>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> and now it's 6. we are tracking a wet commute for many people as they make their way back from the president's day weekend destinations, rain showers all across the bay making roads pretty slick out there for travelers. all that rain causing some major damage to some bay area roads. some of them are now closed indefinitely with work crews trying to patch them up. >> ahead of even more showers to come. good evening. thanks for joining us for kron. 4 news at 6. i'm ken wayne and i'm vicki liviakis alongside our chief meteorologist says the man of the hour. wow, this storm did materialize so much going on. those gusty winds, the heavy rain, of course, trees coming down. now the worry about flooding and that's going to be issues we head through the night tonight. more heavy rain expected as we head throughout the night tonight and tomorrow, likely going to be

another round of these showers just continuing. you get underneath one of these thunderstorms. you can see a lot of rain in a short amount of time looking out toward half moon bay. we've had some big waves a moving in along the coastline. dangerous surf out there. >> and we're up with some flash flood watches are flood watches continuing across the entire bay area. in fact, one area now we're looking at flood warnings and they have reported some flooding there near some basketball. great. you've got to be careful in those areas. if you're driving around, be careful. some of the being reported flooded by highway patrol watching that continuing overnight tonight, some in the north bay over 4, 5 inches of rain already. flood advisories up for the entire north bay as well as we're going to see more of that rain drain down. many of the tributaries and streams in the creeks and rivers and possibly lead us more flooding issues. we have the storm rolling on through and you can see the main area of low pressure just kind of anchor off the coastline has been sitting there since yesterday. and so just spinning up these rounds of showers and thunderstorms on and off throughout the day today. some

of those really heavy downpours you get underneath one of these thunderstorms. you can see some very strong gusty winds. we have a lot of strong gusts 40 to 60 miles an hour around the bay area today. more widely scattered around the bay area right now. you see some lightning strikes up in the north bay right now, northern sonoma county, east bay. you're picking up some heavier amounts of rainfall just north of livermore now headed toward brentwood, discovery bay in antioch, some heavy rainfall making its way in that direction. some of the cells there as much as 2 inches per hour. so that's a lot of rain in a short amount of time. when will come to an end? we'll talk about that coming up in a few minutes. all right, lawrence, to take a look at this. niles canyon road. >> shut down for the night after heavy rain just washed out a large portion of the road there. as you can see, the road shut down for about an hour about an hour ago so that crews could come back in the morning to work on it. our four's ella sogomonian. we'll have more on this story ahead at 6.30, win plus saturated ground that equates to scenes like this one all over the bay area in the south bay lost cattle city council member.

>> robin, more posted these pictures on x. so in that huge fallen trees, some much or oh, it's a mature oak tree on loss, cows, alamuddin road and cherry blossom. lane in the picture, you can see the tree leaning on some power lines there, blocking the right lane. in the east bay. this big tree fell on pinehurst road in contra costa county causing authorities to close the road between canyon road and skyline boulevard. crews are working to clear that road. no word on when it will reopen. and here's a look at how bay area airports are fairing in all of this wet weather at sfo. 468 flight delays. that's about a 3rd of all the flights. 15 flight cancellations at oakland airport. 72 delays. 3 cancellations. and in san jose. 65 flight delays. but no cancellations. stay up to date with the storm online. you can keep up with current conditions and the road closures by going to kron 4 dot com or you can scan that qr code that you see there on

your screen. asked pro-palestinian demonstration in san francisco shutting down the several freeway entrance. octavia, this president's day, protesters demanding an immediate cease-fire and and add end to us support of the ongoing bombing from israel on gaza. the protesters claim that the president biden has facilitated the mass murder of palestinians. well, providing billions of dollars of weapons to israel. a man is dead and 2 women injured after a shooting in east san jose. one of those women is in critical condition tonight. this happened about 9 o'clock last night on story road near the mount pleasant pig center. police say a group of people were around the area when the shooting took place. officers say the second woman was taken to the hospital, but she is expected to survive. no word tonight on a suspect or a motive in the

shooting. this is san jose's 7th homicide so far this year. well, it looks as though a driverless taxi company waymo what be expanding its service into the south bay least any time soon. the california public utilities commission wants time for what it calls further review kron four's. catherine heenan live for us in our newsroom with the latest. catherine, yet waymo does operate in san francisco. as you know, that is not going to change. but the request to expand service south a sunnyvale parts of los angeles that has been shelved for now. >> and we are reeling against the autonomous vehicles. >> the same day a small group of protesters demanded that california self-driving taxis completely. a move was made by the cpu see representing a less drastic setback for waymo. but still and significant delay. state regulators have quietly suspended the company's expansion request until at

least june 19th. that's 4 months. it is a proposal. the dmv did approve but waymo can't move forward without the okay from the california public utilities commission. all of this was not unexpected. analysts say that after some safety incidents, waymo still has work to do on gaining public trust. the issue here is how can i overcome this kind fear? >> and this kind of speculation, you know, and this kind of suspicion say we need to get more information. we have to show us more test. you notice of us will going to the passengers from that, you know, from san francisco all the way senate that's a huge area. >> here's the area where waymo wants to go down the peninsula as far south as sunnyvale and into parts of los angeles. that has some critics arguing it is too soon to have driverless taxis moving up and down the highway. professor banafa says county and state officials in the meantime are asking the right questions.

>> we doing this too fast is this is something that we should slow down for months. the pause that to to answer the questions to get some more information to do some analysis. and then in june, to get meet again and then we'll see. >> waymo says its data shows that it's injury. crash rate is almost 7 times lower than with human driving. meantime, state senator dave cortese has a bill pending. it would give local governments a lot more say in all of not just a couple of state agencies. he told me tonight he is happy with the delay. he hopes the cpu see will continue to wait and watch. vicki, thank you, catherine. at the valencia quarter merchants association in the city, it's continuing its push to get rid of the center bike lane on the street. the association's sending an open letter to the sfmta board today asking for that bike lane to be moved back to the side of the street

as well as adding back more parking spaces for customers. the association the bike lane is negatively affecting businesses on valencia street. a preliminary report does show 26% fewer vehicles on valencia since the project began, the agency is expected to release more of the findings from that report during a meeting tomorrow. >> at times, it may seem like every other day there's another tech from announcing a series of layoffs. it's been going on for more than a year. and that's been julie notions of doom and gloom. but a prominent bay area ceo says in fact, a i >> is fueling a boom. and analysts agree. kron dan kerman reports. some of the bay area's biggest tech companies started off the year laying off employees continuing a trend. >> that's a hundreds of thousands of workers lose their jobs last year. it's this doom and gloom. word of a boom from bay area. tech ceo marc benioff. the sales force leader took to social media monday saying san francisco is

once again experiencing a tech revival entrepreneurs and investors are flocking back to the city which is undergoing a boom in artificial intelligence tech analysts agree probably had more hiring. >> in the next 5 years that we've had in the past i actually touches everything. tech analyst tim the hair and he's been covering the industry for 45 years. he says the layoffs we've seen are result of inflationary concerns and over hiring to meet demand during covid. and while he says layoffs may continue through the middle of the year, the bay area's tech future looks bright. not just today. i alone, but also to help companies moved from 2 d to a virtual 3 d immersive environment enterprises around the world are going to be forced to deal with the artificial intelligence needs as well some of them looking at how they're going to use things like the rna are in training in fields, service and sales in the future.

the bay area half a foot of snow in parts of the sierra. that's how much palisades tahoe received overnight. half a foot there with more expected. and there's a winter weather warning up there. and this year we're up to 2 feet of snow is expected to fall from now until wednesday conference. rob nesbitt has been talking to some skiers trying to get home after the holiday weekend. he's here in the studio with what the road conditions are looking like. rob ken and vicki. fresh snow is good for skiing and snowboarding, but many of those outdoor enthusiasts had to get back home today after the holiday weekend. it was not easy by mid afternoon with more snow and chain controls. >> snow clearing happened all over the lake tahoe region monday after several inches of snow fell overnight. resorts were packed with skiers and snowboarders. ready to take advantage of the fresh powder. i haven't seen that disney had having the before. caleb williams and visited south lake tahoe from southern california for the holiday

weekend. paying close attention to the weather forecast. travel. it's going to be difficult to impossible. a winter storm warning calling for heavy snow until wednesday morning up to 2 feet expected in some parts and what influence williamson to leave tahoe when chain controls were lifted. monday, i was trying to time it to street. i got away from all of the heavy snow and the heavy traffic before it got really bad by 02:00pm monday chain controls were backup on interstate 80 in traffic was clearly impacted. director of communications for the california mountain resorts group coop expects more chain controls during the next 48 hours. they'll be on and off. and the elevations where those chain controls going to will be changing as well. not good news for travelers need to get back home. cook recommending anyone who does make the choice to travel have a road kit handy chains. plenty of extra food, water and blankets as well as a full charge on electric vehicles. this kind of it's very slick and this guest. so where you think you might be down on you know, the pavement or the asphalt on the

highways, you're actually not. you're on this micro thin layer. so you see a caltrans plow chp or you see traffic slow your roll. >> cook says the weather hasn't had too much of an impact on the ski resorts themselves. strong winds. >> cause some trail closures this weekend and today as well as some avalanche mitigation, which happens anytime there's more than 6 inches of snowfall reporting in studio. i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. thank you for that. and here we go. let's take a live look outside and see how things look. well, the connection is down. maybe the weather has something. yeah, you know, words to the wise from our buddy coop. slow your roll. slow your roll. you got even around the bay area, right? went out there on the roads. you got to just slowdown. saw some people hydroplaning out there today. but >> we're looking at some more heavy snow in the sierra nevada. and just like we've been seen wave after wave of rain there seen wave after wave snow showers rolling on through some of the very heavy. >> and you throw some gusty winds near whiteout conditions. just a rough

travel. if you're planning to head up there tonight, i just wouldn't do it. this one of those nights could be very scary to be stuck out on the roads live. look out toward right now. you see some of the snow piling up on the trees up there as well. and there you go very active out there right now. some lightning strikes on the western slopes here. you got that snow in around lake tahoe and level running about 5, 6,000 feet or so. so you got to be able to get over the sierra without having to worry about some of that snow bear valley. you see something coming down there. turning to rain, though, at the lower levels in the arnold well, that looks like we're going to see more of that significant snow. so we've got winter storm warnings up all the way until wednesday morning. that's when we expect things to finally begin to settle down. you see the areas shaded in blue. that's an avalanche warning in the mammoth area, especially in the back country. they got to be very careful skiing any of runs there in that area as you can likely cause or possibly cause avalanche in those spots. more snow going to be piling up in the high country. you can see here, in fact, maybe foot and a half, maybe 2 feet of snow across some of the higher

peaks. so we've got a long way to go more. that snow on the way. in the series of storms going to be rolling on in. we're going to see more of the snow showers continuing on tuesday and wednesday. but here's the good news. if you want to sneak up on thursday, wrote we should be open in clearing the sunshine should return with plenty of powder to ski on. that sounds great. thank you, lawrence. 2 months ago, vandals destroyed menorah at lake merritt in oakland. >> kron four's philippe djegal tells us anti-semitic and pro-hamas messages have since been spray painted on structures. there. >> free palestine, free gaza and u.s. aid to israel. every hour adds up as it is a shame. but we have confidence that they'll take care of it sometime over the weekend from hamas and anti-semitic rhetoric was spray painted various spots along the eastern end of lake merritt in oakland, jewish community relations council bay-area ceo tyler gregory is currently with a delegation of state legislators visiting israel and learned about the

high surf, strong winds and thunderstorms to santa cruz. look at those waves. national weather service says santa cruz santa cruz mountains expected to see 3 to 6 inches of rain. and in southern california, heavy rain triggered flooding in ventura and santa barbara counties. torrents of fast-moving flood water wind its way through the canyons. they're turning country roads into dangerous rivers. well, aren't. yeah, this is a mess. said one of the state to the other. really it is a statewide event. some of the mountains there around santa barbara, almost 11 inches of rain again. remember, they just did that a couple of weeks ago. so. >> tremendous amounts of water coming down all yet to drain all the way down all the rivers and streams and tributary. some flooding going to be an issue there as we head in toward the next couple of days. you can see the storm more scattered showers, but all the way from northern california into southern california. that rain continuing to fall. and they've got some watches and advisories up for some flooding of the areas shaded in green. those are the

watches shaded in yellow underneath that. that's all advisories expecting. some are more mudslides overnight tonight, the possibilities, more flooding out there on the roads across the greater los angeles area. as we're seeing that heavy downpours continuing and thunderstorms rolling through that area as well. the flood watches have been extended for them until wednesday at 10 in the morning. just give, you know, idea of how long the storm system has just been sitting around plans to stick around to the bay area. numerous lightning strikes showing up around the bay area, too. and now we're seeing more scattered showers popping up of some of the cells that are moving through. these could easily be some thunderstorms. one just off the coastline right now making its way towards san francisco. one, the east bay getting these some of these downpours and their dangers. you can see a whole lot of rain in a short amount of time that cause ponding out there on the roadways, saw some people actually hydroplaning out there today due to all that heavy rain. so overnight tonight, the winds will continue as well. and they've been blowing awesome us to 40, even 60 mile an hour gusts out there throughout the day today. maybe not quite as strong but these storms that come through as we head
