the college of letters and science. his cause of death is still under investigation. but police say there are no signs a foul play. >> 2 months after vandals destroyed a menorah at lake merritt in oakland. now more problems as kron four's philippe djegal reports over this past weekend. anti semitic and pro-hamos messages were spray painted on structures at the lake. >> walking along the columns on the eastern part of lake merritt in oakland cancel he pass us by messages spray painted at the park over the weekend. some stating free palestine and others calling for an end of u.s. aid to israel. >> still hate him and says vandalism is not a positive way to get a point across a very complicated situation.

jewish people have also suffered oakland based rabbi mark bloom believes the vandalism happened sometime on friday or saturday report has been filed with police. this as the agency continues to investigate the destruction of a menorah at lake merritt back in december. it's terrible. >> and has no place. bloom says he texted mayor sheng thao about the vandalism. but as of monday afternoon, he did not hear back. neither did we when we reached out to the city of oakland and its public works department for an estimate on when the graffiti will be cleaned up and action possibly delayed by the holiday weekend. jewish community relations council bay-area ceo tyler gregory is currently with a delegation of state legislators visiting israel. he says he was disheartened to learn about the graffiti overseas. this kind of graffiti and makes jews in the bay area feel like we don't belong.

>> that we are not welcome here. and it's the same type xenophobia that we've seen deployed against other communities like asian americans. in recent years. the jcrc says more than 3 of every 5 bay area, jews feel less safe in their day-to-day lives since the hamas terrorist attacks on israel in october. >> you know, going fully digital kron. 4 >> our city is in need of and those that came to after this call, god is going to do something going forward. he meant. >> everyone who lives in the city. there's a joint prayer service this morning in the east bay members of the oakland chapter of the naacp and pastors gathered at acts full gospel church in east oakland today asking for higher power to turn their city into a safer place, especially for families. the event was held in response to rising crime rates and many businesses closing pastors prayed for the city's mayor. police and parents raising
