frigid start. livermore, dublin, fairfield, napa, sonoma, santa rosa, just to name a few spots that are well down into the upper 30's vacaville among our colder areas, along with sonoma at 36 degrees right now back to those frost advisories. as i told you yesterday, up in marin, sonoma and napa counties, these will stay in effect through 09:00am this morning. skies are clear on radar. but if we zoom out across the region, we've got our next weather maker sitting to our north and that will drop in starting tomorrow, resulting in a big drop in temperatures and unsettled wet weather for several days, especially for the sierra just likely to be impassable into apthe weekend where we're sitting today. temperatures in the 60's, some of us could get close to 70 degrees. so truly our last dry, mild day before we get winter back in full force. as for the roads right nice easy commute so far. nothing to worry about out there. not too windy and certainly not what this morning bay bridge looking

just fine. no fog on our spans. and that includes the richmond center fell, which looks crystal clear this morning. same for you. crossing the golden gate rate hikes on the year that. >> happening tomorrow, the oakland police commission, they're going to be holding an open forum for residents for you to get a chance to know the current group of police chief candidates names all released last night, candidate number one, al gore pridgen is on your screen right now. he was chief and sally in jail for about 2 years 4, he was placed on administrative leave last september in a press release from the city of san leandro. they say his lead was due to policy violations. he resigned from the department last year. the second candidate is floyd mitchell. now. he is 30 years of law enforcement service and was hired to be chief of police in temple, texas. he's currently the first vice president. all the texas police chiefs association there. their candidate is lisa davis. she's currently the investitis

bureau commander. that's what the cincinnati police department, the commission says she specializes in addressing crime in cities, building community relationships. and the final candidate is luis molina. he is the assistant deputy mayor for the public safety for the city of new york. only to work in law enforcement for the district attorney's office and corrections. he's known for community engagement, also improving conditions for residents. well, the oakland police commission, they meet on the second and 4th thursday of every month. the next meeting is going to tomorrow night at 6.30, public. you're encouraged to a 10 so you can share your ideas and your thoughts either in person or by commissioner directly. well, san francisco residents there are now grappling with to storefront losses. one, the iconic macy's store in union square. other walgreens on sacramento and front street. not a chance to talk with neighbors who say they're

pretty concerned about seniors that live in the area. kron four's. sara stinson has that story. >> in the final hours of operation, more than 2 dozen people who live in downtown san francisco gathered outside the walgreens. 2, 7, 5, sacramento street hoping their voices will be heard. you know, a pharmacy like a grocery store. >> they you know, they're oftentimes the center of the community. they're really important needs. diana taylor has organized efforts to plea with walgreens and the city to stop the closure. but unfortunately, they've had no look what we found out that it wasn't about. >> human needs or what the community needs. it was all about the numbers. a spokesperson for walgreens tells kron 4 the locations closure is due to a significant decrease in foot traffic since the pandemic. but that's not what we saw while walking in the area with alec bash who lives just blocks away.

>> i think we've got put your foot traffic in this area and we have more and more every >> fashion taylor are among those worried about seniors not having access to a nearby pharmacy. the new year's walgreens will now be a half mile away on montgomery street. taylor says this closure will take away their independence. the seniors, they're terrified. they feel like they don't have any choice if people on walkers. warren wheelchairs, houston, to cage walking along and other longtime residents worry this will only hurt the progress the city is making in the downtown area. well, things closing that's taken away or amenities and i worry that people can start start moving out of the because what we have. >> well, that was sara stinson reporting spokesperson for walgreens says all pharmacy files are now being transferred to that location on kahmaree street. company also says they're offering free and reduced prescription delivery for the next 90 days. the group of neighbors. we've got a chance to talk with, say

they have not given up hope just yet. they still plan to save. walgreens will reconsider their decision to close. this also comes as the iconic macy's location in san francisco is set to close their doors. macy's announced they're closing 150 underperforming stores by 2026, 50 of them will close by the end of the year union square location is going to be open the rest of the year, but then it's going to close in 2026. giving macy's enough time to find a buyer for that property. got a chance to talk to mayor london breed during kron. 4 news at 3. she emphasized macy's decision was not because of crime in the city. >> i talked to the folks from macy's that was not mentioned in its factors to close because it was about its entire portfolio. it's about the profitability of the changes in retail and how people are shopping, how their online businesses is definitely doing very well. and they had to make some really hard decisions. and and

the real estate that this macy's is setting in is extremely valuable. >> so it may bring added that the next step is going to be a fine to use for the space that's profitable. thle tunion square. well, what was able to also speak to some shoppers and they were shocked and they were disappointed to find out. macy's is closing union square. >> really sad about that sad about. union square mean this is the heart of the city in. you know, it's one more blow locals and the way the world is starting to see is has >> well, you'll still be able to enjoy the macy's christmas tree. the puppies in the cats in the holiday windows. any other macy's tradition in union square just not forever. let's head to the east bay, as the mayor of berkeley says he's concerned about the city

and the east bay as a whole becoming a hospital desert alta. bates summit medical center is scheduled to close by 2030, kron. four's amanda hari spoke with the mayor about his attempt to ensure berkeley in the surrounding area has emergency medical care. >> ulta bates is berkeley's only full-service hospital. it also supports people albany and elsa rita. the mayor of berkeley says leaders need to take action now prevent health care crisis in the future. berkeley mayor jesse arreguin announcing a new partnership to address the impacts of all to bates summit. medical center's scheduled closure. >> summit health has announced the hospital will close by 2030. i'm deeply worried that when someone has a health emergency, it will take too long for them to get to. >> and emergency like much city council voted to set aside funding to study the ramifications, the closure and how they can secure health care access in the future. he says they're also working with leaders in richmond else. we do albany and alameda and

contra costa county. it's this isn't a berkeley issued. it is a regional >> problem. they're also in communication with some help and are considering all options to keep the hospital open. the city of berkeley is willing to. >> pass. bonds are taxes were willing to look at permitting. we're willing we're going to do anything in 2015 doctors medical center in san pablo closed. >> causing a surge of patients at alta. bates. he's worried the same thing will happen in oakland. it's all to bait. shuts down summit. >> hospital downtown oakland. that's where where they intend to serve all the people that currently got all the that just is not going to work. it's also going overload. some the mayor says he wants to make sure the east bay is prepared for what may happen next as at the end of the day want to control our own destiny. >> and so whether that's bringing another health care provider, whether that's forming a hospital district,

we cannot let these baby com hospital. that's the mayor says. he's still hopeful they can continue to work with some health to find a solution. >> in berkeley amanda hari kron, 4 news. >> over where police arrested a man they suspect was involved in up to 8 burglaries. police received a call around 02:00am monday from a home near bartlett court. and we'll away on a car burglary. suspect was gone when police arrived, but they found a car in blood at the scene. nearby police found man matching the description of the suspect. the suspect has been identified as antonio zamora, who allegedly that fresh cuts on his hands and property that was allegedly for recent car burglaries. police found a more responsible for 4 burglaries and suspects. this is but for more, he had to be taken to the martinez detention facility after that. still ahead of the kron, 4 morning news, a major winter storm. >> is expected to hammer this year this week making travel nearly impossible in the area.

the sierra right now. >> winter storm expected to hit the lake tahoe area. supposed to bring pretty heavy snow with it. and that is expected to make heading to the snow this weekend. pretty much a nightmare. timing of the storm is not ideal for businesses going into what would normally be a pretty busy weekend. >> my business, we rent skis. we rent equipment, things like that. we've already had some people moving around the reservations for the weekend. so that's not going to happen. >> well, despite impact businesses, they are looking forward to seeing the benefits of the storm after the fact since tahoe relies on snow or in the winter. all right. well, john, you've been talking about this storm. that's subtly approaching. now, just to get a little closer to a good morning. absolutely right on the doorstep now. and this likely to be one of the most significant of the season for the sierra. >> we have been talking earlier this year about how we were falling behind dispersed snowpack goes. but this one is

going to tip us right over the edge, the other direction we're looking at temperatures over the next 3 days and this year that are going to get bigger, cold down into the 20's at lake tahoe on saturday. and with that snowfall picking up starting tomorrow into saturday, don't expect to be heading up there during these days, nor heading back down to the bay area. this is really the core of the snowmaking days up in the sierra today is an easy travel dates back down. if you need to do that, if you are heading up there, prepare to be snowed in for a few days. donner summit anywhere between 5 in 10 feet of snowfall. that's the very highest elevations on i-80 right there. that is likely going to result in multiple closures. both on i-80 as well as highway 50 notice that snow level also gets down to some very low elevations that's going to get down low enough that we'll see it on some of our mountain tops right here in the bay area. while most of us are seeing some really cold rain. now, of course, this does mean that travel conditions are going to be very, very rough. in fact, the national weather

service has issued blizzard warnings for the sierra starting thursday through saturday. snow level will fall as low as 2000 to even 1500 feet in elevation. it's very low down into the foothills. and again, once you get above 5,000 feet, she's going to be too much for those clouds to keep up with. initially. so don't expected to be doing a lot of moving around. you are up in the sierra during these days. just have those go bags ready. and of course, plenty of supplies last year, a couple days right now, though, the sierra the north coast and the bay is really quiet. nothing going on out there just yet. in fact, today is going to be quite the warm day. we are seeing this nice little area of high pressure just temporarily in right now, but low pushes on in from the gulf of alaska and along with it in trenches, some really cold air in across the region. so this is going to be a cold system. in addition to being s% huge snow maker. that means the next several days for the

bay area. also going to get pretty chilly for us today. on the other hand, really nice and mild as we make our way towards the evening. tonight, you'll start to see a few clouds and then we get to tomorrow and we'll start to see some showers ahead of that cold front pushing in during the morning. we'll see light to moderate showers at first picking up into the afternoon. rainfall tomorrow for the bay area, anywhere between a quarter and a half an inch for most urban areas. but we're going to add more on top of that by the time that we even just reach sunday, we'll have seen as much as 2 to even 3 inches up in our mountains and mostly over an inch for urban areas. we're going to add more on top of that after that throughout the course of next week. we have some pretty generous rainfall totals for the bay. as for today, daytime highs are going to be in the 60's. take a look at san jose getting up to 68 degrees today. it is the warm before the storm. oakland at 63 was city gets 62 tomorrow. temperatures will cool down into the 50's and we're going to see that way for a few days. we do have showers that

are possible into next week as well. but for sure, our heaviest of rainfall thursday friday and saturday. as for your roads, what we got out there this morning is easy conditions. if there's things you need to get done today or if you just need to head into the office one day this week, maybe call to work from home day, come tomorrow as well as friday. mateo bridge at 12 minutes. not getting in your way there. richmond center fell 8 minutes and nothing holding you up at the golden gate either. nice and calm and definitely no fog. rain and high winds on. thank you for that. >> happening today, oakland students and teachers. they plan a walkout support of the cease-fire in gaza. walkouts going to be for a press conference. it's going to followed by a rally at usd board meeting. that's on second avenue in oakland for 30. the event will be led by the black student union. there. san francisco supervisors. they're apologizing to african-americans and their descendants for decades of what they call races, laws and policies by the city. all 11

quite long and drama-filled to say the least. the last was that was sent over to mayor sheng thao. she rejected in this new list has a list alternately all oakland outsiders with 3 coming from out of state were going to put a photo up on your screens. you can see all for the candidates and i'm in a list them from left to right now. the first is lisa davis, the current cincinnati assistant police chief. the second is louise molina. new york's current assistant deputy mayor for public safety. the 3rd is abdul pridgen, the former leandro police chief. and the last is floyd mitchell, the current vice president of texas police chiefs association. so diving a little bit deeper into each candidate. the first abdul pridgen. he was a police chief in san leandro for about 2 years up until last week. and prior to this, he was placed on administrative leave last september for allegedly violating the department's policy. the next candidate floyd mitchell has about 30 years of policing experience and was hired as police chief in temple in la vix, texas, but resigned last year after being criticized for his

department and how it was dealing with 9-1-1. calls. currently he is the first vice president of the texas police chiefs association. the next candidate is lisa davis. she is currently the assistant police chief in cincinnati and investigation bureaus commander, the final candidate is luis molina. he's currently the assistant deputy mayor for public safety for the city of new york. and he's worked in law enforcement. the district attorney's office and the corrections office for a few years all together. now, these 4 candidates will be appearing at a public forum tomorrow night in the city of oakland at 6.30, where residents can comment and ask questions and just give overall opinions tritnally following this 3 of the 4 will be sent to the mayor's office where mayor sheng thao can gather and pick one of the candidates or she can reject all of them as she did last year. currently, the city of oakland has been without a police chief for about a year after the firing of former police chief leronne armstrong. any did want to see

on this list, but clearly was not on this list. now when it comes to what the community wants. the last time we covered this when that list came out, many said that they were looking for somebody who was strong, somebody who would take charge of the city and ultimately bring down some of the crime rate continues to rise here in the city of oakland. as we get more details on to morris we'll keep you updated. that's a very latest here in oakland michael thomas will send it back to you guys live in the studio. all right, michael, thank you for that update. there. >> let's head of the south bay jose is ranked as one of the top places to live in the u.s.. so what makes the city so great grove was will tran live on san jose will have you found out? maybe it's the lights and all of the glowing handsome 4th best city in

america when it comes to quality of life. this study was done by us news and they sent out their real estate reporters. they looked at many factors reyna, including. quality of life. one, right. that's one thing. there's also crime rates. this average commute times quality of education and access to health care. they factor all those things in and out of the top. 25 san jose came in number 4. san jose is consistently high on many other charts, including well last year they also did their own study about the happiest places to live in america. and in that particular study, san jose came in number 3, by the way, on that study, fremont came in number one as far as quality of life. well, that's good

news and bad news for people who live in san jose are looking to live in san jose. obviously that adds to your real estate value. but if you're looking to buy in san jose, that terms of quality of life rate and you want to take a guess before i give you the answer. >> carol, as somebody was born and raised in the bay in oakland, i want to buy a so just go ahead and tell me. >> ok, >> ann arbor, michigan. that number one on the list. as far as quality of life. and in case you're wondering, it's not just small cities. our smaller cities number. 25 on that list. the big apple.

>> okay. makes a lot of sense, but i'm biased. they area's okay. meantime, we have some new data from a silicon valley group aiming to end homelessness. it shows that unfortunately santa clara county is housing, more homeless people than they ever have. but at the same time, unhoused population is growing. so that's how they factor that number. it says nearly 4500 unhoused people more house 2023. the rate of homelessness in santa clara county. also jumped 24%. so that's more than 800 households in the county representative from destination home says the cost of rent is a huge factor. there. >> we know we have guy rocketing rents in our community. and people aren't making enough money. and the combination of those 2 coupled with the fact that we don't have affordable, truly affordable housing options of the scale that we really need means that so many people in our community are just one
