power line 40 feet in the air. the terrifying accident also leaving thousands without power in san jose. thank you for joining us here on companies at 5. i'm noelle bellow. i'm ken wayne. grant is off tonight. san jose fire says 2 men were in a bucket lift which was operating near the intersection of zenker road and blasio street. >> in north san jose kron four's gayle ong is there now with the latest kale. >> yes, can. well, that bucket live from behind me has since been lowered in the last hour. the 2 men have been rescued and they were rescued safely and it took a while because pg e has some strict rules, 2 and protocols in order to get them out of there. so we'll explain that in a minute. let's show you that video of that rescue. so you can see one of the workers coming down this ladder after suffering severe burns to his upper body and arms after making contact with a power line on the job at this emergency call came in just before 11:00am and it took about 3, and a half hours for them to be rescued until

electricity and equipment was grounded and secured by pg. and here's the battalion chief of san jose fire. >> one of the things that pg e wants to reiterate is any time you're working around any high voltage lines, you want to stay at least 30 feet away. obviously in this those protocols weren't followed. so we weren't sure what happened there. >> and we're told that 2 construction workers are contractors for this apartment community here. and at last check about 3,000 customers were they lost power. i did speak to a woman who lived inside the apartment building. she said she heard the whole ordeal and said sounded like an many of the residents were watching. >> as pg and we're here taking care of the situation and fire crews are helping those 2 men get down to safety. both have been taken to the hospital being treated for burns. this is the anchor boulevard right both lanes are back open so traffic can pass through here.

and just at this hour, just pg e crews and some emergency officials remain here at the scene. and in the meantime, cal osha will be investigating this as this was a workplace incident. that is the situation here live in san jose. go on kron. 4 all right, dale, thank you. >> in the east bay, parents of students in the brentwood unified school district are unhappy about. ed being taught several speaking out at wednesday night's school board meeting about how they believe 4th and 5th grade is too early for that course. kron four's rob nesbitt, talk to the district's superintendent. he joins us now live from our newsroom with the story. rob. brentwood saying they don't n- want their 4th. >> and 5th graders learning at the superintendent says he understands their concerns, which is why there's an opt out option. during wednesday's school board meeting at the brentwood unified school district board member stephanie williams rogers made a motion approve. >> to discontinue family life,

education in grades 4, 5, followed by applause from the audience. many parents speaking out about the education curriculum and how they feel it's inappropriate for their children. i think the content of this new curriculum is highly inappropriate for 9.10 year-olds. most of our kids at this age still believe in santa claus, but will now be taught about happiness and that china looks to classmates at school superintendent doctor dana eaton says that has been talked to 4th and 5th graders in the district for more than 20 years that the curriculum was updated this year to align with the state requirements are curriculum was was very old probably been around for that 20 years that we've been doing 4th and 5th grade and was teacher created. and so because of the new requirements of the county, california, the youth fact we were required to update our curriculum. most parents wednesday night took issue with the video students watch during the class called puberty in me. how many little boys are going to go home and google but doctor eaton says he understands that parents have concerns about the topic of which is why the curriculum

is not required. this is an optional program for students parents are able to opt their children out and why no other school board members voted to discontinue the curriculum motion has failed for lack of a second. >> there are about 10,000 students in the brentwood unified school district around 330 parents signed a petition to try to get education removed from 4th and 5th grade reporting in the newsroom. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news. >> san ramon valley unified school district facing a lawsuit now over how it handled an alleged assault of a student. the lawsuit filed by a california resident only identified as jane doe says the theater arts teacher gave hand massages to female students. have them sit on his lap and made comments to the students. we've reached out to the school district for their response to the lawsuit. we have not yet heard back. happening tonight. highway 12 westbound in santa rosa is sctoe closed to the weekend for pavement

couple high clouds up above. otherwise some very comfortable temperatures running well into the 60's in many spots. it is 66 degrees in san francisco. 65 in napa right now. 65 also in santa rosa. and 66 in san jose. so this easily, the warmest evening we've seen in quite a while. even 68 degrees right now in hayward overall. yeah. high pressure in control. just a couple high clouds drifting across that ridge. otherwise some beautiful weather storm clouds still well off the coastline. that's where they are going to stay beginning to swirl further and further south. now it's going make its way all down toward southern california. we may get a chance of a couple sprinkles from that system as we head in towards sunday. but tomorrow looks like a fantastic one of the warmest day, probably the warmest day of the year. so far in the bay area. that being said tonight, if you're headed out the door, the temperatures are going to be cooling off into the sunset. just a couple passing high clouds up above. maybe couple patches of fog showing up in the valleys, but still looks like some very nice weather ahead as high pressure is going to hold on build in for one more day. that is going to

hold that system off the coastline and bring us some warm weather around the bay plan on some spring-like conditions all around all the way to the coast. thank you. a 17 year-old boy is behind bars, accused of trying to break into a shutdown bowling alley in pacifica. pacifica. police say. >> officers responded to reports of a robbery on wednesday at the former siebel building right off cabrillo highway. when police arrived, they say they found the teen trying to run away from the area while being searched. officers say they found items that have been taken from inside the business. the boy was arrested on several burglary charges last month. siebold closed up shop for good after 60 years in business. >> anger and frustration coming in tonight from some pg and e customers after hearing the utility increased its profit by almost 25% last year. but customers didn't see any relief on their bills. kron four's dan kerman reports. >> but blew my by fremont. resident robert carter is talking about pacific gas and electric. the utility just

reported a profit for 2023 of 2.2, 4 billion dollars. that's almost a 25% increase over the previous year and comes following a series of rate hikes that a customer bills go through. the roof of the situation is becoming kind of untenable. it's just keep eating in 2. the the money that we can use to live for its part pg and e says we're excited about the future we're creating for customers and investors differentiating ourselves and safety and financial performance while building a system that meets the climate challenges of tomorrow. the fact that >> pg and e. >> is booking record profits for its shareholders. >> while >> rate payers, customers have record high bills. it's completely outrageous and unacceptable. martone is with the utility reform network. >> he says it's time the california public utilities commission stopped rubber

>> kron 4 is your local election headquarters. it is crunch time for the 2 republican candidates trying to become the next president of the united states. south carolina voters will be heading to the polls tomorrow for the state's republican primary today, former president trump accused nikki haley of hurting the republican party by staying in the race. he also urged republicans to unite around him so they can defeat democrats in hhe general election. >> he's not doing well and we can't let it happen. you know, it we have to stick together. nikki haley is losing to me. looks like she's going to lose by 25 or 30 points. that's a lot. >> meanwhile, haley is hoping for an upset in her home state where she served as governor for 2 terms. she says it's too soon to count her out of the race. >> this is the time south carolina can really step up

and show the direction that we want our country to go in. an old trump can't win a general election. >> trump is already declaring victory as haley is trailing him by a wide margin in the polls. even if she loses to trump tomorrow, haley says she will be staying in the race. >> today we heard from our political analyst michael yaki about what voters can expect in tomorrow's primary in south carolina. here's what he had to say. she's going to get. >> pretty much tomorrow night in south carolina. but she's and she's made it pretty clear that she knows of that's going to happen. if you're she's ready to clear, just going to stay in the race until the bitter end. and again, it's a calculated strategy to just stay there because if something does happen, trump, if he gets, could it be because a trial that he gets convicted before the convention? she can lay claim to being the only person left standing, who should take the nomination. so it's it's it's a big because it relies on

area. this one going to have that springfield to if you're headed outside and want to enjoy, think really saturday is the day to do that will be the best of the 2 days and us and is not going to be that bad. but there's a chance we could start to deal with some showers and just to be scattered. but still out there now. what a nice friday outside lots of sunshine really some nice. but a couple high clouds moving in toward half moon bay. so some people out there walking along the water's edge and why not offshore winds kicking in that help to warm up the temperatures. see him right there. but they're light than that means. just made for a nice day. nothing too breezy outside. and it's gonna stay that way. we're going to see these offshore winds continuing as we head through the night tonight into early tomorrow morning. skies looking good. then by tomorrow afternoon, probably going to see a sea breeze start to kick in late in the day. overall, though, storm clouds continue to churn in the middle of the civic. we are still in the middle of a very active the winter season now. and so even though the storm system not going have a whole lot of effect on us. so spending on the move, this if it eventually gets a little bit closer and possibly going bring with it a chance, a few scattered showers as we head

county this morning. the highway patrol says initial investigations suggest a chevy pickup truck crossed over and collided with a gmc van killing the driver of the pickup and 7 others in the van. officers say several men in the van were not wearing their seat belts. the 8 victims have not been identified, but we're told the group apparently farmworkers was traveling in the van heading to lie and farm in firebaugh for work. >> to stay fatal injuries. i'm i'm a believer room belts. i believe that he had to be wearing their seat belts. we would have a much higher survival rate. >> one man in the van was taken to a hospital. we don't know his condition at this time. the investigation into all of this is ongoing. >> san francisco police may be making fewer traffic stops. the city's police commission passing a measure this week barring stops for low-level offenses, which include failure to display or properly mount license plates, registration tags and driving

with expired registration. the moves come after an analysis of sfp. d's data revealed black drivers were stopped at 6 times the rate of white drivers earlier this month. callum unity sent a letter to the commission requesting the policy move forward after being put on hold for 2 years. we did just received a statement from the police officers association and san francisco reads in part, quote, the police commission's decision was a huge boost to their egos. but it's a colossal bust for public safety for san franciscans. the police commission has effectively told the criminals preying on our city their safe from arrest. if they obey the speed limit and keep expired tags on their cars. fewer stops will equal. fewer legitimate searches, which means more guns and drugs will be on our streets, end quote. >> as california grapples with an opioid crisis. a state lawmaker is sounding the alarm over a newly emerging drug deemed to be even more lethal when mixed with fentanyl and other opioids. our capitol

correspondent eytan wallace gives us a look at new legislation targeting drug thrt's often referred to as trank. >> this is an on going crisis. some remember just me baynes not mincing words about the opioid epidemic impacting the golden state and the nation. data from the california department of public health showed in 2022. more than 6,470 california has died of fentanyl poisoning that you're alone coming out to about 124 deaths per week. but now there's concern the crisis could get even worse due to this new and emerging drug known as i often referred to as tranq and trying don't we need to work harder to defeat this. she says that no didn't rank is not approved for human use. specifically. it's a non opioid tranquilizer typically used on horses and in specialized veterinary settings. but in humans, it's been known to cause severe flesh, eating rooms, sedation, and death. still, it's become

increasingly prevalent in communities and on the streets where it's been found mixed with fentanyl and other opioids. a combination deemed even more lethal and fentanyl alone. what's worse? the problem seems to be getting worse. a study from the centers for disease control found in 2019, the national monthly percentage of poisoning deaths involving a mixture of fentanyl and silencing stood at 3%. but that number increased to 11% in 2022, we need to get. >> ahead of this. instead we're falling way behind. that's why baynes herself, a central valley medical doctor with years of experience treating drug addiction has introduced ab 30 29 to increase silencing testing statewide and categorize it in the drug schedule classification system originally created to educate the public on the drugs addiction, potential and its potential to cause harm. it also helps determine penalties for drug dealers and traffickers and but can become addicted to what's on the streets. people don't understand the problem.

>> history made for cal state students. they approved a move to form the largest student worker union in the country. sf state students celebrating that announcement with other groups from california campuses. over zoom today. students who have on campus assistant jobs launched the effort 2 years ago demanding more pay and sick time. noah get it says a student who helped organize the movement. he says he makes less than the san francisco minimum wage and would like to see more compensation as well as reduced fees. >> personally, i have been inviting the edge of having to go into debt to fund my own education. i went to community college before transferring here. i've been saving up for many years. i've been doing everything i can financially rights to not have to take on the burden of student and
