very much, michael. >> 10. 0, 4, is the time now to some breaking news. mitch mcconnell has just announced he's stepping down as the senate republican leader this november. >> the 82 year-old from kentucky is the longest-serving senate leader in history, though, there been concerns over his health recently. colleagues say that mcconnell has recovered and that's not the reason why he's decided to step down from his leadership role. he says he does plan to serve out his senate term which ends in january of 20. so 27. he'll just do it from a different seat in the chamber. san francisco residents are grappling with 2 stores closing big ones. the iconic macy's at union square and the other is a walgreens on sacramento and front street kron four's. sara stinson spoke with some neighbors who say they're concerned now especially about seniors in the area and how they'll be able to access pharmacies. >> in the final hours of operation, more than 2 dozen people who live in downtown san francisco gathered outside

the walgreens at 2, 7, 5, sacramento street hoping their voices will be heard. you know, a pharmacy like a grocery store. >> they you know, they're oftentimes the center of the community. they're really important needs. diana taylor has organized efforts to plea with walgreens and the city to stop the closure. but unfortunately, they've had no look what we found out that it wasn't about. >> human needs or what the community needs. it was all about the numbers. a spokesperson for walgreens tells kron 4 the locations closure is due to a significant decrease in foot traffic since the pandemic. but that's not what we saw while walking in the area with alec bash who lives just blocks away. >> i think we've got put your foot traffic in this area and we have more and more every >> fashion taylor are among those worried about seniors not having access to a nearby pharmacyr the new year's walgreens will now be a half mile away on montgomery

street. taylor says this closure will take away their independence. the seniors, they're terrified. they feel like they don't have any choice. give people on walkers. warren wheelchairs, houston, to cage walking along and other longtime residents worry this will only hurt the progress the city is making in the downtown area. well, things closing that's taken away or amenities and i worry that people can start start moving out of the because what we have. >> sarah stinson reporting a spokesperson for walgreens says all pharmacy files are being transferred to the location on montgomery street. the company also says they're offering free and reduced prescription delivery for the next 90 days. the group of neighbors we spoke with say they have not given up hope. they still plan to see if walgreens will reconsider its decision to close. well, now to macy's decision to close its location in san francisco. we brought you this story live here on the kron. 4 morning news. macy's announced that

they're going to be shutting down 150 underperforming stores across the country by the year 2026, 50 of them are actually going to shut down by the end of this year alone. the union square location will be open for the rest of the year, but then it will close again by 2026. the company says that should give them enough time to find a buyer for that property. we spoke with mayor london breed about this fact invited her into our studio here for the kron. 4 news, 3 and she emphasized that macy's decision to leave was not made because of any concerns about crime. >> when i talked to the folks from macy's that was not mentioned in its factors to close because it was about its entire portfolio. it's about the profitability of the changes in retail and how people are shopping, how their online businesses is definitely doing very well. and they had to make some really hard decisions. and and the real estate that this macy's is setting in is extremely valuable. >> well, mayor breed added

that the next step will be to find a use for that space. that's both profitable and will attract people to union square kron. 4 was able to speak to san francisco shoppers outside of the store and some of them were shocked and dismayed by the news. >> i'm really sad about that sad about. union square mean this is the heart of the city and you know, it's one more blow to the locals and the way the world is starting to see is has >> you'll still be able to enjoy the macy's christmas tree lighting in the puppies in the cats that are in their windows during the holidays, at least for this year. what happens after that? that still needs to be decided. all right. let's turn our attention to happier news. fremont san jose and san francisco are apparently the happiest cities in the country, least according to a new wallethub study. it compared more than 180 us large cities and they rank them depending on things like

depression rates and income growth rates and average free time people have during the day turns out fremont ranked number one overall and also number one for emotional and physical well-being. san jose ranked number 3 overall

stream that's going to be giving us our snow in the mountains, in our rain right here in the day. and of course, the cooldown that comes along with all of it. futurecast shows us nice, sunny, dry skies today. cloud cover does increase overnight tonight. and as we move into tomorrow, do expect showers initially to be light in the morning, but picking up into the afternoon. here you go. 09:00am on futurecast. seeing some heavier bands rolling up into sonoma county. we'll take a while for them to get to the rest of us. tomorrow's rainfall anywhere between a quarter to three-quarters of an inch, adding additional showers on into friday and saturday, several inches of rain possible in the coastal ranges. and we see even more of a into next week to so several days of wet weather for us. as for the sierra nevada, it is multiple feet of snowfall on the way for to even 10 feet as you head above 5,000 feet in elevation, fully expecting donner summit on i-80 to see at least 5 feet of snowfall. and that is going to be a problem for those plows to keep roadways clear. we

also do have some snow on the way for some of our bay area mountaintops in particular, in mendocino lake and northern sonoma and napa counties. we do have what is going to be 3 days of heavy snow in the sierra. so if you are heading up that direction, plan on up there all the way to the end of the weekend because you're likely to get snowed in and a lot of spots. and if you want to get back today is the day to stew. so we have a blizzard warning going into effect starting tomorrow through saturday. snow level drops as low as 2000, maybe even 1500 feet expect closures. whiteout conditions just overall dangerous conditions for travel into the sierra starting tomorrow. today's daytime highs, totally one, 80 from what i just talked about. look how nice it is. san jose 68 almost 70 today. hayward at 64 while oakland at 63 looking ahead at tomorrow, temperatures start a trend to 50's which remains the rest of the forecast. by saturday. we're barely even making 50 degrees. that's that cold air plunging in along with this rain and snow. james? alright,

thank you. john. time now is 10, 19 and just into the kron 4 newsroom. santa rosa city schools apparently considering job cuts. >> the school district says that while no definite decision has been made just yet, they do have to consider job cuts in order to balance their budget. they say they have to present a balanced budget to the county by july. 1st. and staff makes up 80% of their budget that they don't think they can avoid making cuts. there. they say governor gavin newsom's proposed budget for the school year was not enough for their district. in a state with a crown for the district. superintendent said, quote, the board will need to consider reducing staff, including positions at both the district and school site levels. preliminary notices

all they can to get out the vote. we have capitol correspondent eytan wallace with more. >> at the for democratic party, it's all hands on deck. republicans are feeling great. one week from primary election leaders from california is democratic and republican parties say they're doing all they can to reach voters. it comes as 20 plus million ballots have already been printed and mailed to all the state's registered voters. we have a lot at stake in this reproductive freedom >> protections for you know, just a lot at stake. yvette martinez is the executive director of the california democratic party. she says heading into the primary and looking ahead to the general election. >> the party is organized across the state. we have an on the ground operation are organizing team is out there in the field. so lucky that this presidential election year we can actually campaign and person reach people in communities, go canvassing,

knocking on doors. she makes clear the california democratic party has not made an official endorsemeno in the race for u.s. senate. but martinez says she's excited about all 3 leading democratic candidates. and as for the balance of power in the u.s. house of representatives, she notes a major focus is on keep toss up seats across the state. we can take back the house if california turn some of these red states blue. so we're very exciting and we're doing everything we can to turn out every boat change things in california. so could be a cult and state jessica millan patterson is the chair of the california republican party. she says volunteers and her party have been out in full force. that includes a partnership with the republican national committee to open with the party describes as community centers across the state, including the antelope valley, bakersfield and little saigon. these aren't the typical campaign headquarters where we launch precinct lots dumping. we do that, really they're engaging in the community, whether it's our headquarters in little saigon, where we have tai chi classes or our at

engagement centers in the latino community. and it seems to have worked according to data from the secretary of state's office between october 2023. in january of this year. >> the california republican party gained more than 45,000 registered voters while the california democratic party last about 30,000 registered voters, even so registered democrats outnumber registered republicans by about 2 to one in this blue state. >> still, patterson believes gop congressional candidates and key toss-up races can win. and while her party has not officially endorsed in the race for u.s. senate, she's optimistic about steve garvey is chances. are you confident a republican can win that seat? i feel really good about it and having a political outsider, it's really been engaged in many communities around our state over the years. this is that part, not just republicans, but for californians. >> and a reminder, once you filled out your ballot, you must then put it back in the official return envelope who then must sign the back of the return envelope and make sure it's postmarked no later the march 5th reporting in tom

wallace kron 4 news. and a reminder as kron 4 is your local election headquarters. don't forget to join us on election day itself tuesday, march 5th. that's next tuesday. we'll have our live election results on our special coverage of the election beginning at 08:00pm right here on kron 4. all right. back to more headlines now in the south bay. a man has been arrested in morgan hill in connection with multiple pharmacy robberies. police say rodolfo duarte was probably the stores in order to get prescription incident happened on december. 30th at rite aid on a monterey highway. they say he walked up to the pharmacy with a gun and demanded medicine. then later that day, a similar robbery happened at a cvs in gilroy. the 3rd robbery happened on february 7th at another cvs on walnut grove drive. that was in morgan hill. they say he again had a gun and demanded medicine from the pharmacist. police say they identified him

as the suspect, an alleged that he is tied to several other robberies in multiple jurisdictions. he's since been booked into the santa clara county jail on suspicion of 3 counts of robbery. in the east bay berkeley mayor jesse are dean says he's concerned about part of the east bay becoming a hospital desert. we're talking about all to bates summit medical center is scheduled to close before 2030. it's the only full-service hospital in the city of berkeley and the mayor there says if it closes, it would leave that stretch of area between richmond and downtown oakland without a full-service hospital and potentially overload the summit hospital in oakland. he says all options to keep all debates up and running are on the table right now. >> the city of berkeley is willing to pass. bonds are taxes were willing to look at permitting. we're willing we're going to do anything as at the end of the day want to control our destiny. and so whether that's bringing another health care provider, whether that's forming a

we rent equipment, things like that. we've already had some people moving around the reservations for the weekend. so that's not going to happen. >> yeah. despite the impact of businesses, though, a lot of people are still looking forward to the benefits of everybody coming up, maybe the weekend after. but as for this coming weekend, the chp caltrans are sort of waving everybody off because it is just going to be really tough. john, in the weather center right now with an eye on that forecast. i think caltrans going a tough time keeping up with the amount of snow falling like it's gonna john. yep. you know, all the plows are going to be out there and it's still going to be a tough time. keeping roadways clear, couldn't be more opposite today. got those skiers right there. enjoying view from diamond peak. >> out over lake tahoe looks nice. so favorable today. is your travel back down day. if you want to get on the roads because starting tomorrow, friday into saturday, you're getting snowed in up there. temperatures starting to fall and only in the 20's by saturday with blowing snow drifting snow. the lizard blizzard warning in the sierra issued by the national weather service donner summit for 8

plus feet of snowfall. and that is going to be just completely stopping traffic in its tracks. up on i-80 as oell as highway 50 above 5,000 feet. it's multiple speed of snow. but you get down to 1500 feet, not with some snow right here in the bay area, especially in our mountain tops up in the north bay, mount saint helene, i could see 3 to 6 inches of it. we do, as i mentioned, have a blizzard warning in effect starting tomorrow through saturday, up in the sierra snow level falling particularly low. once you head to 5,000 feet and above, it's a snowden kind of situations. so either anticipate being stuck at home with plenty of supplies. if you are in the sierra over the next few days or try to get back down to the bay area really today before the storm arrives because today, nice and clear in the sierra as well as for the bay, we don't have much of anything to talk about today except for just how nice and sunny, it's going to be that all changes tomorrow. huge dip in the jet stream anchored by this strong low pressure system that is really pushed right up towards

the gulf of alaska right now, but dives deep into the west coast as we make our way into tomorrow and the weekend with continually dropping temperatures along with it. that means cold showers over the next few days. today. sunshine tonight, a few clouds in tomorrow morning. we will see some light showers here and there rainfall picking up towards the middle of the day. tomorrow. you see those heavier showers arriving late morning for the north bay rainfall. tomorrow, a quarter to three-quarters of an inch will add more on top of that into friday and saturday and even more on top of that as we roll into next week. so the storm door opens kind of stays open. today's highs will be in the 60's close to 70 for a few spots like san jose at 68 sf and oakland, you'll be in the low 60's for your highs. tomorrow starts or trend of 50's and only getting colder into the start of the weekend by saturday will barely make 50 degrees going to see some low elevation snow fall saturday morning. look for dawn mission peak mount diablo mount saint while we will start to clear and dry out a bit next week. still remaining

and settled for much of the week. james. >> thank you, john. 10. 47 the time and check it out. we've got a live look here at the corpse this is the corpse flower in a mirage blooming right now at the california academy of sciences. it's actually called a bloom but it's available online. you can see it here remotely from wherever you are. it started blooming yesterday afternoon. it could relch up to 10 feet tall. you can see the people there on the left-hand side, the flowers taller than they are and they're getting that corpse flower in all its glory because the smell is often described as resembling rotten fish, garlic or decaying meat. it doesn't loom for very long say head out there. if you want experience it in person, and get it in its full glory, huge. all right. the city of san jose is a approving a new license and contract for new management of reaching waters. so it's going to be open again. that's the good news. the agreement allows reaching waters to operate this summer. the park originally opened

back in 1985. but had to close indefinitely last september after ending its lease with the city. but again, the good news is it will be operating this summer for families everywhere. speaking of the south bay in san jose, a vta light rail connection to bark has been 20 years in the making and it just needs one more votes for construction to officially begin this year. officials say that the eastridge to bark regional connector is desperately needed and it would run trains on the east capitol expressway all the way to alum rock and connect to the milpitas bart station advocates say this will connect the lower-income largely latino population in east san jose to jobs and schools. the project design actually started since the early 2, thousands and took a pause during the recession back in 2007, the vta board will vote on a construction contract next month. and if approved construction will begin in april. all right. now let's talk about football forty-niners wide receiver brandon aiyuk is expressing
