that oakland continues to see in continues to rise this morning. i did reach out to the naacp and hoping to chat with them within the next few hours or so. during the last time a list was released, they did have an opinion on what they were looking for and what they were hoping to for the city of oakland. but this morning in oakland, michael thomas, i will send it back to you to live in the studio. michael, thank you very much. >> well, san francisco residents are now grappling with to storefront losses. one is the iconic macy's store in union square and the other one is the walgreens on sacramento and front street. >> we spoke with neighbors who say they're a little worried right now about the seniors in that area. but for sarah stinson has that story for us. >> in the final hours of operation, more than 2 dozen people who live in downtown san francisco gathered outside the walgreens. 2, 7, 5, sacramento street hoping their voices will be heard. you know, a pharmacy like a grocery store. >> they you know, they're

oftentimes the center of the community. they're really important needs. diana taylor has organized efforts to plea with walgreens and the city to stop the closure. but unfortunately, they've had no look what we found out that it wasn't about. >> human needs or what the community needs. it was all about the numbers. a spokesperson for walgreens tells kron 4 the locations closure is due to a significant decrease in foot traffic since the pandemic. but that's not what we saw while walking in the area with alec bash who lives just blocks away. >> i think we've got put your foot traffic in this area and we have more and more every >> fashion taylor are among those worried about seniors not having access to a nearby pharmacy. the new year's walgreens will now be a half mile away on montgomery street. taylor says this closure will take away their independence. the seniors, they're terrified. they feel like they don't have any choice if people on walkers.

warren wheelchairs, houston, to cage walking along and other longtime residents worry this will only hurt the progress the city is making in the downtown area. well, things closing that's taken away or amenities and i worry that people can start start moving out of the because what we have. >> well, that was sara stinson reporting now, a spokesperson for walgreens says. >> all pharmacy files are being transferred to that location on that kahmaree street. the company also says they're offering free and reduced prescription delivery for the next 90 days. the group of neighbors that we talked to. so they just haven't given up hope yet. they still plan to see walgreens will reconsider their choice to close. well with that closure of walgreens that comes as the iconic macy's location in san francisco is set to close now to. >> macy's announced yesterday they were going to be shutting down 150 of their underperforming stores by 2026, 50 of those stores are going to close this year. the union square location is open

the rest of the year. but then after that, it's going to be shut down. it will close officially by 2026. macy's says it will give them enough time to find a buyer for the property. we spoke with mayor london breed, in fact, invited her into the kron. 4 news 3 yesterday and she emphasized that macy's decision had nothing to do with concerns about rising crime. >> when i talked to the folks from macy's that was not mentioned in its factors to close because it was about its entire portfolio. it's about the profitability of the changes in retail and how people are shopping, how their online businesses is definitely doing very well. and they had to make some really hard decisions. and and the real estate that this macy's is setting in is extremely valuable. >> well, mayor breed added that the next step will be to find a use for that space that's profitable and attracts people to union square kron. 4 did speak to san francisco shoppers. many of them shocked with what they heard.

>> i'm really sad about that sad about. union square mean this is the heart of the city and you know, it's one more blow to the locals and the way the world is starting to see is has >> well, you'll still be able to enjoy the macy's christmas tree and the puppies and cats that they put in the windows during the holidays. other macy's traditions to will continue at union square, at least for this year. after that, that's another question. >> well, san francisco supervisors are now apologizing to african-americans and their descendants decades of what they call races laws and policies by the city. all 11 members of the board sponsored a declaration. so was it a joint boston as the 2 major u.s. cities to now apologize so far, there have been no movement. one, any of the committee's monitor proposals, including a lump sum cash payment to residents or a guaranteed income.

>> in the south bay, new data from the silicon valley group aiming to end homelessness shows that santa clara county is housing more homeless people than ever before. but at the same time, the unhoused population is growing too. destination home says that nearly 4500 unhoused people were housed in 2023. but the great of homeless people in santa clara county also jumped 24% representative from destination home says the cost of rent is a major factor. >> we know we have guy rocketing rents in our community. and people aren't making enough money. and the combination of

>> 8.13 is the time in new this morning. the san jose city council has approved a new lease and contracts for new management of raging waters. the city council member domingo candela says that the agreement allows region waters to operate this summer. the park originally opened back in 1985, but it closed indefinitely last

september after ending its lease with the city. so the fact that it's back up and running or will be this summer is going to be obviously big news for a lot of family and to love splashing in the water side of things to go there when i was younger. so glad there. >> bring it back. but we will be going any time soon. ground at the moment. they would have been a good day. i you know, i need to no the we're going raging waters in a different eyes water slides will be we are looking out there at diamond peak where it's going to be some blizzard conditions. honestly, take a look at this view from diamond peak looking down at lake tahoe. it looks kind of like spring. we've had some unseasonably warm weather up there about a transition really fast, though, back into that mid winter kind of stuff tomorrow, friday and saturday, the easier days to watch any travels up into the sierra likely still going to be digging out into sunday of the weekend as heavy snow will be piling up in feet for the sierra. as you can see, we've

got 5 to 10 feet of it across donner summit on its way. this is going to result likely in multiple closures on i-80 highway 50 here in the sierra looking to head back down to the bay. today is your day to do it. if you are in the sierra and are going to stay put, make sure that you're bringing supplies with you and make sure that you have plenty of food in case you do get snowed in. we'll also have snowfall up in lake and mendocino county. some of our mountain tops and sonoma and napa counties mount saint helene, it could see 3 to 6 inches of snowfall up there up north. as for the sierra blizzard warnings take effect tomorrow through saturday, snow level drops, especially saturday morning as low as 1500 feet in elevation. and yes, that multiple feet of snowfall. when you go to those higher elevations today, the sierra and the bay and even the north coast are nice and dry, though. just sunshine for you today. good storm prep day. get those errands out of the way before this massive system nudge is the jet stream well to the south and brings with it a heavy dose of snow but also a huge cool down in

temperatures. temperatures will be really cool by the weekend. looking at the next 24 hours here, futurecast shows today's sunshine this afternoon into evening. we'll start to see a few clouds. and then as we move into tomorrow morning, some light showers arriving to the bay during morning hours. rainfall picking up tomorrow afternoon. rain estimates anywhere between quarter of an inch to three-quarters of an inch tomorrow. going to pick up even more than that into friday and saturday. some of us could see well over 2 inches of rain by early sunday morning and will add even more on top of that into next week as well. today's daytime highs will be comfortable nice and cool in the low 60's in oakland in sf while san jose nearing 70 degrees today. tomorrow starts or trend of 50's. and by saturday we're barely even making the 50's our coldest day of the forecast. thursday through saturday days to avoid too much travel next week, looking unsettled as well. all right, john david, roads this morning traveling into the city right now, no access on your bridges.

>> 19 min, so that fremont street exit san mateo bridge about 30's, things are a little busy there. your riches center fielder. it's 17 minutes and the golden gate bridge. 37 to the tolls. 35. >> all right. 8.17 is the time for your local election headquarters. and we're less than a week away from the primary election day and leaders from both california's democratic and republican parties say they're doing everything they can to reach voters. california democratic leaders say this year their strategy is to really work the ground game, go door-to-door, help voters register. they're pretty excited. they say about all 3 democratic candidates in the race for california's open senate seat as well as the potential to maybe even win a house seat. >> it could take back the house if california turn some of these red states blue. so we're very exciting and we're doing everything we can to turn out every vote. >> well, as for the california republican party, they say volunteers have been reaching out to voters at community centers this year and data from the secretary of state's office shows the republican

party actually gained more than 45,000 voters this year with the democratic party losing about 30,000 republican leaders say with more new voters, they're pretty optimistic about steve garbage. chances of winning that open senate seat. >> i feel really good about it and having a political outsider that's really been engaged and many communities around our state over the years. this is that part, not just republicans for californians. >> well, currently registered democrats outnumber registered republicans by a factor of 2 to one here in california. and a reminder your election day, you have to have your ballot turned in or have your mail-in envelope postmarked no later than march 5th, if you want your vote cast and counted and a reminder we will be collecting all the latest numbers on election night here. kron 4 election headquarters here. tune in, march 5th. we'll have live election results from all around the bay area. our coverage begins at 08:00pm and you can watch the tallies come in in real time.

>> for your money, there's a new study this morning. this is that silicon valley is really slow to bounce back from the pandemic. well, the industry isn't necessarily strong and like people think it is. according to the silicon valley index, 2023 jobs in the region grew by 1000 compared to years past, which was 10,000 to 50,000 jobs, even though we're seeing cuts in the tech industry tech is still economic powerhouse in the bay. the bay area's 20 largest tech companies dropped by 7% of the region's workforce in 2023. well, roughly 18,800 workers, however, there are still 37,000 more people working for bay area tech companies at the end of 2023 compared to pre-pandemic numbers. researchers say while recovery is slow is stepping in. so looking valley remains powerful. half of innovation. >> one man has been arrested in morgan hill in connection with multiple pharmacy robberies. police say rodolfo duarte is robbing or was

robbing the stores in order to get prescription medication. they say the first incident happened on december 30th. it was a rite aid on monterey street. they say he walked up to the pharmacy with a gun, demanded medicine. and then later that day, a similar later that day, a similar robbery happen

>> well, in the east bay, san juan, police now warning elderly residents about a scam telling them they won grand prize. scammers pretend to be from publishers clearing house with a sweepstakes prize to hand out. they then tell the victim that in order to get the money they have to pay the taxes on the prize with a cashier's check. police say no legitimate business, whatever. ask for money over the phone and that you should never provide bank account information to a stranger or give them remote access to your personal computer. apple has reportedly shut down its decade-old quest to build an autonomous electric car. you may have seen some of these cars on the roads in sunnyvale. bloomberg now reporting the move will mean about 1000 jobs or so will be cut or reassigned for apple, many of whom will now work on ai endeavors, at least 1400 employees are working on that car project, which they're not going to be impacted by this. >> coming up, wind wendy's, they plan to start charging customers using a surge

him next to her body. court documents also say to call 9-1-1 best of the murder. police say she died in the hospital after being strangled at the beach. we know she was a uc santa cruz student and that's told also used to be a student there. stone was denied bail and is expected to return to court march for arraignment. the victim's name has not been released. 3 honduran nationals were extradited to the u.s. accused of fentanyl trafficking. the u.s. attorney's office says the 3 men, a separate federal felony charges for their involvement in conspiracies. so drugs in san francisco's tenderloin district, the u.s. drug enforcement administration sending a pretty clear message to anybody who might be thinking of committing similar crimes. >> these extraditions, she sent a clear message to those who peddle poison is san francisco. if you traffic deadly drugs that harm the safety and health of our community. if you flee from

justice, if you think you can hide, you are wrong. dea will be relentless in our pursuit to hold you accountable. >> the extraditions are part of san francisco joint law enforcement initiative to address drug dealing. our actions today are warning to all bad actors who are seeking to take advantage of the public trust. we will find out about ustedes. we will cut off your funding and we will hold you accountable. >> yeah. that was san francisco city attorney david chiu announcing blocking a non profit from getting city money after he says an investigation revealed that nonprofit different of the city of more than $100,000. the nonprofit is called j and j community resource center and on paper, it says it provides services to youth and low-income families. but chew says its founders were lying about the work they were doing submitting false invoices and in some cases. submitting for reimbursement for things like alcohol cigars and motorcycle

rentals. on the peninsula. the county of san mateo now demanding that att provide documents and testify about its decision to end landline service in the area. cutting off landltne access could affect 9-1-1, and other emergencies services that rely on phones. mueller says too many people in his district live in areas with unreliable cell service or no cell service at all. tnt agreed to send a representative to the board of supervisors next meeting to answer some of those questions. >> so the east bay, the mayor of berkeley, says he is pretty concerned about the city and the east bay as a whole becoming a hospital desert alta. bates summit medical center is scheduled to close by 2030, rovers amanda hari spoke with the mayor moniz attempt to ensure berkeley and the surrounding area has emergency medical care. >> ulta bates is berkeley's only full-service hospital. it also supports people albany and elsa rita. the mayor of

snowfall. there. even with all those crews out there trying to plow those roads, expect closures on highway 50 as well as i-80 look at this, especially come saturday morning could see 3 to 6 inches on some of our mountain tops up in the north bay like mount saint helene, it says something to note right there as well. this is because temperatures will get so cold. snow level drops to 2000, if not 1500 feet in elevation and above 5,000 feet, feet of snowfall just piling up resulting in standstill traffic, be prepared with your emergency kits as well as plenty of food in the case that you do get snowed in up their choose you to stay. now we are looking at radar here. nice and clear across the bay today. not a cloud in the sky for us. this is what we have heading our direction. that low pressure dives on in and drags a dip in the jet stream in along with it. this is going to plunge cool arctic air down our direction. cold showers for the bay. heavy snow for the sierra winter in full force with this one. lots of sun today. no winter just
