>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> good evening. welcome to kron. 4 news at 6. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne tonight. a major development in an early morning. deadly shooting in santa clara. we're learning a 3 year-old boy was killed and his mother's boyfriend. he's a suspect. the shooting happened about 2.30, this morning at an apartment complex on points on that drive off the lawrence expressway. police say the little boy's mother called them saying that her live in boyfriend shot her son. the little boy died at the scene.

the suspect has been identified as 25 year-old sergio gomez who got into a brief struggle with officers before he was arrested, according to police, he was sent to the hospital with minor injuries. but is expected to be booked into the county jail. police say the little boy was not related to the suspect. our reporter, sara stinson, we'll have more on the story coming up later on on kron. 4 news at 10. >> yeah. did you hear it fund or and lightning heard and seen in san francisco today as heavy rain showers make their way through the bay area. >> yeah, a heavy downpour says too much for the city's storm drains. at least some of them. this is at franklin and green in the cow hollow neighborhood in san francisco. you can see the water coming up out of the

drains in funding the intersection, their car still driving through that deep water in the intersection and around the storm drains, which, of course, is not encouraged by authorities. you can stall out. here's a live look outside of the road conditions around the bay area. you can see it's dry it out substantially. >> traffic light heading to the bay bridge on the richmond. sandra fell bridge and the golden gate a little bit heavier on the san mateo bridge at this hour. we sure could use to break. and here's a look at traffic conditions right now near the san francisco bay. >> bridge also, you see a lot of green there. that's a good sign when it comes to traffic. chief meteorologist lawrence karnow here with the details are as manic came down car. yeah, i really did. especially the afternoon that system rolling on through and it was dumping. >> all around the bay area making a dangerous out on the roadways. a re briefly have flash flood warnings even in downtown san francisco. even see that happen very often. but here we are right now. the clouds begin to park just a little bit. we're getting a

little break in the rain. we're not done entirely. we've still got a little more shower activity to go. but you can see the numerous showers and thunderstorms rolling in this really all part of the same storm system that moved in on sunday. you see that area of low pressure that's been anchored off the coastline that is bringing more the rain in the bay area. and that's the way it's been over the last few days. you can see that strong storm system moving in yellow, orange, even some red passing by with a lightning strike. so get those thunderstorms coming through. they can dump a whole lot of rain in a short amount of time. in fact, it was over an inch and a 3rd of rain in san francisco alone. they have the most in the bay area. we're not done with the rain just yet. there are few more scattered showers out there. some of that begin to move into parts of the north bay. right now, we'll still see some downpours and there's the threat possible more flooding outside to flood watches continue across the entire bay area until 10 o'clock tomorrow morning. that's just going to have so much rain. the ground is so saturated. we could see rapid rises and in the of the creeks and streams around the bay area. if we get any more

rain, we are looking at some flooding conditions right now. you look mark west creek in the north. they also green valley creek and colgan creek there in the north bay near sebastopol in grayton looking at some flooding continuing their that flood warning continuing tonight may need to be extended until tomorrow morning. we're continuing to see those creeks above flood stage at this time. we are going to expect to see some changes coming our way as we head in toward the next couple days. tonight, if you are stepping outside plan on a few more scattered showers popping up around the bay area. isolated thunderstorm is not out of the woods yet but looks stay closed. >> until further notice after a big chunk of road just broke off during yesterday's storm. the road is pretty popular for, you know, going from fremont to no. a piece of the eastbound lane about a mile from signal just collapsed into the alameda creek yesterday morning. today crews

inspected the road and moved barriers around the damage. no word tonight on when that road will reopen. but thp says it will stay closed, at least at least for the next couple days. the only detours around the closure are 6.80, to the south and 5.80, to the north. and take a look at your screen here. these are the other highways that are closed today due to all the storms highway 12 in sonoma county is a shutdown between fremont and what mom roads also in sonoma county highway one. 21 that is shut down between arnold drive and 8th street. in the south bay. a mudslide shut down highway 9 between sanborn road redwood gulch in saratoga. you can see that tree. >> came down because of it. crews say it's the same area that had a mud slide just a few weeks ago. the road is expected to reopen about 8 o'clock tomorrow night. pacifica pier was supposed to partially reopened today, but with high waves expected that has been push now to thursday.

>> part of the pier reopened last wednesday after being closed since november due to damage from the winter storms. the city also closed the pier over the weekend ahead of the recent storms passing through. no word on when the pier will fully. we open engineers say that a complete assessment of the damage won't be finished until march because storms in between now and then could actually cause more damage. here's a look at how things are faring at the local airport stuff driving and tough flying around the bay area at sfo. >> 238 flights were delayed. 7 flights canceled at oakland airport. 47 delays. 3 cancellations san jose airport. 55 delays and one cancellation to stay up-to-date with the storm online. you can keep up with current conditions and road closures by going to kron 4 dot com. a woman in danville says her home has been vandalized twice in the last 4 months. most recently on friday. >> when a food products tossed

all over her house and her car was broken into kron four's rob nesbitt, talk to the homeowner today. reports from danville with what she had to say. >> the vandalism happened in this danville neighborhood behind me, toilet paper and food all over a property sound like a teenager's type of prank but being targeted twice has come at a cost. there was one him. it was just. >> we scrubbed. there's still remnants of food on pam jones, danville, home after 3 people were caught on her ring camera walking up to the front door and vandalizing the side of her house friday syrup, flour eggs. >> on the garage on the side of the house. much more this time. the same thing happened in november. but this time her car was also targeted. back. here is all flour. >> the food leaving stains and scratches that she says will cost her nearly $1000 to repair. there's that the vandals also broke into her car, took out several glass bottles and shattered them on the ground. she can't tell who the people wearing masks are in the security camera

footage, but she teaches at charlotte wood middle school and wonders if students might be involved. it's upsetting. it's scary. >> i'm a teacher and am a firm teacher and i hold kids accountable. and clearly they have an issue with something i've done now or in the past. but this is not the way you handle conflict in life. jones says she filed a police report after both incidents and was told she'd be able to prosecute because they were in my >> property of my car and took stuff out and threw it onto the driveway students at her work are responsible. they can take action of school to consequences that school as well. whether current students past students were complete strangers. she wants those responsible to be held accountable. i think they should have consequences for it and possibly pay for the damages that because i reached out to danville, police in charlotte wood, middle school for comment but have not heard back. >> reporting in danville, i'm rob nesbitt. kron. 4 news. a woman is dead after being knocked off her bike and hit by other cars in palo alto. the crash happened at the intersection of >> garca darryl and newell drive near cannot a park. that

was about 9 o'clock last night. police say the woman was waiting at a light when she was hit by a car from behind that knocked her into the intersection and witnesses say that's when she was hit by at least 2 other cars that kept going. police say the driver of the first car, a teenage boy cooperated with authorities and that no drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. the car also had a dash cam which helped police find other vehicles that were nearby when the crash happened. no word yet tonight on the other drivers involved, 3 men facing charges for the shooting death of a 5 year-old little girl. >> we're back in court for a preliminary hearing today. eliana, chris, it was shot and killed back last april while riding in the car with her family on 8.80, near fremont. police say that a car pulled up next to the car and started shooting at it. roberto and nia emanuel, santiago and christo ai la were all charged with one count of murder and 7 counts of shooting at an

occupied car. in an interview with chp, one of the men told investigators the trio thought the person driving the family car was a part of a rival gang. so they shot at the car. the oakland police commission is holding an open forum for residents to hear from police chief candidates. the formal give the candidates a chance to talk about their qualifications for the job. >> the event will be held next thursday, february 29th from 06:30pm, to 09:00pm. no word yet on exactly where the event will be held last thursday marked one year since the police department has been without a permanent police chief. happening tomorrow in the east bay. hundreds of educators will hold coordinated. simultaneous demonstrations. >> to advocate for that, the needs of students. this is video from the last time the dublin teachers picketed the educators are demanding better pay smaller classes, safer environment, and better recruitment to help retain teachers. city of cupertino just approved its largest single housing project ever

>> in the north bay, crews were out at hanalei high school in sebastopol catching up after a tree fell on a school due to the recent storms. the school was closed today as they work to repair the roof and cut loose branches from nearby trees. no word on when the school will reopen. >> take a look at this. authorities said to rescue this driver after getting stuck in flood water. this is near forestville and sonoma pcounty not far from some basketball. it's near the intersection of war and river roads. the person in the car

was not hurt. a fire reminding drivers to come across flood water like this turn around and do not drive through it or you could end up in that kind of situation or even works. that's right, lawrence, where they say turn around, don't drown. yeah, that's you know, we have the nighttime hours are still seeing flooding in that area near forest hill. you've got to be very careful driving out on the roads. if you see that. >> rhoda being conned. and right now you make sure to turn around. definitely go the other continue. see raindrops falling outside, mostly scattered showers now. but boy, it was coming down for a while. and of course, we started all this wild weather this last week, really late on friday night into saturday. that's when the first of the series of storms begin to impact a bay area looking out towards sfo. good news is they have not had any issues, but here's what we've seen over the past few days late last friday night. how about this? exactly 7 inches of rain on the mountains there in the battle in the north bay, ben lowman, almost 6 inches of

rainfall. santa rosa, right downtown over 4 inches of rain. knapp over 3 inches of rain. richmond over 2 inches and almost 2 inches of rain in san francisco. that is a lot of rain in a short amount of time. and of course, the ground was already saturated from the previous storm. still that rain continuing to fall outside is more widely scattered. but another band of showers being a push its way onshore in parts of the north bay. now and of course, with all this activity, there's a possibility of a cup. more lightning strikes overnight tonight. we saw that today numerous lightning strikes a moving in to the bay area with that paths of thunderstorms moving in the afternoon hours. now we're still on the backside of this. still a chance more lingering showers. i think that will continue overnight tonight into tomorrow morning. maybe couple lingering showers the afternoon. but the worst of it. it is coming to a close. the storm system going to wind down. and boy, it has been quite a series of storms here in the bay area since of this last week and 5, 7, inches of rain in spots. and we're not done quite yet, but we could use a break. as you've seen, you've seen the flooding out

there see the mudslides. i mean, all the wind damage to trees coming down. we're going to get a little bit of a break, i think. but i'm still looking at some very active weather as we head toward the first week in march. a lot of people outside of the stories of just standing there looking at it like feeling helpless. yeah, it was. it was pretty overwhelming. it was loud. yeah. i kind of have to hide going to grocery stores now, you know, nobody wants to talk to me or they want say something to i may not like mister doing glue, right? okay. thank you, laura. thanks, guys. the san francisco, a transit officials meeting this afternoon to talk about last year's installation of a saint or bike lane along valencia street in the city's mission district. >> well, the controversial bike lane has really raised the ire of businesses and he's now led to claims against the city that could lead to a lawsuit. kron four's. dan kerman reports. this bike lane down the center of valencia street between 15th, the 23rd. >> was installed last august is a pilot project. bike safety is important. change is

important. >> and i'm just glad that we have this inventive in san francisco on street. and while some bike riders say it makes them feel safer, merchants complain it's led to the removal of parking spaces, increase congestion and has been devastating for businesses. this is an emergency for us. >> we have lost some of our friends. we've lost some of our community. lot of businesses have closed as a direct result of this and more on the verge of folks the valencia quarter merchants association sent this letter to the sfmta. >> requesting the center bike lane be removed immediately. but another group of merchants is filed claims against the city, which if denied could lead to a lawsuit. these claims seek the removal of the bike lane and compensation for lost income. the claims filed by 3 valencia street merchants. >> contend the center bike lane violates not only the city's charter, which mandates the city protect the economic welfare of its businesses. but it also violates valencia

merchants, civil rights. this permanent infrastructure masquerading as a pilot program. >> we have never been attempted on union street, chestnut street or the civil case. these kinds of disasters projects treat the residents and business businesses of the mission district and other. and other lower-income neighborhoods as if they're expendable had a meeting tuesday. the sfmta indicated it's evaluating the project and is considering changes which could include moving the bike lanes closer to the curbs. again, the sfmta is discussing changes to the center bike lane. >> but at this point, no timeline for when those changes might happen again for many of the businesses along this corridor, change can't happen soon. enough in san francisco, dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> 2 men have been charged with the murder with murder in the deadly mass shooting at the kansas city chiefs super bowl. raleigh woman was killed more than 20 injured. many of them children. prosecutors say

the 2 men were charged with second-degree murder among other charges. they have both been hospitalized since the shooting. no details on that. last week 2 teenagers were arrested on gun related and resisting arrest charges. authorities say additional arrests and more charges are possible. investigators say they think the shooting was a result of some kind of a dispute between several different people. >> united flight heading from sfo to boston had to divert due to an issue with one of the wings. according to united the plane carrying 165 customers. made a stop in denver halfway through its journey, the customers were then moved to another aircraft that flew them back to boston for to boston where they originally were scheduled and they landed safely. the chevron refinery in richmond reported another flaring. this one early this morning that was file video of a previous incident. >> chevron issued a level one hazmat incident around 2 o'clock in the morning, which

means there is no public health effect to the community. firefighters on the to reduce its emissions and agreed to pay millions of dollars in fines. it's all part of a settlement reached by the chevron and martinez refineries and the bay area air quality management district. chevron has agreed to reduce its emissions at the refinery by 70 to 80% and paid 20 million dollars for past fines and 4 future exposures. the martinez refining company says it will pay to install air monitoring equipment. police in atherton are warning the public after they investigated 3 residential burglaries in. >> 3 days, officers are reminding residents to lock up their houses every time they leave. even if it's just for a few minutes, be sure to secure your valuables. that means keep valuable items and safes out of the master bedroom and out of sight the windows and

also to use security systems is visible security measures. act as deterrents and can help law enforcement. >> if you're thinking of buying a home in the bay area study is named 2 bay area cities as the worst for aspiring homeowners. not really a surprise, according to home improvement brand. this old house, san jose and san francisco are the worst out of 145 u.s. cities. they looked at crime rates. annual home insurance premiums median down payments and more to determine the rankings. both cities, san jose and san francisco and a median down payment of more than $100,000. on santa rosa also made the list ranked 131 in santa rosa at 105. here's just a few weeks away now from super tuesday and the race for the california senate seat is heating up. >> we'll have details on the candidates that starting to candidates that starting to gain momentum.
